- dougbdl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yes...if it involved floating around the ocean in complete near-suicide causing misery. I would never want to trade places with these poor guys even if they signed for $100 million!
I am glad to see that at least they turned that horrible experience into some real money because they truly earned it! - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"exclusive rights to market the story to film companies, book publishers and merchandisers"
WTF? merchandise? - eviscerator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10i find it mind boggling that someone would make a movie about this..
- HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Only after the fact...
If you said, "Here's $3.8M no go drift in the ocean," I'd say no.
If they said, "Since you spent all that time in ocean eating raw fish we'll give you $3.8M," then I would say yes! - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I loved Castaway, and that was about as dull a storyline as this. Mind you, they don't even have an island to explore for this one...
- awm4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9As for me no, but these are Mexicans we are talking about. They are some of the hardest workers around; hell, they'll re roof your house in the middle Texas on a 100 degree day for 50 bucks. Why not float around in the ocean for 9 months for $3.8 mil.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"WTF? merchandise?"
Fish-flavored seagull jerky? "Distressed" wife-beaters? Special edition fishing boat by some brand name boat manufacturer? Special edition rods and reels? Survival kits?
The possibilities are endless. ;)
(and yes...I used to work in marketing) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ newevilmind
STFU. Do us all a favor and don't breed.
Mexico is in the shape it's in currently because they have no public education system that is worth a damn. Hence, many uneducated albeit honest and hard working people. - ActiveMatx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Sounds like a more boring version of lost.... except with three mexicans instead of a cast of hotties, and instead of a mysterious island filled with monsters, strange island women, and a group of "others" we get seagulls and raw fish.
Oh yeah, this is next summers block-buster for sure. - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sometimes movies don't need flash and gimmicks to be good. '12 Angry Men' is a great movie and the whole thing is twelve men in a room.
- BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Life of Pi" is an excellent book but was it made into a movie?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Mind boggling? A human interest piece about people facing certain death and abandonment and overcoming insurmountable odds to survive, that ends happily ever after?
Yeah you're right, no one would ever go see something like that.

- light50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not yet, but soon. I can't wait to see how they treat it --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Life_of_Pi#Film_adaptation
- limewood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4oh i thought they turned out to youtube founders too...
- VernonLloyd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Would you turn down $3.8m for nine months of your life?
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if they'll suddenly lose any regret or trauma from all those nine months once they get their check...
- jabberwock1977, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's pretty much the same story as Life Of Pi, which I thought was amazingly captivating. Whether these film makers can match that remains to be seen.
- theDevilsDue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good for them. Don't know how good of a movie it will make, though.
- colsim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Comedy perhaps?
As an Aussie, I find this story particularly interesting - not sure if you remember the Beaconsfield Miners drama from a few months ago (2 miners trapped underground for a few weeks after a cave in) but at exactly the same time, 3 (I think) Aboriginal guys were drifting around the sea north of Australia for the same period of time after their fishing boat broke down.
Guess which story the media here went ape ***** about and which one they ignored altogether. - cualcrees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Their story is kind of "fishy"... (pun intended) i mean, cmon! did you happen to see them on TV right after they got back? they looked great!! not like someone who has been adrift for 9 months; heck, even their teeth looked pearly white!! lots of people here in Mexico doubt their story....
but who knows; stranger things have happened i suppose... - Ashex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, anyone want to head off in a for and see if we get the same deal?
I was thinking a weather balloon in antartica - archiloco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1[q] I think in about 10 months, we'll be hearing of even more fisherman who got lost.
Think about it. $3.8M split three ways, working 24 hours a day for nine months, works out to about $190/hr wages, subtracting health benefits and self-employment taxes, works out to about $140/hr -- not bad! [q]
yeah specially when these people are used to earning 5 bucks a day let alone 140 bucks an hr. - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A couple of sea monsters, some mermaids, ghost pirates and some zombies, it will sell.
- pjsson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More about the suspicions:

Most of us wouldn't make it back from 9-10 mos lost out on the ocean. I just hope they spend the money wisely.
- vaduzl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, disappear for nine months in ocean , yes , thats a great angle to make some money
- cliodna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's just a lie all that thing about the fishermen... they didn't look thin, they even looked clean when they were rescued.. that's impossible.. and I think the movie will be boring as hell....
- fricken4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wonder How they can work some kind of drug smuggling thing into this. I wanna see some fancy wire work and cool cgi sea Monsters. What about the Love interest? Maybe they can get Katie Holmes to Play a sexy mermaid. That'll jiuce it up
- mtgvault, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I guess it all depends on how much money you have to start with, i wouldn't say no; 9 months in exchange for being sorted for the rest of your life? Easy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yo quero sushi.
- newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3@awm4
get real! what a generalization!! ALL mexicans are hard working??
then why is their country the only 3rd world ***** hole in N. America??
if they were so hard working Mexico would look like Sweden. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Nine months? Nine /months/ drifting without supplies?
Those lucky (Or not so lucky) *****.
