- HouseofEl, on 11/01/2009, -0/+95Anyone who has seen behind the scenes footage of the films knows the reason he feels this way. He unfortunately had horrible reactions to the makeup used on him. Some people are really allergic to this type of makeup. He suffered through the shoot and kept going, but even on the extended DVDs he makes a point to say that he will never put that stuff on again. He was apparently in constant pain because of it. He made a point to burn the make up pieces once filming was wrapped. This isn't about him being ungrateful for the role or hating the experience. He went through enough to give a great performance. He shouldn't be required to go through that personal hell again.
- enronhubbard, on 11/01/2009, -2/+77Do we really need to call Gimli "Lord of the Rings' dwarf warrior" on digg?
- Grandpohbah, on 11/01/2009, -1/+41Samuel Jackson

- rocknog, on 11/01/2009, -1/+17Hey, you leave Sliders out of this!
- MWeather, on 11/01/2009, -0/+15 He didn't ruin anything. He hasn't been in any movies that had any chance of being any good.
- sdipaola, on 11/01/2009, -0/+13please no

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IXCK1EyP4s - heynow21, on 11/01/2009, -0/+12It's too late sir, sorry won't cut it. With each "He" I died a little inside and I can't bring back the man I used to be.
- Mujokan, on 11/01/2009, -0/+11Lol, maybe they could put him in the Battle of Five Armies as a young dwarf. He was alive at the time. Though in all probability he was living in the Blue Mountains and would not have been involved.
The main ones they have to worry about are the White Council, namely Galadriel, Saruman, Celeborn, Elrond, if they put in the Dol Guldur scene. Particularly they want Gandalf and Saruman there. But in the end it's a movie, and it's stupid to worry about which actor plays which part. - asgardshill, on 11/01/2009, -0/+10Actors accepting dirty MONEY? What's the world coming to? Why can't they just work for free like anonymous guys on the Internet tell them to?
- Ryuuken117, on 11/01/2009, -0/+10Guillermo del Toro + J.R.R. Tolkien = Awesome. With "A Game of Thrones" in 2010 and the Hobbit movies in 2011-2012, the next few years are going to be great for the fantasy genre.
- Bilbobaggins, on 11/01/2009, -0/+10Get one of the gents from the Today Show Ewok debacle to play the part.
- HouseofEl, on 11/01/2009, -0/+9Apparently I enjoy starting my sentences with the word "He" a lot. Sorry for the telegraph style post.
- Kronos6948, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7Remember that they're extending the story...trying to bridge the Hobbit and LOTR.
- Vranak, on 11/01/2009, -7/+14For this to have even been a possibility tells me they aren't being terribly faithful to the source material.
- Syric, on 11/01/2009, -0/+7The only ones who really need to come back for the Hobbit movie are Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and Hugo Weaving. Maybe a couple of other elves too; I forget.
Although I don't really know what's going to be in the second movie. So maybe there will be roles for other folks too. - Akairenn, on 11/01/2009, -0/+6You can't tell me you're shocked that Rhys-Davies turned down a comedy relief bit part?
Ah, Gimli, Gimli! At least you weren't assassinated on the level of Faramir!
A thousand deaths are not enough for that pot-smoking Kiwi bastard named Jackson! - Angostura, on 11/01/2009, -0/+6If you read the article he was asked whether he would be interested in playing a *different* dwarf.
In terms of additional material, I think they are plundering LoTR appendices. - Syric, on 11/01/2009, -0/+6He's way too old now.
- fms45, on 11/01/2009, -1/+7Rumors are flying around the web of the impending announcement that Bilbo Baggins is to be played by James McAvoy.
- Mujokan, on 11/01/2009, -0/+5Martin Freeman came to mind for me, and I think a lot of other people had the same idea. He is about the right age.
- HouseofEl, on 11/01/2009, -0/+5Not unfaithful, just adding material to flesh out two films. They plan on showing more than just the hobbit story from what I've heard. I believe the first film will be primarily The Hobbit, while the second film will include some bridging material to connect it to LOTR. I heard they wanted to include information from the Similarion but unfortunately they do not have the film rights.
- FearlessFreep, on 11/01/2009, -0/+5John-Rhys Davies has always been an actor who will take roles in good stuff as well as cheap sci-fi/fantasy stuff.
- TobiasParker, on 11/01/2009, -2/+7I knew i friended you for a reason beyond our similar political beliefs, sliders owned.
- lolwatermelon, on 11/01/2009, -0/+5He accepted a role in "In The Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale."
- Rockyn, on 11/01/2009, -0/+5I could totally play Bilbo if I was not 5'11 and had any short term memory at all. I have hair on my feet and everything.
- LordVance, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4He was making a funny dude >.>
/funny haha laugh times? - Rockyn, on 11/01/2009, -1/+5I'm dying over here. Bravo to you all.
- KyotoWolf, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4Hopefully they include CĂrdan, the awesomeness of an elf with a beard is unfathomable.
- inactive, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4He's in everything!
- KyotoWolf, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4it's a shame, most of the original cast are too old now.
- frepnog, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4i just hope that Leonard Nimoy does the theme song.
amirite??? - Slackdragon, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3I know where you're going with that, I'll play.
Don't sell Gimli short. - Mujokan, on 11/01/2009, -2/+5I lived in Melbourne so I have affection for David Wenham. But the little bit of the movies I've been able to force myself to watch also made me think Faramir was a travesty.
Just to start (engage nerd rage) HE HAD BLACK HAIR!!! If you don't know that, you didn't read one of the most beautiful and tear-inducing scenes of the whole book with him and Eowyn in "The Steward And The King". I could go on but I'd give myself high blood pressure. Faramir is the purest expression of the Numenor bloodline in Gondor. He is an absolutely key character, and should have been rendered as faithfully as possible.
Fran Walsh didn't understand the first thing about Tolkien. It's her that deserves the calumny. - yosafbridge, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3Okay...there are those people, like me, who love Tolkeins novels and want to see good adaptations of them to the screen. The type who, despite our respect for the books, understand that a film is a different medium and must be handled a different way.
We're the type who want the director to cast the person who would portray the characters in a faithful way (often the type of actors who will add to the characters to make them more 3-dimensional onscreen), to cut superfluous scenes that wouldn't translate well from the books, and add whatever they feel would make the movie-going experience more enjoyable for the audience (both the book devotees and newbies alike)
Then there are the freaks. The people who think that everything Tolkien wrote is gospel. That "OMG THEY RUINED HIM" because a certain actor was cast who had the wrong hair colour, eye colour or is slightly older or younger than the book character ("OMG! Bilbo was 50 in the books! Never Mind that Frodo was too and he was portrayed by an 18 year old, or the fact that hobbits age slower than humans (reaching adulthood at 33)...the actor who plays Bilbo has to be in his 50s or the MOVIE IS RUINED!")
Oh, and GOD FORBID the filmmakers cut a SINGLE LINE OR CHANGE ONE DETAIL OF TOLKIENS MASTERPIECE! Clearly if Gandalf's eyebrows don't extend beyond the rim of his hat, or if Bilbo serves a different brand of tea than in the books, that means that the movie is trash and Del Toro and Jackson deserve to burn in a very special level of hell reserved for those who piss off fans who have too much time on their hands. - jbmcb, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3All they need is Gandalf and Gollum, I don't there there were any other characters from The Lord of the Rings in the Hobbit. Bilbo was there, but he's much younger, so you don't need the same actor. Crap, it had better not be the same actor. I mean, I like Ian Holm as much as the next guy, but c'mon...
Aside from that, if he tries to pull a retcon of Lucasian proportions and drag characters into the story who don't belong there, Peter Jackson needs to be beaten with a shovel until he stops. - Avaseal, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3as if the last 8 werent?
- GorfTron, on 11/01/2009, -2/+5Patrick Stewart?
- lolwatermelon, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2The issue isn't that he did it for money, it's that he did it knowing he was only getting the role so they could say they have one of the "stars" of LotR in the movie.
- KeseChartier, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2I hope it means George R. Martin will finish the damn story in my lifetime.
- Nilatir, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Bilbo is not, in fact, any younger in The Hobbit than in the beginning of Fellowship.
- jbmcb, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2The ring slows down aging, it doesn't stop it. Bilbo is around 50 during the hobbit, and 111 during the LOTR, he'd probably show some signs of aging.
Ian Holm could probably get away with playing Bilbo again, but they should really get a younger actor. Not *too* much younger, but he's going to be spelunking and battling dragons, a bit much for a 78 year old guy. - Mujokan, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2Last I heard they were just going to do the Hobbit over two movies, and not do that one.
Cirdan gave his ring to Gandalf, so he can bring the nukes! -
