- hoppdawg, on 10/12/2007, -10/+67Thank god Casino Royale ditched a stupid, over-the-top plot (racing through the DMZ on a hovercraft, ice surfing, etc.), corny lines, and Pierce Brosnan.
Looking forward to the sequel. - juanbobo808, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42Just watched Casino Royale last night, and I've got to say, Daniel Craig does an amazing Bond.
Kudos to them for keeping on a track that the fans seem to like, it'll be interesting to see what comes of it come November 2008. - cinnix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I didn't think Daniel Craig was going to be that good a Bond at first, but I must say, he did a great job on acting the role.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20read again, its James Bond 22, as in Twenty-Two
as in, there where 21 other films before.
Bond is one of the few proofs that sometimes a sequel can be better than the original(or in this case, many sequels can be better than the original, or at least equivelant, rarely worse than)
I would never want to see Jaws 22, in fact i like to ignore that there was ever even a jaws 2, but movies like Star Trek, and James Bond deserve their sequels, provided that they maintain the standards they have maintained thus far, and improve them over time - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I think it was very wise of them to restart the series with the new actor, It allowed them to drop a lot of the baggage that had accumulated over the years.
I really hope they stick with this bond for quite a while
But then, sadly, when he is put out to pasture, get a new actor and restart the series in a similar manner and give him his own continuous story. Basicly making each of the individual bond actors stand alone bond story arcs and continuity and whatnot. When a bond leaves, so does the rest of the cast and any previous truths. - mrthebunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18"Production designer Peter Lamont, who has worked on nearly every Bond film in some capacity, briefly discussed Bond 22 at a tribute to Pinewood Studios in France last week"
Note: tribute TO Pinewood Studios (and not AT Pinewood Studios)
My guess is that the tribute itself (a tribute to Pinewood Studios) was occurring in France. Pinewood Studios are indeed located in England, but they are very well known, so I would be surprised to see such a big factual error in an article.
But again I could be wrong ;-)
PS: Huge Bond fan and Daniel Craig really surprised me, he was excellent, and added a lot of humanity to the character. Can't wait for the sequel! :-) - atticus8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17It's funny to see all this Daniel Craig love, despite how deserved by him it is, seeing as how everyone completely ***** on him before the movie came out.
- stupidverizon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Daniel Craig has to be my favorite Bond. Finally, someone who's less about gadgets, tech, and cars, and more about real character, real fighting and real emotion.
I hope they don't bring in a ton of lame gadgets in the next movie, and keep it real. - jmz635, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Pinewood Studios is in England...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinewood_Studios - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Casino Royal is the best movie of a Bond yet. It's actually a good movie, Bond aside. Because of that I'll go see the sequel, they are at the brink of a fantastic opportunity to revive a franchise. Now for another great video game.
- deuceswilde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It's interesting the way they restarted the storyline (becoming 007) but kept the historical chronology (post Cold-War) with Casino Royale, it almost seems like they're trying to start the series anew which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. The real question for me is if this signals a whole different approach with a continuous storyline or if they they keep the essentially episodic and standalone nature of the series up until now.
Although the way they adapted Casino Royale makes me slightly curious how they would deal with some of the other novels but I don't think that would be a good long-run strategy. - pin0chet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Previously, Bond movies have each included an individual story arc. While some enemies remained for multiple pictures (i.e. Ernst Stavro Blofeld), we have not yet seen a "sequel" per se, to any Bond movie. It will be interesting to see if the writers can maintain the distinct 007 feel while relying on key plot elements that were introduced in a previous Bond movie. To some, that each Bond film stands on its own plotwise is one of the main reasons the series has lasted for over 40 years with more than 20 motion pictures. Casino Royale did seem to take the series in a new creative direction, and it remains to be seen whether the James Bond franchise can continue onwards without a major drought as occurred for 6 years between 1989 and 1995, when Timothy Dalton's Bond once looked to be the last.

- harmonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10We can all thank the Borne movies for saving the Bond movies.
I’m a huge Bond fan. Have been for all my 32 years. In fact, by friends and I watched the first 19 movies in one month in preparation for Die Another Day. They really are a touch stone for the way the world looks at popular culture. For instance, in the 60s and 70s James would sleep with a dozen women but only kill a few people. In the 80s and 90s he’d only sleep with one or two women but kill dozens.
Anyway, for the last 20 years the Bond movies had become parodies of themselves which is what made Austin Powers work so well.
When I saw the Borne movies I thought to myself “I hope the Bond producers are watching. Here is a spy that is brutal and accessible.” It looks like they paid attention. - sharper130, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9shame the main sound studio burned down, although they are building it again, here's aerial imagery of the place before it burnt to a crisp
http://www.intrepidearth.com/tour/random/030807.php?loc=030807
also to add, i thought Daniel Craig made a great Bond. - AlfaWolph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Seems I'm one of the few who liked them both. I mean when Brosnan first took over the character in GoldenEye he was the right guy for the right time- as was the whole feel with the amount of gadgets special effects and over-the-top bravado. But, it definitely got old by the end of the run and I'm more than happy to see Daniel Craig as the new Bond that focuses more on the character. They are apples and oranges really and I think they both stand on their own. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one to see how far Craig can carry this new approach, which is actually the closest to the original Fleming concept of the Bond character so far.
- Daniel001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think he was being sarcastic. Bond sequels work because it was written as a series from the outset and was never intended to be one standalone story.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I for one am ready for SPECTRE to come back, of course with a more gritty terrorism plot(aside from holding the world ransom for hundreds of billions of dollars with some generic stolen superweapon)...
- Chode2235, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The only thing that really bothered me with Casino Royale is that there was no 'Q' or cool gadget scene. Granted I didn't miss it until reflecting later, but that's like a star wars movie without a lightsaber battle.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Fool, the war on terror in itself doesn't make sense, let us have our fun
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7As long as they dont try and re-use this texas holdem ***** thats been sweeping everywhere for the last 5 years or so Im interested to see where they go with things
- Vash63, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sweet, Casino Royale was the best Bond movie since Connery IMO.
- ITinNYC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Strangely I also watched Royale last night and I have to say that Bond being cold blooded and ruthless are how I like my "agents"
Dalton I thought with Living Daylights was as close as you being ruthless. Brosnan was great for Goldeneye. Never really warmed up to Moore.
I hope they answer a lot of the questions in the sequel. - CedEx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It was a bad joke, meaning you tried to say something funny, but failed miserably.
- Scopitone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've been a massive Bond fan damn near my entire life and if there is one thing I've learned is that most people love Bond, but have barely seen any of the films. Redoing some of the old classics wouldn't be too terrible as the majority of people out there haven't even seen the them. This would still piss of a small minority of hilariously vocal purists but I'm all for it if the same team behind Royale is still running the show.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Casino Royale was like a more realistic James Bond. I really enjoyed it compared to the previous newly made Bonds. I always thought Bond films (the 90's ones) had a boring part that was slow moving but Casino Royale kept my attention throughout the film. Also it will be great to see how Bond seeks revenge in the first true Jame Bond sequel. I hope they keep making Bond films this fast!
- zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4:D
Casino Royale was awesome. Let's hope the next one is just as good. - wahooguy14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Taking Brosnan out was wise. He was much to old and the series was getting to be over the top.
- cielo23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I saw the preview for the movie early last year, and I knew right then it was going to be a whole new world of awesome.....and it was.
- Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Before they go and make more movies, first I want to know who's to blame for The World is Not Enough (other than Denise Richards)
- overbored454, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@dscx
I agree. I used to read the novels (up until a few years ago) and, before now, I thought that Dalton played Bond as he should have been. In Licence to Kill he was restricted by a horribly written screenplay, but Dalton did Bond better than any of them. Until now. I might have to give Craig the edge on this one. The others made Bond seem like he had a soul. Dalton and Craig showed Bond as he should have been. - jpop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My recollection is that people were worried that he was going to be a pretty boy metrosexualizing Bond. I'd say that that worry has been shattered.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't see how they were trying to make him appear as a stud. He was an orphan that had to prove himself to the world by going beyond what others expected from him. In a way he is an anti-Bond that doesn't listen to what his superiors say, even more then the other James Bonds.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I watched Casino Royale this weekend for the first time myself. CR was MUCH more of a true spy movie than any 'modern' Bond has been. I enjoyed it thoroughly, though my wife preferres the Pierce Brosnan Bond.
- paidhima, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Mohanned
Keeping Judi Dench is a good thing. She was one of the best things about the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies and she was fantastic in this movie. Continuity has never been the hallmark of James Bond. She brings formidable acting prowess and a humanity that the other "peripheral" Bond characters generally lack. I really dig the way she almost takes on a surrogate-mother role with Bond. - ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The classic bond films were built around the era they were filmed in and couldn't be successfully reproduced. Showing a helpless bond girl from the sixties kidnapped by an ubervillain won't fly today when everyone expects the girl to be a psudo-action hero and the villain to at least have rational aspirations for controlling the world.
- strictlybogart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the whole "aside from holding the world ransom for hundreds of billions of dollars with some generic stolen superweapon).." had to start somewhere.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5rerelease in theatres, yes, redo... ***** NO!
you screw with a classic you will piss off more than just the hardcore fanatics, even casual fans get pissed off at that.
luckily hollywood seems to have stopped doing remakes, or at least slowed down, i don't mind if thay make a new movie based on the same IP(ie. Superman Returns wasn't a remake, but its hard to classify it as a true sequel, though its more true than superman 3 & 4), but flat out remaking a movie can only lead to disaster because no matter how well you remade it, you will always have people cursing your very existence
oh, and Dalton was the biggest POS Bond in the series, Brosnan wasn't much better, but he at least had one good movie - wewa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree. The older bond films were more nostalgic. The last decade of bond films are really not much different from everything else thrown out there, Mission Impossible, Charlie's Angels, etc. All overblown video game fantasy movies...
For example, I liked Moore in Man with Golden Gun. Maybe the script was more interesting than the actor portraying 007, but in any event, it wasn't all violence. It had humor. Even my wife can enjoy such an action movie, whereas she cannot watch many of the violent crap that is put out today. But hey, we're in our 40's, we're tired of all the 'real world' violence, and want to experience a positive outlook on life.
Much of these comments preferring the new bond films are probably coming from the 20 and under male crowd, so to each his own. - goodcompany, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4As much as I liked Craig in the role, it would be a little premature to make a claim like that. I think he could arguably be placed 3rd at the moment behind Connery and Moore. If Craig is still cranking them out in 10 years and the films are good, then maybe he could be considered "best evar". But after one film? Connery made 6, Moore 7. Let's see what happens, I am definitely looking forward!
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -2/+3They kept Judi Dench as M this time though. I'm not sure if that was a good or a bad idea. I think maybe it was bad because it may have confused the average viewer about Casino Royale being about bond becoming a 007. Did I confuse you with that sentence?
- Majupra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Remember how James Bond could instantly charm with some eloquent words? He could just melt the panties right off of a woman, and was always adept at talking a good game. Craig lacked that vocal flair."
Of course this being a young, brash, arrogant Bond who hasn't quite slipped into his "element" within the role of 007 yet had nothing to do with this, at all...
Oh wait, apparently i just forgot all the scenes with him and Vesper on the train or with the married woman at the Ocean Club. (Driving the car around the round-about and pulling back up to the ocean club with a smug "We're here." was classic bond)
Just because he wasn't feeding every woman that walked by a one-liner which lead directly to them dropping to their knees for him like the original Bond movies (which was horribly unrealistic, and let's face it, sexist at best), doesn't mean he can't smooth talk his way into a pair of panties anymore. - agallagher00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@lpcustom
Setting and time of the film definitely have an effect on the movie, even though we've only seen 6 Bonds on scree n and only 1-2 actors in people's opinions failed. i.e. Pierce Brosnan stylizing his own Bond in Goldeneye, to Pierce Brosnon in a scene in Die Another Day where he is driving away in a rocket car from a laser in the sky and then popping the parachute, grabbing the detachable roof of the car and the parachute, then surfing a tidal wave caused by a glacier falling and using the car roof as a surfboard and the parachute as a directional device. Yeah...also, Daniel Craig FTW, like someone in this thread said before, it's such a good movie enough to break the barrier of saying, "That was an awesome Bond movie," to saying "That was an awesome MOVIE." - overbored454, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By the time the Bond series reached the early 80s, they were so full of lame puns that they were no longer funny. Roger Moore made James Bond seem more like Benny Hill than a double-O. He was either bedding every thing with legs or making jokes that simply were not funny. Also the gadgetry reached an over-the-topness that should be reserved for Wile E. Coyote. The oversexed Bond toned down a bit with Dalton and Brosnan and the women started to grow brains (from Brosnan forward, Denise Richards notwithstanding), but the gadgets kept getting worse. Casino Royale seemed to follow more the pattern set in the Jason Bourne movies, that is: Believable.
- lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm not sure it's the person playing Bond so much as the settings and time of the film. The 60's - 70's bond flicks just have an exotic feel to them. I just don't like the look of modern movies for some reason. I can't decide what it is. Maybe it's that every "live action" flick seems more like a cartoon from all the CG work. CG has it's place but every movie uses it these days. I'm sure there's a film expert here that can tell me what it is about the modern film that I hate. I'm probably just getting old, but I prefer the "not-so-perfect" quality of the films in the older eras.
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Casino Royale = #1 movie of 2006!
Too bad it'll never come out on HD-DVD. I'd actually go buy an HD-DVD player just to see it! - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2..haha, right. I'm the most mild film critic around. As long as it's entertaining, i'll like it. I don't go to the movies to analyze and critique. I loved the remake of War of the Worlds.
