One controversial aspect of Hubbard's early life revolves around his association with Jack Parsons, an aeronautics professor at Caltech and an associate of the British occultist Aleister Crowley. Hubbard and Parsons were allegedly engaged in the practice of ritual magick in 1946, including an extended set of sex magick rituals called the Babalon Working, intended to summon a goddess or "moonchild." (Among occultists today, it is widely accepted that Hubbard derived a large part of 'Dianetics' from Golden Dawn occult ideas such as the Holy Guardian Angel.) The Church insists Hubbard was a US government intelligence agent on a mission to end Parsons' magickal activities and to "rescue" a girl Parsons was "using" for magickal purposes. Critics dismiss these claims as after-the-fact rationalizations. Crowley recorded in his notes that he considered Hubbard a "stupid lout" who made off with Parsons' money and girlfriend in an "ordinary confidence trick". Discussions of these events can be found in the critical biographies.[37][38][39]

- gettothechoppa, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3It doesn't surprise me now how religious war could continue unabated for years in the middle east, when you have people even in the supposedly tolerant U.S. that can blatantly disrespect the religious beliefs of others.
In any case, whatever ones' beliefs or religion, it would seem logical that the best way to find out what it's actually all about is from the founder of such a movement. - br549, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Scientology has nothing to do with religion.
- janpalmer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5How would you like to define religion then? Appears you need to watch the DVD, my friend -- that way we know we're talking about the same thing. :)
- SgtAl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7When you consider the fact that L.Ron Hubbard himself said that scientology wasnt a religion I would have to agree with you.
- treetops18, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4um, if you'd watch the video you could hear him say it is a religion and explain why....
- bookishboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"...Appears you need to watch the DVD, my friend -- that way we know we're talking about the same thing. :)"
Wow, and at only $18.00 per DVD, how can I afford *NOT* to watch it?
Why is it that most world religions will give away copies of their teachings to anyone who is interested, whereas "cults" enforce a pay-for-enlightenment scheme?
Also, why would a "religion" like scientology feel the need to take over and maintain the "cult awareness network", except to discredit the idea that they are a cult, and to direct people back to other scientology-friendly websites for answers and guidance (and payment options, all major credit cards accepted)? - treetops18, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3You're defending CAN and wishing they were still in existence? Wow....
CAN's highest ranking deprogrammer, Rick Ross was a convicted felon. CAN got slapped with a $4.875-million verdict in the case of Jason Scott (a Pentecostal Christian.) Jason Scott was brutalized, handcuffed, silenced with duct tape across his mouth, abducted and forcibly held against his will for days in a failed attempt to change his beliefs. The jury in the Scott case found that the conduct of some of the defendants was “so outrageous in character and so extreme in degree as to go beyond all possible bounds of decency ... atrocious and utterly intolerable in a civilized community.”
The New Cult Awareness Network began operating in October 1996, after the former Cult Awareness Network declared bankruptcy when they couldn't pay the $1,000,000 fine in the Jason Scott case.
It was acquired by a Scientologist and today the Chairman of the Board is a Baptist minister named George Robertson. The Secretary of the Corporation was originally Mark Lurie a member of the Movement for Spiritual Inner Awareness. It is now Stan Koehler a Buddhist. The Treasurer of the Corporation is Nancy O.Meara, a Scientologist. Other Board members include a woman with a degree in psychology and man who is Jewish.
If you still prefer the old CAN, I suppose you could hang out with Cynthia Kisser--she's a real peach. She was their last Executive Director and is quoted as saying in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, "“If [Jesus Christ] were alive now, we’d take an interest in him because of the great controversy surrounding his fringe activities. ... We’d try to see if there was abuse, unethical behavior or deceptive practices. And I’d send whatever we could find to reporters.” - bookishboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hi there treetops,
As of this date, I see that you only just joined digg in enough time to comment on a Scientology story..... oh wait, you've "dugg" 4 stories total, 3 of which have to do with scientology directly or indirectly (psychology as a death-cult?).
You wouldn't happen to be a scie...... no, you couldn't be.
- marsieve, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I've seen this video and it's awesome--anyone who wants to know what Scientology is directly from the source should check it out.
- rsweetland, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3There is so much crap floating around about what Scientology is...99% of which is just blatantly false. I've also seen this video. I liked hearing an explanation of what Scientology is from the founder as opposed to all these other websites that talk about Scientology who are "experts" on the subject.
- SgtAl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9What part is false? The Xenu story, Project Snow White, the Dead Agent policy for the press, the policy that allows anyone declared a Suppressive Person to be lied, cheated, and destroyed with out concern? Or do you mean the part where scientology only became a religion to gain tax exempt status, or the death of Lisa McPherson, or possibly the the part where scientologist are force to "disconnect" from family member who leave the group. Or may you mean the part about scientology being a mind control cult and a organized crime syndicate that has bilked thousands of people out of money?
Sorry to tell you but that is all true and documented.
- SgtAl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9What part is false? - treetops18, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Yes, that all that above is indeed crap. It's "documented and true" in websites that "know all about the truth of Scientology" and is 100% not what Scientology is. I've been a Scientologist for 15 years and examined it thoroughly, from the inside out and done nearly every course you can think of. I've read and done the courses that are Scientology, not read or written websites that tell "what Scientology is all about." The things you note above are not what L Ron Hubbard ever wrote or did.
Regarding tax exempt status, Scientology meets every definition of a religion set forth by religious scholars. The IRS did an extensive audit and investigation into this matter in the early 90s and their response was that it was undeniably a religion, which is when they granted tax exempt status. Before that, every Scientologist knew it was a religion--tax status or not--because it addresses you as a spiritual being and improves ability, IQ and reaction time by helping man as a spirit, not as a body.
If you want the truth, find out for yourself by actually reading or watching something by L Ron Hubbard, not third party websites that claim they "know" about it.- bookishboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm sure that Scientology meets the standards for tax-exempt status. I'm also sure that's by design, because tax-exempt = more profitable.
- treetops18, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2If don't like the fact that religions get tax free status, and therefore more profits, this would be an issue to take up with the IRS--because the tax laws apply to all religions and Scientology is treated no different than any other religion. If the problem is with Churches having money, other churches such as the Catholic Church have much more money than Scientology.
Christian religions generally request of their parishioners a tithe--a straight % of their income to go directly to the Church--many requesting pre-tax income. If someone cannot afford this, they are still of course welcome to Sunday services, but in general this is expected of a parishioner attending Sunday services. In Scientology, all Sunday services are free and there is no tithe system. The only donations made are for religious counseling or courses. I've always thought this to be a very fair system, because I'm paying for something and getting back something in exchange. All the courses and counseling I've done in Scientology over the years have made me a much happier person and I felt that the money donated to the Church was very small compared to the value of exchange I got back spiritually.
I also have kept close watch of what the Church does with the donations received. Money is poured back into the community for social betterment activities such as the secular non-profit organizations under Able International http://www.able.org/
This organization works on criminal reform (Criminon), drug rehabilitation (Narconon, as well as the current drug education program underway with informational packets on drugs going out to schoolchildren), educational programs (Applied Scholastics), and the Way to Happiness Foundation. Countries around the world have adopted and use these social betterment programs. When the countries need assistance with funding for books, etc, Scientologists donate to assist them--I know--I've directly donated to these programs.
So in sum, I've always been very happy with the donations I've paid the Church because, one, I've always received a huge personal benefit from the courses and counseling and two, because I've watched where my donations go and I'm very happy with the good-will programs that the church is engaged in.
- SgtAl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9#1 How can you be a religion when there is no theocracy involved in scientology? All religion springs from false memories implanted on the thetans, according to Hubbard.
#2 Criminon, Narconon, Applied Scholastics, all just scientology fronts to attempt to recruit new members and insert scientology beliefs into mainstream society. Anything that uses the E-meter or Learning Accelerator as it is called in Delphian schools is pseudo science and of no value and no amount of scientology auditing, assists, or chugging gallons of cal-mag and sweating will cure and addict.
#3 How many churches need a secret police force to keep tabs on members and detractors? How many churches have re-education camps (concentration camps) for people who question the faith or think about leaving?
#4 Jason Scott has reconciled with his mother and long since settled with Rick Ross for $5000 (this is a matter of public record). The scientologist obtained CAN by suing CAN until they could no longer continue with the legal battle. The law suit as used by scientology is not used to win anything but to continue until the opponent is financially ruined. Rule #1 in scientology when dealing with a critic, never defend always attack.
Also this isn’t just information I found on some websites, try thinking for yourself someday and you'll see the truth. - Dannychico, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1To anyone who calls scientologists crazy, I just want to ask what YOUR crazy ass religious beliefs are. There's not much that separates the Church of Scientology from the Church of Baby Jesus except length of existence. It's all nonsense, and you should examine your own delusions before criticizing others for theirs.
- chaosium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"What ARE YOUR CRIMES", the rallying cry of the deluded Scientologist. You really don't know any better than what your immediate uppers tell you, and for all your demands that we keep an open mind, your obedience to your God, your Jesus L Ron Hubbard is all-encompassing.
He was a broken drug-addled man who struggled with sanity and lost the fight decades before his death.

- SgtAl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4That's easy, I have no "crazy ass religious beliefs". I believe in what can be proved by double blind testing and clinical trials. Also I wouldn't say that all scienologist are crazy, delusional maybe or just victims of a scam that over time has reinforced to the point that the victim has actually accepted this muck for fact. Irrational beliefs make for irrational people.
