- DWatch, on 06/04/2009, -2/+29Bruce Lee was far more of a martial artist than Caradine ever was. Caradine had zero martial arts training when he took the role in 'Kung Fu', and even though he eventually started to learn kung fu later on in his life, he never really became much of a martial artists. Just learned enough to get by on film, basically.
At least Bruce Lee had years of rooftop (their version of the "Fight Club") and real street fighting in Hong Kong, plus years of training, and not to mention having Yip Man as a Wing Chung instructor, all prior to even moving to the US to pursue an acting career. In fact, Bruce was genuinely good at pretty much everything he did, because he put everything he had into it, whether it was body building, philosophy, fighting, and even ballroom dancing (he was a champion in Hong Kong).
According to his wife, among the many challenges that Bruce Lee accepted, one was from a very well respected and widely known American karate master.... and Bruce beat him soundly. In fact, Bruce was upset that it took him over three minutes to beat him, as he usually had very little trouble taking on these challenges. At that point, he doubled his training regime. This from his wife in a recent History Channel biography about him. At this point, she has no reason to lie to bolster Bruce's mystique. Plus, the master in question (I can't recall his name) is still alive today and doesn't contradict the events.
Bruce was also a great boxer, having participated in a 1959 Hong Kong boxing championship between 12 martial arts schools. He won by beating a 3 time champion, and that was his first attempt at professional boxing.
Sorry to say, Caradine was a good actor, and made his martial arts 'look' sort of real on screen, but that's as far as it went. Bruce was the real deal. - seanstuart, on 06/04/2009, -0/+26(Respectfully) He finally grabbed the pebble.
