Kiss of Death: 'Ghost Rider' to be held from critics
blogs.nypost.com — Sony is dodging opening-day print reviews for "Ghost Rider,'' which opens a week from Friday. Critics are being invited to a "courtesy'' screening on Friday, which means reviews will be buried in the Saturday papers. The latest Marvel blockbuster starring Nicolas Cage, may well be the most expensive event movie movie to receive this treatment.

Kiss of Death: movie held from critics.
What makes you think that this movie would get good reviews?
The kiss of death is the people at top saying "uuhhhh, how can we make money, uhhhhh, cgi, and uhhhhhh nikolas cage and uhhhhh. boobies"

Duh, really now, use that brain in your skull! even if you skull is ablaze... - macmcrae, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9It looks just like every other $120 million Hollywood piece of crap ever produced. Hollywood stopped being about making good movies in the 70s. It is now all about investment banking.
- gxcdesign, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10Since when do you guys really go by what Critics say anyway?
Lord of War, The Weatherman, National Treasure, Matchstick Men, Con Air...all great Nick Cage movies
Lemme see what movies were "horrific or bad/boring" according to Critics that I enjoyed heavily
Batman Begins
Clerks 2
Rambo 1-3
The Breakup...etc
Critics want nothing but "Best Picture" quality movies, even though are a true waste of film (albeit digital these days) so I probably won't even see the movie in theaters but I have yet to see a 'horrible' Nick Cage movie. - KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12"The dude's name is Johnny Blaze? Just when I thought it couldn't be any lamer."
Yeah, well, considering the name was made up in 1973!! Geez, open your damn minds a bit. 30 years ago, Blaze sounded 'hip.' Especially to someone who was more an artist, than a writer. While we're at it, let's criticize everyone's flaws, and ignore their strengths that allow them to create a story that after 30 years, has enough attention and recognition to become a movie.
So what have you ever done? - LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ pixelbasis: Exactly.

Correction: There HAS been a good movie that was held from the critics. It was called "War of the Worlds."
(but that was the exception to the rule -- it was held from critics presumably just to increase the wow factor/mysteriousness factor on opening day. the studio knew it was going to be a hit either way) - ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"no good movies comes out in jan / feb"

HOW'D IT GET BURNED? HOW'D IT GET BURNED? HOW'D IT GET BURNED? - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I never had high hopes for this movie, I've always thought wow this looks insanely cheesey. But sometimes I just get the hankering for a block of cheese. Not every movie has to be the next deep thought provoking, well acted, dramatic piece of art. Sometimes I like flames, boobies, skulls, violence, and motorcycles, nothing wrong with that.
It wouldn't be screened for critics because critics aren't satisfied with a time waster movie. Even a good one. - Nevrast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@gxcdesign

As for Ghost Rider never really cared for it as a comic, but it will turn out like the rest of the marvel comic to film tripe - Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Amen, Nicolas Cage sucks.
- clink0914, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Why would they get a white guy to play Method Man?
- thecatisdead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Have you seen Lord of War? That was a great movie.
Incidentally, it is the only Nicholas Cage movie I remember liking. - Levich, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I'm sure Marvel fans will hate me - but is the Ghost Rider concept any worse than the concept coming in the Fantastic Four 2? A guy covered in chrome who flies through space on a surf board... (Silver Surfer may be popular - but come on - the concept is lame)
- LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Nicolas Cage is certainly terrible, and I agree with the above -- but even I have to admit he was GREAT in "Adaptation."
- JazzFlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think Nicolas Cage should be promoting this movie with a clip from his other film, The Wicker Man:

I'm actually tempted to see "The Wicker Man" now, just in hopes of understanding the preposterous series of events that could have possibly led to such a line being spoken. Er, screamed.
Wait...wait...The temptation passed. - RaistlinMajere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please don't see the Wickerman. Usually I think Nick Cage is OK, but the Wickerman was a horrible, meandering wreck of a film. The best thing about it is that it made me drowsy.

What about Hot Fuzz, Grindhouse, Hannibal Rising (Which I am really looking forward to tomorrow) Reign Over Me (Which looks brilliant to say the least, actors breaking out of their type cast roles is always good to see) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I still need to catch Pan's Labyrinth...but there are a few good looking movies coming out before May.

- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The effects are nice, the old guy in the cemetery playing narrator in the trailer seems to sound ok, but somehow I didnt like N Cage when he was talking about himself to the reporter.... Feels like really bad acting.

- BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If this is true, that means it sucks. Which is too bad, because I was really looking forward to it. The trailer I saw with X-Men 3 was cool, but the recent ones they've been showing on tv have been really lame. But hopefully I'll at least enjoy it somewhat.
This is a much better article on the subject:

"The movie is probably not very good, based on the average Tomatometer (15 percent) of unscreened movies."- BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I'm still going to see it though. At least it's not Saw 7 or whatever they're up to now.
- zephypyre, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Nick Cage is a great contributor to projects that would never otherwise get off the ground (Dresden Files). In a world full of Fast and Furious, Ghostrider is going to be a goddamn gem.
- pineandpalm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Dresden Files? Now THAT'S talking about a great concept that had a great background and tons of potential--and was totally ruined when it was brought to TV. As a die hard fan of the books, I could barely stomach (let alone finish) the first episode on Sci-Fi. I'll never understand why producers and executive producers have this strong urge to completely overhaul and change an idea that they licensed (because it was good) in the first place.
I think Ghost Rider will be what it will be. The trailers seem close to the storyline and I'm glad to see they incorporated the 'old school' Ghost Rider on the horse. I'm hoping the movie itself has a decent plot--which there's a 50/50 chance of. It's not going to be any mind gripping, thought provoking movie--but then again most comics aren't. Entertainment is the name of the game. If it entertains me, I'll be happy.

- digitalcowboy99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Um, you are complaining about a film you haven't even SEEN yet? Half the time, the reviewers have a corn-cob up their butt and don't "get" science fiction or fantasy. I think this film looks fun. I remember thinking "Oh, my. A series about Buffy the Vampire Slayer"? How lame..." but then I got to watching it and I thought it was pretty darn entertaining. Go ahead, close yourself off, but for goodness sakes, quit being such downers about something you have NO basis for an opinion on.
- olddirtycr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This looks absolutely RETARDED. I can guarentee it will get less then a 5/10 on imdb.

"This looks absolutely like it has cognitive disabilities."
- smokeyjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This movie looks worse than awful.
- Krones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Atrocious might be the word you're looking for, or ghastly, deplorable, even *****' *****–straight and to the point. The trailers have some of the worst ***** dialogue I've heard in a long time. Sad thing is Cage is a huge Ghost Rider fan, and loves comic books, I do enjoy some of his flicks: Matchstick Men, Lord of War, and WeatherMan. If I don't like, which I won't because it looks that bad, I'm putting the blame on the director given his past work and the script. The director is just a tad better than Uwe Boll.
- trer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Only Marvel movies that work = Xmen and Spiderman
The others don't even have enough of a comic readership to justify making a movie.- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Blade is good. The sequels are kinda meh.... Xmen 3 is kinda crappy.
- BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They all COULD work, if the movie studios gave a damn.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Its not about readership its about execution, I could tell from the first preview pics that hit the net that this movie was going to be a POS, there are comics that have been made into good movies that don't have as many readers as X-men and Spiderman.
- DROB003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes but the whole reason they are making comics into movies is for the stories and the content. They dont really care about the readership as much as the ability for the story/characters to hook the masses with some glitzy special effects and loose adaptation. Hollywood is full of boring, dull writers. For every Memento or Usual Suspects there are hundreds of Hulk, Fantastic Four, etc crappy comic adaptation movies.
- WasabiBomb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Only Marvel movies that work = Xmen and Spiderman"
And they came damned close to screwing up X-men 3. You've got Phoenix, and no phoenix aura? No flight? No star-eating? What the hell?
The second movie did Phoenix better- and she was only technically Phoenix for a few seconds at the end. - Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Fantastic Four wasn't THAT bad. It as least doesn't deserve to be compared the the monstrosity that was The Hulk. Now that was a terrible movie. Fantastic Four at least has Jessica Alba and a sequel with Silver Surfer in the works.

- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"And they came damned close to screwing up X-men 3. You've got Phoenix, and no phoenix aura? No flight? No star-eating? What the hell?"
I didn't understand a ***** word you just said. Therefore, you must be a dork. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1dknighton, posting on Digg also earns you a "Dork" badge.
- DigitalKid215, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah not sure about Nick Cage and Johnny either. He doesn't look quite right for some reason. I wish they would've done and updated version of this instead of doing one based on Blaze. I use to really love GR. I might still give it a shot after I read what viewers say about it. If it gets at least a solid C, I might sneak in to see it.
- TSAU956, on 05/12/2008, -2/+0Producers should consider that just because Spiderman was good doesn't mean all the comic books will transfer over well. The most of 'The Hulk' I saw was inside a Sony Store, and it looked boring. (I also was driven past the set at Universal but that doesn't count.)
Ghost Rider has the most stupid move trailer ever. I noticed that when the fat 20 year-old comically states "And like his head was on fire and stuff!", the reporter is the same person who appears to be Nicolas Cage's love interest (who doesn't suspect anything). I'm tired of the female love interests being reporters, working in news agencies, or any other transparent attempt to give them a justifiable reason to be around the superhero's alter ego.
Nicolas Cage has picked two very bad roles recently, in two very stupid movie adaptations/remakes. I'm sure you've all seen that compilation of The Wicker Man scenes. - Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Nick Cage needs to drop the Down Syndrome Elvis accent.
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3After watching Adaptation I had a whole new level of respect for Nick Cage. He was amazing.
- qlynt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This movie would gave been great if they had "The Renegade" Lorenzo Lamas instead of Nick Cage.....His version of Johnny Blaze seems like the same dude from Gone in 60 seconds plus a flaming head

- nytewalker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Hmm...I kind of think Cage is a pretty good actor. I'm sorry that some of you don't like decent acting. I'm not saying every movie he made was good, but at least I felt he was good in them. As for Ghost Rider, they seemed to have done a good job, I'll withhold any viewpoints till AFTER i see the movie. Maybe some of you should do the same?
- jexdawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think Cage is a great actor. I just don't think he's great in this type of film.

Cage's eyebrows make him look like a depressed cocker, not a superhero....
- cannibal666, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I wonder who would win in a fight between DareDevil and Ghost Rider in a battle of the all time most crappy comic-turned-movie heroes?
- RoroCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry... but David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury was much more suck than Dare Devil and and Ghost Rider (and I haven't seen either yet) ever can be. I have seen both Punishers and they are a close in level of suck to Nick Fury.
Comic book movies are a great way to show off special effects and they give directors great freedom. Too bad most of them should not be made.
Batman Begins rules all super hero movies. The original Supermans and X-Men (NOT X-Men III) were great too. Most of the other fell short of my 33 year-old boyish expectation. - Jagdwulfe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0'Depends I have not heard who Flamehead is fighting but I am still pissed at the altering of the King Pin.

- mattxb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nicholas Cage plays depressed and jaded characters, so hes perfect in movies like Adaptation and Leaving Las Vegas and even Raising Arizona, but I cant imagine who in their right mind thought the same target audience who'd want to see a flaming skeleton ride around on a motorcycle would also want to go see a Nickolas Cage movie.

- PurpleTentacle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's Sony, the company that has continually shot itself in the foot in the last year. This probably means the movie is great.
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm going to see it so I can yell advice at the screen and laugh obnoxiously loud at the crappy effects...
- KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4despite all the negative comments about this movie, I for one, will give it a chance . . . once it's on DVD
- digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1a movie movie??
- musicbear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The fact that nicholas is in it is the kiss of death... but the trailers with the jokes in them (...is something burning?) is also a dead giveaway and the fact that they pushed it back so they could enhance a lot of the special efx. It also shows just what meat heads media moguls are that they would put the older Cage in a role that is much younger than himself. BUT, with any luck, maybe it will be like The Fantastic Four and be much better than it had any right to be...
- HisEliteness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ANY time they pull this ***** with a movie it invariably SUCKS. I for one will NOT be seeing this movie!!!
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8V for Vendetta and Sin City are two examples of comic movies done right. Hollywood should take note.
- RoroCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those are graphic novels... not comic books. Just like 300 is. 2 hour movies are much easier to make off of short graphic novels. Comics have long stories and it is hard to capture the history people have with the characters in just 2 hours. I have 20 years of X-men in my belt... My expectations are much higher for them then they are for graphic novel movies.
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope they don't ***** up the story line like they have done to so many other Comic transitions. Between Kingpin being black in Daredevil to Punisher taking place in Florida. When will they just stick to the storyline and stop screwing it up?
- Rizmaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Is there something wrong with black people? You some kind of ***** racist.
There was nothing wrong with Kingpin. He was huge. He was a crime lord. He was pretty smart and calculating. But he still beat people's asses when the time came because his hugeness was in fact lots of muscle. They pretty much nailed it.
Punisher taking place in Florida, that's a complaint. Kingpin not being white? That's bigotry. - Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not racism, it's staying true to the story. Personally I thought the guy made a great Kingpin for the movie, but it wasn't an accurate adaption of the comic book.
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Riz, I would be just as offended if they made Blade a white guy. Kingpin was a big white guy not a big black guy. If the character is of one race then keep him/her that race.
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i guess you hate the ultimate version of nick fury too, huh? you probably hate the entire ultimate universe for that very same reason...
he was a great kingpin. in THAT case, changing his race actually was one of the better points in a horrendous movie. no one else would have done the kingpin justice. maybe ving rhames, but he would have still been black.
- Rizmaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Is there something wrong with black people? You some kind of ***** racist.
- HisEliteness, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0It will suck even more than the X-Men movies, a feat previously thought impossible...
- HisEliteness, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0oh come on.. don't dig me down! did you actually think they were good? well anyway the last one was completely terrible, but i guess the first one (or two?) were ok time-killers
- HisEliteness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd rather see an Iron Man movie. I mean if you are going to make a comic-book movie, at least pick a comic that doesn't blow goat anus
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Iron Man was a poofta. At least Ghost Rider punished criminals. I mean it is bad enough Stallone ruined Judge Dred now the Spirit of Vengence will be killed by Cage.
- imag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They are making an Iron Man movie. It's due out next year and has Jon Favreau directing.
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yes and Robert I am a Drug Addicted Idiot Downey Jr is playing Tony Stark. :)
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Iron Man will be incomplete if it doesn't at least have the Black Sabbath song of the same name at least once somewhere in the movie.
- kanemano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Tony Stark is an alcoholic so I guess Robert Downey jr. sort of fits
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+4Hypothetical:
What if it's actually good?- TitaniumJackal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3> What if it's actually good?
Then all of us diggers will log on and start a new thread where we admit we were horribly wrong and that we judged too quickly. We would then apologize for being so rash and inconsiderate.
You know. Like always. - Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everyone here will furiously deny ever suggesting anything bad about it and will smugly insist that they were a loyal fan while everyone else is jumping on the bandwagon.

Check it out, they seem to really of enjoyed it! - crossmr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Marvel is taking a buckshot kind of approach to this. They're basically going to make a movie out of everything and see what sticks. Even if it doesn't stick they'll make a sequel... like say Fantastic four. DC seems to be taking a more measured approach to their movie making by at least attempting to spend some time on them to make sure they don't completely suck.
- JordanM85, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Fantastic Four was better than Superman Returns and Batman Begins....
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dear lord, Superman Returns may very well be THE single worst comic book movie in history. I thought The Hulk was bad, but that was before I saw the abomination that is Superman Returns. He lifts an entire freaking continent made entirely of kryptonite! I mean wtf? Fantastic Four may not have been great, but it most definitely doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Superman Returns..
- crossmr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't mention Superman returns did I? What I did say was that DC wasn't pumping out movies anywhere near as fast as Marvel and that they seemed to at least be trying to put a bit more effort in to it. Marvel just seems to be going at a break neck speed with getting out as many super hero movies as they can until they find one that people like, or will tolerate, or they break even on, and then make a sequel to it.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Batman Begins was a good movie. Superman Returns and Fantastic Four did suck badly.
- JohnnyHuh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This would be a much more approachable movie without the ever-over-emoting Nick Cage at the helm. It would be watchable with someone younger, cooler and less over-the-top. And then the movie would probably still suck nuggets.
- Innatech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It was obvious that this was going to be one of the worst movies ever from the first glimpse.
Whoever green-lighted this momentous pile of ***** needs a serious beat down. - Danleykubrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, this is the reason they started opening blockbuster movies wide on Fridays in the first place. Until the 70's, movies were released first on one or two screens in New York and LA, and would then go to San Francisco, Boston, etc, until finally they made their way to the rural markets, six months later. Usually, films opened on a Tuesday.
If a studio was worried about a particularly expensive film, they might release it in all markets on the same day, always a friday, because no one reads the paper on Saturday. Mind you, when I say wide in the sixties and seventies, we're talking about 300-400 screens, which was a TON then.
Then, a few major blockbusters in the seventies, which were very expensive and difficult for the studios to gage, were released this way to stave off disaster. Specifically, the films were Jaws and Star Wars.
The system quickly became the current blockbuster system we have today, although in the independent film world, films that the distributer is confident are good enough for awards consideration but not necessarily commercially viable will often open slowly, first in New York and LA, then secondary markets like San Francisco and Boston, then wide. Look at this year's The Queen. I saw the film first at home in New York, then again on a plane, before it opened wide - rushiku, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well, I'm surprised.
Put together a crappy actor and a crappy adaptation of a crappy comic book and you get a crappy movie?
Who would have thought? - hardcle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Inaccurate:
After a conversation with sources at the studio, Cinematical has learned that Lou Lumenick's original post is no longer accurate. Ghost Rider is screening for critics tonight in Los Angeles, and will continue screening until its release date. Whether this turnaround came in response to the recent media flurry, we do not know, but we apologize for passing on any bad gossip.
http://www.cinematical.com/2007/02/08/ghost-rider-to-be-held-from-critics/ - Itsjustnoah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This movie looks horrid.
count me out. - 5hop4orce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do you justify the editorializing in that headline? The article says that a lot of good movies have been withheld from critics.
- Helenbo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Boycott. Everything. Sony.
- Krymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Q. F. T.
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't think critics should see any movie early. They should have to wait like the rest of us.
- BonhamsGhost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This movie is going to be so horrible. The commercials make it look like a comedy, which is ridiculous for Ghost Rider. Nick Cage sucks. They've barely shown any new CGI since the first trailer, which leads me to believe it's not very good. Eva Mendes getting it doggy style would probably be the only thing that would make me see this movie.
Marvel should be embarrassed how much better 300 is going to be then this - steger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2KILLING ME ISN'T GOING TO BRING YOUR HONEY BACK!!
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cage's, "grecian formula", hair looks unrealistic.
- originalG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Boycott. Everything. Sony."
Agreed. The movie probably has a root kit installed or its a ploy to shut down yet another good Japanese game site. Any suprise this is going to suck? Nicolas Cage is one of THE worst actors. He and John Travolta. In fact, I thought the world would end when they did "Face Off". Hoooo Gawd... that was baaaad. -
