- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -21/+92mickey rourke should have won best actor.
- kingofinternet, on 02/23/2009, -0/+37if only the pulitzer, fields medal, booker, nobel, etc. were as big of a deal in popular culture.
- KineticShampoo, on 02/23/2009, -3/+36He didn't go full retard.
- petethepanda, on 02/23/2009, -2/+35I'm kind of miffed at the lack of love for In Bruges, The Wrestler and Wall-E (the best animated feature consolation award doesn't count).
Especially In Bruges. The fact that anything, Milk or otherwise, beat it for best original screenplay is ridiculous. - KimmyGibbler, on 02/23/2009, -4/+35The Dark Knight was in no way the best picture of the year, but it was certainly better than The Reader. Unfortunately, however, the academy feels it necessary to praise any movie about the Holocaust, irregardless of how good it actually is
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -20/+47Seriously who really cares about the oscars anymore?
- jdames1980, on 02/23/2009, -15/+39No, Sean Penn was incredible as Harvey Milk.
- kawaiirobo, on 02/23/2009, -5/+28Rourke was robbed. I liked Sean Penn in Milk, he did a fantastic job, but let's face it, he only won because it was a movie about a gay man who suffered injustice. Rourke's portrait of a man in pain was far more honest and real.
- mysn239, on 02/23/2009, -8/+30It was the great seeing most of the cast of slumdog in the end
- aufte, on 02/23/2009, -3/+23When I heard about that movie I said "oh it's about a gay guy, I bet he wins the Oscar for that." But it was a decent movie, I'm just happy Wall-E and Heath Ledger won.
- ceredron, on 02/23/2009, -0/+19have you seen that serendipitous episode of "extras" where kate winslet says "you win an oscar if you do a holocaust movie"? Like, it was hilariously on cue for this year's awards. So amazingly accurate.
- onestrawplz, on 02/23/2009, -21/+40Mickey Rourke essentially played himself in The Wrestler. It wasn't a challenge for him at all.
Sean Penn was awesome in Milk. - thh204, on 02/23/2009, -7/+25If Penn didn't win this time around, he would have played a gay, mentally handicapped person next. Guy does anything for an Oscar.
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -4/+22If The Dark Knight took home Best Picture, it would be proof that the awards system is seriously flawed. I know it was really popular and has raked in over a billion dollars to date, but goddamn, you fanboys need to calm down.
- SaranWrap, on 02/23/2009, -9/+27That movie "Milk" was so gay.
- Smokeydabear, on 02/23/2009, -7/+25I hate how the media reports that the public isn't interested in the Oscars anymore, and how the viewership is way down, but then spouts out stories about what the ***** celebrities are wearing. ***** the Oscars, no one gives a ***** what Kate Winslet was wearing.
- Anand999, on 02/23/2009, -2/+19TDK wouldn't and shouldn't have won over Slumdog Millionaire, so it's kind of pointless anyway.
Anyway, if we're going to talk about mainstream movies that should have been in the running, I think Wall-E would have had a better chance over TDK. It's too bad animated movies get stuck in the "Best Animated" category and can't go for the big prize. - analogkid01, on 02/23/2009, -0/+15Just make sure you never go full retard.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/23/2009, -7/+21The Oscars, where people win for one of 3 reasons
because of money thrown to the Academy, because the Academy wants to show off their elitist and profound taste in the art of film, or because the actor/director is near the end of his career/life even though they performed/directed better and should have won years ago. - diggapleeeze, on 02/23/2009, -2/+16The 30+ million people who watched it last night?
- thegamingguy, on 02/23/2009, -20/+33I have a hard time dealing with the Dark Knight being absent from the director and best film categories. The Academy still won't let the mainstream taint their "art".
- drlha, on 02/23/2009, -1/+13Well Slumdog was the big winner, and its made close to $100M in the USA so far, which I think would define it as mainstream. I agree however, most of the movies in the best picture categories were movies that most people won't have even had a chance to see. We need to move away from the model of having all the "worthy" movies limited released in late December to qualify for Oscars.
- Mookeh, on 02/23/2009, -2/+14Like that time they totally snubbed Lord of the Rings? Oh, wait... But you're right though, Dark Knight should have gotten a nomination.
- MostNutsEver, on 02/23/2009, -4/+16I'm glad Kate Winslet finally won an Oscar, maybe not for this movie, but I'm glad she's got a little gold man.
- ChromaVita, on 02/23/2009, -4/+13Since when is it wrong to work mostly on movies that have a strong message?
- BabyWookie, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8The surest was to win an Oscar is to make an uplifting tale of a movie about a mentally challenged, homosexual man with AIDS surviving the Holocaust.
- ironhide, on 02/23/2009, -3/+11I'm quite happy when Kate wears nothing at all.
- dOOBiEx213, on 02/23/2009, -1/+9regardless*
- tdogg241, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8I still can't believe he was nominated for Tropic Thunder. Sure, he was easily the best part of the movie, but one of the best supporting roles of 2008? I don't think so.
- cc1263, on 02/23/2009, -1/+8In Bruges got the shaft. It was the best writing I've seen this year. Yes, Milk was an original screenplay, but not in the same sense In Bruges was.
- DjOverEZ, on 02/23/2009, -1/+7Sean Penn had tons and tons of footage and writings to embody the character of Harvey Milk, Rourke had to create the character of "The Ram" based only on the script. Though both performances were amazing, I feel that it takes much more to embody a fictional character than to mimic one who was a real person.
- lilmentor3, on 02/23/2009, -3/+9apparently you do.
- mizike, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6Totally agree. I also couldn't believe what a POS Tropic Thunder was overall. Stiller hasn't been genuinely funny since zoolander, Jack Black barely had a role at all, and Downey Jr.'s blackface bit was funny for 20 minutes, but by the end of the movie had been completely run into the ground (at least it wasn't as bad as the simple jack throwaway joke turning into a major plot device).
- syn3rgyz, on 02/23/2009, -7/+13I actually believe Aaron Eckhart should have been nominated at least.
- xienze, on 02/23/2009, -7/+12Pretty much. I saw Slumdog Millionaire, and while it was pretty good, it wasn't "8 Oscars" good. If that movie took place in, I dunno, the south side of Chicago and not Mumbai it would've been just another movie to them.
- RussLieber, on 02/23/2009, -2/+7thats how the podium should look like for the best picture acceptance speech. a movie is the works of the entire crew not just the producer.
- robEstyles, on 02/23/2009, -2/+7Mickey Rourke created a character and made it believable on screen. Sean Penn imitated someone else. I'm not taking away Penn's performance it was great, I just think its harder to create a character and make it that believable the way Rourke did compared to just studying a real-life character and imitating it.
- phrenzy, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6@KineticShampoo, actually he DID go full retard in I AM SAM, and that's why he didn't get an oscar for that role (according to Lazarus)
- PaisleyTeal, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6renemartini--
it's a reference to an episode of south park and d3dm's stressing the accent of the person who said it. - lilhurt38, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4Robert Downey Jr. will win an Oscar within the next 3 years. He seems to be going after roles that will get him nominated and the Academy knows that they've overlooked him. I'd say he'd get nominated for the Soloist, but we won't know how good the movie is until it comes out. It looks good, but there is always a possibility that it will be bad or other movies will be better.Jamie Foxx will be playing a schizophrenic, so the Academy will love it. A mentally unstable/disabled character always wins brownie points with the Academy.
- chugatussin, on 02/23/2009, -2/+6take your negative comments elsewhere
- RetepNamenots, on 02/23/2009, -4/+8Just because the ending didn't shock you doesn't make it a bad piece of film...
- alvination, on 02/23/2009, -5/+9I hate Sean Penn even more now. RAM JAM
- tizle, on 02/23/2009, -8/+12I was glad that Heath Ledger won. However, the academy definitely needs acknowledge mainstream movies more, especially if they want better ratings.
- nellshini, on 02/23/2009, -2/+6Don't forget the Turing. I know you said etc, but use techies have our awards too.
- cannonball, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5A friend of mine tweet this, and it sums it up best:
How come no one told me "In Bruges" is hilarious and dark and that it even makes Colin Farrell likeable? You need to tell me these things. - acacia987, on 02/23/2009, -1/+4i think that is a south park reference.. "they took our jerbs" funny episode, so no those kids probably cant spell better then that guy.
- marcduke, on 02/23/2009, -2/+5Well said, and exactly what I was thinking as Sean Penn babbled on during his acceptance speech.
- staffa, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3Can't say I agree with you, but we will never really know.
- wrathbone, on 02/23/2009, -5/+8If you knew anything about acting, you would realize it would be incredibly hard to play yourself, if he had indeed done that.
Which he didn't.
Either could have won that oscar, and completely earned it. -
