i'll resubmit with this article - Chexee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1drathen : yeah, i almost felt like crying when i read it. firefly has found a pretty hardcore following, if i were Joss, I don't think I could bear to give it up.
- bytor7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just bought my copy of Serenity.
- HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The movie was a great way to end the series, but I'm not totally convinced there will never be anything more, it's just Whedon has to move on for now. I imagine if in 5 years Universal wanted to make a sequel/prequel, Joss could come up with another story.
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Can we have a link to the original article...

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Fox showed them completely out of order. Firefly is best experienced when shown in order. Yes, it makes a difference.
Imagine watching Battlestar Galactica out-of-order."
The Geek meter just broke the needle on the above comment. - jschrab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1re:"The TV series was a flop, the movie was flop, about time JW faced up to reality. It has some rabid fans for sure, but not enough to pay the bills."
Considering that the DVD box set of the TV series was in Amazon's top-50 for *months*, I wouldn't be too sure about that.
Truth be told though, as a Firefly-fan, I am ready to move on . Firefly worked better in episodic format on the small screen and I don't think it's in the cards for a second chance at that. - MicahC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Money talks. If fans keep pumping money into the franchise, it will survive. Two words... "STAR TREK".
- MerinoOtt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I loved the show and the movie. I would love to see if back on TV. SciFi being the optimal place for it. They know how to do series.
People tend to forget that lots of factors were possibly involved in the TV show not having good ratings; least of which was that fox doesn't have a clue where to put certain types of shows.
Also, people forget that the X-Files had terrible ratings to begin with. Luckily, Fox was new back then and even shows with low ratings were allowed to survive for a little while. In the current era, shows just aren't given enough chance. This was the type of show that would have built up a large word of mouth following (as can be seen by the series DVD sales).
Again, I would love it if the show returned, or even remained alive in the movie realm. But if it's dead, then it's dead. I'll move on, just as I did when Max Headroom was canceled :) - firebird2110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Production budget $39 million.
Worldwide box office $38,325,883.
Despite what some people will tell you, this is NOT breaking even because the movie company only gets about half of that. What, you think your local multiplex was showing it out of the goodness of their hearts?
So DVD sales? Lets say a generous $10 a pop profit. They'll have to sell 2 MILLION to break even, and that's totally ignoring the publicity budget for both the movie and the DVD release.
OK, they'll make a little more on the TV rights, but not that much. Face it boys and girls, the movie is not going to turn a profit. - bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay can we please just link to the original article instead of some "blogger" paraphrasing it and injecting his/her own opinion? Livejournal is the bottom of the barrel. that's like asking a hobo what he/she raid in the paper when the newspaper stand is just 5 feet away. Jeesh.
- Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seumas, did you watch the series on Fox or on Sci-Fi channel?
Fox showed them completely out of order. Firefly is best experienced when shown in order. Yes, it makes a difference.
Imagine watching Battlestar Galactica out-of-order.
Many people disliked Firefly until they saw it on DVD or the Sci-Fi channel (which shown them in order). - Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wait until the Hero of Canton gets wind of this... Heads will roll!
- macslut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I loved the TV show. I really loved the movie, but the TV show failed to get rating and the movie failed at the box office ($35 million worldwide with a budget of $40 million).
The DVDs (of the series and the movie) are doing very well...#1 on Amazon for the movie and #6 for the series set.
Even if in the end the movie goes into profitability, it seems less likely that a sequel would. Combine the constraints that would be put on a sequel with the way the movie wrapped things up so nicely, and I could see why Joss would be very reluctant to pursue this any more. - rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah well, we all saw it coming. If the fans want more, they'll have to pester Joss and the studio like they did last time.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Star Trek on the tube in years! And now this...I need a drink.
To quote Jayne: (remarking on the unappetizing meal Simon's made for himself) "Smells like crotch." - emperor799, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I call *****.

A direct quote from Joss's mouth: "The, um, the movie is finished. And the story is told. The world is not finished. There’s more to tell, but that’s always the case with everything I do and whether I get the chance to tell [it] or not it is up to somebody else. So I made sure that this movie had completion and didn’t feel like a glorified prequel. It’s its own piece and it wraps everything up. I have a sense of closure that I never had, and I can walk away satisfied. But if somebody tells me not to walk away, I’ll turn right back around."
No digg. - joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm buying Serenity for my bro fro Christmas.
Give the DVD to friends and familiy -- maybe to somebody that hasn't heard much of it. - MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
My time with thie franchise was short. I saw the movie, loved it, then watched the series on DVD and fell in love all over again. This sucks, but life moves on.
Battlestar Galactica kicks the ass, and it isn't going away anytime soon. If you haven't been watching BSG, pick up the mini-series because it's the start of the whole story, then season 1 which picks up where the mini series left off. ( I think the season 1 DVD set includes the mini series). Season two comes out on DVD...T O D A Y. - carlosreif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:'(
I miss it already... sad.. sad... - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nnnnnoooooooo, I might cry. I don't know if it would have changed anything if Fox released the episodes in the correct order. It probably would have made a slight difference, but not that much. I didn't even hear of Firefly until I accidently saw it on the Sci-Fi channel. Now after Serenity, I'm a huge fan. Hopefully some company picks it up sometime in the near future.
- randyzaia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this means no more Firefly stories on Digg, then hallelujah!
- fuerion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What happened to the made for tv movie on sci-fi? I thought I read a dugg article saying that was happening?

taken the wrong way? been looking more into the actual issue - Rndm_Tngnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing about this in Variety, fyi...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DVD sales aren't going to save Firefly/Serenity either, sorry. The project's swimming in the red.
This may surprise some of you, but media companies like Fox and Universal are in business to make lots of money, not just to break even and appease the overly zealous fans of niche shows.
The Firefly/Serenity universe doesn't have to die. There's always comic books, novels, and other forms of media less costly to produce than television or motion pictures to tell the story. Somehow, I don't think Joss is going to invest a lot of time doing that though, not with Wonder Woman and other television and motion picture projects on his plate. - jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, most people I know (even people who aren't really Firefly fans) are buying the DVD when it comes out. Maybe that will sway the studios and Josh. Studios need to come to the realization that many people are happy with waiting for the DVD release instead of going to a theatre.
- babyphatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and to quote it for the lazy asses...
And after that, who knows? A sequel? Another series?
"It would depend on huge numbers from the DVD," writer/director Whedon allows. "Obviously, we are still shy of making our money back from the box office. But we are within shouting distance. Still, it would have to blow up pretty huge for a sequel to be called for.
"Mind you, stranger things have happened. And they do seem to happen to me. So it's not like I'm shutting the door." - jmullman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, I dugg before I had time to actually consider that TODAY was when the DVD came out. They'll make a decision based on sales, I can guarantee.
- babyphatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is BS!
how about a real article...
http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1134946211503&call_pageid=968867495754&col=969483191630 - RapidEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Major Bummer...
Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will grow some cajones in a couple of years - maybe... - ryanknapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If the article is correct, then Whedon is moving on with his life until there is a definite opportunity to create more. He can't just spend the rest of his career begging for someone to finance another venture.
Also, I am a Firefly fanatic. I'd stop eating if it would help The Cause. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0f*** that sucks!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What kind of a smacktard links to livejournal? I'm going to post a link to my chode.
- LoneBannana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah. reminds me of the MST3K movie. They had a big fan base, but the distributors (MCA, i think) spent all their advertising money on Barb Wire, the Pamela Anderson Movie.
Ya see, Big Boobs sell tickets. Real stories have no chance.
and oh yeah, i am going to buy a DVD. Not a rabid fan, but the DVD made good viewing. - EbulaJonez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Firefly was the first tv show that actually didn't feel like I was watching someone else... I felt very close to the characters... I really hope this issn't true....
- Grandfinale1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Over, its all over"

- dannighe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*cries*
- copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Serenity was selling really well at the local Best Buy here. I stopped in at lunch and had a hard time finding the widescreen version. There were tons of fullscreen copies but not many widescreen left.
- Yoda716, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
- iceboxqs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sad if it is true. Was a great series.
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Joss Whedon's best work was on Roseanne. He penned some of the best episodes of that series.
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Firefly is dead. I loved the series. Serenity is in my Xmas stocking.
Will there be a "Firefly: TNG"? - PlayWithFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a leaf on the wind
Watch how I soar
sucks. I'll take anything now: comic book, cartoon, broadway muscical, a puppet show... I just want more firefly - jd230, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sad to see the show die if this is true.
I could care less about Buffy, but I found Firefly to be a nice new way of telling a sci-fi story. - funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I named my website after a catch phrase from Firefly http://www.shiiiny.com
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok serenity made even and today with the release on dvd.. this is where the big bucks are... this will bring in at least 150 million in dvd sales for sure...
