- amillion3, on 10/10/2007, -3/+71I'd love to see a Serenity II, but I'm still saddened at the sudden loss of Wash!
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -4/+53Somewhat misleading.
Yes, if the DVD sells phenomenally, there's a chance. That's unlikely, however. I doubt these second release DVDs that come years later with more extras ever do all that well (short of Star Wars perhaps).
Also, he makes a very important point. Many of the actors in the cast are doing quite well on other projects. The cost of getting them back together would likely be higher than for the first movie. That hampers it even more.
I'd love to see Serenity II, but I don't think it's too likely... - ChemEng, on 10/10/2007, -1/+47Forget Wash, I wanted to know Book's back story...
- Monkeybrains, on 10/10/2007, -2/+44Shiny
- danielrh9, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34Great. Now Firefly fans will practically hold people at gunpoint to buy the new DVD.
- DanCMH, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30I'd love to see the Sci Fi Channel pick up this property and run with it... I'm sure there are a million legal reasons why it couldnt but it's fun to think about.
- Kbennett, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24I'll happily buy the collectors edition of Serenity, but count me amongst those who would rather see the show return than another cinematic attempt to cram a season of storyline into two hours. That, as evidenced by comments from Whedon and some of the actors is almost assuredly never going to happen, so I guess I'll pay $20 for the extra footage and extended cut and continue to curse the Fox executives who wouldn't know a good show if it ***** in their cereal.
- ChemEng, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23And in other news --- Vader is Luke's dad.
- nottanner, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24When the title said the door was cracked, I had no idea how small the crack would be.
Any light coming through is refreshing though. I'd watch Serenity II, and I'll definitely buy the DVD - Zeonix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23I'm sure Browncoats from around the world will buy several copies of the DVD just to up the chances of this coming true. Personally, I'd rather they bring back the series, although I think I remember Whedon saying that won't ever happen.
- Essefgy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20"Serenity II" Now!
- Balanced, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Dude, it's been out for years. Spoiler time is long past.
- Ottersmash, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15NOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo
- duane71, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Personally, I'll be buying a second copy of the DVD... since I didn't look closely enough at it the first time and bought the "full screen" version. Yuck.
- fnaqzna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Here's the entire interview:
http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=6846 - BlackTye, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Yes... Yes. Everything looks good from here.
- bseven, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I'll use my VERY favorite gun.
- YuriSakazaki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+82 people die, hardly everyone.
- Pssdoff, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Prequel?
- trelixus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7This is a fertile land. We will thrive over all of this land, and we shall call it... "This Land"
- mklopez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9If I remember correctly, it did very well, enough to make up (somehow) for the disappointing box office numbers, but not enough to justify a sequel.
I believe this special edition will do well. I personally have been waiting for it for some time! - Zeonix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Battlestar brought fans to the channel, who later convinced everyone else to watch it, expanding the show's audience. Firefly would work in the same exact way, although Sci-Fi might only be big enough for one space drama (although BSG is ending this season).
- deathandtaverns, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Fox exec "Hey Joss, I will give you $50 would you tell the internet that if they buy this DVD you might make another movie? Those nerds will buy anything"
- GrassrootsNinja, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Impressive, now release your anger.
- Balanced, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It's been over a year. I think anyone who wants to see it has, OK. Wash dies. Deal with it. If you want to see more of a good series, don't argue with every direction the creator of the series takes, OK?
- MateyO, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9What??!?! what happened to Wash? Dammit! Digg needs spoiler boxes.
;) - Tivor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Someone didn't watch the movie, obviously.
- sark28, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I know I'd watch it!
- dartmanx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Reason 1: Fox owns the rights, and they will refuse to release them out of pure spite.
Reasons 2 - 99: See reason 1. - joshua5, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7"So give me hope for a Serenity II
JW: Hope for it probably rests with this DVD.
So then you’re saying we’ve got a chance? "
haha clinging on to blind hope - mandarin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Hope it does. He's probably measuring the sales from the DVDs with his decision to bring them back...
- llamabread, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5SciFi channel needs to stop making their crappy B movies that they have on Saturdays and make a new Firefly series. I'm holding out hope that when Battlestar Galactica ends next year (Boo) they will have the resources to bring back Firefly.
- angusm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I enjoyed "Firefly" and "Serenity", so I may not be an unbiased judge, but it does seem strange that the studios wouldn't want to renew, given that the show has a proven fanatical following, the cast has a chemistry that works, and the whole thing comes from a creator with a good track record. I presume it's down to opportunity cost: "Sure, we'll make money with 'Firefly', but not a lot of money. Whereas if we spend the same amount of money and studio time making something different, maybe we'll do much better."
I think they're foolish to pass up the chance, but I can see their point. Still, if 'something different' turns out to be another reality show or yet another series about goddamn urban vampires, someone should throw rocks at them. Big pointy rocks. - myxyplik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No longer involved, unfortunately.
- Balanced, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5This is the kind of sentiment that makes me wonder if the biggest threat to Firefly (and similar 'niche' shows/movies/etc.) is the fanbase. Sometimes the creators feel the need to shake things up and roll with it. It's not nice, but it's at least more meaningful than having a stream of replaceable red shirts get killed.
- bjs3171, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6i'd LOVE another serenity, or the continuation of the show, but Wash was crucial comic relief, and he's dead. and if they just replace him with another funny character, it becomes formulaic.
- razor150, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Did you see a different movie then I did? Did the Serenity crash at the end?
- MSF2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't know the exact numbers but It's consistently been on the top seller list on Amazon. The whole reason that they made a Special Edition is because the first DVD did so well.
- h4mx0r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I for one, will support the DVD sales just to hope for Serenity 2. Who's with me?
- jake8689, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4maybe a spinoff seris about the war, hell sci-fi will buy it they'll buy anything
- Tivor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5In my mind, the door had been all but locked and sealed. Now I see it's slightly ajar. Only very slightly, but still.
That's refreshing enough for me, and enough to put me in a good mood for a while. :) - Balanced, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4He might have rented.
- wisebob134, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3BUY THE DVD Serenity 2> $20
- andburn1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Random and pointless? If you knew anything about storytelling, you would know that in order to have the audience fear for the lives of the characters, one of them had to die. In this way, viewers may have even thought "oh ***** they're all gunna die being noble."
- krakelohm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6WOOSH!
- nihility, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7How well did the first DVD sell? I figure pretty well, and that should've really been the benchmark used for a sequel.
- hockey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Here have a cookie.
- XBSHX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Are you stupid?
- Rigbymatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You're forgetting Joss has the big red button, he can recall the whole cast whenever he wants
(and i don't think i've ever seen actors more dedicated to a project). - alexforcefive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5that's impossible!
