- socivitus, on 11/09/2009, -0/+51God help us all if this thing doesn't profit. If I hear about a Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 I'm going to kill myself.

bury. - scruffybr, on 11/09/2009, -6/+49I smell a FLOP,
- diggerado, on 11/09/2009, -1/+28Well, Waterworld was hugely expensive and look at it's popularity now.
- KZWings, on 11/09/2009, -1/+24Actually, this is exactly what i want: "an original and unfamiliar story."
But maybe i'm being selfish. Anyone else sick of all the reboots, remakes, sequels, prequels, movies from books, and comic books? - GhettoHmbrglr, on 11/09/2009, -2/+25James Cameron can do whatever the ***** he wants. I have high hopes that this will not flop.
- blueduck4ever, on 11/09/2009, -2/+23Maybe he should have used some of that 500 million to make a decent trailer.
- Awwzm, on 11/09/2009, -4/+22He probably thinks it'll be like Titanic, the film. But it sounds like it could end up like the real Titanic.
- DemDude, on 11/09/2009, -0/+17Come on people, it's James Cameron! When you hear the name James Cameron, you may think "Titanic" (not one of my favorites plot-wise, but still the highest grossing film of all time!), but what you really should think is Terminator 1+2 (yes, he didn't have anything to do with 3 and 4!), Aliens, The Abyss (which may not be the most poplular film, but I still like it, and it certainly is special in a good way), stuff like that.
By now, that guy directs a movie every five years, and everything he touches turns to gold. I am very confident that Avatar will not only be a hit, but another _great_ movie, and probably a milestone in 3D-Cinema. It's James ***** Cameron, people! - NickDouglas, on 11/09/2009, -1/+17Original story... you mean this isn't a Fern Gully remake?
- EddiePotato, on 11/09/2009, -0/+14It is king of that coveted 2 PM slot on budget cable channels!
- iDaF, on 11/09/2009, -1/+15Naked alien porn plz

- jamest71, on 11/09/2009, -0/+9Have some faith. He made Titanic and Aquaman, both beat Spiderman at the box office.
- WannabeMuse, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8Buried for member login...
- rssmith, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8I'm cautiously optimistic about this movie. Although "original story" might be incorrect, isn't this just Pocahontas in space? Civilized people invade territory of uncivilized, but noble people, representative from civilized nation falls in love with native, tries to help her stop the invasion... I'm talking of course about the fictionalized Pocahontas, not the historically accurate one.
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8Aquaman > Avatar
- mkriss5681, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8Most Epic FLOP Ever
- Lowenfels, on 11/09/2009, -1/+8It looks like a piece of crap to me, but then again, everyone was saying that Titanic was gonna be a huge flop before that came out, and that also looked like crap to me. And we all know how that turned out...
- dillonflynn, on 11/09/2009, -1/+7You know, I feel like tacking on another couple hundred million dollars to Avatar's budget could be the key to box office success.
- Laminarcissus, on 11/09/2009, -1/+7>>>Can a movie studio make money on a film based on an original and unfamiliar story, with no Hollywood superstars, a vanishing DVD market and a price tag approaching $500 million?
Nope. - Shakuras, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6Agree 100%
- inactive, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6Sick of this train of thought.
Adjust for inflation on past movies, then compare price tags. Same applies for "highest grossing movie".
Titanic appears to be on top, but it's REALLY not when you take into account older movies and adjust accordingly. - crickey23, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5I came here to say just that. Someone mentioned that to me a long time ago, and after giving it much thought I realized Avatar is just that: An over-budget, fancy remake of Fern Gully.
I bet the original is still better. - yosafbridge, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5There is no reason that a movie should have to cost $500 million unless someone is being incredibly wasteful.
When is Hollywood going to get it into their heads that it's not about how much you spend it's about how you use the money you have.
It's incredibly sad that this ONE movie cost more than all THREE Lord of the Rings films put together. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5Um, excuse me, this is the NEGATIVE comments section.
You're doing it wrong, and you can leave now. - BigBambino, on 11/09/2009, -2/+7This movie looks pretty damn good.
You can bet your bottom dollar that this thing will be plastered all over your whopper combo and happy meals. - zbeast, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5I've been looking forward to seeing this film ever since I heard he was working on the project.
Cameron is a super star director. What he does end up being gold.
So leave the man alone and let him work.. I'm pumped to see this film.
So is everyone I know. - inactive, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5That is what they said about another James Cameron movie that was breaking records for being the most expensive movies ever. EVERY magazine and TV show talked about how the Titanic fiasco would sink his career. (Pun intended, but not mine...that is what hte media was saying.)
Something tells me that turned out OK for him. - 808atheist, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4Then adjust for the number of potential customers alive at the time, and it becomes even more uneven.
- ericdano, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4Abyss is an amazing movie. Still.
- PixelMagic, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5It might make me "uncool" but I like Titanic. I mean, I can only watch it every few years. It's a long movie to endure.
- TomKarpik, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4You hear that, PixelMagic? Some random Internet arm-chair film critic has an opinion about your taste in cinema.
- askantik, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4I can't read the ***** article because I'm not gonna sign up for a NYT account, but how is Sigourney Weaver not a "Hollywood superstar?" She annoys me, but that doesn't change the fact that she is a pretty big name. Zoe Saldaña was in Star Trek and one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
- Rell812, on 11/09/2009, -4/+8So was anyone else looking forward to this until they saw the trailers?
And then this got me thinking...James Cameron has NEVER done anything revolutionary in terms of storytelling. The biggest accomplishment he has was Terminator 2, which is only for the special effects rather than anything really conceptually meaningful. So I have no idea why I thought this movie was going to be so great, especially since the buzz was surrounding the special effects and not any sort of progressiveness or boldness of storyline. After thinking this I realized the trailers weren't a letdown because there wasn't a whole lot to get excited for in the first place.
I'll probably end up seeing the movie one of the weekends I visit home just because it looks like a fun soft science fiction movie that my dad and brother would enjoy. - askantik, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5"You named your kid after ***** Titanic?" *looks to other kid* "What's this one's name? *****' Shrek?"
- Perdido, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4I really hope you´re kidding.
If you are, I´m digging you for the quality of the delivery.
If you´re not, I´m digging you for the absurdity of your statement.
Anyways, you´re still getting dugg, so brace yourself. - DrDragun, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4I really hope I'm wrong about this, but it looks like all the ***** bad parts of Return of the Jedi made into a full length 3d movie. Jungle tribes fighting spaceships with bow+arrow, etc, and winning because they're virtuous.
- gutistg, on 11/09/2009, -2/+6It doesn't make you uncool, it just means you have poor taste in cinema.
- mogebier, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5The trailer makes it look like a CGI snoozefest.
- Tyrghast, on 11/09/2009, -3/+6One of the most expensive movies ever made and that's the best CGI they can pull off? I'd be embarrassed to have my name in the credits.
- anenokoji, on 11/09/2009, -2/+5Except this isn't an original story.
- sp3opl3s, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4I enjoyed all of Cameron's movies, T2 is one of my all time favorite movies. He knows how to tell a good story, not just a FX-athon movie. I think it will be a great movie from what I have seen it looks like a really cool idea.
- macmcraeart, on 11/09/2009, -4/+7Biggest flop in history?
- scruffybr, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3Will it beat Waterworld as the most EPIC FLOP, I think so :)
- jamest71, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3It was great. Vincent Chase was awesome.
- GrammerPants, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3That movie actually hit number one for that opening weekend, I'm sure they will make another.
- PowderedToasty, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3Even true lies was good. If that guy made a sex tape I bet it would be the best ever.
- scruffybr, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I wish I could say that this will be good as I would love it to be awesome but the trailer poor, not a good start
- CrazedLeper, on 11/09/2009, -3/+5Or cities we could have bombed. That one would be more likely.
