- satanFeX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49its happened before. he sometimes drives normal cars before getting in his aston. also, lets not forget that aston martin is owned by ford.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33And BMW owns Mini. That doesn't make a Mini a BMW, nor does Ford owning Aston Martin and Jaguar make James Bond driving a Mondeo any less lame.
- Simen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Connery and Moore stopped playing Bond a long time ago.
- darkwater614, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22hmmmmm sounds like the bmw car and bike in the other bond
MONEY TALK ! ! ! WHATS NEXT BATMAN DRIVE A HONDA???? - alexp2ad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17RTA:
"Reports said that although James Bond will still drive an Aston Martin in most of the film, he'll be seen at the beginning of the film driving the Mondeo to his hotel in the Bahamas."
So it's not going to be his bond car, it's basically a rental car you'll see for very little time. - allenb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19@Suits:
"The Ford Mondeo, really? Was someone in Italy on a Monday when they named it? Bleh, shoulda used the mustang. :("
If you'd ever stepped out of North America, you'd know about the Ford Mondeo. It's been around since 1993, it's not a new name.
In England it's an extremely popular, if somewhat stigmatised, vehicle.
But regardless, a British Secret Agent wouldn't drive a Mustang. Not in a million years. - etjazz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15this "average human Bond" image will surely make him more popular. For the next Bond movie I'm guessing he will:
- date average american fat chicks
- drive a prius
- prefers exercise over a dry martini
and the plot will be how he saves the world from global warming, changing one habit at a time - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Batman carpools Small Children now on his way to fighting crimes.
It's more Economical! - duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, but it was a rental, and Jill St. John picked it out.
Bond in a Ford - this will be the first movie where he doesn't get laid, LOL.
BTW, they already did the Yugo joke in the Dragnet movie. - Coven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10A Honda wouldn't be a bad idea for Batman. Imagine how bad his gas mileage is with that afterburner.
- PJohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8ga7sh: what's the matter, get your feelings hurt? It's ok if you own a Hyundai - it's not like you were going to get laid anyhow. ;-)

Someone has never seen Diamonds Are Forever. - frednofr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8So, they will start suing filesharers for downloading a two hour long Ford commercial...
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8At least it's not a Hyundai.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He drove a Mustang in Las Vegas in Diamonds are Forever.

http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/casinoroyale/ - whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i'm sorry... did someone use "reliable" and hyundai in the same statement?
hyundais only seem reliable because after a few hundred miles you just throw them out and get a new one from the bubble gum machine at the grocery store. - jimio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Lets not forget he has driven some very sub standard vehicles in many films. A Renault 19? Citroen 2CV? AMC Hornet? A Mini Moke for gods sake!
So him driving a Mondeo is hardly the pits by his standards!
No Digg! - Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The Mondeo looks great. For that matter, so does Daniel Craig. It was about time they used somebody who actually looks like he might be able to kill a man and start doing Bond movies as actual spy films, rather than self-parodies. Bond's supposed to be somebody you'd be scared to meet in an alley, not a fop. Goldeneye was great and Brosnan tried, but he just got a bad run of films after the first one. Here's hoping the writers have wised up.
- ga7sh, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8whats wrong with hyundai?
they're more reliable than the pos that is a ford - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did you pet the Webserver too hard?
- dslartoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fords are NOT always pieces of crap.
I've owned three Fords. The first was a 1979 Granada which was my first car. Replaced the timing chain on it but otherwise had no problems in the two years I owned it. The second was a 1988 Escort LX which lasted me for twelve years and more than 150,000 miles (and the only reason it died when it did was because I'd beaten it up doing pizza delivery). The third is my current 1998 Mustang GT which has had the usual maintenance items (tires, brakes, filters, etc.) replaced on it but has caused me zero other problems. It's got 125K miles on it so far and runs like it just came off the assembly line.
Ford's made great strides towards making reliable automobiles. That said, I still think Bond has no business in one. Aston-Martin, baby. :) - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dear lord....
- DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um...did you forget the Thunderbird scene? Granted, it wasn't bond...but still.
- Qba73, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is the mondeo they were referring to.
http://www.caradisiac.com/php/essai_tun/doss/doss276/mondial-paris-ford-7.php - bendyline, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would Agree, if Ford of America wanted to get back in the Black they just need to let their European counterparts take over, Start selling the Ka, the Focus ST, Mondeo, the S-MAX, Pretty much anything they sell over there is better than the left overs we get here. If only we had shows here like Top Gear and Fifth Gear to inform people of just how bad American cars are. Maybe we'd start to see some real changes then.
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The least appealing car Bond ever drove was probably the AMC Hornet in The Man With The Golden Gun.
- brimg87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People don't realize that Fords are actually quite high quality now. See, Ford Fusion.
- daspacepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bond sells out. How unexpectedly typical.
- i64X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We did have Top Gear here for while - they edited out all of the American car bashing and didn't show us the sweet "domestic" (big 3) cars that other countries get that we don't here in the US.
Not joking. - Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bond movies have always had product placement, and the ones with Brosnan had a ton. Like his Sony Ericcson "spy phone". I can't imagine how you could think it will have any impact whatsoever on the quality of the film.
- dslartoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1abagchee:
Damn and blast. Adding a second comment here. I was editing the previous one and got distracted by something else.
The timing belt replacement was NOT in the first two years. The car was a 1979 model which I bought in 1989. The timing chain was replaced in 1991, twelve years after the car was built, which is not, I submit, unreasonable.
I'm well aware that statistically I am not a large sample size, but three vehicles manufactured from the range of years 1979-1998 and owned over a period of seventeen years while giving me zero problems is enough to go a long way toward convincing me. :)
For the record, my parents have also owned several Fords since I was born. One lasted sixteen years (a 1974 or '76 LTD station wagon), one lasted fifteen years (a 1980 Crown Victoria sedan), two lasted eight years (a pair of 1988 Mercury Topazes), and one is still going strong after ten years and 180,000 miles (a 1996 Mustang).
Just pointing out that not ALL Fords suck -- not saying that all Fords rule. :) - Marmot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
IIRC, the Ford Mondeo is basically the same car as the Ford Contour, the Mercury Mystique, and the 99 - 02 Mercury Cougar.
Having previously owned a Cougar, I can say the Mondeo platform was nice and solid to drive--it had great handling and very good road feel. It was somewhat underpowered at the low end, but I hear the Contour SVT was quite peppy. The general platform itself is awesome. Much better IMHO than the Taurus / Sable (complete with dial-a-turn power steering assist and vague road feel).
I think the North American sales for the Contour and Mystique were somewhat underwhelming, especially compared to the larger Taurus / Sable, but nevertheless there were quite a few on the roads down here. Probably all rentals. - dslartoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1abagchee:
Timing belt replacement was NOT in "the first two years". The car was a 1979 model and I bought it in 1989. In 1991 the timing chain (not belt) had to be replaced. That's twelve years after the car was made which is not, I submit, unreasonable.
As far as "statistically significant", I'm well aware that I'm a small sample size -- but even so, three different cars manufactured from 1979 to 1998 and owned over a period of sixteen years with almost no trouble is a pretty decent sample to convince ME. :)
For the record, my parents have also owned several Fords since I was born. One lasted sixteen years (a 1974 LTD station wagon), one lasted twelve years (a 1980 Crown Victoria sedan), and one is still going strong in its tenth year (a 1996 Mustang).
Just pointing out that Fords don't ALWAYS suck. :) - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe it's the stunt car and not the actual car.
- starquake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hehe well look at this one:
http://www.anglerstimes.co.uk/images/mondeo.jpg - SupaFupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1James Bond drove a Ford Thunderbird in Die Another Day. The most recent James Bond movie.
- N3wtR0ckn13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone know what happeneds to the craignotbond.com site . you know btw....another studio made this film as an unofficial bond movie. it flunked...just like this ford.
- abagchee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brilliant! YOUR cars didn't have problems (even though a timing belt replacement in the first two years?!) in your Fords, so they are reliable? That's statistically significant sampling - dslartoo's garage. While Ford has improved its reliability, forced by the Japanese, but it still lags Japanese manufacturers by a healthy margin.
I have to agree though that Bond belongs in a Aston Martin V12 Vanquish even though those cars are a POS. But he's Bond - could care less about reliability when he has Q to fix all problems. Even Honda (http://www.rsportscars.com/foto/03/hondahsc03_01.jpg) will be better than a Ford!! - JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Big ***** deal. He still gets his Aston in the end.
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no it's not - this is the mondeo - though obviously not in estate form
http://www.mi6.co.uk/news/index.php?itemid=4138 - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mecole21; You like Pierce Brosnan? Fair enough, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I can't say it's one I agree with.
I always found Brosnan's Bond to be a superficial lady-charmer. Yeah, he was slick, but so two-dimensional and boring to watch. I know Bond isn't meant to be a fully-rounded human being, but there has to be something there. Connery aside, Timothy Dalton managed it in "The Living Daylights" (one of the best post-Connery Bonds, though "License to Kill" was too hard-edged and un-Bondish for me). Roger Moore wasn't really trying to copy Connery, so I like him fine on his own terms.
But Brosnan? Never took to him. To be fair, he's complained about being given some cheesey lines, but still.... someone called him a "Hollywood Bond", and that about sums it up for me. I'm glad they claim to have learned from their mistakes on "Die Another Day" though; that was appalling, and we can't blame that one on Pierce Brosnan. - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Marmot; According to Wikipedia, "the only external items the Mondeo shared with the Contour were the windscreen, front windows, front mirrors and door handles."
OTOH, the article is slightly self-contradictory, since it gives "Ford Contour" as a pseudonym for "Mondeo". - wundie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Booooo!
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*Yawn . . .*
- Marmot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@noGoodNamesLeft
Externally, the Contour and Mondeo share practically no parts. The underlying platform is shared though (chassis, drivetrain, etc). - ripcrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, it looks like a pretty cool car. It's got front and back gull-wing doors for crying out loud. That makes it similar to the car that was driven in one of the early movies. Maybe You Only Live Twice?
