- asujon, on 04/17/2009, -15/+117Looks like they figured out they could make twice as much money this way.
- MindTrigger, on 04/18/2009, -0/+85I personally don't give a flying ***** as long as the movies are of the same caliber as LotR. No one else can make an epic flick these days it would seem.
- boogieordie, on 04/18/2009, -0/+45Why would you want to see a Tolkien movie not based on something written by Tolkien? Very little happens between The Hobbit and LOTR. That they're not going to try to just make stuff up on their own is the best news I've heard all week.
- zeebo, on 04/18/2009, -0/+42For all the whining from the RIAA and MPAA about the poor suffering artists and actors, they sure seem to do a piss poor job of paying them.
- itc518, on 04/17/2009, -2/+43I am definitely looking forward to these movies. So far what peter jackson has done with the others has been amazing.
- ConcernedCanuck, on 04/18/2009, -0/+36on a related note:
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_accounting
"Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, and his studio Wingnut Films, brought a lawsuit against New Line Cinema after "an audit... on part of the income of The Fellowship of the Ring." Jackson stated this is regarding "certain accounting practices," which may be a reference to Hollywood accounting. In response, New Line stated that their rights to a film of The Hobbit were time-limited, and since Jackson would not work with them again until the suit was settled, he would not be asked to direct The Hobbit, as had been anticipated. Fifteen actors are suing New Line Cinema claiming that they have never received their 5% of revenue from merchandise sold in relation to the movie, which contains their likeness. Similarly, the Tolkien estate has sued New Line, claiming that while their contract entitled them to 7.5% of the gross receipts, the film studio has refused to pay them any share of the $6 billion hit."
I didn't think they would make it after the evil way they handled the Trilogy - ethanator1088, on 04/17/2009, -2/+30This is so awesome. That was my favorite book!
- NSResponder, on 04/18/2009, -1/+28" Very little happens between The Hobbit and LOTR."
Very little happens in the Shire. Plenty is going on in the rest of middle earth. That's the period where Sauron returns to Mordor and starts to threaten Gondor again.
-jcr - Jimbob200, on 04/18/2009, -4/+27Please God, if there was ever a period in film making history where the SILMARILLION was a possibility, this is it. Weta, Jackson, Del Toro, epic CGI capabilities....PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!!
- DaigojiGai, on 04/17/2009, -2/+19Had to bury your comment man, I am sorry, but the care P.J. has brought to the JRR's works deserves to be commended and praised. Furthermore Del Toro is a fantastic director and visionary that will fit perfectly with the look and feel PJ brought to his interpretation of LOTR.
The Hobbit is a meaty adventure, and there were cries of foul over some "fan favorite" moments that were removed from Jackson's LOTR (e.g. Tom Bombadil showing he was not affected by the one ring) - the fact they are doing TWO movies ensures all those fan favorite moments return - smaug, riddles in the dark, the encounter with the trolls, etc.
Attempts at unwarranted cynicism to obtain brownie points just make you look toolish. - DaigojiGai, on 04/17/2009, -0/+17Mine as well, LOTR was great but there is truly something (I can't put my finger on it) that made it more special... I mean Smaug, the Bilbo's Trolls encounter (which we do get to see the aftermath of in the extended ver of LOTR), the fellowship of dwarves, RIDDLES IN THE DARK!
I mean, CROM - great isht! - AimlessAbyss, on 04/18/2009, -0/+16Watch the first Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. They are totally different and much better.
- HimThatSpeaks, on 04/18/2009, -1/+16Would you prefer they chop and hack it so it can fit into one. I say make it into five for all I care... just LoTR quality.
- Gemfinder, on 04/18/2009, -0/+14According to the legendry, it was a quiet period with no adventuring. Remember that nobody in Hobbiton knew about Bilbo's ring.
Myself, I can't wait to see the Battle Of Five Armies! - ViscidGobs, on 04/18/2009, -0/+13It would be nice to see Bilbo gardening.
- NSResponder, on 04/18/2009, -2/+15The Silmarillion should probably be four or five films. There's a lot to cover there. Beren and Luthien alone would make a three-hour movie.
-jcr - Kronos6948, on 04/18/2009, -2/+14Where there's a whip, there's a way.
- peters1023, on 04/18/2009, -2/+13No author or set of books are as deserving.
- mrhedges, on 04/18/2009, -0/+11I'd be happy with a movie based on Turin. That story has EVERYTHING. Betrayal, dragons, incest...
- mithrasinvictus, on 04/18/2009, -1/+10There's no need to chop the hobbit, it's a lot shorter and lighter than the lord of the rings.
- crowbar77, on 04/18/2009, -0/+8Hellboy 2 wasn't bad either, just the writing was kind of cheesy. Visually it was in a league of its own.
- bpeacock22, on 04/18/2009, -0/+8The Silmarillion would only work as a mini-series.
- SaladCactusKing, on 04/18/2009, -2/+10If they're not doing a time bridge between the two movie series, then this only needs to be one movie. Let's be honest.
- BrownieMix, on 04/18/2009, -3/+11I've read The Hobbit, and I don't really think it should span over two movies. He doesn't have to adapt every single detail.
- asgardshill, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7Lesson learned: Ask for AND GET a cut of the gross, not the net. David Prowse learned that lesson the hard way with the Star Wars trilogy.
- bobsbones, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7I am uncertain about Del Toro's style too, regarding this project , but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I did love Labyrinyth.
- ciano, on 04/18/2009, -1/+8I'm glad they're letting Tolkien's mythology remain his and not filling in the gaps with theirs. Not that I'm not excited to see how they'll amend and expand what happened in and during The Hobbit, I'm just glad it'll be pieces of an existing story they'll be creating and not a new story entirely.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7They changed quite a bit and left out huge chunks, man.
- AimlessAbyss, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6It's probably true that Jackson and Del Toro want to make more money by shooting 2 movies, but the Hobbit is pretty detailed and they should stick to the book as much as they can. I don't enjoy movies when they take entire events from the books out for the film version. Both are masterful directors and they know they must be loyal to Tolkien. Let's hope they don't screw this up!
- starkraving, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6That was actually from "The Return of the King", but I dugg you up because I still laughed.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 04/18/2009, -1/+7> "I just hope they tone down the gay hobbit love..."
You've never read The Hobbit, have you? - terminal157, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6The man doesn't owe you anything, jackass. He'll direct what he wants to direct.
- GroundIsSound, on 04/17/2009, -2/+8i cannot wait for this movie, well movies i guess
- dn11, on 04/18/2009, -0/+6they were already going to make 2 movies. they figured out they couldn't make one up out of thin air
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+5He did Pan's Labyrinth? Hellboy doesn't hold a candle to that.
- Poochyfud, on 04/18/2009, -0/+5Wonder where they will split it. Any guesses?
Personally I could see it working well with the first movie as the journey to Dale with Bilbo going from hermit to hero and the second movie being all about Lonely Mountain, Smaug and the battle. - RoroCo, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6You guys are predicting Del Toro's "style" on one of his movies. The guy has directed Blade and Hellboy as well. And - like them of not - those stayed pretty true to the original sources. I for one think Del Toro is one of the more unique directors out there that is actually versatile. And don't forget... Jackson's movies before the Lord of the Rings were also a little "off".
All that being said... Making the Hobbit a little dark would actually be pretty cool - clyentnine, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6two movies is acceptable only if they are filmed contiguously, and released no more than 6 months apart
- noumuon, on 04/18/2009, -1/+5"but the care P.J. has brought to the JRR's works deserves to be commended and praised."
sure, but the script writers of two and three deserve to be shot. omissions due to time limitations are one thing, but changing fundamental concepts about people <cough>faramir</cough> and groups of people <cough>elves</cough> is unacceptable. hopefully they're doing this to keep a better interpretation of the book, and not just because of money. of course, this is just my opinion, as i'm a big LOTR fan. - DouglasQ, on 04/18/2009, -2/+6You just hurt film.
- 2Six119, on 09/10/2009, -8/+12Still won't hold a candle to the 70's animated version.
- Gareth321, on 04/18/2009, -3/+7Yea, why the ***** is Del Toro directing this as well? Pan's Labyrinth was spectacular, but he has a distinct impressionist style. This style wouldn't lend well to this type of movie. I sure hope Jackson's got a louder voice.
- splorpdotorg, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4Sean Astin? Why would the actor who played Samwise (Hobbit) play Thorin (Dwarf)?
- neonoodle, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4if by invented you mean stole from anime.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -1/+5Oh man, you'll hate this one, they have the Dwarves going at it in big orgies with Bilbo.
- danc4498, on 04/20/2009, -0/+3Pt. 1: There.
Pt. 2: Back again. - SEN5241, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3A great adventure is waiting for you ahead. Hurry onward Lemmiwinks, for you will soon be dead. The journey before you may be long and filled with woe. But you must escape the gay man's ass, or your tale can't be told.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3He's probably avoiding it deliberately. It might be a dream of his, but I don't think he ever promised it, and chances are he's avoiding doing it because he doesn't think he'd be able to meet his own expectations.
- Aelbric, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Not to mention removing the "Scouring of the Shire" was despicable. That has always bugged me, though I loved the movies. If the whole Arwen plotline had been reduced to what it should have been they could have fit the proper ending in easily.
- wolfing, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3I tried to read the Silmarillion a couple of times. I really tried, but could never reach page 100, it was BORING! (digg me down all you want, but it *is* boring). Someone said it gets better a bit later (that's why I tried the second time) but man, getting there is tough!
