As an atheistic teenager, I would constantly be invited to these things and just sit back and laugh.
As a now-Christian in my 20's, having experienced both sides, I can honestly say that most of the people-types in this movie were the ones that had scared me away or made me laugh at Christianity. I believe that Christ died for my sins on the cross and that He loves me by His grace. I'm glad they are eager to share the gospel, but they're a little scary and too aggressive for my taste. I prefer to love people without interjecting "if you dont believe, you're going to hell". Just love people. - CKelley010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@johnlark
Although I am completely against the views portrayed in this upcoming films, your demand for a ban of this movie is quite possibly just as radical as the movie itself. - SexyGeniusNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Since when does welcoming involve a camp designed to teach you the "truth"? Since when does "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." imply that you should actively tell children what to do? It says let them come not push them along.
Belief is fine but forcing your beliefs on others is wrong, children should be moderately exposed to religion until they are old enough to make up their own minds without being brainwashed.
Finally lets face facts. Watch the second trailer. This isn't about a summer camp this is about a brainwashing camp to train Christian children the way Islamic terrorists are trained the woman who runs the camps says it straight out. - SexyGeniusNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It appears that you don't understand the movie at all. The movie is bringing attention to the victimization of children and doesn't victimize them any more than any other film. I suggest you adopt a simple to remember process for further comments.1 STOP, 2 READ/WATCH/BOTH, 3 THINK, 4 UNDERSTAND, 5 POST if you have trouble with any one step I suggest you save yourself the embarrassment and just not say anything. Good luck with the thinking thing.
- DrexelJere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think that this is an extremely important movie. Just take a look at our commander and chief to see that the power and influence these religious radicals hold is very real.
Although Jesus tought love and understanding, these extremist focus on hate and conversion. Their view that their way is the ONLY way is something the dangerously underminds the American ideal, freedom of religion.
If you every wonder why the middle east constantly has so much turmoil and violence, or why America is currently under attack, its all based on religious extremeist. However, instead of watching these etremist wage war half way around the world, these individuals may one day bring it to your doorstep.
I hope people take note of a film like this.... - Goner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2pledging to the 'christian' flag is divisive and just as odious as pledging to the 'white' flag or anything of the sort. 'One nation, under GOD' was ADDED to the pledge by agenda-driven politicians a while back at a time when religious zealots held enough sway over congress to get it passed. We've all be saying it ever since.
It's a shame that faction stooped to such underhanded tactics to get Bush elected in Florida... We could all be happily enjoying a second term of prosperity, peace and technological advancement under Al Gore..
but no.. The religious criminals won and are out there stealing the money and resources of the middle east and waging holy war on innocent people... Those people are not going to just lay down and take it.. They're going to strap bombs to their children for generations to come. they have nothing else. Of course they'll make war on us -- we attacked them. - flip, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Religion is the greatest binder and blinder of humanity.
The last time that religion held sway in the western world was in the dark ages
The christian based churches rose to power as the roman empire fell and kept civilization from rising again for over 800 years!!!! and it would have been longer if it wasn't for the crusades exposing europeans to the reservoir of knowledge in the islamic middle east. coupled with those that challenged church dogma with "reason" and scientific findings.
Now they want to send us back in time into a place where people were burned at the stake
and religious myth ruled millions in poverty!
This is the greatest danger our nation may ever face our freedom is threatened by smiling churchgoers that blindly follow radical christians.
Johnlark, who's exploiting children? It's the adults that are filling their heads with the idea of a religious war. NOT THE FILM THAT EXPOSES IT! - GordyMac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm a Christian, but this is rediculous. I'm telling you they're giving Biblical Christians a bad wrap.

- mortypoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I find it very scary.
In ten to fifteen years from now we will be witnessing a Christian Jihad like nothing our country could ever imagine. They are not even pledging alliance to the American flag...they are Christian jihadists in the making.
Brainwashing young Americans to divide this country between those who claim to love Jesus and those who do not is child abuse in it's purest form. Teaching children to prepare for war in our country against other Americans is a very dangerous thing.
The mere question being asked to these children - "are you willing to die for Jesus?" can only lead to disaster in years to come. - jasper976, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thankfully most christians, even evangelicals are not like this... seriously. not to say I haven't met a few. i'm not sure if this is the case with most of the christian extremists, but those I've met had been terrible kids (drugs, sex, violence) and have been reborn. it's like they need to go to the extreme to make up for their ***** past? i dunno. this movie looks interesting though, can't wait to see it.
- KlayBorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How does some flag represent the "Christian nation"? Who created this flag? And if anything, shoulding a "nation under god" be a nation that has more to do with Christianity than America?
- gangofone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The important message of the film:
"
There's only 2 types of people in the world.
1. The people who think and act and vote as we do, ie the Good people
2. The enemy.
By the way... which are you?
"
Please see the film and become aware and informed about what's going on in this country and the intellectual and political path we are being taken down.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came... - JimSartor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a former Christian, I hate it when my past comes back and punches me right in the balls. I feel so spooky right now it hurts.
The most amazing thing is that I believe this movie will justify BOTH sides.
There will be Christians who will feel proud watching this movie . . . - cmmart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I saw this film recently. I left the film truly dismayed and saddened for these children and our country.
- KlayBorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even though, as the past has shown, extremists (even in chrisitanity) can lead to some devistating results, such as the KKK or even the Nazi's. They bend and twist the words of the bible and interpret in terrible ways which can lead to the death of many innocent people. These are extreme examples, but there are extremists in all religions.
- tallskinnykiwi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i will watch the movie when it comes to town, but i am sure i will be cringing all the way through. i hope it will give some slack to jesus followers who dont two the republican right wing line - and there are many of them
- upsidedowncake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you, Heidi and Rachel for giving us substantial doses of reality. Also loved the film website.
To all the rest of the world: this film is pretty objective, so if you notice anything scary or unfair, respeconize that *****!
(plan accordingly) - Chaoticspyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow
- Bonded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Jesus Christ was very explicit about teaching children to know the Lord.
"Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
Jesus camp appears to me as just a way to make outreach more modern. Camps are very much in style right now (space camp, baseball camp, etc). Many churches now look more like a YMCA and the sanctuaries look like rock concert halls. Church is merely keeping up with the times. - franktjmackey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Scary! I can't wait to see if there is a scene where they break out the purple Kool-aid. Awww, Jim Jones would be so proud.
- badara, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0As a Muslim struggling with fundamentalists in my own country I can tell you this: that's how Muslim fundamentalists are taught. Actually they are taught in a more gently way, no abuse involved. The condemned actions of the few Muslim fundamentalists' are born out of oppression and desperation, but what's depicted in this movie is much more dangerous because these kids will one day run the most powerful nation in the world and their misguided convictions and intolerance towards others will make them do horrible deeds. For an example of this just look in the white house.
The world has gone through several revolutions in succession: the religious revolution, the agricultural revolution, the industrial revolution and we are now living in the information revolution. Different regions of the world are stuck in different places along that path. The people in this movie are trying to go full circle and return to the religious revolution. That's something totally incomprehensible to me, someone who lives in a region that didn't reach the information revolution yet.
Religion should always stay in the home and always be a personal matter. Outside that context it becomes "Opium of the people" and “The root of all evil”

- shadsluiter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Are we Christians taking a page out of the Muslim terrorist "playbook"? I certainly had Christian training, but it was meant to lead me to Christ in relation to my problem of sin against God, not in relation to the operatives of the religious right in the political wing.

- anabaptist, on 01/06/2008, -0/+0I just saw the doc "Jesus Camp" and am astonished at the blatant idolatry of these "evangelicals" such as seen in the Jesus Camp...i don't mean the children...i mean the adults who bring a cardboard cutout of George Bush and stand it up before the altar for the children to worship. it is deeply ingrained in me from my early days in christian culture that commandment that states "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" nor shall we prepare "graven images" and put them up to worship. what is the matter with these people? i will tell you my gut opinion...the woman leading the camp, in my opinion, is a demon. Not "like" a demon, but is, in fact a demon. case in point: the mumbo jumbo babble she encourages as some kind of "god talk"...this is pure mockery and vulgarization of the true spirituality of speaking in tongues (i had a great aunt who did so, not because she chose to or decided to but because it was her gift), this jesus camp "minister" vulgarizes the gift by assuming she can just pretend and get every one else to pretend. but then, what would you expect from a demon? respect? nah! furthermore, she is, in my opinion, the kind of hippocrite Jesus himself spoke of in his ministry, when asked, teacher how should we pray, he answered, in private, in secrecy, NOT like the hippocrites who blatt forth and trumpet their "prayers" and so-called piety on the street corneres...in my opinion, this "jesus camp" way is fostering that kind of loud, vulgar hippocrisy. More hippocrisy in critizing people who aren't in the Jesus Camp, for being fat and lazy and sitting around...well, one wonders, how such a fervent activist as this could have remained as fat and corpulent as she is. This doc also gave me a feeling of nausea watching the adult camp leaders abuse children; the leader even took a video of the children's suffering home to her sparse and lonely apartment to "get off" on watching them suffer in fear of not conforming and being singled out as sinners. how much different is this from other adults who get their rocks off watching videos of children being abused and molested in other ways. in my opinion, the Jesus camp method is a form of child abuse and molestation...spiritual abuse and molestation. So, to sum up, in my opinion, the philosophy and practice put forward in the "jesus camp" is blasphemous, idolatrous, abusive, molesting demonology.
- gibsonmastiffs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Chill Out People , understand that these types of Christian Jesus camps have been going on for decades and decades and have not created a Christian Jihad; Many of you who posted are taking what you saw way to seriously. These kids will grow into productive citizens that love God and love people and worse case scenario speak out against abortion, speak out against cheating on your spouse and other morality topics but everyone has a right to have an opinion and speak out.
- SanFranciscoGal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I am one of those liberals that Becky claims will be shaking in my boots after seeing the movie.
To Becky:
Well, Becky, I am not shaking at all. Instead, my heart goes out to the kids who hear the words words murder and abortion spoken regularly. My heart goes out to kids who are brought up to feel suspicious and paranoid of people who may not have the exact same beliefs as them. My heart goes out to children who are outsiders to the rest of the world.
Becky, I am not shaking in my boots. I teach my child about love. I teach my child empathy and compassion. I teach my child about caring for the earth so it will be a good place when he grows old. I teach my child to love humanity. I teach tolerance. My child will love your children. But, are your children able to reciprocate?
Peace on Earth!
A San Francisco Gal - igwt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1America's mental health is worrisome. This is what our society needs ... AN INTENSIVE BRAIN WASH.
- rkerr99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Little kids have been pledging allegiance to the Christian flag at vacation Bible schools since the beginning of the century, and I can't think of one of them who ever became a "Christian Jihadist." That's just ludicrous. It's hot-headed remarks like that that start conflicts and begin the process of shutting down civil liberties.
- johnlark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2flip - I don't know what got up yours but my point was just that, that children here are victimized and it's wrong. Please read my comments without your own bias, this movie bad, I say that!
As for religion, consider this, more people in history have died as a result of religion over anything else. - flip, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3cont.
with reason and scientific findings.
This is the greatest threat to the very freedom that this nation has ever encountered
and it's being done with smiling faces and a "army" of brainwashed church followers.
Johnlark, exploiting children? who are you talking about? If anything it's the ADULTS that fill these poor kids heads up with so much religious nonsense and teach them blind hatred and intolerance... making children ready for war! Please GET YOUR HEAD ON STRAIGHT!!!
the victims here are the kids, the people responsible are the adults that run these brainwashing camps and their brainwashed parents. NOT THE FILMMAKERS THAT EXPOSE THEM WITHOUT BIAS!!! get your head on straight and WAKE UP! - goodgrief86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm not sure what concerns me more: the kids in the movie or some of the posts I have read here. I wonder what effect zeroing in on "Christian extremists" will have on that people group and on those who disagree with them. That's not even to mention what desired effect, if any, the makers of this movie had in mind.
First off, I'm disturbed by some of the harshness I've encountered on this site. A few misspellings are admissible, but let's at least learn to communicate in a way that's clear and constructive. It's almost like sneaking up behind someone and pulling their pants down instead of looking them in the face, giving them the time of day, and then responding. Also, a caveat to myself, anyone posting here and those effected by this documentary: the very things you are declaring as truth may one day be the things you look back on in disgust and regret. Saint Augustine spoke volumes when he said, "Deceived with promises of certainty, with childish error and rashness I had mindlessly repeated many uncertain things as if they were certain." We are so prone to view everything through the glasses of our own experiences, prejudices and to repeat religiously(no pun intended) what we have been taught or have read, but what's really goin' on here?
Are we really in imminent danger of a Christian Jihad happening here in the US? I think not. One reason is that the groups targeted by Jesus Camp are by no means the religious majority. If you were paying attention, you probably noted that the lady conducting the seminar was a Pentecostal. One thing that left me a little disappointed, and someone mentioned this earlier, is that all Evangelical Christians were grouped together with the Pentecostal/Charismatic views that this lady and her cohorts portrayed. Nothing could be further from the truth. Pentecostals and Charismatics are not even the majority in Christian circles (although laws prohibit a religious census, this is probably a good estimate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States#Religious_affiliation) I think most Christian parents have enough trouble getting their kids to come to church, much less to go to a prayer seminar or Bible camp.
I believe this little group of homeschoolin', tongues-prayin', Christian T-shirt wearin', tract-wielding kids is more in danger of being persecuted than we are of being overtaken by them. Yes, it's true that Evangelical Christians make up, statistically, the majority in this country, but non-denominational Churches seem to be the fastest-growing. Let's be careful not to demonize the parents and teachers that are attempting to raise these kids according to their convictions. Rather, if you are a believer, pray for them. That God might open their hearts and eyes to the truth of His word, not the agenda being marketed by politicians.
Yes, it's true that Jesus is powerful, but no He didn't use his power for political leverage or selfish gain. He wasn't a Republican, white or a part of the bourgeoisie. He was poor. He told his disciples to put their swords away as he willingly preferred unjust death over just victory. He built a kingdom that is not of this world but made up of people from every tribe, tongue and nation. This movie also disturbed me because of the way that lady and her buddies made Christianity look like it was the most American thing ever. America was not founded on Christian values. Benjamin Franklin tore out the parts of his Bible he didn't like. It was founded on a thought that if I don't like what you're doing, I can leave and go somewhere else with my friends. Democracy will never be the kind of Government Christ came to create. Let's not ignore what's going on in our country, but, as Christians, let's have a view of God's kingdom that looks beyond the United States. We have Family in every continent. People who need to be fed, widows and fatherless children are always around us at every turn. Are we so in love with political control that we know of no other way to affect change in the world around us?
I appreciate everyone posting here. It's good to know that people care about this, even if they disagree with me.
in love,
j
- alexkay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This movie is just wrong.
- blueheaven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I come from a similar background as yours. And I can say that I am embarrassed for Christians, bec. this movie seems to make blanket, extreme statements about "evangelicals". I pity those who shun / label Christians without getting to know them first. This movie is so extreme that obviously it SHOULD be taken lightly. Don't let these kind of Christians make you even the least bit nervous about America's future.
- mrbillabong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0You do not understand that it's not about saving them from hell. Would you still praise the King if you were going to hell? It's not about us or humanity. It's about serving God. Do you expect people to not laugh at you also. They hated Jesus, would you except them not to hate you if you are trying to bring glory to His name and become more like him?
- johnlark, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The idea of this movie is sick. I can 100% respect just about anyone's viewpoint but you NEVER target children as a means of getting your point across, even the worst of criminals know that's off limits and these people do just that and package it as religion. There are very few movies that should be banned publicly as everyone is entitled to freedom of speech but when those freedoms target innocent children, that's cross a line you should NEVER cross. SICK!
- johnlark, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1While I am in total disbelief that anyone would do such a thing to children and while I know that any pr is good pr, I am digging this story just on the hope that the outcry by anyone with a mind will recognize this as pure child exploitation and write anyone and everyone who will listen to get this movie and everyone associated with it banned for life from ever making another movie.
