- TGMD, on 02/22/2008, -4/+72Stop reinventing the wheel..
Reinvent something else.... like the star wars prequels.. - weeeeeeee, on 02/22/2008, -1/+56*****. There is *no way* us Americans can make this movie any better. Please just leave it alone.
- WiseWeasel, on 02/22/2008, -5/+58Are you serious? How could *Warner Brothers* NOT screw this up? Warner Bros is incapable of doing philosophical and edgy, it will just be a formula action flick. This is going to suck major donkey balls.
- Crizack, on 02/22/2008, -2/+55It might take place in "New Manhattan". Strike one.
- ZephyrNinety, on 02/22/2008, -0/+44Starring Keanu Reeves, Samuel Jackson, and Reese Witherspoon!
- plaunie, on 02/22/2008, -3/+40The Matrix 2 and 3...
- gypsi, on 02/22/2008, -4/+40hollywood? it's going to suck
- kiiwii, on 02/22/2008, -3/+38I'm looking forward to it, but I wonder what the intention is behind this? One of the main points of animation is that you can make things happen that can't happen in real life.
I know that with special effects they can do anything, I just wonder whether this is actually needed. At least it's a new adaptation and not a word for word recreation. Like the above poster said, I hope they don't screw it up... - Jenadae, on 02/22/2008, -0/+33I swear if they ***** this up ill have to hurt somebody...
- zengonzo, on 02/22/2008, -0/+28You can't drop Japan from the movie.
A big part of the stylistic aesthetic is the backdrop of Japan and its society. A huge part of the theme is the cultural impact of The Bomb on Japan.
It can't just be about how cool Kaneda's bike is. (Though it is very cool.) - TurdFaceManLove, on 02/22/2008, -0/+27Hmmm, I'm not sure if I have too much faith in this project. The change from Neo-Tokyo to New Manhattan, first-time director, first-time screenwriter, and rushing production to release in 2009... it's not looking good.
- typicalusername, on 02/22/2008, -1/+26"Get this motha' ***** dude, off my motha *****' SOL!"
- johnsonjoeb, on 02/22/2008, -6/+31What?! No Kanye West?
- ronaldmonster, on 02/22/2008, -0/+25This won't end well.
- zengonzo, on 02/22/2008, -0/+22And I hate to be so fatalistic about it .. But then maybe it just shouldn't happen. Until people are ready for it. What often happens when you take a niche interest and try to rearrange it to suit a general audience is that nobody ends up liking it and it fails.
- smackhero, on 02/22/2008, -1/+23the entire premise of the Akira project is that is arose out of post-WW III japan--which was really an allusion to post-WW II japan. much of the film's plot and philosophical undertones is inextricably tied to japanese history and japanese culture. i really don't see how it could be done correctly without having the film being set in japan.
anyways, most great works of art come from the margins instead of the mainstream. mainstream culture's appropriation of fringe artistic expressions simply cheapens and corrupts those original artistic works. there's already plenty of films constantly being made that panders to mainstream tastes, but if every single film made is being custom tailored to suit the lowest common denominator, then good films will never see the light of day.
personally, i think it's more important to make good films than commercially successful ones. and films with wide mainstream appeal are rarely any good, just as truly great films are rarely blockbusters or huge commercial successes. - zeroroth, on 02/22/2008, -0/+18Also, it's got a first time screen writer and first time feature length director... At least Katsuhiro is the Executive Producer...
- merdiesel, on 02/22/2008, -1/+19I've been waiting a long time for this live-action remake...
now that its actually happening, I'm not so sure I want anyone messing with this masterpiece. - skycriesx, on 02/22/2008, -1/+17New manhattan? wtf? I can't believe they are going to butcher this film :(
- reuscel, on 02/22/2008, -1/+16This is not good news at all. There are some works of art you just don't ***** with. This is one of them.
- dyreschlock, on 02/22/2008, -1/+16They're already doing Speed Racer. ^_^
- diskit, on 02/22/2008, -0/+14Two first timers?
Well, *****. - BoneheadFarker, on 02/22/2008, -0/+14I don't care if they screw it up, as long as they sign a deal to market the motorbikes...
- copypasterepeat, on 02/22/2008, -4/+18The Matrix?
- HydrogenY, on 02/22/2008, -2/+15I don't want this film to happen. It's like remaking King Kong with CGI instead of plastercine or Charlie and the Chocolate factory with non freaky oompa-lumpas. It just seems wrong. Maybe if they got Eric-the-Midget to play the creepy wheelchair kid I might be turned around on it...
- depro9, on 02/22/2008, -3/+16***** YOU HOLLYWOOD! STOP, JUST ***** STOP OK?
- KyjL, on 02/22/2008, -0/+13There was no 3D. Every single frame was hand-drawn from scratch. Nothing was copied.
- br0wnstar, on 02/22/2008, -0/+13Uh.... how the hell are they going to do that ending?
- norman619, on 02/22/2008, -1/+13Why because he pays attention to the past attempts by Hollywood to do this with other films?
- outsidethinkbox, on 02/22/2008, -0/+12They're not. They're going to do the Hollywood ending.
- dracflamloc, on 02/22/2008, -2/+14That and there was the whole 20-minute underground rave scene
- bagboyrebel, on 02/22/2008, -0/+12you know, you are just coming off as an elitist. There is nothing wrong with the anime, it was an amazing movie.
- deaconyermouf, on 02/22/2008, -0/+11sigh
- benroy, on 02/22/2008, -5/+15Why?
- martinj88, on 02/22/2008, -0/+10I'm thinking they are gonna go the way of Sin City and 300, almost everything CG except the actors and a few props and with a first time feature director, first time screenwriter and about a year to make it, it's not looking too good.
But I'm with you, hope they don't screw it up........ - typicalusername, on 02/22/2008, -4/+14Well, I'm a big fan of old skool Anime. Let's be honest though, you throw the word "Japan" out there and it has NO chance of becoming Mainstream. Which Warner Bros is in it for the $ and large distribution. Let's be honest, you're gonna get changes to have it appeal to an American audience. As much as we love the original, it's not for everyone.
- DollaDollaBill, on 02/22/2008, -1/+11I'd say that is a perfect example.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+9Well, there is that whole, you know, amazing story and everything.
I guess the 3 new Star Wars movies would have been awesome if they were 2D mixed with 3D, right? - wedges, on 02/22/2008, -0/+9they ruined the movie, you say?
- Frostman3D, on 02/22/2008, -1/+10I love Akira. It's by far my favorite Anime. I hope the film has the same spirit as the 1988 version.
- anthaneezy, on 02/22/2008, -1/+9I've read the graphic novel series and watched the movie. Being the visual-oriented person, the movie rocked. So much. I'm thinking your idea of a good movie is Terminator and Aliens. Something where you don't do much thinking, and just watch the flashy explosions.
- bagboyrebel, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8conversly
live-action != worse
live-action == different perspective - bugsy187, on 02/22/2008, -1/+9The original was great, in part, because it was so beautifully animated. I don't know why they need to make it live action. Also, Hollywood loves to oversimplify scripts. I really hope they don't use Timmy from South Park as their model for the target audience.
- BlueSkyfish, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7Ugh, this is going to be like the American remake of Godzilla, isn't it?
- mediaphile, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7I remember there being a lot of criticism of the Matrix movies, but none of it was about how complicated people found the plot to be. In fact, it's the exact opposite. There was too much style and not enough substance.
I always love hearing the "you just aren't smart enough to understand" argument, because essentially you're dismissing any argument anyone can make to the contrary. Unless of course someone calls you out on it. - norman619, on 02/22/2008, -4/+11Those were due to the law of sequals not WB.
