Iron-Man and GTA IV Team up to Crush a Modern Marketing Myth
voltagecreative.com — Last year film execs blamed Halo 3 for lower than expected Box Office. It sounds like a good excuse, but RUH-ROH! A little movie called Iron Man debuted this weekend and brought in ~$104 million. GTA's franchise is one of the few that is actually bigger than Halo ’s. If you make good movies you don’t have to come up with silly, back-pedaling excuses

- ssn697, on 05/06/2008, -3/+190My son was more than happy to stop his GTA IV playing to go see Iron Man.The Blame Game fails...
- WMeredith, on 05/06/2008, -0/+11It usually does.
- mvanhorn, on 05/06/2008, -3/+96My fav comment on the "stay for after the credits" article yesterday was someone saying "I had no time to wait around for the credits, had to return to GTA!!"
- freshyill, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Then that guy missed something aweseome.
- antdude, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4You only need a few hours to spare to watch the movie especially if the theater is near by.
- banthis, on 05/06/2008, -15/+2Too bad the fighting in IronMan were too short :-(
- Sliperyfish, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Yeah, i bought GTAIV on launch day and had the time and interest to go watch Ironman. Who's going to play the game around the clock?
- ByrcheWroot, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2I also bought the game and saw the movie. /thumbs up
- joper90, on 05/06/2008, -9/+2how old is your son? i want to decide if you are a bad parent or not?

- Detritus, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4How old are you, Joper? Your post is the nonsense of a child.
- ssn697, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5LOL. I think people misinterpreted your comment. He is 19, but I would let him play GTA IV if he were younger. The day my kid can't distinguish between animated computer violence and the real world is the day I have a bigger problem than letting him play video games.
- Beylan, on 05/06/2008, -1/+87Now they will have to fall back to their primary excuse when they come out with a multi-million dollar flop: PIRACY! After all, if they spent that much money on it, it has to be good. The possibility of it being a sucky movie than no one wants to see (or at least wait for it on DVD) can't be the reason.
- sanman, on 05/06/2008, -16/+1Well, you have to admit, back when Spiderman came out with its record opening, there was no such thing as bittorrent. So the fact that Iron Man has done as well as it has, makes it even more spectacular.
Anyhow, I just came back from watching it for the second time, and it was worth it, because there's a whole lot going on in the scenes that really grab you when you see it again. Like that scene with Stark screaming out at Yensin, who bravely goes running off. As the view switches back to Stark's face, the music is pitch-perfect at that moment, so that you really feel the emotion as you see him staring at the progress bar. That was a good Boromir style moment for Yensin.- choopie911, on 05/06/2008, -1/+17Are you ***** kidding? You think piracy started after 2002? For one, bittorrent itself started in 2001, and P2P programs and such have been around for ages. Christ man get in touch with reality.
- sanman, on 05/06/2008, -11/+2Oh come on, there's no way that Bittorrent was as meaningfully widespread at that time as it is today. Back then it was only dabblers using it. Today there is far more piracy than there was back then, so I would factor that in Iron Man's favour, when it comes to earnings results.
Anyway, I'm glad I saw it again for a second time.- theaceoffire, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5No, I never heard of Napster.
- Orion682, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Hahahahahahah. AHAHAHAHAHAHA
Limewire
Napster
Kazaa
eDonkey
UseNet
FTP Servers
Need I go on?
Filesharing has been around since the dawn of the internet. And before the internet, people used to make a physical copy and ***** MAIL IT. The fact is that the vast majority of piracy is done by people who would not/could not spend the money on the product anyway, so although it does deprive those who's intellectual property is violated with some income, the actual loss is a minuscule percentage of the total P2P propagation of their file.
The notion that piracy somehow costs that millions per movie is absurd. I mean, with all the positive reviews and reactions, who the ***** would want to watch a cammed version where you can barely see half the special effects and the image is all washed out?
People are typically more than willing to spend money on a product or service that they know will be good. - jonshipman, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Were you downloading FULL length movies back in 2001 on your 40GB harddrives over 1.5MBPS broadband?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ho_Yinsen - yunus, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2You really think that someone who is so excited about Spiderman or Ironman that they download it before its released is not going to be standing in line at midnight opening night to watch it?

- ilikechaitea, on 05/06/2008, -0/+7totally dude....surely this is clear evidence that :
1. Box office takings aren't necessarily going down
2. When they do go down, it isn't because people are pirating, its because the movie is so mediocre that no-one will pay to watch it.
bottom line is - put some time, effort, and thought into a film, and we'll pay for it - BevansDesign, on 05/06/2008, -0/+16I spent $9.50 to see Iron Man last weekend. A large popcorn cost $4.50. I don't even know what the drinks and candy cost.
Yea, piracy and videogames are killing Hollywood.- Kallius, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8I spent $10.95 to see Iron Man and was "treated" to three long commercials (not movie trailers) right when the movie was supposed to start. When I watched "Be Kind, Rewind", I paid the same price for NINE long commercials (Telus, Coke, those asinine Milk commercials, etc.). So the movie distributors say, "Hmm, higher ticket prices, more commercials that people are forced to sit through...how can this winning combination NOT make us money?"
- Burn, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3That's why I always turn up at the cinema at least 10 minutes after the 'starting' time, which is usually just in time for one or two more trailers before the movie /actually/ starts.
- asforme, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4That usually only works if you're sitting by yourself.
- Burn, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Or you get your friends to save you a seat ;).

- asforme, on 05/06/2008, -0/+7I haven't seen it yet because of what it would cost me to see a movie. After finding a babysitter, paying for gas to get to a theater showing it (small town), movie and snacks it's a $50-$75 event. I personally wish movie theaters would just go extinct and they'd just release the movie immediately and I can watch it comfortably in my own home.
- freshyill, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Sounds like you got the deal of the century on both the popcorn and the tickets!

- snoopduggydugg, on 05/06/2008, -30/+2Yeah, and seriously, I'm sure tons of people were like, "WTF is Iron Man?" The fact that it wasn't close to Spider Mans first weekend take didn't surprise me, because everyone knows Spidey. I thought IM was an excellent film, and I'm really interested to see what direction they may take it in (because you know, aside from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, almost every comic book movie has at least one sequel).
- WMeredith, on 05/06/2008, -0/+43Spiderman took in $114 million, I wouldn't exactly call $104 million, "not even close."
- sovietninja, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1What makes me sad is that somewhere out there, some kid and his family can't see this movie becuase of the current economic situation. That $104 million is a testament to how Americans are still willing to go watch overpriced movies when they are good, regardless of our dire economic situation.
- vanebeard, on 05/06/2008, -12/+1Punisher II?

- freshyill, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2You can't deny that Spider-Man has much wider name recognition among the general movie-going public. Frankly, I'm surprised more people didn't avoid Iron Man after they got burned by Spider-Man 3.

- Antimatter3009, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1I know most people think vgchartz is inaccurate, but they do have some estimates: http://vgchartz.com/news/news.php?id=1102 (plus, how much can you trust a guy with a white fro, a 70's mustache, a wii shirt, and, apparently, no friends to take a picture of him?)
- YoctoYotta, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Woah. That's gnarly. Well, I'm a speptic of vgcharts too, but I guess I'll assume he's a cool guy.
- ObamaWins08, on 05/06/2008, -1/+20Heck, even Niko needs a break every now and then... (Well, one that doesn't involve a prostitute...)
- blackbeardtron, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2Or watching the "Republican Space Rangers" cartoon. Hilarious.
- darkein, on 05/06/2008, -6/+20$100 million for Gta IV, That is amazing!
- privatejoeker, on 05/06/2008, -10/+0Not really. Halo 3 made $300 million in 1 week and I bet GTA IV was more anticipated than that.
- MasterGrief, on 05/06/2008, -0/+11You, obviously, have not met the average Halo player. Halo was huge and will continue to be huge, because of the appeal it has to the casual gamer. The REALLY casual gamer. The kind of gamer that we shouldn't even call a gamer--the kind of gamer that only plays Madden when they aren't playing Halo.
- theaceoffire, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Who will argue about the differences between each madden and the nuances it adds to the game.

- chad3405, on 05/06/2008, -0/+10GTA IV made way more than 100 million. The article said that it cost 100 million to make.
- WMeredith, on 05/06/2008, -0/+6GTA IV is expected to gross around $400 million. It cost $100 mil to make.
- graemee, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2$100 million, I say the game makers use the same accountants the movie & TV industry does.
- caffiend, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Do you have the game? Just flip through the manual and look at all the names in the credits. I've never seen anything like it.
- MasterGrief, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I remember when I completed single player on Friday, I let it run through the credits because I wanted to see if they had a secret cutscene or something at the end... And I waited, and waited, and then I waited some more. I, too, have never seen that many credits.
- caffiend, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Do you have the game? Just flip through the manual and look at all the names in the credits. I've never seen anything like it.
- Jonmad17, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2GTA IV had a budget of 100 million. It's expected to make 400 million in one week alone.
- privatejoeker, on 05/06/2008, -10/+0Not really. Halo 3 made $300 million in 1 week and I bet GTA IV was more anticipated than that.
- Qong, on 05/06/2008, -20/+14I hardly think that using the amount of money a movie makes on its opening weekend qualifies it as a "good" movie...
- kds405, on 05/06/2008, -0/+40According to Rotten Tomatoes, it is the best reviewed movie of this year so far.
- Genshinx, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14And I would have to agree.
- baronsmeg, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8true, probably more of an indication of how good the trailer was! I mean buying a ticket and seeing a movie doesn't mean it was good. Oh and Iron Man rocked by the way.
- b3owulf, on 05/06/2008, -0/+29No one said it's good because it made money, the article says it makes money because it's good. See the difference?
- solidus636, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Prime example: Spiderman 3.
- freshyill, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Well combine that with the universally good reviews it's gotten, plus the outstanding fan reaction, and you've got yourself a "good" movie.
- kds405, on 05/06/2008, -0/+40According to Rotten Tomatoes, it is the best reviewed movie of this year so far.
- crowrock, on 05/06/2008, -12/+7I'll admit that I didn't know what Ironman was before I saw it.
It kicked ass though. - purelithium, on 05/06/2008, -0/+48Come on. Heartbreak Kid sucked balls. Halo players aren't the people who would have gone to see Heartbreak Kid on opening weekend, Whereas Iron Man and GTA4 have a nice cross segment, and Guaranteed some put down the game for 2 hours to go watch it. Typical "nothing is my fault" mentality.
- h4mx0r, on 05/06/2008, -1/+36Common Sense and awesome movies: 1

- pgouy, on 05/06/2008, -0/+22And if you stay after the movie credits you'll see Niko shoving a snake down Samuel L Jackson's throat
- centran, on 05/06/2008, -4/+14wait? is that up on the directional pad or the analog stick?
and what the hell do you mean by b a? My controller does not have either b or a. Do you mean blue? then what is a? amber? do you mean red?

Guess I'll close Azureus and go watch this one then....just got to shoot this pidgeon first!- Gizza, on 05/06/2008, -0/+11Well Marvel are their own movie studio now, and this was the first movie they produced. The Hulk is the next one, so hopefully we're gonna start seeing a lot more kick ass marvel movies.
- biffen, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2From what I understand, one of their main goals is to create a world of consistent characters and actors who play them. So, Jackman is Wolverine, Downy is Iron Man, Norton is Hulk, and that remains so across the Marvel Film universe. Robert Downy Jr even has a cameo in the new Hulk, I believe.
- Inohavehalos, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Someone should inform ben stiller on iron mans success.

- Flashman, on 05/06/2008, -4/+3There's a false comparison in this article: Halo 3 and all box office takings on that October weekend, versus GTA 4 and a single movie's opening weekend. What were the receipts for the entire box office, not just Iron Man? Which movies opened on that October weekend and were they as big as Iron Man?
- WMeredith, on 05/06/2008, -1/+0Look up the numbers yourself at RottenTomatoes.com it holds up.

- DavidTTT, on 05/06/2008, -3/+3well gamers have to do something when there GTA4 freezes.might as well go watch lron Man
- Beatmiser, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1 Not just the blame game for video games either. The demographic that Iron Man is aimed at is largely one that is well versed with movie piracy, yet went out in force to see this film thus showing that if you take the time to make something that people want/need to see on a big screen they will do so.
I couldn't imagine seeing Iron Man on my 20" monitor, and I also put my PS3 controller down which was good. It needed a charge anyway. - th3wiz4rd, on 05/06/2008, -14/+2What does the simultaneous release of GTA IV have to do with anything? It's always astonishing when a movie that sucks donkey balls makes $100 million in a weekend.
There. I said it. It sucked.
Bury away.- DavidTTT, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3It cuz the movie and the game our shooting for the same age groups. and if ppl buy gta4 they wont be leaving the house for awhile.Unless it seems something to its same nerdness comes out also
- th3wiz4rd, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Dave, judging your grammar (and complete misunderstanding of my comment), I would guess you're also a fan of Dare Devil, Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, Catwoman, and probably Steel...
- dylio, on 05/06/2008, -0/+4Will do, cap'n party pooper.
- NeoSporin, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2The whole point of it is to prove that the comment about gaming killing Hollywood is completely stupid. When Halo 3 was released, Hollywood blamed it for the horrible sales of the film "Heartbreak Kid".
So when Iron Man and GTA IV get released in the same conditions, both do extremely well, then they really have nothing to say.
Its fine that you didn't enjoy the movie, you're entitled to your opinion. But I am going to take the opinions of the reviewers on this one, sorry pal.
- DavidTTT, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3It cuz the movie and the game our shooting for the same age groups. and if ppl buy gta4 they wont be leaving the house for awhile.Unless it seems something to its same nerdness comes out also
- johnmatias, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2Anyone, no matter who you are, will take 2 hours out of your busy hooker killing, mafia dealing and mayhem causing day to watch this awesomeness. Hell, I might take 4 to see it twice. Those hookers aren't going anywhere.
- PixelMagic, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2They really won't go anywhere if you kill them. :)
- suinmind, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2After a failure, It is MUCH easier to blame the others than just say: " I suck!"
- HCviolence, on 05/06/2008, -0/+12I remember piracy being blamed for the lack of money made for "miss congeniality 2"
Rampant denial FTW. - debuffplx, on 05/06/2008, -9/+3Iron man wasn't really a good movie. It's just another in a series of average films trying to milk money off childhood memories while shaming our favorite marvel characters. They all have the same story. Good Guy gets awesome superbadass power. Good guy fights evil dude with an even more badass power. Good guy wins and gets a girl.
Call me when they start making Dark Horse films.- Neelix, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14Did you and I watch the same movie? Because that description was not Iron Man at all. It went more like:
Genius asshole uses genius to create something badass.
Genius asshole becomes slightly less of an asshole.
Genius asshole fights evil dude who isn't as smart as genius asshole.
Genius asshole wins via his superior intellect.
Genius asshole does not actually get the girl.
Genius asshole gives the middle finger to the United States government because he knows that he's a million times smarter than them.- doubledoh, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Why is Tony Stark an asshole?
- Neelix, on 05/06/2008, -0/+14Did you and I watch the same movie? Because that description was not Iron Man at all. It went more like:
- cambob76, on 05/06/2008, -3/+2For some strange reason, my PS3 locks up several minutes before every Iron Man show time... something fishy going on.
- gametavern, on 05/06/2008, -7/+2What makes you think GTA was bigger than Halo?
- WMeredith, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3GTA IV's release was forecast to be bigger than Halo. It's just as big a franchise if not larger and it's a multi platform release. (Halo3 was just Xbox 360)
- vichussmith, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3I love that they tried to blame any possible failure of Iron Man (which was awesome and I don't think anyone expected it to fail) on GTA IV. It's two different forms of entertainment that you can enjoy at different times.
The "Halo Effect" was bull because the movie it allegedly crushed wasn't all that hot. Simple as that. - MrKaa, on 05/06/2008, -3/+1The problem with this logic is that it assumes that since Iron Man made over $100 mil that GTA didn't somehow steal some of its thunder. Perhaps if GTA didn't come out the same time, Iron Man would have made $200 mil? Maybe it's bull and maybe it's not. But this is hardly a deep analysis.
- DarkStar3333, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Its a basic logic problem that can be very easily explained even for those movie industry executives.
Awesomeness of Halo 3 > Sum of all movies during that period
Awesomeness of Iron Man == GTA4
The first thing I wanted to do after seeing Iron Man was to get back in line and see it again. If hollywood wants to make money then let the writers/producers/directors make movies as they see fit. With so many quality entertainment options available we don't need to head to the movie theater and swallow whatever they regurgitate on the screen week after week. - reb42, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1This isn't a myth - video games and movies compete in the same market segment (entertainment), and GTA IV/Iron Man were aimed at pretty similar demographics to boot. I know a few people who didn't see Iron Man on the opening weekend because they were playing GTA... myself included.
- doubledoh, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1True, but I bet they will go see it eventually because most other summer movies coming out soon are going to suck compared to Iron Man. The obsession Hollywood has with opening weekend numbers is absurd.
- Reptarr, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2I went to see Iron Man twice and it was well worth it. But I admit that it was due to my GTA freezing.
- iperalta, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1i saw it on thursday night and again sunday.
- cheez124, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1GTA IV is really ***** good, iron man kicked ass, i even saw it on a ***** drive in screen, i i really ***** enjoyed it. ben stiller can suck my balls
- insomniac8400, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3Saw it twice in theaters, downloaded it, and bought GTA IV. Clearly pirating movies is just as responsible in destroying the movie business as much as video games. And as soon as I can get it on blu-ray I will.
- doubledoh, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Honestly, while I was watching Iron Man in the theater, I was thinking to myself, THIS is the movie that will inspire me to buy a blu-ray player. Well, a PS3.
- nigdef, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1here i got one for the movie exec arse's went and watched Iron Man at the cinema....whilst nicking it from the net.. if it's good they will come...and steal it at the same time.then watch it at home and then the price of a blank dvd r (usually from sony) to burn it and then spend 15 buckz on the dvd retail this way everyone wins...the studio who made it, sony for blank dvd's and the telecom company for making the net access easy to download from...profit for everyone and a bunch of wanker execs keep there job for another month. until they get fired and become piracy lordz to get revenge for there sacking
- WhatsUpWithJack, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1Dugg for "RUH ROH" in the description.
- pk7677, on 05/06/2008, -1/+2GTA IV and Iron Man is like bread n butter, but halo 3 and heart break kid?
- normalkid0615, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1HB kid was THE worst movie. and halo 3? it was only for xbox 360. wtf
- leif777, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0pizza and tapioca pudding?
- firebirdx01, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Marketing research now concludes that the average American can indeed spend more than $59 on leisure in a given month. OMFG.
- reuscel, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I put down my controller to go check out Iron Man, and it was worth it. Best superhero movie since the original Superman, IMO.
- RationalXubrnce, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1 Maybe it would have opened to 150 million. I'll be watching this weekend to see if Iron Man has a particularly strong second weekend. If it does this would suggest GTA4 did have an effect.
And lets not forget the game was out Tuesday. Had it come out Friday I think it would have had more effect. - Jektal, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1Check out the second comment:
"'they’re blood-shot eyes' their, please change it to their."
Presumably pointing out a typo in the last paragraph, which now reads:
"...kept Iron Man’s bread-and-butter audience indoors, blood-shot eyes illuminated..."
So.. The editor/author saw the comment, but couldn't figure out the correct form of "their" so they just removed the word entirely?! - Diggey11, on 05/06/2008, -0/+0So now that the movie industry can see that only good movies can bring in the cash, I should be expecting quality films from this point on right...?
Opening this weekend:
Redbelt
What Happens in Vegas
Speed Racer
Oh... - MaxMWood, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Overall:
You have no sales and no profits because you make ***** games and ***** movies. Good games and good movies prove this clearly.
Answer:
Make good movies and a good games and you will make some of your beloved money. - cmoreland, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1The Iron Man flick was made by Marvel not typical Hollywood film execs you Ninnyhammers.
