- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -10/+68Dugg for discounting Spikes incredibly ***** list.
- AJRiddle, on 11/22/2008, -9/+36Spielberg is a great director, name one with more great films.
Some of his greats:
Munich (2005)
The Terminal (2004)
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Minority Report (2002)
Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Schindler's List (1993)
Jurassic Park (1993)
The Color Purple (1985)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Jaws (1975) - CoreyTamas, on 11/21/2008, -15/+37I was open to this and ready to be persuaded, but it didn't happen. Check this it about Kevin Smith for example: "Loving his films makes you geeky, slightly smarter than those around you..."
Give me a small break. - scalded, on 11/22/2008, -8/+28My eyes are screwed after reading that entire article.
- Cdog923, on 11/22/2008, -2/+22Your opinion is ***** terrible. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -5/+22Spielbergo FTW
- gozroth, on 11/22/2008, -0/+12ah yes, Mexican Spielberg has never made a movie that was short of bueno.
- NathanielJ, on 11/22/2008, -0/+11Clerks. No "the".
- snasu, on 11/22/2008, -0/+10seems spike either took it down or are having site problems
http://www.spike.com/blog/top-10-overrated/70829
link if it comes back up. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9Actually, his point about Judd Apatow was that he's only directed two films, and they were both pretty damn good by most accounts. So either Spike doesn't understand the difference between a director and a producer or... well, I guess that's really just it. He doesn't belong on their crappy list when they're citing movies he didn't even direct.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -3/+12Wrong, sites need to learn black text on white backgrounds is stupid.
My monitor is not a piece of paper. There's a reason I don't typically stare into lightbulbs. - Dudemeyster, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9While I agree with your point, how can you include Temple of Doom and not The Last Crusade?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -3/+11Okay, people have been hating on Catch Me If You Can lately. I just want to say I think it's a great movie, and I'm hardly alone. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/catch_me_if_you_ca ...
Seeing as to you gave Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Schindler's List "MEH", and you think Close Encounters sucks, I think you just have ***** taste in movies. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -5/+13Okay, so one pretentious comment discredits the point of the whole article? Nice try, I think not.
Spike's list sucked. - spookyttws, on 11/22/2008, -2/+10After reading Spikes list I thought to myself, "I enjoy everyone one of those directors, I don't think they are Gods or can do no wrong, but they've given me a large sampling of good to average movies." So I'm glad others feel similar. If they've amassed a large and relavtively positive body of work, how is that overrated?
- JackSrenton, on 11/22/2008, -1/+9I dont like QT for his personality and ego. He makes some entertaining movies. Pulp Fiction was the only one I find incredible, but every one of them are entertaining.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -0/+8http://www.thefreedictionary.com/discount
"a. To leave out of account as being untrustworthy or exaggerated; disregard: discount a rumor.
...
c. To regard with doubt or disbelief."
You know, some words DO have more than one meaning. - JackSrenton, on 11/22/2008, -0/+8No love for Empire of the Sun?
- JackSrenton, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7Full Metal Jacket!
Barry Lyndon! - AManWithNoName, on 11/22/2008, -6/+13Awesome article. Although, I think it could have been summed up by suggesting that Spike simply rename their list "10 directors who've lost their directing mojo". Virtually every person on the original list are well-known for movies that they did a long time ago, and have recently sucked.
Although, I gotta point out, fighting on the internet IS like winning the special olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded. - leonardutah, on 11/22/2008, -2/+9Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, The Color Purple, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List.
Overrated my ass. - NathanielJ, on 11/22/2008, -5/+111) From the article: "I’m not saying that all these directors are overrated, but at least there are arguments on both sides of the fence for them."
2) I await the bury brigade for saying this, but I can't stand Kubrick. He's directed some fantastic movies, but I think that's in spite of him, not due to him. His movies are painfully "boxy" in every way -- everything is cut and dry, no real transition. - jmoh, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Whew, I thought it was my body trying to tell me that I need to leave the shelter of my mom's basement and go outside and take a walk or something...good thing that's not the case.
- zoodoo12, on 11/22/2008, -5/+10Did he honestly mention Kubrick towards the end of the article?
- captainserial, on 11/22/2008, -3/+8You didn't read the article. This is an article in-response to the list, not the list itself. You should actually Digg this, as the author of the article doesn't agree with the list either.
- h0mi, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Attempting to defend Lucas in an "overrated directors" article is an automatic fail.
- MillionsLivio, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5You're clueless.
- Scottievm, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Don't forget: Empire of the Sun (my favorite Spielberg film), Munich, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal...all fantastic films.
- AFCdtLoeb, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4http://www.spike.com/blog/top-10-overrated/70829
But be warned. Its still severely borked. - donnie0darko0, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5he's full of candy!
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -2/+6Clerks was a success? It's a cult classic, sure, but my mom isn't going to go see Zach & Mira saying "Wow, it's the guy who made Clerks! I love that!"
Some people like him, some don't, and a lot more have never even heard of him. How can he be over-rated? - tattertech, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4I'm a big Kubrick fan, but I can admit to see arguments either way.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3spike took it down lol, owned?
- NinjaJoshy, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3It burns!!!!!!
- Xondar, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4Film School Rejects is the worst film blog I've ever read. I'd go through this article and pick it apart, but I don't feel like writing paragraph after paragraph.
- metapop, on 11/22/2008, -3/+6WRONG
- billpyle, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4How is Clerks not a success? It cost like $27,000 and made over 3 million theatrically and tons more on video/dvd.
- spookyttws, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4After reading Spikes list I thought to myself, "I enjoy everyone one of those directors, I don't think they are Gods or can do no wrong, but they've given me a large sampling of good to average movies." So I'm glad others feel similar. If they've amassed a large and relatively positive body of work, how is that overrated? And several of the movies listed as horrible on the Spike list made me think less of them: Catch Me if You Can, The Royal Tenenbaums (several others, but the Spike seems to have pissed themselves and taken the list down) I quite enjoyed those films.
- chrismgtis, on 11/22/2008, -9/+11What an idiot this "writer" is. I'm burying this. Some writer got upset that someone else had different opinions and claimed his were the best. 'Whaddaya' know? That's unique.
- metapop, on 11/22/2008, -7/+9Wait a minute, did they suggest at the very end that they would have considered Kubrick for the most overrated directors list, along with Petersen and Van Sant?
HERESY
Kubrick may be rated high enough to be in the overrated category, but his movies are masterpieces... 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut... - TrevorBelmont, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Spammers are scum.
- TheNik, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2@familynight: No, dude, you're right. Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense (for the most part) are his only good movies. Mostly because Unbreakable doesn't really have the same structure as ALL OF HIS OTHER MOVIES and The Sixth Sense was his first use of what a twist...
- JaffaC, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2It only seems bad because of its predecessor. In my opinion, it's a solid movie if you haven't seen Raiders.
- Scottievm, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2My favorite. Ten year old Christian Bale FTW.
- theokandroid, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3Dugg for this line,
" I bet you thought you were being really ballsy with this choice, especially considering that your core audience is men who still relive throwing that game-winning touchdown pass twenty years ago and frat boys who think Kurosawa is the sauce they put on their moo shoo." - Kerath, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I did. I agree with the original list.
- vurdillac, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2This guy should relax a little on the "Tim Burton didn't 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'" thing. If a producer exerts an influence on a work to the extent that it reflects the work of the producer more than the actual director, then why not attribute it to the producer? George Lucas didn't direct "The Empire Strikes Back" or "Return of the Jedi" but people always refer to them as his pictures no one complains. I still think of "Poltergeist" as a Spielberg film, because the pacing, look, suburban themes, music - everything - is indistinguishable from Spielberg's other pictures from this period. It just doesn't look or feel like a Tobe Hooper film at all.
- TheBigBad, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4The Terminal? Catch Me If You Can? Artificial Intelligence: AI?
I think you're reaching a bit by calling these great films. The Terminal was downright boring. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Well, I guess quoting internet memes is sort of like the special olympics too. Even when you ***** it up people will still encourage you and applaud.
- familynight, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Wait, wait, wait. You think Spielberg has only done two good movies, and of his movies, the two you are referring to are AI and Duel. I just want to be clear. So, AI is good, while Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Close Encounters, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Munich and Jaws are bad. My opinions differ from yours.
