- FulcrumVitesse, on 03/26/2008, -2/+69That was pretty much necessary, since Gandalf has a big role in that story. I hope they'll pay him well, since he was a good Gandalf in the trilogy.
- ELLIS1128, on 03/26/2008, -2/+64He's gotta be the most badass old grey- haired gay guy in England
- eurynome420, on 03/26/2008, -1/+37SIR Ian McKellen
get it right bitches! - inactive, on 03/26/2008, -3/+37If McKellen can't do it, Ron Paul could easily fill in.
http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/gandalf_paul_08.jp ... - frooo, on 03/26/2008, -5/+32***** yeah!
(I'm sorry but I had to express it like that) - Rizzen, on 03/26/2008, -0/+24It's not.
- antipoet, on 03/26/2008, -1/+22There aren't many other directors I'd trust for this besides Peter Jackson. Guillermo del Toro is one.
- TheZorch, on 03/26/2008, -0/+21Peter Jackson couldn't have gotten a better actor to portray Gandolf. It was like Ian was born for the role.
- inkswamp, on 03/26/2008, -0/+20Hmm... loads fast, actual content on the front page, relevant links right there, no overuse of Flash, no third-party ads, no pop-ups, not over-designed, no massive vanity photo acting as the background of the page.
Yeah, his site really sucks. - BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -1/+19Nothing is less endearing than some cookie cutter website produced by a web designer. People talk about net neutrality but they fail to see how we sacrifice our own identity every day by conforming to what internet society says is the right way to do things. ***** that. Ian McKellen does what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants it.
- schwallman, on 03/26/2008, -4/+21now all we need in 1-3 on bluray. Bring it please...
- andycr512, on 03/26/2008, -0/+15You shall not pass legislation!
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 03/26/2008, -0/+14I feel relieved by this news.. and saying that makes me feel even nerdier than I already am.
- f4nt0m4s, on 03/26/2008, -1/+14Ian McKellen has rocked two awesome rolls, Gandalf and Magneto. Glad to hear that he's on board with the Hobbit.
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -1/+14Everyone has known this since the beginning of time. The one unanswered question is whether Ian Holm will be back, which is just as integral and seemingly obvious. Seeing as Bilbo didn't age a day after finding the ring it won't be a stretch unless they keep delaying, in which case both main actor's may end up dead anyway. Pretty much every actor regardless of the role they have played has already said they will come back even if it is for their inevitably arbitrary insertion into the bridge story, yet Ian Holm has still not said a word.
- inkswamp, on 03/26/2008, -0/+12I was kinda hoping they'd get Kevin Smith.
"Hey, try not to blow any dwarves on your way through the Misty Mountains!" - ChiffX, on 03/26/2008, -0/+12I don't remember Frodo playing a major role in the hobbit.
- engarak, on 03/26/2008, -0/+11Umm...have you ever picked up the Hobbit as a book or even saw the late 70's cartoon remake of The Hobbit? Frodo isn't in The Hobbit; heck he's not even born by the time Bilbo ends the quest in The Hobbit.
- andycr512, on 03/26/2008, -0/+10"As disgusted as I am with Jackson's trampling of characterization and the story itself..."
YOU try cramming 1,200 pages of story into 3 2:30 movies without adulterating them the slightest bit or leaving out details. - BigPapi, on 03/26/2008, -2/+12"If we were to draw a graph of my process, of my method, it would be something like this: Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, action, wizard "You shall not pass!", cut. Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian......How did I know what to say? They had my lines written down on a script. How did I know where to stand? People showed me."
- SilverBadger, on 03/26/2008, -2/+11A little? Ian McKellen is a king of queens ... but I can't imagine any other actor more perfect for the role of Gandalf.
- daborg, on 03/26/2008, -0/+9You suck.
- longlukey, on 03/26/2008, -0/+9it wouldnt be the same without him
- Chordinator, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8If you read some of the text, you'll learn that his website wasn't just designed by any regular web designer, but a WEBMASTER named Keith Stern.
Here are some of his other webmastering conquests:

- zeitgueist, on 03/26/2008, -1/+9Posting without reading the article = epic failure
- antich, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7I did a lot of research here - it turns out it's Mitch Tomlinson of Jasper, Indiana.
- robotto, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7"Damn right, you are"
Joda - pnunn, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7Seriously- if you made any claims about being "really into" Tolkien at ANY point in your life you totally just earned your poseur badge. Actually, I think just saying that might earn you a poseur badge... but if it hadn't you would totally be good for it now.
To "dork dumb" it down a little- What you just said was the Star Wars equivalent of asking who would play Luke and Leia in the prequels...
To fly in the face of your claim though: I will now say: I think Elijah Wood would be great as Smaug the Dragon. - fluxion, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7Guillermo del Toro (director of Pan's Labyrinth) is directing this one instead of Peter Jackson (who's still producing it apparently)
i like del toro's directing style and personally think his darker fantasy style will give The Hobbit a nice change of pace from the sappyness people often complain about with regard to the LOTR films - Pilot85, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6...wtf?
- gndoss, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7Audio on by default. Enough said.
- inkswamp, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Damn! And I was hoping Ewan McGregor would play the young Gandalf.
- trump48257, on 03/26/2008, -4/+9So did he create his own website? That's a bit endearing if that's the case, but I think 1998 wants it back: http://www.mckellen.com/
- maiku00, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6bless my beard
- arcticsoft, on 03/26/2008, -3/+8To see gandalf like this is sad :(
http://www.mckellen.com/stage/aladdin/index.htm - Nanobe, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4AFAIK, only some of the orcs. Hm.. it seems pretty bad when you think of it that way.
- artgon, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4I'd hit it...
- ReelVideo, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4"Don't forget about the animated Hobbit and LotR from the seventies."
Oh, I try to. - zephc, on 03/26/2008, -6/+10Might I also add http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QAlt4Sfl7Q
- fredclown, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Hopefully Ian Holm will also be in the movie (Bilbo) since they already put him into the other movies as young Bilbo in a flashback.
- MrTulip, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4the orkish hordes
- Supurcell, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5Don't forget about the animated Hobbit and LotR from the seventies.
- bella2k, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4I was SO hoping for this!!!! The LOTR trilogy are my all-time favorite movies!
- dylio, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Pauldalf: YOU SHALL NOT VIOLATE THE CONSTITUTION!
- Supurcell, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Have you read the Hobbit lately? It's a children's book. J.R.R. wrote it for his children. Thirteen dwarves, each with a musical instrument, ponies, every other page has a song on it; this is not dark fantasy.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Ian McKellan is a god among geeks.
