The action-thriller, directed by Francis Lawrence opens in theaters on December 14.
I Am Legend is based on Richard Matheson's novel of the same name, but the film will be closer to The Omega Man, the second film adaptation of the novel.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Omega_Man- gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/11/2007, -24/+6I Thought it was going to be "The last man on earth.... Has to repopulate." Was expecting some sort of weird asexual Will Smith scene.
- arcooke, on 10/11/2007, -17/+115Will Smith is an incredible actor. I trust anything he's in to be good, or at the very least, not suck. He's one of the rare musician-gone-actor that actually worked.
- Sutanreyu, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Actually, it was the other way around. He was an actor, then a musician. >_>
- bs0l, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1Then an actor again.

You are bottom feeding plebs. - birkoph, on 10/11/2007, -5/+66Sooo umm where are the vampires?
- jgtg32a, on 10/11/2007, -7/+36@xcbxcb
Independence day rocked I don't know what you are talking about
I, Robot wasn't good but the robot Sonny fights like an absolute bad ass, watch it again seriously - birkoph, on 10/11/2007, -53/+7WILL SMITH DIES AT THE END.. THE VAMPIRES KILL THE LAST MAN ON EARTH...
Morgan is filled with regret at his actions, and vows to cure her. He is immune to the disease for some unknown reason. He wonders if it may be due to a bite he received from a bat in his younger days. The bat's biological defenses may have weakened the disease enough before passing it on, resulting in his immunity. Whatever the reason, when he gives Ruth some of his blood, her symptoms instantly disappear. At last, a cure has been found. But before they can do anything about it, Ruth's people arrive, chase Morgan into a church and murder him in front of the altar, killing the last true man on Earth.
***Caution Spoiler Above.*** - spookyttws, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6@ birkoph
Seriously, I saw this trailer in the theater earlier today and thought, "Cool!...so is it a zombie movie, or what?" Glad Digg gave some clarification. - snapcase, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6Well, I'm rather disappointed that it's taking place in modern New York City. The trailer is full of other scenes that hint that this movie is going to be a major bastardization of the original novel. But that said, I really, really, really hope this movie doesn't suck. I'm a big fan of Richard Matheson's novels. (for those of you who don't know, several other movies have been made from his works including Somewhere in Time, and What Dreams May Come (though What Dreams May Come is completely different from the novel)) When I watch this movie I'll have to make sure to remind myself to not nitpick on the differences between it and the novel (like I did with Hitchhikers Guide). I know it won't live up to the book, but hopefully it will be good on its own.
- ogremidget, on 10/28/2007, -1/+66Finally, a movie where Will Smith will save the world with a bunch of one-liners.
- Boondoggle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8@xcbxcb::
You sound like one of those guys who say "cinema" like "enema" and you enjoyed it. - xcbxcb, on 10/11/2007, -17/+5boondoggle:
If by that you mean my favorite movie of all time is either Cannibal Holocaust or Big Trouble in Little China, but that I enjoy good sci-fi every now and again as well - Total Recall, Blade Runner, whatever, or that I really enjoyed Wild Wild West, but found the two movies in question to be utterly unoriginal on the one hand and a bastardization on the other hand, or that I grew up listening to DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, or that I will and can categorically reject as watchable any and all movies that rely on hacking alien technology with a ***** Mac or car chase scenes, then sure. That's exactly the kind of person I am. - farrellj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yup, it's a remake of The Omega Man, based on the book "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson, and it's a classic.
Hope the do a good job with it! Unlike another "B" movie from the same period I liked, Rollerball, which had a really sucky remake. - EndersGame, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0I want this movie to be good but I don't know how I could enjoy it if there is only one main character, where is the plot development? It makes it easier to make a movie with ONLY action when you only have one character right? It looks like it could be lame but we'll see.
- digghasnoethics, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Its less "I am Legend" more "I am Travesty"
If you want to make a big budget, big explosions, popcorn movie what is the point of stealing the name of a story which is about the collapse and mental destruction of an everyman character? Hell, I even bet that Will Smith survives.
The only thing that seems to remain of the original book is the name. - EmperorAwesome, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Are you serious? Oh mans this'll be sweet. Omega Man roooooooooooooooooooocked.
- NgrHader, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Just with the Epic music playing alone made it worth to watch
- NgrHader, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22I bet you when he finds out he's the last man on earth he says
"Oh HELL NAW!" - aoneal417, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16First aliens, then robots, now vampires... what can't Will Smith save the world from.
- aoneal417, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1At least Arnold Schwarzenegger is not going to be in it like it was originally planned, that would have made for some good one liners though. "Hasta la Vista, vampires"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Legend_%28film%29- Sutanreyu, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1Ahnold is the producer.
- silenceHR, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7another great SF story that's willsmithed .... i can't wait for Dune or Foundation starring Will Smith ...
- FunkyPits, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4@arcooke
So you're saying Wild Wild West was a good movie. The man you are digging down is right you are bottom feeding plebs. Independence day was the biggest pile of horrifically cheesy crap ever. I Robot was OK at best. He was fantastic in Ali and the other movie he was great in nobody ever talks about is Enemy of the State. I originally went to see it only for the Episode 1 trailer, but sat through it and loved it. However to say anything he touches is golden is a complete and utter fallacy. Let the digging down by people who love crap movies begin. - ijacker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@aoneal417
you are forgetting the GIANT ***** MECHANICAL SPIDER!
oh, and props to spiderstic for the linkys! +1 - VAXcat, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0 Good Grief! One of the best stories from classic science fiction, and they pick WIll Smith to star in it! For crying out loud, the previous two movie versions of this story had Charlton Heston and Vincent Price as the stars! Will Smith is no Hesto or Price, he's not even in the same league. Why the hell does every science fiction movie have to be ruined by Will ***** Smith! When it comes to a science fiction plot, he pbrings nothing to the role. He's wrecking the damn genre!
- Supurcell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3***** just got real.
- TheCount, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Sooo umm where are the vampires?"
You should read the Wiki, it's not really about vampires in the classic sense, so it's good they didn't show the vampires and have people saying, "WTF, a vampire movie? Why the hell would Will Smith do a ***** vampire flick?" - christadiggs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I read this story about 10 years ago and thought it would make a great film. So happy to see that someone has taken it on. :)
- jklyon, on 10/11/2007, -14/+6I hope this will be better than "Hitch".
- andrewsmith1986, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4the question is whether it will be better than omega man.
- batmang, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3I think anything will be better than the Emo Zombies of "Omega Man".
- jgtg32a, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10@andrewsmith1986
Will Smith is good but he's no Charlton Heston - AegisGFX, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1So this is a remake of Omega Man?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067525/ - CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Looks like it IS a remake of Omega Man, with vampires instead of zombies.
- Supurcell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It looked more like the Quiet Earth to me. I didn't see anything about vampires in that trailer.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089869/
- caution, on 10/23/2007, -11/+63Will Smith? So we can expect lots of jive and one liners? I hope they can work in "I make this look good." White people love that.
- dn11, on 10/28/2007, -1/+114"vampires, AHHH HELL NOOOO"!
- hoovcluck, on 10/11/2007, -10/+9My favorite Will Smith Quote is from Bad Boys 2 during the car chase scene:
"That one made my butt hole pucker up!" - navster15, on 10/28/2007, -7/+55*punches an alien*
"Welcome to earth!"
Best. Will Smith Line. Ever. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/11/2007, -12/+9I believe that's "Welcome tah Earph!"
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+8You know, I just watched the trailor, and it looks like they're taking a more serious approach to it. Hopefully the writers don't feel the need to make it "hip" and throw in stupid one-liners. Anyways, I think Smith is capable of doing a good job.
- wallish, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I've always liked: "JIMMY NOOOOO!!!"
Go ahead, yell it out loud, it works for any situation involving failure. - CLAPYRHANDS, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0"***** about to get real."
- Soulhuntre, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"... and what is that SMELL!!!" (kick)
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Is this a remake of Omega Man?
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16yes, but the original book omega man was based on was called I Am Legend
- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Anyone who hasn't seen the original Omega Man, please for the love of god go rent it now.
i hope they keep the jive talking zombies.....
p.s. is there like a board room somewhere in hollywood whose sole job is to brainstorm the movies/IP's in which Will Smith would be the last person on earth any normal person would see him fit for, and then giving those movies a green light? - katovar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Also the 1964 Vincent Price movie, The Last Man on Earth. They changed the names but it's the same story based on the Richard Matheson novel. I can't wait.
- Dabisu, on 10/24/2007, -1/+11Forget Omega Man, read the book.
- grazny, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3God damn ***** blog spam..
- scottamlegend, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1This isn't how I imagined the book, but it looks like it's going to be pretty good anyways.
- Rikushix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30That is sweet. I'd like to see how they do the whole "only living person in New York" kind of thing. I thought the first ten minutes of 28 Days Later, around an empty London, was some of the best cinematography ever.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7After all this time I never believed it would actually get made. Not sure about Will Smith as Neville but I will keep an open mind. At this point it is going to have too much of a 28 Days Later vibe though
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/11/2007, -14/+3A Vampire/end of the world flick?
Sounds crazy, but why Will Smith...?
I just hope it doesn't end up crappy like I-Robot, Independence Day and Men In Black... - tonich03, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29This trailer just screams 28 days later...I love it.
- cyranthus, on 10/11/2007, -22/+2how the hell do you see 28 days from this completely ambiguous trailer!? last time i rememeber 28 days had zombies... this had nothing (at least in the trailer). this trailer is weak.
- tonich03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2cyranthus
Say what? - manbear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@cyranthus It is called a teaser, get over it.
- djspanky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1More like the Resident Evil 3 trailer.
- MrLunar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@cyranthus: "how the hell do you see 28 days from this completely ambiguous trailer!?"
I can only assume by your ignorance that you have not seen 28 Days Later.
- Bilbobaggins, on 10/24/2007, -5/+4It seems like a cliche movie, until you read what the plot is about. And it actually seems pretty cool.
- DarkReign16, on 10/24/2007, -1/+22Vampire apocalypse cliche? What world do you live in?
- ohgr, on 10/24/2007, -9/+27I for one welcome our Vampire overlords
- GreySkiesBlue, on 10/24/2007, -7/+2@ohgr: Newsflash - that meme is dead. Shut the ***** up.
- InsultComedy, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1From the director of Constantine, one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
- Burguois, on 10/11/2007, -15/+6Wow, they've completely ***** it up even from the start.
Robert Neville was the last man alive, and he was not fortunate to have the entire city at his disposal. He lived in a ***** shack in the middle of nowhere with barely enough fuel or time to get to places and back before the night set in. He did not live in the middle of a city (certainly not New York) with all of the modern conveniences like luxury cars, short-band radio and golf.
Can't Will smith for once be in a film that isn't a complete deviation from the original source material? I Am Legend was, if anything, a psychological thriller/horror. Certainly not anything to do with "action"- tonich03, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27Welcome to Hollywood. We don't give a **** about source material.
- gnslngr1919, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Is there any "action" parts in the trailer? The only "action"-y scene is him driving in the car. Down a straight road.
- pigsbladder, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9dude, most people don't care about the real thing they just want to be entertained
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8> "Is there any "action" parts in the trailer? The only "action"-y scene is him driving in the car. Down a straight road."
One of the bridges in New York City gets blown up... - gnslngr1919, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The bridge thing is a good point, but it's still not Will Smith doing the typical "action hero" stuff that the OP was having a problem with.
- Endling, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2Anyone else think that the song is a pretty blatant rip-off of the theme from requiem for a dream?
Other than that it looks like a decent enough movie, I liked that pull back driving clip.- InsultComedy, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2Sad but true.
- FlyinWhee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Too bad the "theme from Requiem for a Dream" is actually a piece by Mozart. Which would technically make even Requiem a ripoff.
- texpundit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I dunno about ripoff, but the music for the first half of the trailer *totally* sounds like the Kronos Quartet.
- DarkReign16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3That movie looks awesome, and the idea of a a vampire apocalypse is completely original. This movie is going to rock.
- gunslinger37, on 10/24/2007, -2/+47is it just me or does that scene when he is driving through the empty streets in the red car look like a racing game...
- DarkReign16, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15If you had your pick of cars from around all of New York, you'd probably pick the fastest one to get away from the vampires.
- InsultComedy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6Horrible CGI. It just looks so damn fake.
- xXGigantorXx, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2@darkreign16
So why the hell do we see him driving a Ford Mustang? - DarkReign16, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I saw the HD trailer, and I noticed little CGI, and none of it looked fake.
- magic6435, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5@xXGigantorXx
"So why the hell do we see him driving a Ford Mustang?"
Cause a Jetta Mustang is just to slow! - dn11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20plus it was a nice opportunity for product placement - you just know Ford wants to be known as the car to buy if you need to escape post apocalyptic vampire zombies
- evil-doer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"I saw the HD trailer, and I noticed little CGI, and none of it looked fake."
logic update for you: if you notced any cgi at all, it obviously didnt look real. - derkmerkin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's not a mustang, its a GT40 you can tell by the 2 inlets on the cars hood.
- Morphinity, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19This movie looks fantastic. A truly intriguing story line.
Was I the only one who noticed the gas prices in that trailer? $6.63 a gallon (See for yourself at 1:12 in the trailer)- DarkReign16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19It is supposed to be set in the near future. So hooray for consistency in the plot. = )
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2So, it's a utopian fantasy film, is it?
- MasT3r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yeah that was the first thing i noticed
- kaffein, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Just a remake of a film that was originally a book... But I'll probably go see it for the hell of it.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0058700 - herrshuster, on 10/24/2007, -8/+4is anyone else TIRED of the requiem for a dream theme?
- ASSHO, on 10/11/2007, -23/+1THe book and the movie look pretty different. In the book, the vampires are pretty civil and it's about a New World Order. It's sentimental, and the prose is over the top. The last 3 paragraphs of the book is just writing at its finest. One of the best endings i've ever read:
Robert Neville looked over the new people of the Earth. He knew he did not belong to them; he knew that, like the vampires, he was anathema and black terror to be destroyed. And, abruptly, the concept came, amusing to him evein in his pain.
A coughing chuckle filled his throat. He turned and leaned against the wall while he swallowed the pills. Full circle, he thought while the final lethargy crept into his limbs. Full circle. A new terror born in death, a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever.

At the end of the movie, Will Smith hacks into the vampire's motherbrain with a Newton. The last scene is he and Martin Lawrence sipping Mai Tais in Maui while appreciative and buxom Hawaiian vampires rub their feet.
And then he sez: "I am legend."

damnit! damnit! damnit!
This would have been much better if they had cast someone like, I dunno, William H. Macy in the Will Smith role... I mean come one.. Just because he's the last man on earth does that mean he has to be super ripped and know how to use guns and all that?
It would have been a little more believable... - xkrwlng, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4that trailer wasn't good...
- SilverBack101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Awwww! I always wanted the video to be made by a guy who looked like a red haired lumberjack since I recently read the book "I Am Legend".

Good find! It reminds me of the movie 28 Days Later with the setting in England. You may also say that the idea of a man left alone in the World after a disease wiping out humanity and changing others came from the idea of I Am Legend.
Great fan movie for sure. Still needed a bushy beard though. :p

- grrrrrrrrrrrrrr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's a remake of 'Omega Man' marketed with the packaging of his biggest hit 'Independence Day'...and.... "He's not alone..."
I'm assuming a senile Charlton Heston is not going to make cameo...so I guess it must be vampires...(without any of the inner city urban strife drug-ravaged ghetto paranoia resonance of the previous flick...zippo resonance, I predict)
Chuck was probably 'Plan B'
Buried as 'lame'...and I rarely ever bury anything ('live and let live') but Will Smith, unfortunately is a spoke person for la-mo Hollywood product, and this article is probably just a lame co-option of a social network by a publicist for lame marketing purposes...and seriously, if it is...the lesson from this movie, if it tanks...which it probably will, is: good stories with great stars, market themselves...story, story, story...with pictures...do it for Will, if no one else, he's going to need a hit soon...- ShorXrorE, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3ugh....ugh.................................................that just made me dislike it even more.
- kiltederic1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2and The Omega Man is a remake of The Last Man on Earth w/ Vincent Price (oh so good, like gravy) which was based on a book.
See The Last Man on Earth, pure classic Price.
- m3r0v1ng1an, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I, Robot was horrible. Not necessarily Will Smith's fault - but it was a crap movie. If you disagree, you don't know Dick.
- ShorXrorE, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1i, robot was awful
independence day is awful but entertaining
wild wild west is awful
MIB is entertaining, MIB two is mildly entertaining
he's a good enough actor, but please people, they're not good movies. they're BS entertainment. they're not worth crap. and most of the movies he's done were awful. this is most likely going to be mediocre. hopefully it won't be as awful as underworld but i'm getting ready to vote it second worst vampire movie ever after that godawful underworld sack of garbage.- SakisRakis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Pursuit of Happiness?
- m3r0v1ng1an, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0He's the last man on earth but there are thousands of super hot nympho vampire babes who want to "get jiggy" with the Fresh Prince!
- apothekari, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Please Please Please.....
For the love of all thats good and right in the universe, Just one of you people pick up and read Matheson's incredible novella.
It is a genuine masterpiece with an ending that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
It is IMHO one of the greatest horror tales ever written,
It has been made into films for the 3rd time now and every time Hollywood takes the original story and wipes its ass with it.
It is NOT Sci-Fi {not that sci fi is wrong it's just that this is a horror tale pure and simple}, It is NOT a cheapo popcorn flick waiting to be born.
It is a truly heart rending tale of what it truly means to be human, the last one on earth in fact.
And now Will "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SMELL!"Smith will slowly rape this amazingly deep and complex story while stupid ***** explosions and retarded one liners drag their tired...so very tired asses across the screen in one looooooooooong Burger King ad.
Wheres the goddamn video and album already.
I hope Jazzy Jeff sneaks into his house at night and ***** in Jada's oatmeal.
*sigh*
Please someone just read the novel so it's in your mind and not this piece of *****.- SakisRakis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You haven't even ***** seen this and you condemn it out of hand. It is common knowledge that books are better, but film has its own value.
- ASSASSYN, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Will smith is the *****!
- beginnorth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Pretty neato.
Just so you know, I actually live a block away from where they shot one of the scenes. It was some sort of scene featuring zombies running like maniacs in the famed Washington Sq. Park. Here's a picture I took:

In fact, I used that picture in one of my blog entries:

Pretty sweet.
~ben - DblTap, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Looks good.
- calenti, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'm sure a lot of this is in the Wikipedia entry but my biggest problem with this is Will Smith himself. Not that he's a bad actor, he's not. It's just that this material was written by Matheson to be bleak and ultimately futile, savoring today's victory and ignoring the certain defeat that's approaching. Neville is supposed to be in a hopeless position and struggles mightily against the night, but eventually civilization succumbs to entropy, the center cannot hold and the world is overcome by darkness. Smith just doesn't do those kind of movies so we will get some motivation (oh, my child! oh, my bridge!), followed by a little darkness, followed by a montage, followed by everyone walking out of the sunrise carrying children and smoking cigars.
I did read the novel and Omega Man changed a lot of stuff but it got the tone right. The thing that was and is most enduring about Hesty's early 70s sci-fi dystopia phase is that those movies (and the stories that they were based on) were so unforgivingly pessimistic about the human condition - that we not only would wind up loosing mere anarchy upon the world but that we -have- to, it's a biological imperative and the damage is permanent, not temporary consequences easily handled with a Ford Mustang and a golden retriever. The world is the fox and we are the scorpion.
Like I said, Smith's not a bad actor at all and I enjoy most of his movies. His presence just a sign that this story has been big budget-ized and will likely be dissatisfyingly conventional, in the same manner as the 1997 version of "Vanishing Point" was from the original. I hate sounding like an Ain't It Cool News GFB grand mal rant but the combination of many grubby studio hands (likely including Smith's own) plus the expense of the film and associated need to distill the message down to something suitable for a Burger King cup, will combine in ham-handed attempts to make the story more 'accessible' by removing the tougher dramatic elements in favor of a more traditional narrative arc. Our world no longer has room for anti-heroes.
And...this was originally aimed at the Ahnald before California fell for Enron's propaganda and kicked out Gray Davis. Tidbit from the web: I used to read the Ask A Linguist lists and I saw a post from Mark Russovinich (I think that was his name) back in 1998 or so talking about writing this movie, and asking linguists for feedback on ideas about how and what of a tribal group of devolved humans would use for communication. The idea was that they had -had- language and hadn't lost the physical equipment but no longer had the higher brain function necessary for complex symbology , and so instead of just jumping up and down and grunting or the obligatory movie growl, Mark wanted to know what their communication pattern might look like. It was interesting stuff.- calenti, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Mark Protosevich, not Russovinich.
Mental note: must take better mental notes. - shableep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2cool stuff man. you know... if you write this much in a digg comment, imagine what you would do with a blog. you seem pretty passionate about this stuff... so blog it up, man!
- calenti, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Thanks, but the key to blogging seems to be having an interesting life filled with things worth writing down. I'd have to really, really, really work on that.
- calenti, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Mark Protosevich, not Russovinich.
