- laplacian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+62wow, you completely miss the point of the imdb.
- ArmyOfFun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51This article is straight up inaccurate. It's true that IMDB has an adult filter in place now, and that it's on by default.
The article is completely wrong with this line:
"Supposedly the filter can be turned off, but only by paid members of the IMDbPro service."
All you have to do is register with IMDB, and you can turn the filter off via the following link:
http://www.imdb.com/find/preferences?_adult=1
You don't have to pay a cent to IMDB because I never have, and with that preference turned off I can find all the info on Shortbus or Debbie Does Dallas that my heart (and wang) desires. - ZackScott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12So THAT'S how you find those movies on the Pirate Bay!
- justinhambleton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I found Vin Diesel's XXX pretty damn offensive... save the children.
- RawShark, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I thought IMDB started going downhill when they deleted "Gay ***** From Outer Space" from the data base for political correctness reasons. I see they have come to their senses though.
- lopla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The Christians are at it again, banning porn and molesting small boys at the same time seems to be something they can't get away from.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What other site do you propose?
- stephenv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8If IMDb was smart, they'd do it similar to The Pirate Bay and make it so you had to be registered and have it set in your profile that you want to see adult films at all (as well as giving a search option for mainstream/adult/both). By censoring it completely, they are potentially giving some competitive upstart the edge they need to be a little more useful.
- zadadka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Caligula.....mmmmmm !!
- RawShark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It was deleted at one point. By "come to their senses," I was implying that the entry has been returned. Thanks for the links though.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's an excellent point. Generally self censorship would be a much preffered option.
I had better run off an verify my listing is still there..... (edit: it is) - ricearoni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You beat me to it. Results are fine with membership. Far from censorship, this may just be being responsible.
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No they didn't.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0274518/ - TimoP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Weird, I could've sworn the filter has been on for a while now. I searched some porn films at imdb and they didn't show up by searching the titles. I had to find them from the actors filmographies.
- rtcreg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When did "Caligula" become "mainstream"?
- Recuso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google video, for reference:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5121649266422516795&q=Gayniggers+from+Outer+Space - jmikola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Interesting, I just verified this for myself. I cleared out my cookies and tried to search for Caligola and it was oddly hidden from the results; however I had no trouble accessing it by the direct URL: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080491/
Rather than creating an account to get around this, or even using something like BugMeNot to share accounts/passwords, I found that popping in "imdb TITLE" into Google and hitting "I'm feeling lucky" is much easier (esp. if done through the Firefox search bar). The first result is, more times than not, the exact page I'm looking for. As an added benefit, I don't have to deal with IMDB's iffy search interface and so-so pattern matching. - underthelinux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ArmyOfFun
Second. - noisician, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sure maybe you can get to the stuff if you register and log in
but the site never even tells you that it is blocking anything
so users will search for something, not find it, think that IMDB is incomplete, and go elsewhere - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No idea who I'm quoting here, but
"I'd rather my kids grew up watching films of people making love than films of people killing each other"
Censorship sucks harder than my mom. - zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're an idiot. If you've ever seen the movie you'd know that there couldn't have been any mistake in the kind of movie they were making. It wasn't "spliced together". It was obvious what it was.
However, while I would agree it was pornographic it was also quite true to the subject and was well researched though I would hardly call truly historically accurate or a documentary but writing it off, as many do, as simply porn is foolish. Read up on Caligula and you'll find the movie got a lot right about the time and the person. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caligula - heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those of you who haven't seen it, it's really not as funny as you're probably imagining.
- TimoP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So you think a few sex scenes somehow eliminate the "real movie" part from Caligula? In your opinion are Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole and all the other actors in Caligula porn actors?
- aesop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2what are you people talking about? Shortbus shows up just fine without me being registered.
http://bildr.no/view/32344 - Leomarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll bet that the Parents Television Research Council, and Focus on the Family had something to do with it.
- artfuldodga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://imdb.com/title/tt0367027/< searched 'shortbus'
searched, found.. whats the big deal? - SilentMichael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No porn on IMDB? Oh NO! They lost the format war with HD-DVD!!!
... - deepthroat1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Might be time to play the classic Porn or Not Porn game http://www.pornornotporn.com/
- thepompano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, searching for Caligula has been down for months. You can still find that movie by following through actors' filmography, but a search for it (and its translated titles) yields nothing.
- jangeloca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually , the one thing I liked about the website was that I could locate both Porn & Non Porn references .
The need to filter might make sense if they wanted to make sure to exclude adult content from minors by way of registering , but I do not think there is anything that might offend a parent short of some Adult Film Titles. - JesusIsSatan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I've been trying to get these DVDs from Amazon for 6 months now.

So I guess thy consider themseves porn actors based on your ridiculous logic.
- chance2002iu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I logged into my account and went to http://www.imdb.com/find/preferences
the adult filter preference didn't appear until I followed ArmyOfFun's link of http://www.imdb.com/find/preferences?_adult=1
notice the ?_adult=1 meaning I had to have somehow known to feed that flag to the site in order to have that option. It's kinda shady in my opinion. Also, it is my opinion that a hidden preference (especially when they have my DOB to verify that I am of legal age) is as good as censorship.
This new development saddens me since IMDB is one of the sites I query for information for my own personal movie database. Granted obscure titles like "Breasts of Fury 14: Cum Slut Nuns" (I made up the title but wouldn't be surprised if it actually existed) would never show up but more 'mainstream' porn titles like "Where the Boy's Aren't 17) should show up.
I'm torn between burying as inaccurate because IMDB didn't screw with the database (just the filters and the search parameters) and digging it so adults know that their options for searching are limited. - anirban2008, on 01/27/2008, -0/+0Caligula was fu**ed by himself... just like us people searching for the movie for free download...!!! Ha ha ha............
- Dragon88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was just noticing on the film mentioned...
http://imdb.com/name/nm0197602/
Was an actor in that film REALLY also in "Pusher"? - crossers, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0I have no comment... as I missed information about this!
http://www.shpe-sac.org
http://www.ocflex.com/
http://www.trgovinca.org
http://www.chasr.org/ - fidelio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also could found Shortbus with no problem....
BUT! I searched "Batalla en el cielo" and ended up in the making of (!!)
then I searched "brown bunny", and not look either.
so IMDb is messing with the results. That is for sure. - SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2build your own website then, ass
- fiver22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Go Go Gadget Cencorship!" Thank GAWD that there are ppl out there who judge what I can and cannot view -it's soooo LIBERATING.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You really need to learn what censorship is. This is not.
- RogerStrong, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Caligula *is* porn.
As I understand it, respected actors signed up for a mainstream film. They filmed a mainstream film. Then the producers shot a bunch of porn with other "actors" and spliced it into the movie.
Mainstream movies and porn are different industries and different markets. If IMDB decides not to include porn, it's NOT censorship. It's a simple, well-justified decision of what to index and what not to. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10It's always sad when a popular website starts censoring content... this has also been happening lately on Digg....
- sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6UM he probably should have said
there are better places to get porn info than imdb
imdb has no screenies
I am glad imdb is doing this.. it really is annoying to be googlin a porn title only to have the first link you click on be imdb.
er I mean so i have heard - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1laplacian...why is it up to YOU to decide the "point" of the IMDB? Isn't that up to the original creators or the current owners?
It was never intended to have the thousands of internet or DVD porn movies that come out be included, yet it now does.
And this article is *****. The Brown Bunny and Caligula came up fine for me. As did a few asolute, 100% no other reason but for porn movies. As did many porn stars who have done nothing even close to resemblng a mainstream movie.
But again...just because YOU think that you are capable of saying what the IMDB was "meant for" doesn't make your opinion on it the right one.
F r example, I can say "The iPod is meant only for listening to Jim Neighbors songs." Does that mean that Apple is being wron by selling other songs? - libertao, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5Oh come on guys where's your sarcasm meter, that was funny +1
- Fairly, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1IMDb sucks.
- sheepster, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1people like this make ... add offensive line here.
- iomegaboy, on 10/12/2007, -83/+12There are a lot better places to find porn than IMDB.
