- spepin, on 08/11/2008, -26/+189As good as The Dark Knight was, there was absolutely no way it was better than a good portion of those movies.
The fanboys tried, succeeded for a while but alas, they couldn't keep it forever.
Good to see Shawshank Redemption up there, in my opinion that's the best film created... - reelskamachine, on 08/12/2008, -19/+120The movie was a good movie, buy WAY overrated. Its probably the best super hero movie out there, but again, not the best movie out there
- t3hmyth, on 08/12/2008, -4/+62Film's can't objectively be called the "Best" of all time, because each (good) film is unique, and represents a completely different personal vision than any other film. Sure, some may be more enjoyable, re-watchable, innovative, etc... But that doesn't justify the "objective" placement of one film over another. Granted that by acclamation an approximate attempt at an objective classification of films can be made (The per-decade Sight&Sound Poll), but personal taste cannot be divorced from film classification.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -10/+58Yeah wait a second here. The movie was fantastic, no doubt about it, but what the hell was it doing at number 1? Number 3? Hello? We're talking major cinema here. Let's not get too nuts.
- lokee73, on 08/12/2008, -2/+48To this day I am irritated that Shawshank lost Best Picture to Forrest Gump.
Gump was a decent movie, but Shawshank was just better; and I think time has proven that. - Swarms, on 08/12/2008, -6/+43"Best movie" is an opinion. Who cares what others think about a movie that you love? I, for one, hated Pulp Fiction, but I'm not about to say it doesn't belong on that list since clearly I'm in the minority.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -18/+52Fight Club should be in the Top 20
- adventflux, on 08/12/2008, -1/+32I think the more important thing is that Morgan Freeman wins no matter what. And rightfully so.
- xkingADROCKx, on 08/12/2008, -6/+32The imdb top 250 is a joke.
- Fabbyfubz, on 08/12/2008, -1/+26Then everyone would vote either 9 or 2 HRRRRRRRRRr
- leerayIG88, on 08/12/2008, -2/+25Get busy living or get busy dying....
- EtherGnat, on 08/12/2008, -1/+24Well said, but nevertheless humans have an innate need to rank and categorize things. I'm convinced the earliest cave paintings were a top 10 list of the easiest animals to hunt.
- Filipp0, on 08/12/2008, -8/+26IMDB's list is not about the BEST movies. It'about the most popular movies.
- gaqua, on 08/12/2008, -0/+17The city wide cell phone thing was kind of absurd.
But let's remember: we're watching a movie where a guy dresses up like a bat and beats up criminals every night. - twiztidsinz, on 08/12/2008, -9/+24How can you say that?? It was Heath Ledger's last work!!
That makes it the greatest work EVAR in the history of man!!! - hafbaked, on 08/12/2008, -5/+19you should watch a couple more movies.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+15Now you come to me and you say "Don Corleone, give me justice." But you don't ask with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me Godfather. Instead, you come into my home on the day my daughter's to be married and you ask me to do murder for money.
- Deadpixel1221, on 08/12/2008, -0/+11That's god damn right.
- GregIsLegend, on 08/12/2008, -4/+15I agree, way overrated. The whole, city wide cell phone sonar thing really brought the movie back down to comic book movie status for me.
Great movie, far from the greatest though. And to be honest, Heath Ledgers performance was the one thing that took it from being a good movie, to a great movie. - yohnstoppable, on 08/12/2008, -0/+11EDIT: I'm retarded
- kaplanfx, on 08/12/2008, -0/+11Forrest Gump was a great movie, and is one of the better films picked for best picture in the last couple of decades. Sure I think Shawshank is the better film (and one of my all time favorites), but to be honest I only heard about it when its popularity built up later on, I don't think I had even seen it by the time the academy had awarded Gump. Sure the critics should know better, but they are definitely biased to a more popular film.
- sevvo, on 08/12/2008, -0/+10How can you be so obtuse?
- Havs, on 08/12/2008, -3/+12What's really sad is that the Godfather was bumped off the top slot. All the dark knight fanboys were voting it down in order to keep DK at the top.
- dbldn, on 08/12/2008, -5/+14IMDb's top 250 - what a waste of time caring what movie is on top.
- kawaiirobo, on 08/12/2008, -3/+12Is it just me or is this quite similar to the Mario Galaxy issue last year?
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+9Well, to be honest, you really have to watch it more than once to understand what's really going on in the film. There's so many lessons, themes, and interesting things to live by in the godfather. Once you really have a good understanding of the film, there is no way you would think that the dark knight is a "much better" film.
- Yetisquatch, on 08/12/2008, -2/+9if more people thought like this then this world would truly be a better place.
ps. i loved pulp fiction. - morphinapg, on 08/12/2008, -1/+8The 10's and 1's are not ignored, but they are given a much lower weight. As are votes from users who rarely vote on a movie
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+7Voting down another movie to keep tdk at the top? Now that's just dirty.
- DarkPrincess74, on 08/12/2008, -0/+7Yep but you have to realize that there are a lot of people out there with bad taste in movies and they go like 3 times a year and then only when everyone else really likes a movie. They go to see movies like titanic, forest gump, batman. It doesn't mean any of these movies are good just that a lot of people ended up going to see them. Some of those people vote for movies on imdb, unfortunately.
I'm more irritated that when the movie industry ranks movies by sales of all time they don't count inflation or ticket prices. A lot of times there are stories about some movie like the dark knight being of the best of all time in ticket sales but really it's not close to the top 5. - aps234, on 08/12/2008, -5/+11#3 is still too high in my opinion. I think it belongs in the top 20, but not the top 3 or even top 10 for that matter.
- MikeSetera, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6I don't think diggers know much about imdb.
It already has 220,000 votes. It's not falling much more. It's gonna stay in the top 10 for a long time. - killtherebel, on 08/12/2008, -6/+12It doesnt deserve to be in the top 20 even. It was a really good film but come on. It's not a cinematic masterpiece. There is nothing ground breaking about the cinematography, character development, editing, acting, or anything else. It's just a really good action flick.
- naszaklasa, on 08/12/2008, -6/+12Sorry to disappoint Dark Knight fans, but it wasn't the greatest & did not get 10/10 when I voted on IMDB.
Joker character was awesome but rate does not reflect only one character. - EtherGnat, on 08/12/2008, -1/+7"The fanboys tried, succeeded for a while but alas, they couldn't keep it forever."
It's not like it was a coordinated conspiracy. Every movie like that drops over time--I remember Return of the King was briefly #1 as well. People that are enthusiastic about a movie tend to see it when it first comes out, and they're more likely to give it a high score.
IMDB does attempt to minimize fanboyism by only counting votes from regular contributors towards its top 100 list. - mk3k, on 08/12/2008, -2/+8Yea the overhype made me expect too much of the film.
- banmaster, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6Seek help.
- BlackJackJester, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5the only movie I'd rate higher is Army of Darkness and possibly Predator....but I'm no film critic.
- crowbar77, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5I actually still prefer the first one, it felt much more gritty and real. Two face just ruined it for me.
- BobNoxious211, on 08/12/2008, -5/+9Good, but......
(Nominated for 7 Oscars. Didn't win any.)
Greatest of all time?!?
So much for popular opinion.
Some folks think 2 Fast 2 Furious was a great film. - t3hmyth, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4Uh...Um... I mean... ***** THE RIAA! Yeah....
- brettmurf, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4It is all about Tokyo Drift, man. Get with the times.
- impedance101, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4I just hope that it beats that piece of ***** Titanc in terms of money.
- VinnieDaMac, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5The Dark Knight is a great movie, but it is one of the best movies of all time? I don't think so. I suspect TDK to drop further down as time goes on.
- alexforcefive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4That, and tenacious d in the pick of destiny, right?
...just me, then? - Cenobite, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5That's exactly my argument, though. Rating a movie (at least on IMDB) is a subjective thing. It's not meant to be a clinical evaluation of the movie's merits, but an aggregate of popular opinion. As soon as you try to turn it into a science, you're implying that you're in a position of knowing enough about cinema to evaluate a film fairly and completely. Maybe you do. For all I know you are a professional filmmaker or critic. I don't, though, so I can only rate a film according to what little I know about the movie making process and - most importantly - according to how much I enjoy it. If IMDB only wanted a movie to be rated according to professional criteria, then their fundamental mistake was allowing anybody other than professional critics to rate films. But then again, that's what Rotten Tomatoes is for, isn't it?
The other issue I have is that people tend to dictate how you're supposed to rate movie on IMDB. I've given a number of films 10. Films that I honestly enjoyed immensely. I take exception to being accused of fanboyism, diminishing the system, etc. purely because the way I choose to rate films disagrees with your personal views on what - I remind you - is a public site.
"When you give the movie a 10 you're saying no better movie has ever been made."
If I extend that line of reasoning, we reach a point where we can award NO movie a 10. The reason for this is because we can't be sure if a better film will one day be made. If I wanted to rate The Exorcist (a personal favourite) as a 10, I'd have to stop myself and ask: "What if a better film exists that I haven't yet seen? What if five years from now a better film is released? Surely if this happens the integrity of the rating system will be diminished if I rate a 10 now!" I don't think IMDB would have given us the option to rate a film a 10 or a 0 if we weren't logically allowed to use it. And I'd rather be told when and how to use those ratings by IMDB than by indignant strangers on the Internet.
When I personally give a film a 10 I'm not implying that no better movie has been made. I don't see myself as being knowledgeable enough about films to say that one is objectively better than another. I am, however, saying that I have not enjoyed another film more. It's easy for me to say that I enjoyed The Godfather, The Dark Knight and The Shining all equally, albeit in different ways, but none ever better. Therefore, I rate it a 10. - jmpeagle, on 08/12/2008, -4/+8this is the most underrated movie of all time
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274518/ - Galaxylander, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4ssstonebraker, you're just... wrong. There's a line where something stops being an opinion and starts just being incorrect. Shawshank redemption is one of the greatest movies ever made with an important and engaging story. Going by your logic, every movie could be like that.
Let's pick a random one, how about The Incredibles?
"Oh no, there's a bad guy!"
2 hours of filler.
"Yay! We've defeated the bad guy!"
See? You're... wrong! - Wiini, on 08/12/2008, -9/+13YOU WANNA GET NUTS!? LET'S GET NUTS!
- poprocksandsoda, on 08/12/2008, -2/+6The 8,000 plus people voting it a 1 to get it out of the top 10 are obviously abusing the system. I can understand someone seeing it as a 5 based on their own view of the movie, but a 1?
