- indy500fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24It will be nice to have, but I would much rather have a sequel.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18> Cant understand why damned Fox canceled this show.
Apparently at the time Firefly was being broadcast, a million-dollar per episode production budget for a TV show was unheard-of, but I guess Joss Whedon had enough pull to make a go of it. Fox got very nervous about that kind of investment (despite Whedon's track record on TV) and sabotaged the show by pre-empting it at the drop of a hat, changing its time slot almost at random, running the episodes out of order (never even ran the damn pilot until the very end!) and failing to air some episodes. Even with all that, the show still built a smallish following, but Fox used the lack of audience numbers as an excuse to axe the show and free itself of its big budget demands.
BTW, I'm not making this up, if it sound like tinfoil-hat fodder. This is all documented on various Firefly sites. It explains why Whedon has sworn that he will never work with Fox again. - OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16You know,
I'd usually agree - I own DVD's that I've never watched with the commentaries running because they bore the hell out of me. Serenity is one of the few disks that I've actually watched the commentaries, the special additional materials, etc. The cast for the movie is unusually talented, and very entertaining in interviews, etc, which would suggest that they'd be pretty gorram funny on a commentary as well.
I'm a Browncoat, so I'm admittedly biased, but then almost everyone who will be buying the special edition secnd release of this will meet that description as well. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Also, Serenity made a cameo on BSG.

Two comments in case you have different opinions on both.
Cant understand why damned Fox canceled this show.
Everybody who watched it absolutely loved it! - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14No, you won't, you're addicted, just like the rest of us.
- krabat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Usually I am pissed when things like this are announced after I already own a previous edition of a movie, but Serenity deserves my money AT LEAST twice, if not more.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Shiny
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12In general, I'm not prone to movie fanaticism, but Firefly and Serenity are just stunningly good and I'm not even remotely ashamed to say I'm freakishly in love with all of it. I'll definitely have to resist the urge to camp out overnight to be first in line for a copy. :^)
What's cool about this is that it confirms what many of us on the Firefly discussion forums have suspected--that the film is indeed turning a profit now. Serenity's box office take (which *almost* covered its production costs) coupled with the consistently good DVD sales (Serenity and the Firefly box set haven't left Amazon's top 100 since it came out) have made a sequel or some kind of continuation of Serenity a very real possiblity. Hopefully this special edition sells well enough to make that a sure thing. - rig0rmortis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Didn't he only say it once?
- indy500fan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13A special edition DVD of Serenity is coming out. I'm not sure what could be misunderstood.
- goldfenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Someday I'll stop buying dvds on release and wait for the inevitable special editions.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hideous? It was supposed to be a folk song about the war at Serenity Valley, the one Mal and Zoe fought in. Add in all the muliticultural music elements and some western twang to it and you have what Firefly was all about, all wrapped up in a short theme song. I heard John C. Dvorak's comments about the theme song on TWIT and, as usual, he is off his nut. The theme song fit Firefly perfectly.
- UnstableMind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I was a huge trekkie and then comes BSG, which I like more than Trek...Then I saw the movie Serenity, not knowing it was based on a tv series. A year and a half later I was in Barnes and Noble and saw the Firefly series on DVD set and noticed that the characters were similiar to the movie Serenity. I asked the dude at the counter about it and he went into all this detail about how and why it was discontinued due to out of order playing, etc... Anyway I bought it and my wife and I both fell in love with the series. I will unquestionably trade both BSG and Trek to have Firefly back, and that is saying alot for anyone that knows me. Hands down, best original idea and filming yet. Bring Firefly back.
Added Note: I already own movie and DVD set, will buy the special edition to support it.. - IceBurrg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Screw the sequel. I want the TV series back.
- ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Firefly/Serenity always gets a digg.
- NekoFever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8God, this'll be the fourth time I've bought this movie in an effort to skew the figures and make a sequel/second season more likely. Original region 1 release, Australian limited tin edition, and the HD DVD. I can't stop myself.
- Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Straight from the big guy's mouth minus the blogspam:
"Yes, fanlings, there is going to be a 2 disc 'Special Edition' released this summer. You know why? 'Cause the 1 disc 'Normal Edition' has sold so well -- so maybe a little self-back-patting is in order for you guys. Way to keep her in the air.
It's too early to be sure what the Special Edition will contain, but here are some things we're going for:
NEW KEY ART.
Cast commentary -- assuming I can get a decent number of them in one room. They're very busy people, I'm happy to say.
NEW KEY ART.
The region 4 goodies, obviously.
The Tam Sessions.
KEY NEW ART.
New Yub Yub, and Greedo shoots first. So does that kid outside the trading station, the pilot who destroyed Haven, and Kaylee. And Richard Dreyfuss goes INSIDE the mothership.
KEW RAT YEN.
An alternate ending, if you turn it off early.
Proof of the existence of a benevolent higher power -- uh, I mean, new key art.
Mice.
And honestly, what more do you want? Don't answer that, I already know and it's unseemly. But I'm pretty excited here. Back to work, -j.
Take my Yub,
Take Yub Yub,
Yub Yub tak the Yub from Meee...dichlorians....

i can't wait. :) - SPThom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How many 'CDs' have cast commentary anyhow? Usually I think it's DVDs that have that feature. And for ordinary movies, they tend to be boring, but for fan favorites, they tend to *rock*.
- arktos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Farscape was definately a great show. Better than Firefly? The world may never know. Firefly got axed too early. At least Farscape was allowed to run (almost) its course. And it got to wrap up with a 2 part mini series.
- TheSatan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wheedon....?
- TheJuggernaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I geek out over one (and only one) thing, and that's Firefly. I normally hate the whole "commentary track" thing, but I'd gladly plunk down triple the cost of this DVD to have the whole cast in the same room again, riffing off of each other in the movie's background.
Oh, and my gratuitous plug to my crappy, home-brewed Firefly RPG tips-based site: http://www.awtry.com/rpg
(You can digg it down for being 'blogspam' if you want, but I figure Firefly fans might find something of use there. Just showin' the Serenity love. Your call.) - Portwineboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What kind of sick person would steal your copy of Serenity?
This is the kind of ***** they should use Guantanamo for. - TheJuggernaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh, well; John C. Dvorak, then.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ElWhapo
You sir, are a bastard. Leave digg while you can. - MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Enterprise was a bad theme song because it was a Star Trek series. If it hadn't been for that, people wouldn't have complained as much.
Firefly, while having a somewhat more monotonous song than I would've liked, does work well for the series. But it's all subjective, anyway. - rooster1056, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dear Diary,
Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy...
Today Fox's Network Execs were kidnapped by hill folk, never to be seen again.
It was the best day ever.
Shameless self plug for my list of Firefly/Serenity links:
rooster1056.stumbleupon.com (if they get the site back up and running today) - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ahhh damn it! I just bought a new copy after someone stole the original! Oh well, I'll be happy to have them both on my shelf.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ST: TNG costed about $1 million/ep
Same with BSG: TOS and a few other shows...
Cant understand why it costed $1 million/ ep.
They reused sets, and other shows have comparable SFX to Firefly with smaller budgets... - Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Surprised this hadn't been dugg earlier, news is about a week old.
- rooster1056, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey Juggernaut,
Thanks for adding the link!!
You have an excellent site and the graphics are very professional.
I know nothing about how to play rpgs, but but your site may have just prompted me to want to learn.
Also, do you have any rules for TallCard?
I will be adding the link to your server as soon as stumbleupon gets back online after maintenance.
Thanks again,
Rooster - DirtyBrowncoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm obviously a fan. Very cool.

- EdwardsNH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sorry, but I have to agree. Farscape was miles better than this show.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1A million per episode? Does anyone know what the avg. show costs to produce? I know that BSG back in the 70's was costing about that. But I'm wondering how FX rich shows like eUreka, S.G.A., and shows with high paid stars manage to keep under that number.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Gorram Browncoats...
Calling us purple bellies.
WHO WON THE WAR??
Thats right...
Gorram Independents.... - rig0rmortis, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I never caught on and I didn't like it, maybe there is something wrong with me?
- ionbattle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Wiidon...?
- ElWhapo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Even though I loved FF and Serenity. I am pretty sure that I won't buy the SE dvd. Besides, everyone knows Farscape was a much better show at the time, and after wards.
- HeyGabe, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1The reason firefly was canceled was because of that hideous theme song. Same with Enterprise. Digg me down all you want. John C. Dvorak agrees with me.
- majeo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Trying a tad too hard there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2buried for saying it will be awesome when cast commentary is hte most boring feature on any CD, let alone a Serenity one.
- NoStoppingUs, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2i wish i understood a ***** thing in this article.
- xsuite, on 10/12/2007, -61/+2In other news, toymaker, Fischer Price, has just finished development on its new line of adult toys. The flagship item from the series is called the Tease n' Squeeze. It consists of breast implants that double as squeaky toys.
Sources say that the product had a hard time passing the FDA's requirements for body implants because men would die from emaciation because they would play with their wife's Tease n' Squeeze 24/7.
It is reported that Fischer price is pllaning to release the Tease n' Squeeze as part of a breast cancer fundraiser called 'Grope For Hope.' 50% of all monies made from the implants will go to breast cancer research.
