- superjenn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+190That's just great. You know what would be extra-interesting? If, in the MPAA's infinite wisdom, every other movie ever made that ever had even so much as a wispy curl of smoking in it, were retroactively rated R. Oh! Like 101 Dalmations! Yeah, that would be awesome.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+174Violence, killing, rape, rotting corpse = OK for broadcast TV.
Smoking a Marboro = Rated R.
Boobs = Rated R
Bush = Rated R
***** me. - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+110In the edited version Cruella Deville has a flashlight between her fingers.
The fact is most of these "children's" movies put cigarettes in the mouths of the bad guys. Also, 22% of the US smokes. It's not like kids aren't going to see people smoking in their normal lives. Kids are curious, they are also clever. If you try to hide something they will find out about it on their own, and when they do, they will be even more excited and interested in it. If after educating kids about the dangers of smoking they still grow up to be smokers, you can't blame movies, corporations, or culture . . . adults make choices that are bad for their health every day. People, not Harvard or the MPAA, need to make decisions about how they live their own lives. - mikelieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53Nah, you're missing the point. It'll seem 5x cooler now, if all you see it in are the "R" flicks which are for Adults... ( Which are different from Adult Movies, btw... )
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+57any movie with midgets should be rated R.I mean really those guys are creepy.
- Battleloser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47Ya! And all movie characters should exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet!
- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!!
- Crimsoneer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45And you know what? How about we do that same with drinking. From now on, movie characters must only drink water. And weapons at that...from now on, James Bond shall be armed with a large toothpick.
- look4alec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43And they should ID everyone who goes to see a movie with drinking in it to make sure they are 21! If they don't, the little kids will forget everything they knew about smoking and drinking before they saw the movie and just accept it as the norm. No bar scenes, no beers.
You must be 18 to see Thank You For Smoking! LOL - spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Yes, because that's going to stop children from seeing smoking everywhere else.
What idiots... from Harvard? - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39and why the hell don't their knees bend?!
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33@lemon67:
Yeah, but just because it deters smoking doesn't mean it's right. Depicting all smokers as evil in children's movies is no better than depicting all Muslims as evil in children's movies. Hatred and intolerance is bad even if it's good for your health. - KingMoses, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Reckless driving kills more people than smoking. We ought to restrict any movies with speeding!

Actually, in Thank You for Smoking not one character is actually seen smoking, it was intentional. - starf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Have you seen Jesus Camp?
There's this fat lady preaching that Harry Potter should be put to death, like he's a real person.
I don't think they understand the concept of fiction. - Spanktacular, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28America, where protecting children from really dangerous things like guns, poor education, abusive parents, and hurricane Katrina is job #99! Music, movies, video games and cartoons are the greatest evil facing America's youth. So says the MPAA and The Overprotective Mothers of America!
Seriously, what the ***** has happened to this country that we're more afraid of fictions than realities? - NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23That's just dumb, educate the kids watching, that's how to solve the problem, not stopping smoking in movies entirely.
- SebG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20How stupid can they get?
I have seen so many movies as a child and had smokers in them, yet im 23 and i dont smoke. Why do those people think that everybody is influenced by movies/games/tv? - john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23While I disagree with this, it's stupid to associate one professor's opinion about smoking in movies with the entire school of Harvard.. Poor choice of title.
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19You'll find from watching R-rated movies that cigarettes aren't just for smoking . . . they're for igniting explosives too!
- sneed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20No, he graduated from Yale. At least get your facts straight.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Some center of education, I've passed more learned things on the toilet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17You know who else was VERY anti-smoking?
Hitler.
Hmm... - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Ratings systems should tell us what to expect in a movie, not for whom they think it is appropriate.
- Alchemeron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Nanny state at it again.
- pyrotix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14If I were Harvard I would have said to discontinue the movie rating system
- lemon67, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19@nixonrichard, I totally agree, its almost better that in a movie like 101 dalmatians they have smoking because then kids will associate it with evil or the enemy you know, its almost more of a deterrent.
- slearwig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12***** censorship.
- PapaZit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Better take anything that is "wrong" out of films that way children don't do them. Just leave rainbows and flowers.
- Sambone67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It's the American way, blame someone or something else for your problems instead of looking in the mirror.
Yes, I'm an American and a lot of us still have a brain instead of a waistline. - Dzerzhinsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This is only going to make smoking more cool for adolescents.
- ichbinladen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Dumbest idea ever.
- Revan01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Free advertising for Steel Foundries??!!?!
- kingyubba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8***** prohibition!
(late for the party?) - DeathBorn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15This assumes that all smoking in movies is sponsored by cigarette companies, and not a creative decision. I agree that it should only be used when absolutely necessary, but if you want to convey that a character doesn't care about themselves or something else, then why shouldn't they be allowed to smoke. It's the kids' fault that they try to smoke, not the movie. They should have been better-educated.
- Revan01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9We should ban fat people
- kinghajj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8As George Carlin said, "Kids don't smoke because a camel in sunglasses tell them. They smoke for the same reasons as adults: it relieves anxiety and depression. *****, you'd be depressed to if you had these yuppie parents..."
Stopping kids from seeing smoking won't stop some from deciding to smoke. - daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9More like "She" doesn't understand the difference between fact and fiction. One fat lady does not speak on behalf of the entire country. The problem is with the people who don't think we can make decisions as to what is good or bad for us ourselves. When these people get in power this kind of thing happens.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Some people are sooooooo smart that they are just plain stupid Thankyou Harvard for proving that
- ashwin100, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Actually I think spyrochaete is right.
There are approx 5.4 million deaths per year that are caused by tobacco - source: http://www.inforesearchlab.com/smokingdeaths.chtml
There are approx 1.2 million deaths per year that are caused by road accidents - source: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2004/pr24/en/ - blackmassacer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I am sick of people forcing their morality on to other people!
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So what are they supposed to do when the Metal Gear movie comes out? Yeah, didn't think that one through.
- Sambone67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6With that reasoning you'd have to ban everything. Every car, building or piece of clothing. It's ALL advertising when you get down to it.
- skoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6smoking is a choice, kids.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@sneed

"After obtaining an MBA from Harvard University (Bush is the only U.S. President to serve holding a Master of Business Administration degree[14]), Bush entered the oil industry in Texas..."
He did go to Yale. But he ALSO attended Harvard. Next time, get your facts straight. - lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My parents kept me sheltered from the world until I turned 18. Now, who is this person named "gun" that you speak of?
- SebG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This country (US) will soon be like in the movie Demolition man, when you say ***** it will give you a $200 ticket. Everything has to be politically correct so nobody gets offended, everything has to be sugar coated....
- maexus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7***** THE RIAA
.. wait what? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7And why ask Harvard? Are they the foremost authority on movies, people, influences, attitudes, etc?
You wouldn't believe how many Disney movies have smoking in them.
Or maybe Harvard is just ***** with the MPAA. -
