Harrison Ford Ad-Libbed Scenes in ‘Raiders’ & ‘Empire’
geeksofdoom.com — Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is one of this summers most highly anticipated movies. But all the focus is on the ageing star of the film, Harrison Ford, and recent interviews have once again shone light on his ability to adlib some of history’s greatest and most recognizable cinematic lines.

- moush, on 05/16/2008, -4/+20Too bad they had to include Shia LaBeouf, he could single-handedly ruin the movie in my opinion.
- funkytaco, on 05/16/2008, -1/+10no no no no no no no no no

They should try to send him to rehab. I'd like to hear what he'd say to that.- RJNavarrete, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5His vocabulary his damn impressive. I mean... how many different ways can you say "no?"
- wjackson, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1Oh come on. Shia was great in.....Even Stevens?
....
Ok fine. His "sister" in the show was cute, though. http://christyromano.com/- nallelcm, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1you mean little Ms. Big Teeth? hells no

- unreg, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2But I didn't see the "OMG Top Ten Things The New Comment System Does!!" submission.
- GiggleStick, on 05/16/2008, -0/+8Thing #1 is, it doesn't make my browser come to a halt and warn me about slow running scripts. That's the best thing.
- unreg, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2But I didn't see the "OMG Top Ten Things The New Comment System Does!!" submission.
- bjs3171, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2your comment for the new comment system makes no sense. Either what? It is a new system. there aren't two to choose from. It's only one way. and what the hell does this supposed choice between new comment systems, that doesn't exist, have to do with Harrison Ford?
- TheBigBrother, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3"I Know"
- jaxomlotus, on 05/16/2008, -2/+16We're going to be getting a lot of these new comment comments. :)
- tjClassic82, on 05/16/2008, -6/+20Im not the biggest fan of the series... but this will definitly be a hit. How can it not? With those 3, no matter what the storyline was it would end up being a classic more than likely.
- Bukowsky, on 05/16/2008, -4/+16I know I'm going to get dugg down for saying this... but I have to disagree. I am a BIG fan of the Indiana Jones series, but I think it was a big mistake to make this 4th movie. A 65 year old Indiana Jones, just doesn't have the appeal to me... at least not like Indy used too.
Don't get me wrong, it's gonna be a big hit and pull in alot of money at the box office, but I personally don't think it's gonna live up to the hype.... I'm gonna go see it though.- ADIDAS247, on 05/16/2008, -1/+13I am a fan too, but I would rather have a 4th then have nothing at all.
- Bukowsky, on 05/16/2008, -2/+6even at the risk of tarnishing the Indiana Jones series?
- RealmDown, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3No risk, no gain.
- FanofFilm, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4even if the 4th ended with him fighting aliens like was originally written?
- Bukowsky, on 05/16/2008, -2/+6even at the risk of tarnishing the Indiana Jones series?
- unreg, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7Depends on how they did it.
Rocky Balboa - Very nicely done, wrapped up the series well
Alien 4 - Somebody should have been shot for that piece of putrid puss.- senatorpjt, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Another thing though - Alien 4 didn't ruin the series, it was just forgotten.
- unreg, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1I miss the point. A bad sequel doesn't imping upon the original. Look at the success of the Star Trek movies, odd/even.
- krakelohm, on 05/16/2008, -2/+4What was your appeal before he was 65? Mine is action and adventure and a fun story. Sorry I am not in it to see half naked dudes.
- IllBeBack, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Just watching the various trailers for the 4th one, I'm also worried that it won't be able to live up to the originals. I hope I'm wrong about it.
- ADIDAS247, on 05/16/2008, -1/+13I am a fan too, but I would rather have a 4th then have nothing at all.
- methos75, on 05/17/2008, -0/+0I remember when the same was said of Star Wars.
- Bukowsky, on 05/16/2008, -4/+16I know I'm going to get dugg down for saying this... but I have to disagree. - spiritpilot, on 05/16/2008, -2/+22Harrison Ford is one of my very favorite actors. I'm so glad that he's still going strong. :)
- unreg, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4I'm gonna have to bust out my Indy jacket just to go to the theatre.
- moush, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1What about your hat?

- brundlefly76, on 05/17/2008, -2/+1I think his best piece of improvisation on any of his movies is when he put his dick in Carrie Fisher's mouth.
- unreg, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4I'm gonna have to bust out my Indy jacket just to go to the theatre.
- trujillonorte, on 05/16/2008, -2/+54It's not the years, it's the mileage. :)
- ToeCracker, on 05/16/2008, -6/+4This will be a smash kit at the Box office for sure. The old boy still has his mojo!
- xtinamo, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1ewwww..
- psogle, on 05/16/2008, -1/+32Ford = Indy. He is that character and it shows on screen
- SPThom, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2Actually I don't think he IS the character. Whenever I've seen him in interviews he seems really shy & reserved... Obviously fairly adventurous as he flies and, well, he IS an actor, but not the swashbuckling, larger than life hero he plays as Indy (and Han).
But he certainly GETS the character, perhaps better than anyone else involved. He understands Indiana's appeal, that it goes well beyond that of the pulp heroes Lucas and Speilberg sought to emulate. He understand's the character's humanity.- popfrogs, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2I dunno about your assessment. Remember, Lucas originally found him doing carpenter work (roofing) before he became Han Solo. I bet he was a hell of a guy to have a beer with back then.

- TGMD, on 05/16/2008, -3/+16Well duh... it certainly wasn't lucas
- festizian, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4I just wish Natalie Portman would have ad-libbed a little bit in Return of the Sith. "Anakin! You're breaking my heart!"
- newsfully, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3"From my point of view the Jedi are evil."
- TGMD, on 05/16/2008, -4/+2That's actually a decent line, it harkens back to Return of the Jedi
- newsfully, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Really, how's that? I thought this was the worst line of all the movies because it seemed condescending to the audience.
- newsfully, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3"From my point of view the Jedi are evil."
- Abomonog, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4Lucas represents the settings, story, and effects. All of which are just as much characters n that film as Ford was. But Ford is just special. He's got the mojo. He proved that in Star Wars.
- festizian, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4I just wish Natalie Portman would have ad-libbed a little bit in Return of the Sith. "Anakin! You're breaking my heart!"
- slashgeek, on 05/16/2008, -0/+86My favorite has always been shooting the swordsman. One of the best moments in any action movie, ever!
- zadadka, on 05/16/2008, -14/+9Also, that scene was ad-libbed.
It was originally scripted as an epic battle between bull whip and scimitar, but on the day, Ford was feeling rough, so he & Spielberg hatched the idea of how the scene actually ended up...only Ford, Spielberg & the swordsman knew the revised plan, so the enthusiastic cheers you hear when Ford nonchalantly guns him down, are for real.- blackbeardtron, on 05/16/2008, -0/+41It's seems almost as if YOU have just read the same article we all did... amazing!

- diggSJaustin, on 05/16/2008, -3/+3Wait, you're saying that George Lucas frigged with a classic movie in his Special Edition? I do not believe this could be true, sir!
- Blackforge, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2It's not just Lucas, remember the "restored" E.T.?
In the Lucas/Steven Spielberg Special Edition, the swordsman uses his walkie-talkie first..

- jedimasta, on 05/16/2008, -2/+6Don't know why people are digging you down. Not only is this old news, but ad-libbing is a part of every production. It's simply not news.

- Shakermaker, on 05/16/2008, -8/+17FTA: "literally born a day before my brother"
Wow, so he was LITERALLY born a day before your brother? Not figuratively born a day before your brother?- Lyianis, on 05/16/2008, -3/+3I would like to point out that actually IS the correct usage for that term. :P
Just though it was funny someone was grammer nazi'ing something thats being used correctly.- elhaf, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1Well, he did use it correctly, but the grammar nazi is pointing out that it was superfluous. No one says it figuratively, so no need to bother.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1I think age is referred to figuratively, "She's practically young enough to be your daughter," "It's like you were born yesterday." And in this case, a figurative comment could've been something like, "He's my brother's age." Obviously he wouldn't mean he was exactly his brother's age, just fairly close. Instead he wanted to assure us that, no, really, he's my brother's age minus a day.
It's not good writing but it's not superfluous.

- codyman, on 05/16/2008, -7/+9My favorite improvisation on set was when the sword master guy challenges him to a fight with his slick moves, then harrison ford just rolls his eyes and shoots him
- sedo1800, on 05/16/2008, -6/+1Mirror?
- authors, on 05/16/2008, -4/+5In its earliest incarnation, Lucas proposed an all-out alien flick called "Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men From Mars." Spielberg and Ford didn't like that idea, and it took more than a decade of wrangling to come up with a story all three could live with.
Ford and Aliens? How can this not be fun?- bjs3171, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1i hope that's a joke. "the saucer men from mars"? i know they're taking inspiration from 50s sci-fi, but come on.
- axell001, on 05/16/2008, -7/+1Doesn't everyone know this? I did.

- Vironex, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2Does it have to be news?

- Vironex, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2Does it have to be news?
- 0U8I2, on 05/16/2008, -1/+8I love finding out about non-scripted lines and scenarios. I'll bet there were plenty more ad-libs from Harrison Ford, since the characters he plays are so uniquely Harrison Ford, lol! I'm really looking forward to the fourth movie, I think it will be great. Oh, and for those of you who thinking "everybody knows this already" I have to disagree. Every teenager going to see Crystal Skull is not going to know this kind of information. They weren't even born when Last Crusade came out and they havent been watching these movies for twenty years like the rest of us. Not everything is really "old news" just I don't know, resurfaced news? Lighten up.
- bjs3171, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1you're right, not every 10-15 y/o knows these stories, and they should be repeated. but the author could have done some actual writing and delved deeper into the subject. i'm sure there are other Indy lines, or other Ford movies with great adlibs. He was in the Fugitive. He was in Blade Runner. He was in Schindler's List (no he wasn't). How about some adlibs from those?

Nuff' Said.- AlmostClever, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Wow. That totally sucked. It really, really sucked. You know that if the only interesting part of a short is that the main character is eating cereal with a fork, you've failed.
- cr4wl3r, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2WHAT THE ***** DID THAT P.O.S. HAVE TO DO WITH FORD OR INDY?

- Abomonog, on 05/16/2008, -1/+13This news is as old as the movies themselves. I remember the pre "Raiders" hype. Interviews with Ford and how they were given scenes where the script said to talk about this subject while doing this or that and nothing more. No lines at all in them. The acting in "Raiders" is some of the most natural feeling acting in film. This freedom to create dialog on the fly is probably what makes it feel so natural.
This gets my digg because even though this is no news to us older folk it's still kickass to remember the greatest ad lib movie of them all.- cgruber, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1I'll get off your lawn now.
- tm13lke, on 05/17/2008, -0/+0why were you on it in the first place?
- dchaffin, on 05/16/2008, -2/+2Is it really news that actors ad lib in films?!?! A lot of them do it a lot! It's called acting/being creative/spontaneous ... duh.
- NathanielJ, on 05/16/2008, -3/+3Congrats on another useless 'article' getting to the front page. I remember reading this crap on the IMDb trivia page... 5 years ago?
- lazydrumhead, on 05/16/2008, -1/+2and the intercom scene in star wars IV
- DeviantDragon, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4This is such blogspam. It's just a rewording of the original LA Times article with the extra information of Shia being born literally the day before the author's brother.
- neotrantor, on 05/16/2008, -3/+2the "I Know" line is something people laughed at? what the *****? isn't that the saddest part of the trillogy?
- petebot, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1The human torch was denied a bank loan.
- fuzzynyanko, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Adapting the lines probably did more for Ford than anything else. Directors like Spielburg and the dude that did Empire Strikes Back I think were really needed because the dialog in the first 4 episodes of Star Wars sounded like they were right from a book.
- BossKey, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5One of the reasons Episodes I-III lack the fun and charisma of IV-VI is that there is no Han Solo character...there's nobody making wisecracks, nobody calling BS on the other characters. It's a big reason I-III seem so unbearably serious and dead and by-the-numbers.
- bjs3171, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1that was...pointless. i'm sure there are scenes he's ad-libbed that everyone in the world DOESN'T know about. The Black Swordsman story is a good one, but, as you admitted, its' pretty common knowledge. you could have gone deeper.
- drmobutu, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2My favorite Indiana Jones line: "Nazis...I HATE these guys!"

- drmobutu, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1South America is crawling with Nazis...this could be the best Indiana Jones film, ever!
- Buzzbean, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Don't know if it was ad-libbed but I'm hoping to hear it in the new movie. You know some Nazi leaders ran to South America after the war.
- bjs3171, on 05/16/2008, -0/+6btw, in Crystal Skull, I hear Shia LaBeouf adlibbed the line "NONONONONONONONONONONO!!!", and it's incredible.
- lunatix, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1man, sadly i can see that happening. and though i will watch this movie, ugh, man that's gonna kill it for me.
- lpferris, on 05/16/2008, -5/+4Um, Mr. Ford is only 66. I think the term "ageing" is pretty disrespectful.
And technically, aren't we ALL "ageing"? Except for maybe Richard on LOST.- cgruber, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Yep let's cut the foreplay and just call him ***** old.
- mechagazoo15, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Yup, these are all pretty well known, but I think they're great just the same. Harrison Ford rocks, and that's all there is to it.
- jontalisman, on 05/16/2008, -4/+1Well, I could really care less if people bury my comments but thanks for the support.
- AzureRise, on 05/16/2008, -7/+3Just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, using Firefox 3 Beta 5 in Linux, and there's a new comment system! They all run smoothly and they all kick ass!
- smek2, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1And this has what to do with Indiana Jones? Nobody gives a ***** about your toy Ubuntu.
- AzureRise, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Actually I said that because this was the first time I saw the new comment system. I was talking about new stuff. And the new indiana jones is gonna suck because of Shya Lebouf.
