- deadbaby, on 01/13/2008, -5/+164My Mom and Dad would respond by saying "BluRay? Is that like an X-Ray? I got an X-Ray once when I broke my arm back in 72. Man that hurt. That was the year I saw the Stones play Providence. Providence is a nice town... I like those cobble stone streets. Anyway what were we talking about again?"
Point being, early adopters are techies who can handle this stuff or at least follow some instructions to do it. - fantasticFlan, on 01/13/2008, -1/+125The crocodile eats the bigger number.
- Nathrat, on 01/13/2008, -90/+212Blu-Ray has potential, but it's going to take too long to reach the mainstream. HD DVD is already at the quality and price that is ready for the mainstream. The average consumer is not going to be accepting of a glitchy format, no matter how much potential it has, all they know is they spent $400 on a blu-ray player and it doesn't work. I see alot of angry consumers in blu-ray's future.
- HenvY, on 01/13/2008, -21/+135Betamax players are also now on special offer - only $50 for a top spec player with 200 movies included!
- Nathrat, on 01/13/2008, -27/+138Now imagine your mom or dad has one of these, just tell them everything you just said and take a picture of the look on their faces.
- cadmiumpaint, on 01/13/2008, -13/+110title is stupid. anyone who has spent a dime on blu or HDDVD was basically paying to be a beta tester for multibillion dollar corporations. You wanted to have HD before anyone else, and you knew that there was no chance that 2 formats could coexist, and one had to die.
no body got "screwed" you just wasted your money to be the first kid on the block with a beta version of a new toy. - deadbaby, on 01/13/2008, -61/+156Sounds like FUD. Both Sony & Samsung have released firmware updates in the past for their BluRay players (they send you a disk or I imagine you could download it and burn it yourself) There's nothing stopping these older players from implementing new software features. The only concern might be BD-J as these older players may not have enough CPU power but even that is speculation. They are fairly powerful little boxes and Java VMs have become a lot more efficient.
- yoavoy, on 01/13/2008, -4/+85I can get quite a few bluray players for >$150
Did you mean < $150 ? - inactive, on 01/13/2008, -11/+86Who cares about bonus features, I just want to watch the movie.
- peestandingup, on 01/13/2008, -57/+131HD DVD was ready now, had cheap players & cheap media. Blu-Ray is still pretty expensive & has some more growing up to do. Shame that the studios didn't see it that way.
- Ineedanap, on 01/13/2008, -24/+84Sony has taken the Consumer out of this decision- they dont want another beta *****- By getting all the major studios to produce only in BluRay, it effectively takes the consumer out of the equation. If you want HD at home, you have only one real choice at this point.... so many titles will never make it to HD, whats the point??
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -24/+79If HD-DVD had won then we would be seeing posts attacking HD-DVD instead. Too funny.
- chaoswings, on 01/13/2008, -20/+73Of course the price of HD DVDs are dropping....there has been a major shift in the direction of blu-ray so it only makes sense that the price of HD DVDs would be dropping faster then blu-ray. The stores want to get rid of them as fast as they can
- djjuice, on 01/13/2008, -4/+55most players may be able to update to profile 1.1, but not to profile 2.0. over at http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9808376-1.html you can see the requirements of each profile version. at the very least 2.0 requires quite a but that first gen players just don't have
- codelogic, on 01/13/2008, -10/+57The only reason the prices of HD-DVD players is so low is because of Blu-Ray, you think they would be selling for $150 if they had no competition?
Also, new Blu-Ray discs WILL be compatible with older players i.e. they will still be able to watch the movie. What they MIGHT not be able to do (depending on the actual player) is watch PIP and experience the networked features. As far as watching the actual movie is concerned they are in the clear.
Finally, if you buy a $400 Blu-Ray player (PS3) instead of a $600 standalone one, you're future proof as far Blu-Ray is concerned since PS3 will be supporting profile 2.0.
@peestandingup
"it happened with music"
If you're referring to DVD-A and SACD, that's different because the leap in quality from going 2.0 to 5.1 on most audio systems where CDs are generally played (cars, boomboxes, portable CD players, etc) where there is generally no 5.1 option, is unnoticeable. On the other hand, HDTVs are already mainstream and anyone who has compared 480i to 1080p will tell you that there is a gigantic leap in quality (and yes DVD video is interlaced, that's why there are so many progressive players). Lot of people want to watch movies in HD today, they're not going to wait for digital distribution to go mainstream. - inactive, on 01/13/2008, -11/+58I don't think my parents care about anything that BD 2.0 offers, and if they did, they would know how to burn a CD or request one....
- thisissami, on 01/13/2008, -7/+49sales this big for HD-DVDs probably means that amazon is getting rid of it's stock...
- rtoo, on 01/13/2008, -7/+49One of the big issues right now is some of the current Blu-Ray players don't play all of the Blu-Ray movies. I own a Sony Blu-Ray player and I bought "3:10 to Yuma" the other day, the thing wouldn't even load. So now I have to either burn the latest firmware to a cd and then load it into the player (takes 30 minutes), or order a CD from Sony with the latest firmware, which takes 4-6 weeks to get. If I could make one recommendation to those considering Blu-Ray, make sure it has an internet connection so you can do the updates via the web.
- MasterPlayer, on 01/13/2008, -3/+44Most early adopters are probably very adept with technology.
- peestandingup, on 01/13/2008, -11/+50Exactly. Nobody has won jack ***** yet until the consumers say so. Its quite possible DVD will stick around long enough until digital distribution becomes mainstream.
Dont laugh, it happened with music. - wush, on 01/13/2008, -2/+35The DRM system is sequencing your genome from the fingerprint on the disc
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -10/+42Sad to say i have put my hd dvd drive and movies on ebay, in hopes of getting most of my money back before the rest of the world that isn't tech savy finds out that HD DVD has been dropped by most labels.
- masfenix, on 01/13/2008, -11/+40UNLESS you have a ps3.
you can also do other great things with it such as: [insert great things here, for ex play mgs] - frontporsche, on 01/13/2008, -2/+30Would anyone like to buy my LaserDisc player?
- IkeMavent, on 01/13/2008, -57/+84Prices DROP!?!? OMGOOSE WE'RE GETTING SCREWED!!!! It's simple supply and demand folks, nobody wants HD-DVD anymore because it's a dead format. When nobody wants something, the price for those few who do, goes way down
- lostarchitect, on 01/13/2008, -10/+36i got a samsung blu-ray player with 5 free movies from amazon for $269. the prices are coming down.
- codelogic, on 01/13/2008, -2/+27"HD movies are typcially from 5 to 10GB."
Yes, after they are RE-ENCODED at a lower quality by rippers. If you rip a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD it will be close to 40GB. - dlcarter, on 01/13/2008, -7/+30It's supply and demand. The supply of DVD players now is huge, and most people who want one already have one, so there's less demand and greater supply, meaning cheap DVD players. Entry level economics.
- zephyrxero, on 01/13/2008, -0/+22Exactly... "early adopters" are not getting screwed....this is just part of being an early adopter, lol. Most early adopters end up having to rebuy their products over again a few years later.... Look at all the people who spent thousands of dollars to get a 720p LCD/plasma 5 years ago.... if they haven't already, those same folks will be buying another HDTV with full 1080p support at some point down the road, and thanks to ebay and such now at least they won't be losing all their money...
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -4/+26Luckily it will play all movies still, so they can still do what they intended to do when they bought the player!
- puto, on 01/13/2008, -15/+35never forget the rootkits
- sjbdallas, on 01/13/2008, -0/+20My kid didn't understand that reference when I tried that on him. They must have stopped using that model at some point in school but I still remember it that way.
- InspectorGadget, on 01/13/2008, -6/+25They already are more than $150.
- incredibilistic, on 01/13/2008, -1/+20Try telling your mom and dad that they have to download ALL of their content from the internet. My mother still has trouble trying to figure out where her downloaded attachments go.
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -1/+20Look, the players will still play BD Live/BD 2.0 movies perfectly. They just might not be able to use some of the features.
- thejokell, on 01/13/2008, -3/+22The A3 comes with 300 and the Bourne Identity in the box, so it's 7 free movies.
- HappyScrappy, on 01/13/2008, -4/+2330 minutes? My God that's horrible! That's perhaps twice as long as it would take to bitch about it on the internet.
I owned a first-gen DVD player, and they weren't upgradeable at all. When the Matrix came around, many Pansonic owners were left with players that couldn't play it without sending it in for a physical firmware upgrade. - helius, on 01/13/2008, -1/+19Agreed. Seriously, the OP needs to get over himself. I bet I could dig up a betamax player or 8-track tape player for pretty cheap. Buried for complete lameness.
- Bootes, on 01/13/2008, -0/+17Cast Away Blu Ray 1080p AVC DTS HD 5.1 44.32GB
Resident Evil Blu-Ray 1080p AVC TrueHD 5.1 44.15GB
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (Remastered, corrected framing issue) 1080 H.264 PCM 5.1 42.44GB
The Legend of Zorro Blu-Ray 1080p AVC/TrueHD5.1 41.90GB
Mr and Mrs Smith H264 1080p DTS-HD MA blu-ray BD+ PerfectionHD 31.78GB - michaelb1, on 01/13/2008, -9/+26Of course HD-DVD is on sale. They are trying to get rid of them becuase Blu Ray won. i feel bad for the ignorant consumers that buy these.
- codelogic, on 01/13/2008, -1/+17What makes you think mom and dad would even care about these extra features? They would still be able to watch movies, which is probably why they bought the player in the first place. If the actually care about PIP and the networking features then they are probably knowledgeable enough to browse the Internet or make a tech support call.
- CReyes4182, on 01/13/2008, -8/+24Some of you HD-DVD fanatics are delusional. The sooner the hd format wars end the better. The reason the prices kept dropping is because they wanted to catch up to blu-ray but it didn't happen. Now its a liquidation sale. Booo hooo I bought the wrong format and now I want to delay the inevitable. Give up already its over.. its done.. Its just getting pathetic now.
- carbonetc, on 01/13/2008, -3/+18It holds more stuff. All consumer and business related concerns taken into account, that's the only superiority I'd concede to.
- Jugalator, on 01/13/2008, -1/+16Finally someone who shares my opinion in this thread. I don't get this "profile support" talk... Picture in picture? Who cares! I *never* missed that feature on my DVD's. When I watch a movie, I put it in my player, press "Start" on the menu, and watch. Am I really that unusual? Internet connectivity? If I want online material about the movie, I browse the web! Heck, something on a good fansite is probably even more in depth than what was included by the movie company.
- plbland, on 01/13/2008, -0/+15Everyone loves the underdog;
...and quite a few hate Sony... - eth3l, on 01/13/2008, -1/+15Sorry dude, even Sony has said the only future proof Blu-ray player to buy is the PS3
- fantasticFlan, on 01/13/2008, -3/+17Hey, 6 months ago called, he's concerned about your drinking.
- zzz@tkz, on 01/13/2008, -3/+17[insert repetitive comment on how you used the wrong sign here]
- kingfoot, on 01/13/2008, -2/+16one thing people arent understanding with this is, the movies will still play just fine. it's the extras that you wont get, or that extra movie playing stuff over the internet (which is still new and wont be a must have yet) so most consumers that aren't technically inclined, probably wont care. much at all.
- merwin, on 01/13/2008, -0/+14That's how I learned it 20 years ago... There was even a little game on the Apple II with crocodiles eating the numbers. That was the coolest ***** ever back then.
