- esbern1, on 12/21/2007, -4/+97hell yes. pan's labyrinth was outstanding. they couldn't find a better replacement for jackson. i mean, they're even the same shape.
- MrBound, on 12/21/2007, -1/+55I feel good about this man being in the running. Pan's Labyrinth had a moving, dark style that I think would go great with Tolkien.
- Syric, on 12/21/2007, -0/+42That's actually the best idea after Jackson. It's sure 10x better than Sam Raimi, ugh.
- rebotfc, on 12/21/2007, -0/+40If it wasn't Jackson this is about the only other guy I would trust with the adaptation.
- markperia, on 12/21/2007, -0/+36If that's true then we needn't worry. Id gladly welcome him in the director's chair.
- fkr3, on 12/21/2007, -1/+21The only question is how will Guillermo work it in so someone (I'm looking at you Bilbo) gets beaten to death with a wine bottle??
- cnot3, on 12/21/2007, -2/+17IDK, I was hoping Michael Bay would get the part. But I guess they wouldn't let him have the creative freedom to use explosions in every scene.
- thomasprebble, on 12/21/2007, -0/+12Jackson is actually quite slim now.
- Makisupa, on 12/21/2007, -0/+12If you liked Pan's Labyrinth, make sure you check out The Devil's Backbone. It is a fantastic film.
- GreyICE, on 12/21/2007, -6/+17Wow. I mean Peter Jackson is a competent director, but he never has managed to achieve true genius status. He's very good, but he doesn't have that spark. Del Toro does. It will be interesting to see someone with Del Toro's spark have his work reviewed by someone like Peter Jackson, who pays amazing attention to detail, and is very good about syncing up artistic elements to near perfection. The resulting movie could be very, very good (which would fit well with the books, where I feel the hobbit was many times better than the very pretentious, very overdone LoTR Trilogy (Tom Bombadil indeed...).
- KyjL, on 12/21/2007, -1/+12I love muffins
- Sornos, on 12/21/2007, -0/+10I look forward to see Del Torro's interpretation of Smaug. As well as the Lonely Mountain.
- TheZorch, on 12/21/2007, -2/+11I have very high hopes for this movie. Please don't use Sam Raimi. He's a good horror director but if he does the Hobbit I'm afraid it'll suffer from Xena-Hercules Syndrome.
- NichowA, on 12/21/2007, -1/+10Peter Jackson's last three films all being in the top 30 on the IMDB top 250 might lead some to disagree with you about him lacking this "spark." You may not like the LOTR trilogy, but you're in a clear minority.
- Vapor17, on 12/21/2007, -0/+8But does he wear shoes?
- dn11, on 12/21/2007, -1/+8if you're putting it that way i would call the story of LOTR totally laughable. "Sexually ambiguous midget gets evil ring, must walk very far to throw ring in hole... emo ensues - with wizards and warriors hugging and singing a lot".... and oh yeah, I liked LOTR BTW
- esbern1, on 12/21/2007, -0/+7you must've missed spiderman 3....
- Tearlock, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6Robert Rodriguez!!!! So we can see Bilbo flying through doorways blasting the heads off zombie with his gun leg.
- supremespleen, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6That would be awesome. Guillermo has a good eye for stuff like this.
- venom8599, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6You lost me at "the best elements of Hellboy."
- txtphile, on 12/21/2007, -1/+7you must've missed spiderman 2!
- Swarms, on 12/21/2007, -4/+10. . . In case you haven't heard, Jackson is going to produce, apparently.
- klethron, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5Oh, Guillermo del Toro, nice. I hope HellBoy makes an appearance.
- DrMonkeyLove, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5"I can't tell the difference."
- cretin, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5This kind of sucks, but hear me out. Del Toro's personal masterpiece was always going to be "At the Mountains of Madness", which would be the first HP Lovecraft film worth a damn. He once was quoted (in Fangoria) as saying that "Mountains" was going to be his own "Fellowship of the Ring". Production of that has been pushed back and pushed back for these other projects (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy II, and now possibly The Hobbit).
I suppose now he could say that "The Hobbit" will be his personal "Fellowship of the Ring." Bummer-- a del Toro "Mountains of Madness" is something I've been waiting the better part of a decade for.
Still, this gives me hope (from Fangoria):
"...the one property he has always wanted to make has just been acquired by Universal, his HELLBOY II studio. “H.P. Lovecraft’s AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS is not in limbo anymore,” he reveals. “I’ve self-financed the designs, the maquettes, everything—so I’d be overjoyed if it worked out with them. But it’s definitely R-rated, is very expensive and doesn’t have a happy ending. I’m waiting patiently for big tentpole horror coming back into fashion, like THE EXORCIST and ALIEN, so I can do it justice.” - Alfonzo, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I just don't think Bruce Campbell would be a very good Bilbo.
- loganarcher, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5I remember that episode of South Park not too far back where they ask him to come up with ideas for the movie and he starts going on about the special effects instead.
- NSMike, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5Dear God, No. This isn't a Bruce Campbell film. And Ted Raimi wouldn't work in the Hobbit universe, since he always has to squeeze his brother into his productions somehow.
- eleven, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5Bilbo didn't age much after he got the Ring so they would not need to make him much younger than he was at the start of the trilogy. Bilbo was already an older hobbit when he went on his quest.
- Syric, on 12/21/2007, -1/+6Ian McKellen doesn't really need to look younger, IMO. Gandalf's meant to be thousands of years old, is he not? Plus or minus fifty isn't gonna make a difference.
They had a youngified Holm in the prologue of Fellowship. Granted, that was just a 5-second scene, but it worked well enough for me. I think it was just makeup tricks, and no CGI, though I don't know if whatever technique they used could hold up for a whole movie, though. Recasting is likely. - completerobot, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4Jackson's producing. The director spot is still open.
- stevensj2, on 12/21/2007, -4/+8I don't know what Hobbit you guys read, but "dark" definitely does NOT come into mind.
The Hobbit is a much, much lighter - almost childlike - story in comparison to LOTR, and even then, the whole "dark fantasy" thing was quite subtle.
If this is done with a dark twist, it will sadly be as laughable and ridiculous as the newest remake of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
I understand Jackson isn't directing, and I'm aware del Toro is a fantastic director. But is he good enough to know when to deviate from what may be expected of him in order to stay true to the story (as Jackson has done, and would do)? - cvp1, on 12/21/2007, -1/+5I could tolerate this. Definitely.
- Godmil, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4Raimi had nothing to do with Xena/Hercules, that was his partner Rob Tapert's project. I'm more worried about the Spiderman syndrome... sure they were entertaining enough, but I cant sit down and rewatch any of those films like the LOTR films which just seem to get better with each viewing.
- Elranzer, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4Harrier, and kinda creepy. I prefer the jolly Jackson... New Zealand's own Santa Claus.
- Godmil, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4Yes, I was a big fan of Peter Jackson's about a decade before LOTR, Bad Taste is still my fav film. I think he really proved his skill with Heavenly Creatures.
- jhuik, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4Would be great if it happens. Very few other directors could possibly pull it off. The one other intriguing suggestion would be Alfonso Cuarón.
- yfguitarist, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4If you still aren't convinced of Del Toro's abilities after seeing "Pan's Labyrinth", see "The Devil's Backbone".
- masonreloaded, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4Jackson may not have brought a unique voice to the films - which IMHO is why they succeeded, he let Tolkien stand on it's own strengths instead of trying to make them into something they are not. People seem to forget what a disaster they could have been. We could have had a single film version with the story completely neutered - what we got was a huge expensive, relatively faithful adaption that worked.
So to say he sufficed is true, maybe he didnt bring great directorial artistry to it, but as a sheer accomplishment on a technical and logistical scale, avoiding a complete disaster is an achievement in of itself. 99% of other directors would have not done as well - he was the perfect choice. - dn11, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4this is why people need to actually read stories not just headlines
- yfguitarist, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Yes, it's awesome. Del Toro is consistent as well.
- Elranzer, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3I like GRAPES
- FcukAllYall, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Damn near Peter's twin....nice choice!!!!!
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Well, Gandalf doesn't necessarily look his age because he's not even human anyway. It's just a form he assumes. He's a Maiar, as balrogs, Sauron and all the wizards.
The Silmarillion may have been dry and boring at times (a LOT of times), but it had some really interesting backstory. - blankoboy, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Peter Jackson directing
Ian Holm as Bilbo
Sir Ian Mc Kellan as Gandalf
.....................or BUST! - limpl0uie, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Lord, If you hear me, let this happen.
Del Toro is one of the few new Hollywood geniuses (granted he has been around for a bit now but he's only recently hit it big). - ciano, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3I'd be happy with Del Toro or Cuaron, they're both great. Del Toro gets my vote, though.
- flaterates, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Pan's Labrynith was a great movie. Guillermo rocks.
- venom8599, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Please, anyone but Sam Raimi. I'm a fan of some of his stuff, but it's just not going to be a good mesh with The Hobbit. I don't want to have it interrupted by the ever-present Ted Raimi and Bruce Campbell (awesome though he may be) cameos.
- rebotfc, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Another hidden gem is the commentary track and effects bonus DVD of Blade II, it's awesome and shows his real dedication to film.
