Real interview here: http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2008/04/25/28747-g ...- karrock, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Exactly!! How did a two-bit "Reader's Digest" synopsis trump the original interview from TheOneRing??
- yellowfish04, on 04/29/2008, -10/+3umm...The Hobbit II: The Golden Army? wtf is this, is it original Tolkein work? cause it better be, ugh..
- LorDSyNDracuL, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5it says Hellboy II: The Golden Army. It's the Movie that Guillermo Del Toro is finishing right now.
- yellowfish04, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3lol, wowwww, please bury my original comment so far down that it'll never see the light of day again.
- imquaid, on 04/29/2008, -6/+2yeah, they're just breaking the hobbit into two parts, i guess so they don't have to cut out as much from the book. and so they make twice as much money
- stubear, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5No, they are making a film that fills in the 60 years in between the events of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.
- LorDSyNDracuL, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5it says Hellboy II: The Golden Army. It's the Movie that Guillermo Del Toro is finishing right now.
- elsux0r, on 04/29/2008, -1/+16Sir Ian and Andy Serkis on board is a good thing. del Toro is a very capable director, I'm excited to see the film(s).
- eleven, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3Now all we need is the second Sir Ian to come on board too and we'll have a movie!
- odigity, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3He is too old. I love Ian Holmes, but he will not be playing Bilbo this time.
- stormgren, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah, Bilbo was much younger in The Hobbit than in the trilogy.
- eleven, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3Now all we need is the second Sir Ian to come on board too and we'll have a movie!
- Asianwaste, on 04/29/2008, -14/+1WTF? Isn't the sequel to the "Hobbit" already made? I believe it was called "A NEW HOPE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- consoneo, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2I, um... thought that the sequel... if you wanna call it that... was written before The Hobbit was ever written... seeing as how The Hobbit was a "prequel" to the entire LoTR trilogy.
- KyleMcBr, on 04/29/2008, -9/+2Go read a book.

- Ninjao, on 04/29/2008, -3/+5I just hope Peter Jackson keeps this under control and makes sure the movie is nothing less than what he created.
- omercyme33, on 04/29/2008, -3/+25My girlfriend is going to be so pissed when she finds out that I'm going to force her to sit through another 4+ hours of Tolkien.
- TheDeadDodo, on 04/29/2008, -14/+3A suggestion: dump Tolkien, keep the girlfriend. After all, you can't have sex with a long dead Oxford don. Well, actually you can... but I'm really not gonna go into that.
- Deadpixel1221, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1A Real Doll is NOT a girlfriend.
- Shogi, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Duct Tape.
If she doesn't love you when it's over, dump her. - LogicBomB, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1My wife is already super excited for it. We both want to be there opening night. She also put "GTA 4" on our home calendar when I told her the hard release date.
I don't know how else to say it but "you have chosen....poorly".
- bonjourmr, on 04/29/2008, -7/+1I believe its the same Hobbit story split into two parts, maybe a bit extra being drawn from Tolkien's other works. The hobbit is pretty board, even if it is has a shorter page count than each of the Lord of the Rings series.
- BlameCanada, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Not according to GDT in that interview.
"GDT: You know, I traveled to New Zealand just a little while ago, and one of the main reasons for going was to sit down and talk about the second film. ‘The Hobbit’, the book, is really one self-contained film, so for the second movie we sat down and worked it out. When we did this we got really excited because this second film is not a ‘tag on’, it’s not ‘filler’, it’s an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative. There will be certain things that we will see from the first movie but from a different point of view, but it will feel like a volume, in the 5 volumes of the entire story. It will not feel like a bridge, I’ve been hearing it called ‘a bridge film’, it’s not, it’s an integral chapter of the story, and I think we’re all on the same page."
It doesn't sound like the second film will be a complete fabrication either. More like weaving a tale taken from much of the books that refer to this time period. There's most likely enough information there to make a movie that fits nicely within the LotR universe and timeline, while taking a little bit of license. - crowbar77, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5RTFA.
- BlameCanada, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Not according to GDT in that interview.
- AoiTakuma, on 04/29/2008, -1/+5i am excited for this movie. Del Toro did amazing work in Pan's Labyrinth and it looks like his visual style is going to be more present in Hellboy 2. He could do some great things with the Hobbit and I cant wait for it
- BlameCanada, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3I'm glad that they went with GDT. Loved Pan's Labyrinth and am really looking forward to Hellboy 2. He sounds really passionate about the films and staying true to what has already been created, while pushing the envelope even further. With all due respect to Peter Jackson, who knows, maybe it could turn out to be like George Lucas handing over the reigns to Irvin Kershner for Empire.
- deldigger, on 04/29/2008, -7/+3Peter jackson might overwhelm GDT. I would not be surprised to see Jackson as the real director.
Del - TheSalmonThief, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4This is great news, but I'm much more excited for Del Toro's adaptation of At The Mountains of Madness (Lovecraft's novella).
- 0tis, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Dugg for Lovecraft. Hadn't heard of that, off to Google!
- Ebeach, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Had no idea. More should know. Dugg!!
- davidwasman, on 04/29/2008, -2/+2I fear being dugg down, but I have an honest question I would like answered:
Why is everyone so excited he's doing this instead of Peter Jackson?- Crabnormal, on 04/29/2008, -2/+9I think many people would prefer Peter Jackson. But if it has to be someone else, Del Toro is an excellent choice.
- yellowfish04, on 04/29/2008, -1/+6because it's the next best thing. due to miles of red tape and unfortunate contracts Jackson can't/wont do it
- LilBoyLuver, on 04/29/2008, -1/+5I am also excited to see a new take on the way middle-earth is portrayed, the cinematography in Pan's Labyrinth was amazing. With Peter Jackson looking over Del Toro's shoulder the whole time we will get the best of both worlds.
- kelalo, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4Go watch Pan's Labyrinth. :)
- Wadajoobadude, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0This has gotten me really excited to see these movies. Del Toro's style is going to offer so much to the movies and reflect the Hobbits more fairy tale/light fantasy feeling, especially when you compare the mood to the LOTR trilogy.
- jsaic, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5just don't fkc up smaug.
- electricdragon, on 04/29/2008, -2/+2Please bring back Ian Holm, it won't be the same without him.
- kelalo, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4Bilbo is supposed to be in his fifties when he finds the Ring--while I love Ian Holm, I think taking an actor who's 77 or thereabouts might not be the best choice, especially if you're hoping to appeal to a mass audience and considering the active nature of the role. Of course, Frodo was also supposed to be quite a bit older than they portrayed him in the films, so they may go with that route. Who knows?
- ShugNinx21, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2 In Lord of the Rings it is said that Bilbo looked no older than he did back during the Hobbit.

- pedo, on 04/29/2008, -1/+3Pan's Labyrinth was the best movie of 2006. see it if you haven't yet.
- diggdiggerid, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1I loved Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage. Initially I would have thought The Hobbit would be boring because I hate Tolkien's literary style, but hopefully Guillermo del Toro can make it into a great movie.
- charmaniac, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1If Sir Ian is not part of The Hobbit, then it simply will not be the same. He was amazing as Bilbo in the trilogy, and although Sir Ian is older in real life, they can work this into the story and use make up during the earlier scenes.
- terplox, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3But in this case, all the scenes are "earlier" scenes. Its decades before LOTR.
- pyry, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1Doesn't matter-- Gandalf is one of the Maiar, and thus has been around for a damn long time.
- j3ff86, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Have you even read the book?
- terplox, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3But in this case, all the scenes are "earlier" scenes. Its decades before LOTR.
- Disregard, on 04/29/2008, -0/+5The Hobbit 2 : Now Bilbo sets forth with a wise-cracking jive-talking pint-sized dragon! (voiced by Eddie Murphy)
- usingpond, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1Is this about the Gandalf Ian or some other Sir Ian?
- karrock, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2RTFA... Ian McKellan.
- usingpond, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1Nowhere was his last name mentioned. Also, many people have been referring to Bilbo when they mentioned "Sir Ian." Why don't you RTFComment?
- karrock, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Oh really?
http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2008/04/25/28747-g ...
Ian McKellen. TWICE. Count em.
- karrock, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2RTFA... Ian McKellan.
- ahawks, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Is no one else concerned about a Hobbit sequel? How non-canon can you get?
- pyry, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Heh, seriously. *concerned* It's not like Tolkien doesn't have enough other writing to draw off of though. Maybe not for the time between the Hobbit and FotR, but holy *****. Silmarillion, Lost Tales, Lays of Beleriand?
Nevermind that. Hobbit Christmas Special!- Mnevis, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2The problem is, the sequel IS between The Hobbit and FotR. I... really don't know wtf they're thinking. They can't possibly just make ***** up, right? I mean, Christopher Tolkien has always been pretty strict on what people do with his father's work.
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Not just using animatronics, but someone is FINALLY PUSHING THEM TO THE LIMIT AGAIN?
The only del Toro movie I've ever seen is Hellboy, but he's already my hero. I've been waiting for someone to slap the ridiculousness of CGI in the face for a long time. Rock on.- minionboy, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0If Hellboy is the only del Toro movie you've seen so far, go see Pan's Labyrinth. Like right now. Go. Why are you still reading this, go watch Pan's Labyrinth already! Stream it if you have to! STOP READING AND WATCH PAN'S LABYRINTH! >:O
- LJRod82, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah, there's still something very tangible and visually intriguing with animatronics. It's old school special FX, but it works well. What would be cool is if Weta Workshop teamed up with Stan Winston Studios. If there's any studio that has a track record for making large animatronic reptiles, it's Stan Winston Studios. Be interesting to see if they're going to augment the animatronics with some CGI to smooth it out. Kind of like how Genndy Tartakovsky is doing with Dark Crystal 2.
- JoeViturbo, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I have one Question: After making the Hobbit and its sequel, will Guillermo succumb to the Jackson curse and lose a whole lot of weight and get laser eye surgery?
- aboyd, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Can I sign up for that curse?!?!
- karrock, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Guillermo already lost a lot of weight making his masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth... Hopefully he's recovered from that by now...
- matriculated, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Ian McKellen's secret to acting: "How did I know what to say? They had my lines written down on a script. How did I know where to stand? People showed me."
- Mnevis, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1"But by no means will we depart from the canon, we will take the three previous films as canon. When I become part of a world that I love, such as this, I really come with a lot of enthusiasm and hard work,"
I see two problems:
1) Shouldn't the canon be... well, the books?
2) Didn't he specifically say he DIDN'T like Tolkien's work? - nigdef, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1this is really good news but what is it with the rings movie and directors losing weight ***** should be called loss of the weight.come on del toro eat some pies...ha ha ha only kiddin
- my10cent, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0Del Crap Director needs to back the hell away from this project, he is going to ruin it forever.
