- jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -18/+197it is easter weekend to so people will be with thier familys not seeing movies
- kenflannery, on 10/12/2007, -27/+148the movie was awesome, well worth the 3 and change hour run time. I think people were just confused as to what it was... like if it was even a movie, a joke, or what, the whole "double feature" thing seemed to throw a lot of people off.
- pixelbasic, on 10/12/2007, -7/+79Hell, just the 'Thanksgiving' trailer was worth the ticket price.
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+72They should have named it Happy Feet 2 then it would have made more monies.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+66I would much rather see grindhouse again over titanic.....
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -15/+69The movies were actually the best 6.00 (student discount) I've spent. I went with friends and found it thoroughly hilarious. I found it to be very much in the style of Kill Bill (small coincidence there) but far more shocking--those movies get inside your head not in a scary/horrific way but through pure change of pace and being so different.
- carniv0re, on 10/12/2007, -11/+58That's a damn shame because this movie was really good.
- IanPatterson, on 10/12/2007, -11/+49Whatever, this movie kicks serious ass
- LightGrenades, on 10/12/2007, -10/+47I think they just did a poor job at PR, and being creative with it.
- phlezk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42it rules, ***** the movie ticket sales.
- SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40Zombie movie for Easter, how appropriate...
- mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34It was the most fun I've had at the theaters in a long time.
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33lol...If you're thinking about digging him down..........................................DON'T!
- irishpunk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32how could you not like a film with zombies, violence, and sexual content. it was the best day to celebrate good friday
- icoup, on 10/12/2007, -11/+36DON'T! (p.s. ...don't digg me down till you see it.)
- modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25machete is being made into a movie according to imdb
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26This is one of those movies where you should probably go out and see it in the theatre.
- Leer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Planet Terror = Hilarious, Bloody, and Fun.
Death Proof = Creepy, Hilarious, and Cool.
Both movies are great.
Grindhouse deserves better.
But it is easter weekend...for an R rated film this is great. In fact its the R rated film that pulled in the most money.
And why do I have a feeling people bought tickets for Blades of Glory to sneak into this one...... - BigDane, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29This movies is 100% deathproof! Seriously though.. A guy was eating a baby.. the movie is cinematic mastery
- icoup, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25@zybch:
Have you even see it? Its nothing like Pulp Fiction... and there aren't "multiple-story-lines-all-coming-together-at-the-end type of thing" in this movie. Its two seperate movies with fake trailers in between.
And for the record, it was ***** sweet. I haven't had that kind of movie experience in a long time. I would actually say first time seeing The Matrix was close, and that was a long time ago. - justinsimonin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22that movie was ***** amazing and when I saw it the whole theater was cheering, clapping, etc...
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -3/+23pixelbasic, Thanksgiving and Machete. I'd like to see those two made into real movies.
- DGRP, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25This is doesn't affect the fact that it was awesome.
Also think about it, Strong R = Focused and closed off audience - christopher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23as much of rodriguez's work as i like, after seeing the previews and the girl with the machine gun leg, i was prepared for a bad movie as much as a good one. I was very happy when the woman was Rose McGowan and the movie was ***** good. By the time you get to that part of the movie it really doesn't seem all that out there. The first one was very disgusting and interesting (great characters!) and the second (Tarintino's) was entertaining without any thinking requirements.
Movie's like this are not about opening weekend sales. it will sell plenty far in the future on dvds. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Yeah, the only problem is those 70s exploitation flicks didn't cost $56 million to make.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -20/+38> People who said that Death Proof sucked just can't handle old school Tarantino.
God forbid they have their own tastes and opinion. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -3/+20I don't think Deathproof sucked, but after Planet Terror it just felt really slow.
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20It was crazy, action packed, and the phony "prevues of upcoming attractions" were hilarious.
Zombie Killing plus stunt driver serial killer was awesome, although the feature would have been better served to reverse the order of the films (zombie killing last). - DownIsTheNewUp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I saw it on Saturday and I haven't had that much fun at the movies in YEARS. And the "coming attractions" are worth the price of admission alone. It's a shame the ignorant sheeple of America would rather pay to see inane, unfunny garbage like "Eddie Murphy's 200th fat-fetish train-wreck" or "the Napoleon Dynamite guy plays a goofy dork yet again!"
Damn LA and their $9 student "discount". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21i didn't have a chance to see it yet, but im definetly going next week
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13R Rated movies like this do infinately better on DVD release. It's box office isn't great for two reasons:
1) It's rated R.
2) It's easter.
3) It's rated R.
Who goes to see a movie about zombies during a holy week? Terrible time to release an R-rated movie. At this time period, family movies get a big boost. - sugarazor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Jennica nailed it. Simple math was working against it. You could show Blades of Glory two and a half times in the time it takes to show Grindhouse once with opening commercials and trailers (the real ones).
Plus, Grindhouse was on 1,000 less screens than Blades. The Hard R rating plus Easter weekend didn't help either.
Still, to be fair, Lord of the Rings never had a hard time making money with a 3.5 hour running time, of course it had a PG-13 behind it as well.
Let's just be honest, this isn't a movie for everyone. And who cares? If Tarantino and Rodriguez want to make a sequel, what's stopping them? It's not like they're struggling indie filmmakers in desperate need of a major studio to back their project. So please, tell me, what does the box office matter for something like this? At least there are guys out there like these two willing to take a chance and make a different kind of film. - dancenhance, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I'll gladly go see it again. The whole presentation was fantastic. Worth every penny.
- TomRemixed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I didn't know it came out yet and I wasn't quite sure what it was until I read my RollingStone on saturday. (by the way the cover is amazing) They didn't do a good job marketing it. It made people more confused than ready to go and spend $8 on it to sit for 3+ hours.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I would love to have video of an audience seeing these movies for the first time. THAT would be just as entertaining as the Machete trailer.
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'll just have to go and see it again then.
- macinpcusr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This is usually how cult classics are born. It'll capture a certain audience and the sales after theaters will be strong. Only time will tell if this film makes it or gets forgotten. I'm willing to bet it'll be stronger after theaters because it was an awesome movie.
- CrimsonWeltall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10On any other weekend, I'd love to see a movie full of violence and zombies...but this weekend is the anniversary of Jesus being brutally crucified and then coming back from the dead...so I guess I can't.
- Leer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Yeah, same here.
People need to see this double-feature
its amazing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14My thought? This is so ***** sad. Sure Easter weekend contributed to it... but frankly.. i blame stupid ***** america which likes it's ***** romantic comedies, it's played out CGI laden movies that have no story, action movies that have more explosions than characters worth a *****, science fiction movies that are nothing more than action movies with lasers in the future or some *****.
There's a whole world of movies out there. Noir films, exploitation films, modern foriegn films, old vaudeville films... that just rock. I'm not speaking of any particular nation or any particular film movement, but america's entertainment and appreciation of art is extremely narrow in scope. Just look at britney spears and realtiy tv.
I think it's sad this didn't get the sales for a reason, a selfish one. I want a sequel. Even if it's not done by the same directors. Hell if Rob Zombie and Wes Craven want to take it up, it'd be awesome. It's just campy and fun.
We live in a world now where the MPAA attacks it's consumers like rabid dogs because of piracy. We live in a world were most things coming out of hollywood are tired "sure things" that did well in a focus group using overly recycled ideas. How the hell do you think Scary Movie, Date Movie, Not another Teenmovie and the like have done so well? It's because hollywood is just old and tired and ***** played out.
But this? This movie made going to the movies a fun experience. A truly fun experience. You didn't just go to see a film, you went to experience an era. To experience a particular niche in that era, which was fun as hell and done by people who loved to do what they did. They had shoe string budgets, they didn't do it for the money. That's why movies (totally unrelated) like Casablanca and the original 12 angry men are so awesome. You could tell there was true artistry there and the people that made it loved what they did.
This is a return to that, but with a budget.
I think everyone who hasn't seen it, should pledge to go see it. And those who have gone, go again. I think a message should be sent to the MPAA.. to experiment more. The MPAA seems more open than the RIAA ever will be.
Just look at the music industry. Only "sure things" such as your pop acts... and your rock/rap acts that go major after the indie movement has proven their sales will make it end up getting properly marketed. Want that to continue with hollywood? - SilentKenshin, on 10/12/2007, -18/+28I'm a teenager, saw it at a drive in on saturday night (totally added to the experience). And I loved the whole movie. Beginning to end. People who said that Death Proof sucked just can't handle old school Tarantino.
- ongie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15This really shakes my faith in modern cinema.
I suppose it's a lot like the music industry. When an artist tries something different (and in my opinion, Tarantino and Rodriguez were successful), the public at large isn't interested.
Shame. Damn shame.
Napoleon Dynamite doesn't have ***** on Rose McGowan sportin' a machine gun-leg. I wish mainstream America had a lick of sense. - christoast, on 09/04/2008, -3/+12If.....you...are... thinking......about ...burying..this..comment..... DONT!
- wilymon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12this just makes me sad, frak the box office, i saw it at an early screening with a theater full of willing participants, because this movie is essentially a theme park ride you have to be ready for. it kicked ass.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I agree... my friend said the QT masturbation was intentional on his part, but I really don't care what his intentions were because I found all the dialogue in Death Proof boring, and concept boring is still boring. The chase was great, though, and Planet Terror and the previews were awesome.
- Vasant56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Fight Club bombed too.
- Armagetto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11That's what I was going to say. Pulp Fiction took off very slowly, starting out in art house theatres and eventually making it to the multiplexes after it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and was nominated for several oscars.
- Leer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Think about it: The Reaping did WORSE
It just didnt get money cause it was rated R
Ill give it till the end of its run t decide whether or not it bombed. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"did nothing to tell me what the hell the movie was about."
The term "Grindhouse" is a genre of film. The film "Grindhouse" is two films in "Grindhouse" style. The genre itself is characterized by a focus on sensationalistic violence, not plot. - Leer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Grindhouse will get more money in the long run.
These numbers mean ***** right now.
It's spring break where I live which is more of an opportunity to see it and also next weekend family's wont be the ones going to the theatre...
