- DDRSkata, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33It is a great book, as a story. Anyone taking it too seriously should be punched, and I'm not even kidding.
- grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Anyone notice people taking an obviously fictional book and assigning it meaning beyond the authors intention?
Nah that never happens. - netbear, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26"Da Vinci Code blatantly attacks Christianity..."
You say that like it's a bad thing. - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"Da Vinci Code blatantly attacks Christianity and this is the ONE and ONLY movie that Google directly aligns itself with?"
Get over it. It's a FICTION book. - RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Why the heck did he get modded down for asking if Canada was included? I'm Canadian and yes we like to participate in these contests as well. Although it does happen, it's rare that you see a contest for Canada only, esp on digg.
- grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Don't forget this is just another example of the "war" on Christianity.
Or was it Christmas?
No wait Terror yeah thats it.
No wait Drugs, yeah totally war on Drugs.
Wait who are we fighting again? - informant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11While "The Da Vinci Code" certainly wasn't bad, I think that the prequel "Angels and Demons" was a much better book. If you're going to read "Code", try to start with "Angels"--I don't think you'll be disappointed...
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14He doesn't present his fiction as fact, he presents his fact as fact. He notes that he doesn't make up characteristics of certain pieces of art -- he says nothing about the interpretation being correct. Have a look at the original Madonna of the Rocks and tell me you don't see the details he describes... or is the book too blasphemous to dignify it by reading it?
Just curious, are you of the opinion that J.K. Rowling is devil-spawn, or is it simply her novels that should be burned? - snhagood, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm reading the book for the second time - I really enjoy it. In fact, this is the first book I've read in quite a while. Why does everyone think it sucks? Maybe if you know a lot about art it's a stretch, and tedious, but I don't really know a lot about Da Vinci so to me, it's fun. Totally inspiring me to save my pennies and go to Paris before I die :)
- PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Or its just a movie.
Or its just a book (found in the fiction section). - drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13At least, unlike the bible, teh da vinci code engcourages reaearch and looking up things for yourself.
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Da Vinci code is fiction, based on some fact and ancient codes that mimic age-old secret societies like teh free masons, scottish rite, etc. Some think that the bible was written as a fiction (it matches fiction of the time) and that was interpreted literally to control the masses. Da Vinci Code helps open eyes to the buried codes and lies that may be part of our reality. If you haven't read it then you can't really speak to it.
- Duffeon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I'm sick of people getting mad at the Da Vinci Code and Dan Brown. It is an amazing thrilling fiction book, the key word there being FICTION (I'm a Catholic, and I loved it.) If you can't read that book without questioning your faith, you're not very faithful.
People should also consider reading Angels and Demons, 10 times better (as ciree said)!!
By the way, I do Digg this post. - DougTanner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Canadians can't participate, lame!
- digiital, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12No digg, because Canada is excluded, thats sucks bigtime. Canada's bigger then AU.
- lukes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8hi burke, i enjoyed the book as well. the story draws on real places, buildings and people, but fictionalizes the story around them. going through the book i bookmarked a number of pages, and later googled many of the elements of the book out of curiosity. my googling uncovered quite boring explanations for many things which the book either neglected to inform, or told a different tale all together. off the top of my head, google the name of the circular church in london that was built by the knights templar, the rose line cathedral in france .. it's a pity because i liked the version of christianity portrayed in the book, it seemed a lot more accessible.
- Makar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7How to write a Dan Brown book:
1) The main character is an expert on some subject
2) Someone dies and leaves big bloody clues all over the place
3) The main character goes to the crime scene, solves some clues, but someone is against him and chases him all over some city
4) Easy-reading with big font, fictional-conspiracy plot.
5) Fictional secrets are unveiled. The end.
At least, there are three Dan Brown books that follow this formula. The Da Vinci Code is a fun, light, quick, easy read. Not a book to discuss or go mad for. And certainly, not an *amazing* book. - ludwik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Have you noticed that different countries has different prizes and rules?
US has the most expensive first prize, and there are ten thousand (!) prizes for finalist. Total arv – $428,170.54
UK version includes only 121 prizes.
AU version includes 68 prizes, and those are the cheapest one.
And there are no PL version at all ;(

*(self-inflicted corporal punishment not included) - uglymike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I am from no particular religious background but I enjoyed the book, like you did snhagood. A good read. I don't understand why a fictional book has caused such an uproar? It was an exciting book with or without the religious angle. Other books in the Dan Brown series are just as good. I don't see people having a go a Digital Fortress for all of the technical misrepresentations and "made up facts" in this book. It's just a good fun read!

I'm damn ready. - IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"If you don't trust Microsoft with it why trust Google?"
Because Google proove me that they were better than Microsoft. - Bota, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ahem
*clears throat*
US .. UK .. AU
guess canada fell out of google maps databases again
i mean, i love google as much as the next blabbering fanboi. but this is just ridiculous. - Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't listen to the appropriately named assman. As an American I would be happy to invite our northern friends to join. You might want to think about volunteering to do so, the way things are going you may just get merged "for your own protection of course". We may have to send a few happy marines to go liberate and protect you from ohhhhhhhh the British imperialists oppressing you. :)
- uglymike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Size doesn't matter. AU doesn't have those crazy laws Canada has.
- Mazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It seems that if you make fiction in a world that is a little too realistic, people get upset. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade didn't upset so many people because it takes place in a comic book/action adventure world.
But if you use real places and people for your fiction, it makes people mad for some reason. It seems to me the same mindset that makes people angry when you make cartoons of there icons.
I don't know. Does anyone else not really care and want to maybe play a fun game?
on a side note, art history might be one of the most interesting things you can study. Its better then fiction sometimes. We may never know why there is an extra hand in the last supper. We can only make an educated guess and think about it, which was Da Vinci's real intent. - draven_b4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Great book.. First time in a long time I was hooked right off the bat.. I highly recommend it even for people (like me) who sometimes find it difficult to fully get into the book and wait for the movie ..
But google and sony dropped the ball on this one excluding canadians.. Come on guys wake up! - ph713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FYI, for the US version of the contest, the Grand Prize is basically a huge vacation package. Winner and 3 Guests, 1st class roundtrip airfare from your home city to London and back, ditto for Paris, Rome, and New York (all seperate sets of roundtrip tickets from Home). 4 nights in a nice hotel in each place, transportation covered, etc. You can choose to use your sets of tickets at any time within 1 year of winning. You also get a huge package of Sony electronics goods (flatpanel TV, laptop, cameras, etc, etc). The estimated retail value is US$128,000.
- ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -17/+20"The book is the most blasphemous writing since the catholics put out the cathechism."
Go ***** yourself, MASTERPL. (I wonder what the reaction would be if I said the same about Luther's 95 Theses - likely -40 and at least 20 comments similar to my own).
It does get quite old when people cite the Code as fact, though; I'll agree with you on that. - Bratsche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ berean
The Catholic Church teaches that one is saved through faith *and* works. No where does it teach that if you simply believe that grace will save you, you are going to hell. Regarding that doctrine, the teaching stems from the Letter of St. James, which states, "You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone." (Jm 2:26)
If the Catholic Church did not choose Scripture, who did? We know that the Bible existed very similar to its present form since at least the late fourth century. Scripture itself teaches that the pillar and bulwark of the Truth is not the Bible, but the Church (1 Tim 5:15)
If I am totally off the mark, please feel free to email me at bratsche.digg@gmail.com. And my apologies to other digg community members for hijacking the thread. - TheOtherGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The book is pretty lightweight.. and good for a read if you like to enjoy a story with your brain in neutral (which I do)
Someone once told me that reading The Da Vinci Code is a lot like masturbation - it feels great at the time.. but afterwards you just feel dirty. - KenLin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Surely this is a sign of EVIL?
Here's a good test: if Yahoo!, MSN, or AOL done the exact same thing, would you digg it? - RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who the hell cares? "Da Vinci", to 99.99% of the world, refers to only one person.
- HalfBrian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Indeed it was a great book.
An incredible coincidence: I just completed the book less than 5 minutes ago. Maybe it was meant to be by MM. - fume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Angels and Demons was good but not great. It takes half the book to finally get going. Deception Point was much better than Angels
- grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It's just you.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -18/+20don't kid yourself, the US would never consider canada part of the country ... EXCLUDED.
- noiles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Canada not being able to participate has nothing to do with Quebec. That's like Maine not participating so the entire US being excluded. It just doesn't make any sense.
And we do pay for health care, just in taxes. - slartibartphast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got sucked into reading it. It doesn't bash catholics, but it's not a good book either! Silly premise, and bad characters. In fact for a book so bent on appealing to women, the main female character is almost insultingly dumb. Well she starts out smart and I guess her brain just fades...
- trump, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4naw, it can't. It's possible (and happens all the time) to just exclude Quebec and allow everyone from the other provinces to participate. However, the laws in Quebec do make sense
- ashester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes it is a good book, but people shouldn't take it as fact, that is what annoys me. I'll talk to my friends who say the church is bad for not telling the truth about jesus's wife and that they shouldn't threaten his descendants (excuse my bad spelling). So i admire you Duffeon because few people can really enjoy a book that accuses your religion but as you said it is fiction. So please people, don't be hate it but don't take it as fact even though he may say it is.
i shall dig the post too and i can't wait to try (and win :D) - ErrandboyOfDoom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"I'm reading the book for the second time - I really enjoy it. In fact, this is the first book I've read in quite a while. Why does everyone think it sucks?"
Those of us who actually enjoy reading found it a trite ripoff of other stories with better execution, most notably, Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. Foucault's Pendulum is actually a satire on conspiracy theories and theorists. Dan Brown borrowed the structure, but missed the point. From all appearances, Brown ripped off a book he didn't understand.
Worse still, he ruined that incredible ending... - grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah Heaven forbid that women be treated as equals.
Wow did not even realize how much double meaning there was there until I proofed it. - srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I received my winning cryptex today!!!!!
Woo Hoo!!!!! - gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dead on. The book is a fun, light read. Nothing more, nothing less. Dan Brown's books are pretty much solidly in the "great to read at the beach" category.

[comment buried, show commenthide comment] + 1 digg I think that you are the one that needs to let it go. I have been studying the code since I was 14yrs old. I took it on a school project, as I went to a catholic school, i just wanted to rebel. While there are few things I do not agree with that are in the book, there are some that I truly believe in. Some of overseas trips and expeditions that I have been on would amaze anyone. I am now 31yrs old and I am a true believer of the Da Vinci code. Not one of these over nighters who call them selves true believers. No offense to anyone. I just think if you want to jump on the band wagon do your research first. To all that do not agree with the book that's fine to. I don't preach it but every time some one wants to go up against me and challenge the authenticity of the Da Vinci code I say Bring It. I have never been beaten or proven wrong yet. All The Best Guys.I hope the movie is a cop out.
Da Vinci Master
