- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8google video wins a gold medal in the online special olympics
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ohh lordy.... Google admits they do something wrong and all anybody can say is "Yes you did!! Google Sucks" Silly Monkies.... when is the last time any of ya heard a multi-billion dollar company admit it made a mistake without a court saying it had to?
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, so they added a front page and some categorizing to it, but it's still fairly craptacular.
To any Google employee reading this: The http://video.google.com interface looks like total *****. I realize that Google is into minimalizism, but for god's sake, you're trying to run a storefront here. I don't want to freakin' search for content, I want to BROWSE for content. And even the search doesn't work right, because 80% of the stuff there is tagged poorly.
The store need massive amounts of categorization and tagging. Hire a couple dudes to go through all the content and properly tag it all, because you clearly cannot rely on uploaders to do it properly. A good start would be to reject any new video content without at least 10 or 20 descriptive tags and two or three categories. Seriously, if I can't find anything interesting on your site, then why would I keep trying?
As it stands now, Google Video is useful only as a place for people to upload a video and then post a link to it on forums and such. Basically using Google's bandwidth and servers to host their crap. Weed out the crap, tag everything properly, put everything in categories, and create an easy way to browse through the stuff. Then you've got something. And ditch the minimalistic interface idea, it won't work. - mliving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google needs to return to their strategy of doing things at Google speed NOT CBS or investors speed.
The video demand that Apple is getting right now is fleeting... it's new, iPOD users dig it because its easy but eventually someone will develop an easy way for people to put their own TV programming on these devices and the idea of video downloads is redundant.
Besides, most people who are into TV that much aren't spending hours on-line so why would they PAY to watch their shows on-line when they can stretch out on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and a soda?! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What Apple has done with the iTunes store sets the bar really high."
the funny thing is, google has the clout and resources to not only rival iTMS, but surpass it, yet for some inexplicable reason, hasn't done so. - three60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google Video store needs browsing capability. Unfortunately, this is very anti-Google; they want you to search and expect you to know exactly what you're looking for. This is not how people look for video/movies at all. This represents a "we know better than you" attitude that is pervasive in a lot of Google products. It took 1.5 years to get a delete button in Gmail for crying out loud, a feature that has been in Hotmail for 10 years.
- spectre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the fact that everyone is lambasting Google Video, but this site can't go 4 hours without someone posting a link to a Google Video. Hypocrisy is a bitch.
- beni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"You can't come out and launch a product like Google Video and say 'CSI' and 'Survivor' are there if they're not on the home page."
Wouldn't Google Video be better if they kept Survivor off the front page? - 0mnio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They win points for me in admiting their mistake. I think the site is a great idea....but...they need better usability testing and UI designers invlolved...they simply rushed it.
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should just make google video a place where people can host videos
- masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0spectre (0) said "I love the fact that everyone is lambasting Google Video, but this site can't go 4 hours without someone posting a link to a Google Video"
Because it simply sucks, but the bandwidth to those videos is comcastic! - frankiefrankie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually the new design is worse. All thumbnail images are aliased. Too many thumbnails on the main page.
- MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should rename the service: Google Video Alpha.
- edto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google kind of jumped the gun on the purchasing thing, it still feels so bare and crappy. Kinda like a discount bin.
- jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I couldn't believe Google would launch something that important without it being completely ready. I have seen new Web 2.0 companies in the "Alpha" or "Beta" stage that have a better functioning and much better looking layout. Google needs to use a little dash of CSS here and there. They did a good job on Gmail.
- skytimelapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I did just find a charlie rose episode with kurt vonnegut for .99c, so it's not all that bad.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The site's design makes it impossible for users to take it seriously as a retailer. Who the hell would be willing to buy anything from such an amateurish layout--let alone give it your credit card??
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I've made a huge mistake.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and they think that the new redesign is any better? come on!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google video rocks for what it was. a place to put free content
i liked the flash video interface better than most streaming technologies.
I doubt it ill ever do well as a video store and i think prices a little out of wack..
how come a music video, a 30 minutes show and a hr show all cost the same
is rockey and bulwinkle in the same class as surviver? - dkarlson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't understand. Here's a link 'splaining how to play their videos on an iPod. http://video.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=32186
Also, with regards to their TV shows -- why is there only ONE CSI episode? I'm also not clear on why it says "$1.99 day pass". Does this mean that I pay two bucks to watch a show for a day? iTunes video doesn't do that..... - plkrtn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK. Maybe its just me.... or does ONE episode of CSI and 6 episodes of Voyager really count as having "CSI content"?
Its a farcical amount of content to launch a brand on! - ginty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everything about google video sucks. I didn't like it before the changes, I didn't like it after. The interface is bad, its hard to find stuff, and it is slow. I avoid it at all costs.
- Tracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hehe even most decent torrent sites are layed out better
- jla1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm serious here. Google Video is the worst online service Google has ever come up with. It just sucks so much (especially when compared to all other Google services).
- TPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they get some damn design consultants the store might be decent!
- mattmacg4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see much of an improvement.
- SpazticChips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0have to say need better interface, maybe would want to do something like the iTunes music store or something, bet something like that is in develpoment, but like google center so they can eventually incorporate a lot of other features. it's an idea in the right direction.
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like their interface for the basketball games though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sure, the pay part of Goog Vid is crappy, as an idea, but as a whole .... google video is amazing
especially the PSP content :) - rolandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Google Video. It's great. And I want it to become something really ACCESSIBLE... but sadly, at the moment, it isn't.
I can't buy stuff from Google unless I go through a proxy because I live in Mexico. That totally sucks. Google's mission is to organize information and make it univerally available. I don't understand why they have to contradict themselves there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The interface is terrible, it'd take off if they could contract few first run movies though.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple's ITMS video sales are most definatley not fleeting, as one user said.
What you do not understand is how many non-iPod users are buying this video. I do not own a video iPod but I've been buying season 2.5 episodes of Battlestar Galactica - the quality is just as good as analog cable (almost as good as digital cable), and I'll just buy the DVD's when they come out later for the best quality anyway. But in the meantime I don't even care when it's on as I just download and watch new episodes when I feel like it...
Also if you look at the comments from various videos sold on ITMS, you'll find that a fair number of U.S. citizens living abroad (like military or people working overseas jobs) are rather happy to be able to buy US T.V. content they cannot see over there.
Basically, it turns out being able to buy a TV show whenever you like with no subscription fee is pretty nice - and that is how Apple managed to sell 8 million shows in just a few months without even that much content for most of that timeframe. - scorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa! Google has videos that people actually want to watch for sale?
I though they only had those crappy free things that people who just bought video cameras excitedly put online. - Mutifus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if Google actually have any designers? ;)
- Dwebtron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just wait, when google takes this outta beta in like 10 years it'll be decent
- ImpactedColon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And hey, way to go Google. You're picking a solid partner to deliver music videos. Sony/BMG, the rootkit innovators. Way to support their effort to get ridiculous DRM schemes everywhere. I for one, am incensed that you have to download their player to get non-copy protected videos. Plus, we're still in "beta" right? So does that mean if you buy a show now and they significantly improve the quality of the encoding later you'll have to buy again? Even worse, is there even a guarantee this service will be around in a year? If you have to connect to the Internet to play these videos, are you out your money when this awful product folds? At least with iTunes you actually have the video on your iPod.
- aoctavio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is evil...
- onishenko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google: 'We made a big mistake with Google Video'
Everyone Else: 'No *****, Sherlock.' - Jarrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does the picture quality increase for videos you purchase? If not, I think anyone who pays, say 3.95 for the Lakers-Raptors game, is literally insane if the video quality is no better than the preview. I'd rather stare at a wall all day than watch horrifyingly overcompressed internet video.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I, for one, am in love with google video. The argument in the article saying that Google Video is barebones is rediculous. Google is notorious for its simplicity in page layouts. Though I dont like the current design, which took place a few days ago, I still say Google video is excellent.
- kaoru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*slow patronising claps* well done google...
On an offtopic note, fudgebrown your avatar rocks - usermac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Use "Safari Enhancer" for Mac OS X to change your default search from Google to anything else.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03 months ago everyone loved google. as predicted, the proverbial tides have turned.
- M4tt3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google is evil..."
I'll 2nd that.
Screw them. - drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its good when companies mess up and then use tha to drive traffic back to check it out again. Very smart. Remember New Coke?
- Pacabowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0diggnation is the reason for this story
- shierone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I downloaded an NBA game and the sound/picture quality was horrible. I know that may not be Google's fault, perhaps the NBA manages its own content, but Google has had standards in the past and it just looks like they have left them behind on this one - even if the layout for the NBA is nice.
- edm2001, on 01/17/2009, -0/+0They will need to focus their development efforts on Google Video.
