- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41I'd probably pay about $1,000 to just rent that car for two hours and drive around downtown with Ray Parker Jr's "Ghostbusters" blasting on the stereo.
Sad but true... - Mo0man, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!
- TheCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Too bad that isn't the actual filming version of the ECTO-1.
The original was kept in storage on the studio lot until pre-production of Ghostbusters 2 began, and it was reworked and upgraded to the ECTO-1A with 'more modern looking features,' including the LED signs, and a bunch more interesting looking junk on the top. After that, it was put back into storage but was later donated to the smithsonian and spent years in it's 'movie magic' exibit.
Technically, this group isn't lying about the history of the car, as they state 'BEFORE IT BECAME ECTO 1 IT HAD PREVIOUS HOLLYWOOD HISTORY, IT WAS USED IN "IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT,' but it is kind of misleading. I don't think there is anyone out there who would pay 160k for a car that was done up to LOOK like Ecto-1. That's like paying a premium for a delorean that's been modded to look like the time machine from 'Back to the future,' when you think you're actually getting the real thing. - crackhammer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24You live in Springfield!?
- TheCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15** Update **
Most likely, the car in this auction is actually this one:
-Taken from http://www.geocities.com/ectomobiles/
we all know the Ecto-1 and Ecto-1a but do you remember the pre Ecto? It was that black car Ray drives up and he bought so cheap but there was a lot of stuff wrong with it. Well that car wasnt turn into Ecto-1 for the movie but it is a Ecto-1 replica now. The car was rented by Columbia Pictures and there prop deptment painted black and gray. Well after production they return it but later bought it again to turn it into an Ecto-1 replica which the car is still today.
According to a much more detailed prop history site, there were actually two cars purchased by Columbia and used during filming. The second was purchased when the original 'Died' on set during filming of Ghostbusters II. While both were then sent to the Columbia backlot (which later became the Sony backlot when that company purchased Columbia Pictures in 1989) one of the two was used as an attaction at the Universal studios "Spooktackular" stage show, as another digger mentioned above. As of December 06, both cars remain in the Sony backlot, quickly rusting away as they are not even covered up with a tarp.
So technically, if the car in this auction is the 'pre-ecto' black car that Ray brings into the firehouse which was later modded by the props department to look like the 'hero' version of the Ecto-1, the auction company isn't lying as it was used for filming in the movie, and quite possibly is the same car that was used in 'In the heat of the night,' as I'm pretty sure that one was black too. It might also be the prop that I saw in the Smithsonian years ago, as it sounds like the filmed versions both never made it outside the backlot or universal studios. This is all worthless info, but it's pretty damn interesting. Now I am wondering what ever happened to the hero version of KITT. - kyle90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11$150k?
I saw one for sale for $4800
Of course it needs some suspension work, and shocks, and brakes, brake pads, linings, gearing box, transmission, rear end... maybe new rings, also mufflers, a little wiring... - scottykempf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hmmm, buy a house.....or buy a trinket of pop culture?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Got $150k you don't need?"
That's more than I spent on all that handsome cream! - FizixMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8!
Man, I almost bought it too! I have a good 200k in unmarked $100 bills... except the all-caps description made me vomit all over the wads of cash. Now I'm poor again! :( - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Lets face it, sometimes, ***** happens, someones gotta deal with it, and who'r you gonna call?
- Zyk0tiK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If I didn't have to pay bills or buy food or have money to live on, I'd totally spend all my wages on it.
- HardwareLust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Could you possibly be more of an ***** next time please? Thanks!
Your comment got exactly what it deserved. - ROFLance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@sundancekid503
There's a finance calculator... the monthly payment for 5 years @ 7% interest comes out to $2970.14/mo. Do it for a month. Do it. - squirrelza, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Gozer: [Evil voice] Are you a God?
Dr Ray Stantz: [Looks at Peter, Peter nods] No.
Gozer: Then... DIE!
[Electrocutes the Ghostbusters; pushing them to the edge of the apartment building; people below scream]
Winston Zeddemore: Ray, when someone asks you if you're a *God*, you say "YES"!
Dr. Peter Venkman: All right! This chick is TOAST!
Dr. Peter Venkman: [the team walks toward Gozer] Grab your sticks.
Dr Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, Dr. Egon Spengler: HOLDING!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Heat 'um up!
Dr Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, Dr. Egon Spengler: SMOKIN'!
[Gozer growls]
Dr. Peter Venkman: Make 'em hard!
Dr Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore, Dr. Egon Spengler: READY!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Let's show this prehistoric bitch how we do things downtown. THROW IT!

Peter Venkman: We came, we saw, we kicked its ass. - shredomatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What about the twinkie?

123 fake street, deliver to my address... - philaiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In most areas you could live in a very nice house for 150k. Great suburbs of cities like: Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Tampa, Orlando, etc. Not everyone lives in LA & NYC.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good job on actually looking at the link. It is a 59 Cadiallac.
- speedygonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you beat me by 2 minutes on that... "Tell 'em about the twinkie"
- spyder91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dicknuts classic cars, serving coeds since 1969!
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ghosts not included
- TheTrueAPlus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Somehow when I was little, that car visited the house down the street from where I lived and I got to go inside and actually see it. And this was Small Town, Ohio. It was quite a treat.
"Don't cross the streams!" - Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does it come with Annie Potts? I'd Janine her Melnitz.
- DenTPuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK, own up! How many people started singing the ghost-busters theme song after reading this!
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah yes, the George Barris version.
Once the site is un-dugg, read http://www.geocities.com/ectomobiles/
This site has photos of both ECTO-1 and ECTO-1A sitting in the Sony backlot, rusting.
I believe there were 3 cars in total, there was the black ambulance that Ray drove to the GB headquarters at the start of the 1st movie. That has since been turned into an ECTO-1 replica. There's the original ECTO-1, seen in both movies, and then there's ECTO-1A, a third ambulance turned into a GB car.
One of the ECTO-1 cars was cleaned up and used to promote the GB DVD when it was released last year, Harold Ramis sat in it during an interview.
The ECTO-1A was on display at Universal Florida, along with (I believe) the replica car, which was originally the black ambulance.
Here's ECTO-1A on display at Universal Florida:

Here's an ECTO-1 rusting out in the Sony backlot (don't cry):

And here's ECTO-1A sitting next to ECTO-1 in the Sony backlot:

Some good photos of the interiors on those pages, including all the ancient computers and control panels. - raptordrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2*****.
- BaumSquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I saw the one on the backlot of sony. I have a friend that worked at the studio and showed us around. There were lots of props stored outside from the set of Spiderman 3, but the Ecto 1 was WAY cooler!! It was so rusty and crapped up, but it didn't matter. We couldn't go inside, but I'm not sure I would have wanted to. It would have needed a LOT of work to look good, and probably just to run. I'm pretty sure it was the original one, though. The warning stickers were particularly funny, as they were just random warnings from all sorts of crap that they stuck on. The only problem was, I left my camera in my car (we were just going to a screening, so I didn't realize I'd get a private tour of the lot as well) Anyway, I got a ***** cameraphone picture in the dark of me with the door panel with the ghostbusters logo...

Awesome. - cbergeron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not only that, but I refuse to conduct business on any website that animates it's photo's with that gay fold out popup. Yuck.
- cheez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well, the next time i'm in ukraine, i'll be sure to look you up
- dicknuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I deal in classic cars for a living. A similar Cadillac wagon in good condition wouldn't go for a whole lot over $20k, even if it's rust-free and original.
- Sub7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll pay $150k if they throw in Janine
- AJQuick, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Fake.
- CMBlue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dang, I live right by there too.
- pseudoastronaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what no Slimer?
- MrPlug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still got my Ghostbusters 2 movie poster, love those movies.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"NO MONEY DOWN OR UP TO 144 MONTHS FINANCE TERMS AVAILABLE"
12 years!? - Aliasing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Actually given how popular Ghostbusters was and still is, and how much the Ecto-1 was one of the most iconic things about it, 150k isn't much for a car collector; particularly given, if I remember correctly, that it's a '55 or '56 Cadillac ambulance underneath the movie gear, which is in itself a rare and valuable car.
- daecrist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$150K for a replica is ridiculous. My friends and I have been into GB propping for a few years now, and the guys we know who put together Ectomobiles did it for far less than that pricetag. Maybe if it was the car from the movie, but in the fine print they mention it's just a replica. Someone is going to get hosed on that car.
- gridbread, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on, let's run some red lights!
- ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I say Kevin & Alex give it a go. They've got the investment capital. If not, 25 cents from every digg user and that car would make for mad publicity and a ghost free office.
- Caleb83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Coolest car ever
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ecto 1 is an awesome car, but i think $150k is a litle too steep
- andyrobo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This car should be on ebay, they would get more for it.
- AJQuick, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1"For your information, the interest rate alone for the first five years comes to $95,000."
- harmonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@everyone besides demons:
go back to 4chan plz - Towelie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hope for the buyer that the proton packs still the back of the car:P
kievescorts get a life... - nunofgs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@TheCash: you know waaayyy too much about Ghostbusters.
- nomadxx7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pick a town in Vermont. I bought mine (1400 sq. ft.) for 128k
I'd rather live in ECTO-1 tho (just kidding). Now if they threw in the suit I might have to reconsider - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+0God.. I wish I had enough. I used to be the biggest Ghostbusters fan ever.
