- EggAndMuffin, on 06/13/2009, -3/+274quote from klubberknuckle on Reddit:
"What I notice in a lot of Lucas films is how the actors kind of just stand in-scene,
teetering back and forth with a vague look of desperation,
struggling to figure out what/how they're supposed to be acting.
They can't see the set because there isn't a physical set and they can't see many of the actors because they're CG.
Without the context, the actors can't find their motivation for the scene and it ends up coming out totally flat.
edit: I guess my point is that CG has come a long way and is (in many respects) better than the old way. But it is the acting that draws you in, not the effects. And it took Lucas going totally hog-wild with the green screen for me to see this in such a pronounced way." - RicardoWilliams, on 06/12/2009, -7/+256then and now George Lucas' work has contributed to so many achievements in filmmaking, but nothing beats the Empire Strikes Back days... and the reason why those movies feel "more real even while it looks less realistic" is because that real environment gets better performances from the actor who in turn anchor the emotion and heart of the film
- chimpchimp3, on 06/13/2009, -2/+234Look, I don't think its really nice to point out how much weight Lucas as put on.
- Urrelles, on 06/13/2009, -5/+202Hellboy 2 is a testament to what we are missing in movies. It had a perfect balance of CG and makeup and models which delivered a very life like experience.
Another testament is Jurrassic Park. - paulvq, on 06/13/2009, -2/+168If you were a billionaire, wouldn't you wear whatever the ***** you want?
- Rougass, on 06/13/2009, -7/+142The Lightsaber battles got better.
- Nekura20x6, on 06/12/2009, -7/+129Wow - that picture speaks volumes. However, I think it speaks less about his love of digital effects and more about his creativity or recent lack thereof.
- LordVance, on 06/13/2009, -0/+101Is it sad that Terminator 2 is just shy of 18 years and still looks better than a lot of crap coming out more recently? Damn well done movie.
- juniorb, on 06/13/2009, -1/+86Another testament is Terminator 2.
- T8erT0T, on 06/13/2009, -4/+86An even better picture would be George Lucas holding an actual script in his hands, juxtaposed to him in the 00's just holding warm *****.
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -0/+72I'd wear the skins of the poor.
- hmunkey, on 06/13/2009, -0/+62I'd be naked, everywhere. And I wouldn't give a ***** because I'm a billionaire.
- sonofabiscuit, on 06/13/2009, -4/+65That, and the fact that George sucks a directing by himself.
- PixelMagic, on 06/13/2009, -0/+59I do anyway.
- ZeroCubed, on 06/13/2009, -4/+60All too true.
I personally prefer makeup and puppets than CGI. With CGI, movement is often too smooth, too perfect. My favorite part of Hellboy 2 was the Death Angel. That thing was an awesome creation of makeup and puppetry. It felt real and alive. Peter Jackson's use of miniatures (or rather, bigatures) in the LOTR trilogy and the work they put into sets rather than depend on green screen helped make the background become part of the story. Max in Flight of the Navigator was a simple puppet - but it felt more alive than any terminator robot. I loved ET when he was a simple puppet - I HATE the CGI ET they replaced him with when they remade and released it on DVD. I have a VCR for the purpose of watching films before they were raped by CGI.
And when you put in that much work into effects and sets, it shows how much you love the film you are working on. Directors who work with hands on effects are more in tune with their film, growing it from a little thought into a moving piece of art.
When a film relies so much on green screen, the work in totally taken from the director, and put into the hands of the CGI artists. That's like someone hiring a nursemaid or something to raise their child, only taking interest when said child has grown up. - djphilos, on 06/13/2009, -3/+57I hope porn never resorts to green screen. It already feels cold and disconnected.
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -0/+49Too much CGI ends up looking like a non-playable game demo. I love technology, but too much CGI = bad.
- dungbeetle, on 06/13/2009, -2/+51Yes but at the expense of making the rest of the movie feel hollow and fake (None of the Clones were really there and the suits were all CG. Very disappointing.)
- cfuse, on 06/13/2009, -1/+49Billionaires aren't the ones who are trying to impress others with their expensive clothes.
- carbonfilament, on 06/13/2009, -0/+48AND HES OK
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -1/+48Exactly. It's called Balance.
- sunburner, on 06/13/2009, -3/+49The major fail of the new SW was just the fact that Lucas directed them all himself and didn't allow as many script edits as he didn't in the first one. He's really more of a visionary than straight writer/director. When people fail to realize their own strengths and weaknesses within their art, the art itself will suffer and thus not reach its full potential. Perhaps it was vanity Mr. Lucas had with his own franchise.
- Nickolassc, on 06/13/2009, -1/+40That's what she said!
- SPARTACVS, on 06/13/2009, -0/+35Standing in front of a green screen adds 60 pounds.
- Nickolassc, on 06/13/2009, -16/+50That lightsabre battle with yoda was terrible.
- JoeCool1986, on 06/13/2009, -0/+32Terminator 2 is one of the best action films ever made.
- iamacyborg, on 06/13/2009, -1/+32Starship Troopers!
- nepidae, on 06/13/2009, -6/+36wow, how are ppl digging you down? The yoda lightsaber battle was a ***** cartoon in the middle of a live action movie. It would have been fine on cartoon network, but on the big screen? hell no.
- wpc33, on 06/13/2009, -0/+28YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BRING BALANCE TO THE FORCE!!!
- airwalke, on 06/13/2009, -0/+28This. Jurassic Park still looks amazing compared to a lot of the movies coming out today. It's amazing to think of the CG technology used to make the T-Rex come alive, but it's even more amazing that half of the shots featuring the T-Rex are actually a giant animatronic.
And a more recent example of Real >>> CGI is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Although the movie was not well received, the puppetry used to bring the Vogons to life there sold the character(s) extremely well. Not something that full CGI Vogons would have done. - Schmapdi, on 06/13/2009, -1/+28One thing that always struck me about the prequels vs. the originals is muppets.
The originals are loaded with em, and muppets are real, they have character and can be charming or goofy. They're played by what are basically actors, and hand crafted with love by creative and talented people.
In the prequels, all the aliens and whatnot are just pixels, and sure they're made by talented people too, but they try to be "realistic" and they wind up just lacking the spark of life that muppets have.
Muppets = better movies. And I think anyone whose seen Labrynth, or the Dark Crystal can back me up on this. - Misinformant, on 06/13/2009, -7/+34Washed-up, franchise-butchering, gimmicky hack
- Kosh, on 06/13/2009, -0/+27I think it's also in part that filmmakers today think that fancy visuals are a substitute for good dialogue and a good plot.
- juniorb, on 06/13/2009, -3/+28There's a prequel game too. Every time Hayden Christensen delivers a line with the same monotone inflection and dead-eyed stare, turn the piece of ***** off and watch The Empire Strikes Back instead.
The game ends rather quickly. - Wisgary, on 06/13/2009, -0/+25A whole star???
- Neworab, on 06/13/2009, -0/+23Yeah he put all those dwarves out of work

- Coven, on 06/13/2009, -1/+23every.single.shot in Episode 3 had one form of CGI or another.
There's a limit, George. - boombume, on 06/13/2009, -8/+30No it doesnt
