Wordpress just happens to be a very popular free platform, so you see it a lot on sites using budget hosting.

    I'd be willing to bet http://autoshows.ford.com (which runs on Wordpress - it's linked as an example from wordpress.org) could stand up to Digg traffic as well as any site out there.
