- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+35That truly sucks... seriously.... how long do you think it will take before the DRM protection is broken? I'm a big believer that if I bought it I own it. If I wish to rip the disk to run on my iPod or computer for my own viewing.... that's my own business. In a world that's decidedly moving towards DRM-free... I can't believe they are dumb enough to attempt this. It looks more like the big Sony DRM fiasco redux.
- WiseWeasel, on 11/15/2007, -0/+24I think I'll keep using MacTheRipper and Handbrake, thank you very much... Standard formats or bust.
- meshman, on 11/15/2007, -1/+24I'll stick with the copy I downloaded off Usenet weeks ago, thanks. I don't need no steenking MS DRM crapola.
- pabloD, on 11/15/2007, -0/+17DRM in any flavor = FAIL
- RyeBrye, on 11/15/2007, -0/+14I thought even Microsoft had agreed that ***** sucked when they abandoned it for their Zune. I guess Fox didn't get the memo.
- MonsterChaOS, on 11/15/2007, -1/+14DVDdecrypter and any encoder will work just fine...
- MattB123, on 11/15/2007, -0/+12DVD Fab Decrypter gets a lot of the ones DVDShrink can't.
- robalesi, on 11/15/2007, -0/+11No thanks.
- drachemorder, on 11/15/2007, -1/+11DRM is never a win for anyone except the greedy suits who get it implemented.
- FishHammer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+9the whole reason people go to a theater vs watching movies primarily on tv is because ads are ***** annoying. if i'm paying $8 it's worth it not to have ronald mcdonald shoving his ***** down my throat every 10 minutes.
- drlha, on 11/15/2007, -0/+9PlaysForSure? Handbrake it is then.
- Frei, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Product placement is as close as I want to be to ads during feature films. Sometimes that is too much even.
- rancemo, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8As if they could stop copying by other methods?
- Lindane, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7Why would I buy the original DVD in the first place?
- RobsaysHello, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6I think I'll exercise my plain old rights and let them keep their DRM. Thank you very much.
- murf43143, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6NO, this is a HORRIBLE idea and will just prove how stupid these guys really are,
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -1/+7Actually, it doesn't. There are many encryptions that it doesn't cover, that newer software does.
- sporg, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5 When I hear that some popular item was released with DRM embedded I make a point of downloading the cracked torrent and seeding it.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4Apple and Amazon have pretty good sized DRM-free music... in fact, I pretty much stick to those options when purchasing. Market will determine what happens.
- revarien, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4Where there is a will, there is a way to rip...
- shoerob, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5DRM will still fail.
- theNazz, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4Once again, the only people this affects are legitimate customers... the pirates are continuing business as usual with no regard over DRM/spy-ware *****.
- gamerzworld, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Was that really supposed to be funny?
- 80hd, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3They still don't want you to handbrake this to your iPod or create any kind of other useful rip.
- diizy, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4You guys ever notice how there was only Chevy's in Transformer? Or that Jack Bauer always drove Fords in Season 2 (I think?). Maybe you might have noticed Ads before the movie started?
Trust me, where are already many, many Ads in movies. - inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3We are talking about movies with commercials. Leave your Satruday niht perfect date out of this.
- andycr512, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3"I don't think there's anything wrong with the idea of making sure people aren't stealing your stuff,"
I won't address the theft statement, but yes, it -is- wrong, IF it restricts what you do with it. In addition, it -doesn't- prevent downloading - I can grab any movie I want off of Bittorrent, should I choose to, and no amount of DRM has stopped that or ever will.
"If Apple makes it so I can (...) do whatever I want to it without distributing it, I'd be fine."
Impossible. There's no such thing as DRM without collateral damage. - zachblume, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3that would be insanely irritating
of course, people will just release TxT files with the timesignatures of start/end times of ads during the movie, and we'll whip up a program to automatically remove them
probably not going to happen - bballbackus, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Handbrake FTW haven't had a problem yet and I've probably ripped bout 75 dvds.
- 80hd, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Totally.
They aren't letting customers copy the film. It's just being sold in two lock-boxes instead of one.
Until they release media in a format that is convertible to open source software, anything they say is arguing semantics. "Oh we believe in fair use" -Sure
How about adding their stuff to a MythTV library or ripping it to an iPod? - Elderon, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4Drm is already broke most likely. I don't even know why they bother. It would lower cost for both the consumer and the studios and manufacturers if they just cut this drm crap out already and just focus on making good shows. I mean look at whats happend with drm so far. There have been movies, music and games that haven't worked on many peoples computers and have even messed peoples equipment up because the discs had drm on them. Nothing sucks worse than having a legit copy from the store and you come home and lo and behold - it doesn't work... because of the drm. Or if it does work, watch your computer fill with spyware from the drm and the ads that are forced down our throats.
They can take their drm and shove it. I'll do whatever is necessary to watch it sans drm, whether that means ripping it or having to go to pirating websites for info on how to remove the drm so be it. - 80hd, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3No kidding.
This seems like a sidestep to the real issue of fair use.
They are still purposely limiting the number of compatible media players. - anarchyx34, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4And we werent able to copy them to HD before?
- fani, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4"Live Free or Die DRM"
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3There are always line-level rippers around for drm-free ripping, no matter what the hell the drm is this month. So what will happen is this: Fox releases DVD, 3 hours later some joker from god knows where uploads both divx and VOB rips to usenet, which then propagates to piratebay, which then propagates to everyone. Rinse, repeat.
- TheTankengine, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2So...
Will this work on Linux?
:) - aliengoods, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Or you could just download the DVD quality torrent.
- Ratteler, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2When Fox stops trying to dictate what I can and cannot do with my property, I'll consider buying from them again.
Till them, Bittorrent allows DRM free movies to be copied to any device.
You want to treat me like a criminal, I might as well act like one.
When you treat me like customer, I'll pay you like one. - pigfister, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Its still riddled with drm!
- Carv, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I thought FOX was doing something good here until the "with DRM" part.
I should have known better than to think FOX would do something good. - WhipkickeN, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2RipIt4Me is good. It's like a wizard that goes through the decrytion process and uses DVD Fab Decrypter and DVDShrink.
- WhipkickeN, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I think season five was full of Toyota and I think i recall seeing alot of Dell stuff throughout the series.
- PenguinWrangler, on 11/15/2007, -1/+3Hahahahaha....PlayForSure....Hahahahahah...omg....Hahahahahahahahahahahahahah.....wait...wait...wait...I have tears in my eyes, I can't see....Hahahahahahahahahaha
- acidbathfan, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Live Free or Die Hard is a candy coated turd wrapped in a drm shell.
- Rezistik, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2It isn't a DVD if you download it and store it on a hard Drive...
- matx, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Or could just switch on the media center, search for the movie i want to watch and press play!
locate movie.avi | xargs mplayer && echo "that was easy" - autoacat, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1dugg for Handbrake
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Lots of explosions.
Beats hell out of Lions for Lambs. - localzuk, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1I buy DVD's - but only when they're cheap. I enjoy having a collection on my shelves which I can just wander up to and grab a movie to watch. No need to have a computer on, no hassle (other than the annoying 'Don't steal' adverts on the discs).
