- CasinoJack, on 06/18/2009, -1/+234Going by this trailer, I predict that 90% of the movie will consist of shots of a light aircraft narrowly avoiding various natural disasters.
- JoeParanoid, on 06/18/2009, -5/+117The Mayans were not the oldest civilization in the world but otherwise it looks cool.
- luke16, on 06/19/2009, -0/+89Where would we be without CGI?
- kanojo1969, on 06/19/2009, -10/+87Dumbest thing I've read all day. The people who have pushed CGI to what it is today are monsters of talent and creativity, the competition between major studios is responsible for a ton of hardware and software innovations.
There's actually a lot of films that we see today that simply wouldn't be filmable without CGI. I think LOTR was the first that was generally acknowleged as being impossible without it, but these days almost everything in the 'action' genre wouldn't be possible in a computer-less world.
Transformers? Iron Man? Hollywood breathes CGI now, for better or worse.
If you go back to, say, the 70s and early 80s, look at towering inferno, the posiedon adventure, it's almost laughable how un-epic those films were, everything is boxed in to reduce the field of view, and where models are used they are so obvious it's difficult to stay 'in' the movie.
I'm not necessarily saying CGI has made film better or worse, that's up to the individual film-makers, you can't blame the technology if they use it as a crutch. But it's definitely made a huge difference for directors whose vision simply could not be filmed without it. - okayokayokay, on 06/19/2009, -0/+73Kinda reminds me of when Calvin crashed a train and plane into an old farm house:

- wonkavsn, on 06/19/2009, -20/+83Having to rely on talent and creativity.
- boredco, on 06/19/2009, -0/+58..and if they just flew themselves another 100 feet higher they'd be home and dry
- inactive, on 06/19/2009, -4/+51Hollywood is so nice these days, cutting trailers so you don't need to go watch the movie. Thanks, Hollywood!
- oldcrows40, on 06/19/2009, -10/+56Meh
- danwallace, on 06/19/2009, -0/+44That's how John Cusack gets to work.
- JoshPerson, on 06/19/2009, -3/+47It'll be a good movie to just sit and stare at without having to think too much. Those are good once in a while.
- Hypomanic, on 06/19/2009, -1/+43Really? A plane taking off barely avoiding doom with a little girl scared and being comforted? That's the EXACT scene from Independence Day. The White House getting destroyed by some unstoppable force? INDEPENDENCE DAY. Walls of water sweeping through cities? THE DAY AFTER... I'm preaching to the choir aren't I?
- rft3rd, on 06/19/2009, -1/+37I guess Hollywood had to have this release in 2009 so they could get 2 years of DVD sales out of it before it all comes true...
- linkedghost, on 06/19/2009, -0/+34did cusack just drive his car out of the back hangar door of that airplane?
- dlan4327, on 06/19/2009, -1/+33John Cusack? I love the guy but he's not the man I want facing the apocalypse.
If I want somebody to look cute & panic while making dry witty jokes I'll call Cusack.
When the apocalypse rolls round I want Arnie. - InferiorWang, on 06/19/2009, -0/+32"Get to the chopper!"
- eyepennies, on 06/19/2009, -2/+32You mean so you two could switch places?
- daschupa, on 06/19/2009, -0/+27Don't forget famous landmarks being destroyed, that will take up a good 40 minutes. Cant wait to see how the statue of liberty will be destroyed.
- eibiee, on 06/19/2009, -7/+32Yes, because creating CGI doesn't require any talent whatsoever. It's all "push butan" and magic happens, rite?
- CressCrowbits, on 06/19/2009, -3/+27Pfft. Can't we skip the whole focusing on an american family trying to escape the disaster together bollocks a la Day After Tommorrow, Independence Day etc etc and just show the world blowing up and everyone getting killed?
- TevinC, on 06/19/2009, -1/+24It appears there will be an apocalyptic wave of termites that will cause every building to collapse everywhere... even non-wooden structures...
- Mathopolis, on 06/19/2009, -0/+22snap
- folkish, on 06/19/2009, -1/+22The same place but with physically elaborate sets.
- SoundJudgment, on 06/19/2009, -0/+21Hasn't Hollywood learned... yet? When you have 60 to 100-story skyscrapers falling on top of one another... you need to show the dust. Lots and lots of endless, pulverized dust.
- zachstanley, on 06/18/2009, -9/+29I don't know if this trailer arouses even the slightest interest in going to see the film for me; the story sounds almost non-existent, aside from the typical apocalyptic "How will humanity survive?" thing. If I were going to see it for the action and special effects, I'd just turn my speakers up and replay this video over and over, cause it seems like they crammed it all into the trailer.
Perhaps this is just how Hollywood has conditioned my expectations. Prove me wrong/fingers-crossed, I guess. - Manchildcartoon, on 06/19/2009, -0/+20So Unicron will be the end of all?!
- pewpewpewpewpew, on 06/19/2009, -2/+22All highly successful movies. Yeah, why wouldn't he? >.<
Btw, I consider Independence Day the greatest summer blockbuster ever. - misterparry, on 06/19/2009, -7/+25Like OMG That movie like looks like soooooo freaking................................ *****.
- codywalton, on 06/19/2009, -0/+17this is an accurate statement.
- boredco, on 06/19/2009, -1/+18I believe that the word "furthermore" - particularly when finished with a comma - is more traditionally used when you have additional comments to add
- Wareznuke, on 06/19/2009, -3/+20no kidding. The Mayans migrated from Asia thousands of years after the first civilizations appeared in the Tigris/Euphrates area.
- yeahpurn, on 06/19/2009, -0/+17same issue I had with Toy Story.
- theutopian, on 06/19/2009, -1/+17You have a problem with this?
- boredco, on 06/19/2009, -0/+15Being across the Atlantic I felt duty bound to watch the international version: apparently we'll have to face the apocalypse all speaking German
- virtorio, on 06/19/2009, -15/+30Roland Emmerich would be far better utilised bagging groceries for a living.
- danwallace, on 06/19/2009, -2/+17I agree. MORE CGI!!!!
- error2k2, on 06/19/2009, -0/+15Just searched 2012... so the London Olympics destroy the world? My god, I knew it!
- codywalton, on 06/19/2009, -0/+13Should be renamed "The Day After Independence Day's Deep Impact... Armageddon."
- jiaoziren, on 06/19/2009, -0/+14First impression: 2012 = The day after tomorrow + Evan Almighty - Steve Carell
- codywalton, on 06/19/2009, -2/+16double meh.
- heytomkat, on 06/19/2009, -1/+15Independence Day is a part of my childhood.
- brimg87, on 06/19/2009, -7/+20People take the 2012 prophecies way too literally. Most likely it's the end of life as we know it; not the end of all life. Think about it, we're entering a whole new era of scientific understanding with stem cell research, converting our energy sources to being sustainable, the impact of a globally connected world is coming to fruition, and cooperation between nations seems to be a growing trend. In these extraordinary times we can't afford to be fearful, but instead look at the overall progress humanity has made; it's incredible. It's not hard to think that in three years time we will have another major leap in scientific innovation and that the world's economy will be back on it's feet.
- Biks, on 06/19/2009, -0/+13Jehovah Witness porn.
- stackolee, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12When you write up Roland Emmerich, of Godzilla fame, please put "director" in quotes.
- markperia, on 06/19/2009, -1/+13I don't know why kanojo is being dugg down, he has a very good point.
- harpoonhank420, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12don't fix it if it ain't brok...er wait a second
- seltaeb4, on 06/19/2009, -0/+12I'm really sorry your Mom blew up, Ricky.
- Memitim, on 06/19/2009, -0/+11No, World War Z got postponed again. Goddamnit.
- Fleagleman, on 06/19/2009, -0/+10The one good thing going for this movie so far is that it does not star Nicholas Cage....
....aaaaand that's about where it ends. -
