Bull. Even now people are buying the box sets and Serenity DVDs; I think that means it could have worked. It'd like to see how it would have fared if Fox treated it right. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 01/09/2008, -7/+140BRING FIREFLY BACK!

- derrickgossman, on 01/09/2008, -6/+93I'll be in my bunk.
- PenguinFF, on 01/09/2008, -4/+86It's a shame Firefly has such a short run. Fox didn't know what kind of gem they had... Serenity was a great movie!
- Xeniteone, on 01/09/2008, -3/+78Of course it is. Great show, horrible run. It was strange, but that's not why it didn't work. The 'Verse was a place you couldn't just fall into. You ease into it, but once you did there was no turning back. It didn't take most fans the whole season to fall in love, if only the Fox execs had watched a whole episode.
- sandyg, on 01/09/2008, -6/+79Excellent! And well-deserved, I must agree. :-)

- Pillage, on 01/09/2008, -3/+45Again....Futurama, Firefly, Family Guy, Arrested Development....
- slayernine, on 01/09/2008, -2/+38It had a very original feel from the bland mish mash of sci-fi that is available today.
- BoomShake007, on 01/09/2008, -4/+36I read the rest. But to speak of it's tv failure in such a way as if it was an inherent flaw in the series like that is a load of crap.
- honus, on 01/09/2008, -4/+34Firefly was a clever take on a sci fi enterprise (omgz see what I did there?) that had more legs than Fox was willing to give it. Star Trek is too over the top, too forced. I liked the concept of a down on his luck captain, doing what it took to survive...
...And a pilot who played with dinosaurs. "We will rule over all this land and we will call it...This Land." - waspbr, on 01/09/2008, -5/+32The problem was that the network, think it was Fox, messed up. They aired the episodes completely out of order, killing any possibility of presenting a story line.
In any case I thought it was fun, a little corky but still fun. - Paheej, on 01/09/2008, -2/+28Buried for not having Stargate on that list!
- mnmleon, on 01/09/2008, -1/+27matrix @ #1.... pft..
- thebellmaster1x, on 01/09/2008, -1/+26Oh, so true. I never saw the show on the air. But one day I had a Best Buy gift card, and I had heard great things about Firefly, so I made an impulse buy on the whole box set.
One of the best decisions I've ever made. - piesforyou, on 01/09/2008, -0/+22The series is much better than the movie!
- Daiken, on 01/09/2008, -1/+20Man, I can't get enough of Firefly and Serenity. We need another movie and Fox/Universal needs to start releasing blu-ray versions of the movie. Unfortunately Universal is gonna take a while...
- jwaycuilis, on 01/09/2008, -2/+20The Matrix higher than Blade Runner? Ha.
- Sinudeity, on 01/09/2008, -7/+24Yeah, I remember when Firefly started, I was like,
a western in space? Come on! The show was strangely
addictive. Mebe black magic is involved. - igothack, on 01/09/2008, -0/+16Serenity was named after the last battle of the war, which Captain Reyolds fought in.
- ccovert, on 01/09/2008, -2/+18That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth.
- BevansDesign, on 01/09/2008, -5/+21My theory: Fox saw the potential in the show and didn't want any of their competitors to get it. But they also didn't want to have to pay for it. So, they ordered it for a season, ***** with it so much that nobody could follow it, and then said "gosh, nobody's watching it" and cancelled it. The result: they got to kill something that could've given them serious competition without having to commit to it themselves, so they could keep on producing ***** "reality" shows.
The show could have succeeded if Fox had given it even the slightest amount of support. But they didn't even want to. - lcarsdeveloper, on 01/09/2008, -1/+16Peter: Everybody I've got bad news. We've been cancelled!
Lois: Oh no Peter! How could they do that?
Peter: Well unfortunately Lois, there's just no more room on the schedule. We just gotta accept the fact that FOX has to make room for terrific shows like Dark Angel, Titus, Undeclared, Action, That 80's Show, Wonder Falls, Fast Lane, Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Skin, Girl's Club, Cracking Up, The Pitts, Firefly, Get Real, Freaky Links, Wanda At Large, Costello, The Lone Gunman, A Minute with Stan Hooper, Normal Ohio, Pasadena, Harsh Realm, Keen Eddy, The Street, American Embassy, Cedric The Entertainer, The Tick, Louie, And Greg The Bunny....
Lois: Is there no hope?
Peter: Well I suppose if ALL those shows go down the tubes we might have a shot. - SigmaDraconis, on 01/09/2008, -2/+17Do you realize that the movie's title "Serenity" was taken from the name of the transport and cargo ship the main cast of heroes traveled in? The show's pilot episode had the same title.
- tofagerl, on 01/09/2008, -2/+16Well, BSG is very often put in a "post-9/11" context. I can see the similarities.
- vibrokatana, on 01/09/2008, -2/+16...But they are too busy watching "breaking news" about britney spears and paris hilton.
- samfishercell, on 01/09/2008, -1/+15Same. I also know quite a few people who also picked up on the show (as I did) post-series and post-Serenity. I wonder how Firefly would fare NOW, as I'm sure the fanbase has only grown.
- derrickgossman, on 01/09/2008, -6/+19Is that where you quit reading?
"...only to be revived in 2005 as the feature film Serenity (pictured), thanks to the tenacity of Whedon, the surprise success of Firefly on DVD, and a small army of Internet-based supporters." - DivisibleByZero, on 01/09/2008, -5/+18Putting Lost above Back to the Future? That's pretty sketchy.
I don't like the idea of sumitting a single entry in a top-25 list either. If this was a Firefly fan site, it would make sense, but general Digg etiquette should dictate linking to the entire list. - LMControl, on 01/09/2008, -3/+15Glad to see X-files the the respect it deserves. I think the top five is pretty close to the mark.
- Rockout, on 01/09/2008, -0/+12Some people like to juggle geese.
- apeman300, on 01/09/2008, -1/+12This list was from last summer. But if Digging this helps get a sequel...Wash thinks it's happening: http://www.scene-stealers.com/blogs/tudyk-is-prett ...
- xMedic, on 01/09/2008, -1/+12They can just start a second season from where the movie left off...
- jetx29, on 01/09/2008, -1/+10I'm slightly partial to BSG myself, though both are (were in Firefly's case) excellent shows. I definitely agree that Serenity is a better movie than could be made out of Battlestar Galactica. BSG's storyline is a bit too epic/encompassing a premise to successfully make the transition without butchering the whole thing. Firefly's generally smaller cast of characters made for an excellent movie.
- defektiv, on 01/09/2008, -2/+11Unfortunately this series hit during my time in the military so I didn't get to see it until after it was canceled. It is easily the best series ever created in my mind. I would say it was my most watched as well but there was a time, also in the military, when Billy Madison was literally the only thing worth watching. Memorized.. beginning to end.
Back on topic now, I'm sure my single voice would not have tipped the scales in favor of this beautiful part of history. It's a pure shame this thing never fell in the hands of more worthy producers, then it's genius would be easily recognized and cherished for enjoyment as well as profit. Stargate SG-1 was another sad loss, and right when I was getting used to RDA being gone. Never did get used to Vala. Wow, off topic again..
I do not doubt they could have kept the strength in that story going and hope one day it continues with all the budget it deserves. That cast should get a lot more recognition as well. They stood by the fans for long after the networks had abandon everyone and turned the lights out.
The good things in life never really stick around for very long, though. I think I'll crave firefly to the grave. - Zuggy, on 01/09/2008, -0/+9There have been rumors of that Fox sabotages their own shows. Another example was Space Above and Beyond. It pulled several writers from X-Files that they wanted back on X-Files, so it's rumored that they kept ***** with the shows times to artificially drop ratings and justify axing it.
- tdp05, on 01/09/2008, -0/+9Empire Strikes Back had a release year of 1980. 2008-1980 is greater than 25 years, and the article is Sci-Fi in the last 25 years.
- krbnsk, on 01/09/2008, -4/+13Where is Babylon 5? Farscape? Stargåte?
That top 25 list is worthless. - omnithought, on 01/09/2008, -0/+9Can't stop the signal!
- fnaqzna, on 01/09/2008, -1/+10Ya know... Jurassic Park is science-fiction.
- JohnLenin, on 01/09/2008, -1/+9I really hope the second movie rumors are true, but I still would prefer a return to the series. On a side note I think making your go through 25 pages worth of adds just to read one article is pretty damn annoying. I can't believe how tasteless some of these sites are.
- BlyNat, on 01/09/2008, -1/+8Shes my favorite gun... i call her Vera
- EntropyGun, on 01/09/2008, -5/+12Where is 2001? The same place as Close Encounters, Andromeda Strain, Alien, and Star Wars: outside of the last 25-year timeframe the list explicitly states.
They probably should have made it the last ten years, though, as seeing Battlestar Craptacula ranked ahead of Aliens, Terminator, Blade Runner and The Thing made my eyeballs want to puke. - fzammetti, on 01/09/2008, -4/+11Generally a decent list, but some problems... Matrix being #1 is ridiculous. Ok to be on the list, but no where near #1. BSG over TNG? No, sorry, I love BSG a ton, but that's not right. No B5 is COMPLETELY unforgivable, and damn near invalidates the entire list. Ditto for Stargate. But my single biggest problem? NO ALIEN?!? Yeah, I know, Aliens at #9, but that's not the same thing. I still contend Alien is the single best sci-fi movie ever made. There's certainly more science-heavy sci-fi, so if that's your big criteria I suppose you'd disagree... you know what? I'd go so far as to say Alien may well be the best *MOVIE* ever made, period. I certainly can't think of more than a handful I'd even consider over it. All that aside though, to me, it clearly HAD to be on this list. So, while I'd say they got the list MOSTLY right, Alien missing nearly kills it, ditto for B5,
- Turambar, on 01/09/2008, -1/+8plus there's an amazing parallel between 9/11, which resulted in thousands of deaths, and the cylon genocide of the human race, which resulted in, oh, billions.
i still don't understand why people give 9/11 so much weight when more people get themselves killed smoking or in car accidents each year. -
