- kinsider, on 11/02/2009, -0/+52funny how westerns decrease, then pop back up for 2 years or so
- mille716, on 11/02/2009, -2/+49How can porn only account for less than 10% of movies? They make a movie in two days and there are hundreds of different production companies.
- Elsewhere42, on 11/02/2009, -1/+47I'm shocked... SHOCKED at how long it was before Porn started to grow!!!
- DrunkenSavior, on 11/02/2009, -0/+38I'm not. As soon as people could begin watching porn in the comfort of their own homes (VHS) instead of jerkin' it at a dirty, seedy theater next to a homeless man it was bound to explode.
Pun intended. - legalskeptic, on 11/02/2009, -2/+34I would think that in the last couple years, MILF porn alone would be 10% of all movies.
- Evocati, on 11/02/2009, -0/+28Romance shrunk as porn grew.
- blackhawk465, on 11/02/2009, -0/+27R.I.P. Westerns
- madcaps1980, on 11/02/2009, -0/+24That graph reminds of a arts and crafts project I did as a kid where you pour different colored sand on top each other into a glass bottle to make a cool pattern. Just add some troll hair and squiggly eyes and that graph would be good to go.
- DrunkenSavior, on 11/02/2009, -0/+18Hmmm...wonder what was the cause of that spike in the Crime genre...
- marciot, on 11/02/2009, -1/+19Very likely a power polarity issue. Unplug your computer's power cable, rotate it 360 degrees, and plug it back in.
- pika2000, on 11/02/2009, -1/+18Hey, how come I only see 100% black graph on my computer?
- Garciat, on 11/02/2009, -1/+16Good times.

- Sewermutt, on 11/02/2009, -3/+16Dugg for porn.
- dascientist1337, on 11/02/2009, -3/+14Reality Movies are called Documentaries
- root45, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10...
No, but they also didn't have the History Channel during the Civil War. Just because something didn't exist at a certain time doesn't mean it can't report on the past now. - fattehboi, on 11/02/2009, -4/+14*porn joke, right guys!*
- jake8689, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10The Godfather according to IMDB cam came out in 72 so i would assume the success of that sparked a trend in crime films.
- avatarpalin, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9I think that was the "Young Guns" renaissance..
- Rain12913, on 11/02/2009, -1/+10Could the colors for 'Documentary' and 'Animation' have been any more similar?
- techobo, on 11/02/2009, -1/+10I think if you have that many colour deficiencies, the term isn't colourblind, it's just blind. Sorry :(
- jorgenv, on 11/02/2009, -2/+11Horrible TV is now common. Reality TV we call it. I predict reality movies on top in 5 years
- nysus, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8Actually, looks like it peaked back in the early 90s. Now if you count the net, I'd say it approaches 90%!
- Jerky1312, on 11/02/2009, -2/+10The genres on top going left to right represent the genres within the chart going from top to bottom. The color scheme could have been better, but if you go one genre at a time, its pretty easy to follow. It took me a few seconds to get accustomed to the style of this graph.
- ConfusedCartman, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8Best comment I've seen all day. Bravo.

For those with referrers blocked. - ChaosProfessor, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7In my day you could ride the trolly downtown, get a soda a popcorn and watch the new talkie all for a Nickel, and still have enough left over to get an icecream
- Atario, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Why is this not one of those buttons under the story (along with "Who dugg this?" and so on)?
- zaferk, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Films in 1908 never happened.
- guitmusic11, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7These are just professionally produced videos. If you were to take every single internet video, porn and short films would probably take up 90 some percent because you'd have to include homemade porn and crappy youtube shorts. Remember, this is taken from IMDB.
- blackhawk465, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Society was just a lot more uptight. No?
- lolwatermelon, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6"They had IMDB in 1908?"
No, but data for movies from 1908 is in the IMDB. - trs1138, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6The invention of the VCR and home video has long been credited and cited for the boom of the porn industry.
- m3arvk, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6I'm guessing it had to do w/ the technology as much as cultural values.
- murrdpirate, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6I wonder what caused such a large spike in crime in 1970....
- lolwatermelon, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6"I think people had home projectors though...."
Not nearly as many as had VCRs or have DVD players. - TM22, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Naw man, naw.
- jmdwinter, on 11/02/2009, -1/+6Poor westerns. *sniff*
- Cerin, on 11/02/2009, -1/+6Among other things...
- hmmdar, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Was porn illegal before 68 or something?
- Dinner, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5I wouldn't mind seeing this without the shorts skewing everything like crazy.
- root45, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5They give you a relative comparison between the categories. A line graph will give you better estimates of exact values, but it'd be hard to see at a glance how all the genres compare at once.
I agree that these sorts of graphs aren't the most useful for getting data, but they're great for a quick glance, which is what most people on the internet are interested in anyway. - Caleb83, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5I'm going to go with Young guns, silverado, unforgiven, and tombstone. There, that makes enough for a tiny sliver around 1990.
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5From the AP essay grading rubric:
8 – 9 (Outstanding/Brilliant) 8 = 95 points; 9 = 98 points
The truly outstanding essay differs from the good and very good ones in the extent to which it suggests brilliance, mastery, or inspiration beyond great competency. The central idea, for example, may be strikingly original, interesting or mature; the diction and/or sentence style is unusually apt or vivid. The essay may be direct or subtle in its use of the text, but it need not, however, be free from errors.
Just replace the word essay with comment. - Jerky1312, on 11/02/2009, -2/+7It's a visual graph that gives you a general outlook on trends. It's not trying to give you specific details, which you seem to want. It's trends over a 100 year period and to get a visual of data over such a period doesn't require exact numbers and percentages.
Also, your initial comment said its impossible to figure out, hence my reply trying to explain it. It's not impossible to figure out, but not as detailed as you would like. Maybe word your response a bit better. - hhmmmm, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970s_in_film#Events
