FOX Picks Up the 'Halo' Movie!!
filmwad.com — Finally, FINALLY, FOX has stepped in and snagged up the primary licensing rights for the film. What it really means, is that this movie is going to get it's sh*t kicked in to production mighty quick.

- ddizzle, on 10/11/2007, -37/+33i gotta ask, mrbabyman...you submit a ton of these gamewad, filmwad, tubewad stories that just re-purpose content from sites like variety, hollywoodreporter, aintitcoolnews, etc. why don't you just submit the most direct link?
from the digg submit page:
"Please follow a few simple guidelines to make digg a better place:
Quality Content: Is your story on topic? Make sure your story is appropriate for the topic you're submitting it to.
Link Directly to the Source: Save people time by linking directly to the original news story.
Search First: Avoid duplication by searching to ensure nobody has submitted the same story.
Be Descriptive: You're the story's editor, so explain what it is and why it's cool."- ddizzle, on 10/11/2007, -27/+21why am i getting dugg down? it's a question. mrbabyman, did you digg me down? just please answer the question, don't hide behind an anonymous method to shut me up.
- copperplated, on 10/11/2007, -10/+10I wouldn't say all of the submitter's things are repurpose, but honestly, this one here IS and not only that, but it's a third string repurpose. I'll admit, sometime's I'd rather read the repurposed article because it's usually written from a fan perspective instead of the "insider" view, and extra content is added to it, but FW got it from MovieWeb who got it from Variety. I can see if this article added something new to the original one, that's fine, but this is just blatant rip off.
- reeder, on 10/11/2007, -17/+15@ddizzle: If you are looking for direct content, buy a newspaper. This is the Internet, bro. Links are the language.
- juckman, on 10/11/2007, -27/+48Everyone, thumbs down this comment!
- sputnikv, on 10/11/2007, -9/+5if it's anything like the cinematic halo 3 trailer with the 2 kids and the bubble shield, it'll be awesome.
- Konrad9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I'll believe it when it's on Bungie.net.
I hope it will be, though. - blobzorz, on 10/11/2007, -17/+5Take a horrible game and a horrible network, and you get a horrible movie.
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Halo is anything but horrible buddy, all because you don't like the xbox or play on pc doesn't mean its a bad game, it means you are biased. Also fox searchlight movies have made plenty of movies I'm sure you liked, if it wasn't for them I'm pretty sure we would never have any star wars movies.
- sputnikv, on 10/11/2007, -9/+16***** finally
- ceralor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I'm curious what Nathan Fillion's role would be.
- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5lead grunt? jk Nathan is awesome
- grendelboogie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1yep
- YourTechSupport, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thankfully it's not a Fox /SERIES/ .
Nathon Fillians? Hmmm. I wouldn't make him Cheif, but yeah, Lead Grunt sounds good, and Summer Glau can play Kortana. (sp?)
- Brereton55, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I hope it's a good movie :D
- juckman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Considering past video game movies, I'm not getting my hopes up. But who knows, maybe producers will take this one seriously.
- Lyanto, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4I think Halo's storyline is perfect for a movie, at least much more so than other games (I'm looking at you, Doom!). The games have a style that make it seem very cinematic. If Bungie works closely with whoever happens to be producing it in the end (this story is only about merchandising rights), I think this movie will turn out awesome.
- jsully, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3The books are really quite good - if the movie has even half of the backstory it will be nothing short of fantastic.

"I think Halo's storyline is perfect for a movie, at least much more so than other games"
Not all other games. Wing Commander was a fantastic world to play in, full of colorful characters and interesting enemies. Wing Commander III was a movie in of itself; there was over 4 hours of movie in that game, if memory serves (if not, more.) Wing Commander 4 followed in it's footsteps.
So what did they do when they decided to make an actual movie?
They made a ***** ass movie with Freddie Prince Junior as the main character in a crappy plot with an ending that was worse.
Believe me, they can take any good thing and ruin it. - grendelboogie, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1books?
- chocobomog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35This deal says Fox has the Halo 3 GAME merchandising rights, and nothing more.
http://www.themovieblog.com/archives/2007/06/misleading_headlines_halo_is_not_back_on.html
While it is a step in the right direction, this does not mean the movie is back. One of the reasons the movie deal fell apart was the Microsoft demanded Fox/Universal to fund 100% of the movie but only receive 40% of the profits and NO merchandising rights. Once the movie's proposed budget ballooned past $135 million (possibly to $200 million), Fox and Universal realized the movie had to gross over $400 for them to break even and they backed out. It was too much to gamble on a movie based on game (and directed by a nobody).
Until the marketing deals become more beneficial for the studios, the Halo movie will not be made any time soon.- MrBabyMan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I was fooled, too, looking at the article. While this is not a greenlight on the movie itself, I don't think it changes the effect of this development. Fox is definitely laying the groundwork here to push the movie forward. It doesn't make sense for them to hold onto rights for a property they aren't going to produce.
- jbhannah, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Well, now Fox has their merchandising rights, and I'll be damned if M$ can't fish around in their pockets and dish out a few million in pocket change to push things forward. The director is a huge fan of the games (IMDb FAQ page), not just some no-name n00b director with no idea what he's doing, so he won't let it go wrong; and with Weta on effects it'll look badass and then some. And look at how good and popular the games are, you'll know right away that this will make money for both Fox and M$ now that Fox has a little extra cash booster from the game merchandising. PLUS, it's written by the writers of the games themselves, and Marty O'Donnell is composing and conducting the score--same as the games--which has not happened for any of the other blockbuster game-based movies.
In short, the people doing the movie actually know the game, and they are getting much closer to moving ahead on it. The movie will--not saying right away, just saying it will--move forward, and it will kick all ass. I'm calling it now. Wait and see. - jbhannah, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Well, now Fox has their merchandising rights, and I'll be damned if M$ can't fish around in their pockets and dish out a few million in pocket change to push things forward. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -1/+1They backed out because they didn't have faith in the unproven director at that budget range. Dugg down as inaccurate on multiple counts.
- jsballardx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dugg down because he said "n00b" in a sentence.
- mrgriffin, on 10/11/2007, -7/+7Hey, if FOX picked it up I bet there will be a cheap reality show too.

- Elliuotatar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Looks more like a chupacabra.
- Shatterpulse, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Gawd finally. Hopefully this breaks out of the norm and is good!
- TannerC, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2I wonder who'd play Cortana in a Halo movie. My vote is for Jessica Alba.
- joaob, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27Dugg down as innacurate.
- gwalms, on 10/11/2007, -7/+0woops, i didnt mean to give you a thumbs down, i meant to give you a thumbs up, hopefully somebody will fix that..

"There is no set date on when the film will go into production, but speculation sees the Halo 4 video game hitting shelves before that happens."
Was it not announced Halo 3 is the end of the series?
- futureisours, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4Who cares. This isn't going to be better than Doom the Movie. Ube Bell directing this one also?
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Am I the only one who didn't think Doom was *that* bad? I mean it wasn't brilliant or anything, but I wasn't really expecting much considering the storyline to the games.
It was mindless silly action, just like the games - cbreaker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3No, you're not the only one. I thought it was alright. I didn't really like the ending; it could have been better. But overall it was pretty well done; good special effects, a high level of suspense, decent acting. And although the first-person segment was a little campy, it was really a nod to all the people that have played Doom and the other first person shooters that ID software helped create. I also thought it was funny that the head scientist was Dr. Carmack =)
I think The Rock is a pretty good actor for what roles he should play: Really big dude being a really tough guy. He does it well.
The only real good video game adaptation I've seen is Resident Evil - and the first one, not the stupid second one. - mc7winkie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I thought they all sucked. And I thought his name was Uwe Boll...
- HBNDonut, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2@ spudnic
I totally agree with you. I've always argued about the DooM movie's good points. The people that come out and say, "oh that movie is total garbage!" need to get over themselves. Would you rather watch DooM, or watch Brokeback Mountain?
I couldn't care less that the story didnt match the game 100%! I liked the movie, it kept me entertained.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Am I the only one who didn't think Doom was *that* bad? I mean it wasn't brilliant or anything, but I wasn't really expecting much considering the storyline to the games.
- parax, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Anything picked up by Fox gets canceled before the camera even starts rolling.
- slightlyoffbeat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Nah. Usually they spend a bunch of money on it, the camera gets rolling...and THEN then cancel it.
- jordanlund, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7This has nothing to do with licensing the MOVIE... Fox has licensed the merchandise for the Halo 3 game.
There's an actual news story here instead of uninformed blogspam:
http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=16529 - MaXPL, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4So the Halo movie on BluRay?
- VampTheChamp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Ha, you can play halo 3 on your 360 but you need to buy a PS3 to watch the Halo movie in HD on blu-ray.
- NerveBand, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That would be extremely odd.
- EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3"you need to buy a PS3 to watch the Halo movie in HD on blu-ray."
Or any Blu-Ray player would work too...
- Audscias, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Pleasepleaseplease keep Uwe Bowl away of that one!!
- DWNamu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Hopefully Peter Jackson can still direct it.
- squirrelza, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Should games stay games?
- tubesurfer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mortal Kombat was pretty sick.
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5Will Halo the movie be as gay as the game? Someone please tell me the fascination with this game when they are so many more FPS games that are far better.
- ampmob, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4I hear ya
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3(Speaking as a PC gamer) the first one was okay, the second one is awful though.
Don't understand the obsession with them, they're not bad, but not brilliant - cbreaker, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Here, here!
- cplex, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Halo 2 single handedly revolutionized console online gaming. Your warped point of view regarding the game doesn't change that one bit.
- EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4"Halo 2 single handedly revolutionized console online gaming."

- shadowmoose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Dugg down as innacurate.
- xike, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Oh great, then at best we can expect half of a movie, much less if Nathan Fillion is casted for a role.
- teamparadox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1wtf Fillion is the man
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1He is, but everything he's in seems to get canceled
- MortimerTempest, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Halo is owned my M$. I like Apple. At least Steve Jobs isn't so greedy.
- kokuei, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And no one cares
- Nowaiman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4At least Bill Gates has hair.
- benutne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Greedy? Do you ever do ANY of your homework before posting? Bill Gates donates millions per year to charities and is in general a true philantropist and knows the value of social stewardship. Jobs on the other hand, is ever the capatalist and keeps much of his money to himself. If anything the image Jobs and Apple in general more accurately portray Bill and your "evil Micro$haft."
- teamparadox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Interesting seeing as Fox doesnt support HD-DVD...could this be the first step for them?
- agentx216, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5First 5 minutes is Master Chief getting 1 kill and then the next 85 minutes is him corpse humping.
- merrickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I would take Quality over fast production any day. Eh, as long as Uwe Boll is shot if he tries to touch this movie, then I'm neutral.
- RandoTheKing, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0So not only do I have to hear about a ***** game, I now have to hear about the ***** movie for the ***** game.
Great.- Reedan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2cry more
- MisterFlaut, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2You people are stupid. Seriously, do you never learn?
Why are you excited about this? You know for a fact it won't be any good.
Need an example? Name ONE good Video Game > Movie conversion. Just one.
Remember when you were all excited about Doom? Oh yeah, then The Rock was ***** cast as the main. The smart ones called it out first that it would suck, but you guys pressed on. Determined more than ever that this would be *the* Video game movie. Oh, then you saw it and were left utterly disappointed.
We told you so.
Just like we're telling you so right now. Halo or not, you should learn by now that Hollywood takes what's popular and makes it into a movie not because it's quality, but because they can skimp on content knowing that people like you will flock to see it...
Need other examples? Tomb Raider? Alone in the Dark? Street Fighter (lol), Double Dragon? (Double lol). RESIDENT EVIL? How about the up and coming overhyped Transformers? Not that it's a video game, but overhyped just the same.- cplex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Mortal Kombat!
- MisterFlaut, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1What's funny is I get dugg down, but you all know I'm 100% right :)
Otherwise you'd be quick to post a counter example.
It's your money. :) - Scheissen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1uh oh don't make a movie based on a video game because they all obviously suck!
You're a ***** 400lb pretentious nerd sitting in the basement just waiting to bitch at something. The Mortal Kombat movies were good.
- Azslande, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0*sigh* Still no mention of a Half-Life movie...... or Team Fortress 2.... or Episode Two.... or Portal.... C'mon Valve!

- excalibrax, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Wow Fox/Universal picked this up, I guess this means that it will be realeased in 20 movie theaters Nation wide, given no advertising, and pulled from theaters after 2 weeks of showing. I mean thats what we have become to exepct of Fox/Universal productions
Examples:
Driven
Firefly
Serenity
Idiocracy
Donnie Darko
Office Space- slickrick2k1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Only dd and office space are worth watching on your list.
- eTronicGaming, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I actually think that if any video game turned to movie would be good at all it would have to be Halo. I'm just glad they are taking their time. If they can make this one actually a good blockbuster, then people won't be so disappointed in these vg->movie conversions. Let's just hope for the best that it comes out strong (if it does come out).
- theclaw1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Fox was involved with ALL of the six major Star Wars movies. Good or not, they should easily be able to make it a box office success.
- a34ta34t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1diablo before this ***** movie thnx
- madgamer01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is completely inaccurate and misleading. The actual article is just a rehash of the news that Fox is the license holder for Halo action figures and books. Nothing about a movie.
RTFA from now on before you digg people. - aserer511, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1this plot will have zero appeal to the non gamer.
"Hey honey, do you wanna see Halo?"
"Is it about religion, perhaps a scand-"
"No its about an Indian Chief preventing a flood, but it has the covenant in it."
"Hm?"
"Yeah he's also a master chef...." - monkthehonk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0This may take a while though because first Fox is going to Invade the Bungie Studios, then they are going and make some kind of treaty where Fox gets most the money flow from the movie, and then they are going to finish a half done movie and say "mission accomplished"
- BigBucksT, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1excalibrax, Driven was an awesome movie. I might be the only person in the world who found it decent.
- M724, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Finally, my faith in humanity has been restored. At least I hope so.
- judicar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Uwe Bowl isn't involved, so there's a chance it might not actually be a huge stinking pile of ***** of a movie.
- mustard, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I'll get it when it comes out on BluRay.
- OllyHagen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Na u wont cos Blu-Ray is sh*t

watch "alive in joburg" or "tetra vaal" (just search for "blomkamp" on youtube) and you'll quickly see why he's probably the best person qualified to direct the Halo movie. kind of strange that a film buff blogger doesn't know who he is...his stuff has made a huge splash over the past few years.
