- chocobomog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35This deal says Fox has the Halo 3 GAME merchandising rights, and nothing more.
http://www.themovieblog.com/archives/2007/06/misleading_headlines_halo_is_not_back_on.html
While it is a step in the right direction, this does not mean the movie is back. One of the reasons the movie deal fell apart was the Microsoft demanded Fox/Universal to fund 100% of the movie but only receive 40% of the profits and NO merchandising rights. Once the movie's proposed budget ballooned past $135 million (possibly to $200 million), Fox and Universal realized the movie had to gross over $400 for them to break even and they backed out. It was too much to gamble on a movie based on game (and directed by a nobody).
Until the marketing deals become more beneficial for the studios, the Halo movie will not be made any time soon. - joaob, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27Dugg down as innacurate.
- juckman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Considering past video game movies, I'm not getting my hopes up. But who knows, maybe producers will take this one seriously.
- juckman, on 10/11/2007, -27/+48Everyone, thumbs down this comment!
- cyph34r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Pimp my Warthog.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21Trading Spartans?
- slightlyoffbeat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Nah. Usually they spend a bunch of money on it, the camera gets rolling...and THEN then cancel it.
- Konrad9, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I'll believe it when it's on Bungie.net.
I hope it will be, though. - MrBabyMan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I was fooled, too, looking at the article. While this is not a greenlight on the movie itself, I don't think it changes the effect of this development. Fox is definitely laying the groundwork here to push the movie forward. It doesn't make sense for them to hold onto rights for a property they aren't going to produce.
- ceralor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I'm curious what Nathan Fillion's role would be.
- SirBriggs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Nah, Covenant Idol.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Queer Eye for the Master Chief
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+16***** finally
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Halo is anything but horrible buddy, all because you don't like the xbox or play on pc doesn't mean its a bad game, it means you are biased. Also fox searchlight movies have made plenty of movies I'm sure you liked, if it wasn't for them I'm pretty sure we would never have any star wars movies.
- VampTheChamp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Ha, you can play halo 3 on your 360 but you need to buy a PS3 to watch the Halo movie in HD on blu-ray.
- jordanlund, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7This has nothing to do with licensing the MOVIE... Fox has licensed the merchandise for the Halo 3 game.
There's an actual news story here instead of uninformed blogspam:
http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=16529 - spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Am I the only one who didn't think Doom was *that* bad? I mean it wasn't brilliant or anything, but I wasn't really expecting much considering the storyline to the games.
It was mindless silly action, just like the games - logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5lead grunt? jk Nathan is awesome
- kokuei, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And no one cares
- Nowaiman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4At least Bill Gates has hair.
- agentx216, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5First 5 minutes is Master Chief getting 1 kill and then the next 85 minutes is him corpse humping.
- Brereton55, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I hope it's a good movie :D
- teamparadox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Interesting seeing as Fox doesnt support HD-DVD...could this be the first step for them?
- merrickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I would take Quality over fast production any day. Eh, as long as Uwe Boll is shot if he tries to touch this movie, then I'm neutral.
- squirrelza, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Should games stay games?
- cplex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Mortal Kombat!
- slickrick2k1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Only dd and office space are worth watching on your list.
- parax, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Anything picked up by Fox gets canceled before the camera even starts rolling.
- M724, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Finally, my faith in humanity has been restored. At least I hope so.
- EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4"Halo 2 single handedly revolutionized console online gaming."
Ya, now there are more 10 year olds swearing every 2 seconds because they think it is cool than ever! - excalibrax, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Wow Fox/Universal picked this up, I guess this means that it will be realeased in 20 movie theaters Nation wide, given no advertising, and pulled from theaters after 2 weeks of showing. I mean thats what we have become to exepct of Fox/Universal productions
Examples:
Driven
Firefly
Serenity
Idiocracy
Donnie Darko
Office Space - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2cry more
- NerveBand, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That would be extremely odd.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thankfully it's not a Fox /SERIES/ .
Nathon Fillians? Hmmm. I wouldn't make him Cheif, but yeah, Lead Grunt sounds good, and Summer Glau can play Kortana. (sp?) - cbreaker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3No, you're not the only one. I thought it was alright. I didn't really like the ending; it could have been better. But overall it was pretty well done; good special effects, a high level of suspense, decent acting. And although the first-person segment was a little campy, it was really a nod to all the people that have played Doom and the other first person shooters that ID software helped create. I also thought it was funny that the head scientist was Dr. Carmack =)
I think The Rock is a pretty good actor for what roles he should play: Really big dude being a really tough guy. He does it well.
The only real good video game adaptation I've seen is Resident Evil - and the first one, not the stupid second one. - shadowmoose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Dugg down as innacurate.
- m3mn0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No doubt...
"There is no set date on when the film will go into production, but speculation sees the Halo 4 video game hitting shelves before that happens."
Was it not announced Halo 3 is the end of the series? - madgamer01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is completely inaccurate and misleading. The actual article is just a rehash of the news that Fox is the license holder for Halo action figures and books. Nothing about a movie.
RTFA from now on before you digg people. - cbreaker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3@Lyanto:
"I think Halo's storyline is perfect for a movie, at least much more so than other games"
Not all other games. Wing Commander was a fantastic world to play in, full of colorful characters and interesting enemies. Wing Commander III was a movie in of itself; there was over 4 hours of movie in that game, if memory serves (if not, more.) Wing Commander 4 followed in it's footsteps.
So what did they do when they decided to make an actual movie?
They made a ***** ass movie with Freddie Prince Junior as the main character in a crappy plot with an ending that was worse.
Believe me, they can take any good thing and ruin it. - jsballardx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oooh I ***** myself!
- mc7winkie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I thought they all sucked. And I thought his name was Uwe Boll...
- tubesurfer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Mortal Kombat was pretty sick.
- a34ta34t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1diablo before this ***** movie thnx
- aserer511, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1this plot will have zero appeal to the non gamer.
"Hey honey, do you wanna see Halo?"
"Is it about religion, perhaps a scand-"
"No its about an Indian Chief preventing a flood, but it has the covenant in it."
"Hm?"
"Yeah he's also a master chef...." - eTronicGaming, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I actually think that if any video game turned to movie would be good at all it would have to be Halo. I'm just glad they are taking their time. If they can make this one actually a good blockbuster, then people won't be so disappointed in these vg->movie conversions. Let's just hope for the best that it comes out strong (if it does come out).
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1He is, but everything he's in seems to get canceled
- jbhannah, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Well, now Fox has their merchandising rights, and I'll be damned if M$ can't fish around in their pockets and dish out a few million in pocket change to push things forward. The director is a huge fan of the games (IMDb FAQ page), not just some no-name n00b director with no idea what he's doing, so he won't let it go wrong; and with Weta on effects it'll look badass and then some. And look at how good and popular the games are, you'll know right away that this will make money for both Fox and M$ now that Fox has a little extra cash booster from the game merchandising. PLUS, it's written by the writers of the games themselves, and Marty O'Donnell is composing and conducting the score--same as the games--which has not happened for any of the other blockbuster game-based movies.
In short, the people doing the movie actually know the game, and they are getting much closer to moving ahead on it. The movie will--not saying right away, just saying it will--move forward, and it will kick all ass. I'm calling it now. Wait and see. - forzaruler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Dugg down for double post
- EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3"you need to buy a PS3 to watch the Halo movie in HD on blu-ray."
Or any Blu-Ray player would work too... - benutne, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Greedy? Do you ever do ANY of your homework before posting? Bill Gates donates millions per year to charities and is in general a true philantropist and knows the value of social stewardship. Jobs on the other hand, is ever the capatalist and keeps much of his money to himself. If anything the image Jobs and Apple in general more accurately portray Bill and your "evil Micro$haft."
