- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+77I'm on board for The Hobbit if Pete is directing. But what's this about a second movie about the 60 years in between The Hobbit and LOTR? How about a Silmarilion movie instead?
- SteveIsTheDude, on 01/13/2008, -1/+60But Jar Jar and Gollum are supposed to do a musical number!
- Pobotrol, on 01/13/2008, -3/+61Please let this be wrong. They should film The Hobbit properly, and if that means stretching it over two films, all the better.
It sounds like a poor move to make up Middle Earth stories outside of Tolkein's texts. - inactive, on 01/13/2008, -7/+44Just as long as George Lucas has NOTHING to do with these prequels, I'm in heaven!!!
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -0/+30Knowing Peter Jackson, the Battle of Five Armies from the book will look great.
- ConanTL, on 01/13/2008, -0/+29Awesome. I'm looking foward to the scene where Bilbo escapes from the orcs and meets Gollum for the first time (riddles and all).
- d2002, on 01/13/2008, -0/+27"There is certainly no actual story told between the two books, give or take a few references in later books about conversations and journeys with Bilbo and the death of Frodo's parents."
Incorrect. The appendices has fairly fleshed out accounts of the years between the Hobbit and LOTR. I would especially love to see Aragorn's rivalry with Denethor, the rise of the king under the mountain, the battle between Sauron and the White Council... etc - kooft, on 01/13/2008, -0/+26Yeah, the expulsion of Sauron from Mirkwood would definitely be interesting.
- supertom2, on 01/13/2008, -0/+22You would need at least three films to cover the whole of the Silmarilion, however, i do think some of the stories could be turned into successful films on there own. Who wouldn't like to see a film based on the stories of Turin or Beren & Luthien, I know I would.
If Peter was not to direct the Hobbit i would love Guillermo del Toro do it. He is the only person I would be happy with if Peter decides only to be the producer - silversword990, on 01/13/2008, -0/+16'Children of Hurin' would make a good movie.
- banmaster, on 01/13/2008, -2/+16But go on forever.
- Rocketman1882, on 01/13/2008, -3/+15I'd love to see a movie for the Silmarilion... but it seems it would be very similar to a movie about the Bible... only way better and with more character development.
- goldenhearted, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10The Hobbit is one of my favorite books of all time. I remember reading it and becoming engrossed to a world with such detail and charm. As I read the chapters, the mental images of the scenes played out in my head that I could imagine myself watching a film of it.
With that said, Peter Jackson is the perfect man to do this. He was able to bring the LOTR trilogy to life in a form that impressed me. If there's one man who can translate the magic of the Hobbit, it's Peter Jackson. - Nanobe, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10This is what I've been hearing consistently from those involved: The first movie will cover the book The Hobbit, and the second movie will cover the following years based on other texts written by Tolkein. I don't think Tolkein would have minded a little creative extrapolation, considering that Tolkein himself claimed he was just a spectator of Middle Earth and didn't necessarily know everything about it. But as I understand, there's already enough information from Tolkein to cover the general events that happened during those 60 years.
- alukima, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10I have read the hobbit countless times and I am really excited for this movie. But, I really hope they don't make up new plot lines. These stories have already stood the test of time and don't need anything added to them.
- civdis24, on 01/13/2008, -0/+10I really think their should be a 10 part mini-series (like Band of Brothers) covering the Silmarilion (except each part should probably be 2 hours worth).
- Notsafetoeat, on 01/13/2008, -0/+8Not cool? Are you forgetting how popular Star Wars is?
- Cdog923, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7Better than 90% of the crap that comes from Hollywood these days.
- dxgg, on 02/05/2008, -3/+10Great! You want a cookie?
- Scrappy1850, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7Riddles in the Dark
- DickyT83, on 01/13/2008, -2/+9And just as fictional.
- zeiben, on 01/13/2008, -0/+6Sure. He can have that smeagol actor do it. He'll go and live with real dragons for a year, study their movements, and then be part of endless documentaries about how he leaps around a green room with tape all over his ass.
- jonshipman, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5I want it just for the Leonard Nimoy theme song
- Homest4r, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5I'm really hoping Jackson will direct...
- jamesov89, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5the article said he would be a producer . . .
- Xelseragoth, on 01/13/2008, -1/+690 minute movie? Did you see (or time) any of the LOTR movies?
- psyanyde, on 01/13/2008, -1/+6those riddles were the best part of all 4 books.
- goldenhearted, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5Yep.
What? Surprised that opinions vary? - Ciryon, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Yeah ..now go turn on NFL
- Cdog923, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4You fail. Only enough content for a 90 minute movie? Why don't YOU reread the book sometime. Actually, try and read it this time rather than use the books-on-tape version.
- pe5t1lence, on 01/13/2008, -2/+6DO WANT DO WANT
- mos6507, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Ian Holm is like 80. Not gonna happen.
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -2/+5yeah, because companies always work for the greater good and not their profit.
- Nanobe, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3As far as I know, Peter Jackson isn't directing them. He's producing them, but he said he wouldn't have the time to do the actual directing.
- Pixelante, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3That's a Freemason symbol. You didn't brush up on your National Treasure thingy, didn't you.
- ozroy, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3Except that happens during the Hobbit when Gandalf buggers off for a bit.
- kodax, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3So many characters..it could only be done properly as an HBO extended series. Most of the side stories would be movies in their own right. The fall of Gondolin loses all context without the history before it. Its something that could only happen in a season 3 finale.
- Pixelante, on 01/13/2008, -1/+4The writers have a right to strike. They should earn the real money, not the darn producers whose only contribution is canceling an interesting show because it doesn't earn them enough.
- control7, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3That would be Sir Ian and Sir Ian.(Mr. Holm has also been knighted)
- Calypsoaf, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3Is that really a bad thing? :)
- Cdog923, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3Isn't there an age limit to use Digg? I could've swore "gayness" left the lexicon around age 13.
- Refrag, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3I think the same thing about The Hobbit.
- QueEsAmor, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3No, that means the editor replaced words that were already there. [Peter Jackson] probably used to be just "him", and [but] could have been a whole sentence that wasn't really needed.
- DagMX, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3yeah, it would be one kickass movie. Treachery, deceat, incest(not cool, but would make an awesome plot line), dragons...
- zeiben, on 01/13/2008, -1/+3I have to agree with alamandrax here. I loved the trilogy films, but it's not like someone else couldn't rock at it. I got so excited when rumors about Guillermo del Toro stepping in started surfacing. Lots of ways to skin this cat
- Hoogs, on 01/13/2008, -1/+3Fail.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/13/2008, -1/+3Dude, i don't care for LOTR and all...but you're a dumbass.
Lets look at a few movies that were extremely long, and made huge piles of cash. Titanic, biggest movie of all time (how long was it? over 3 hours?), Schindlers List, Pirates of The Carribean 2 and 3 are close to 3 hours long. EVERY LOTR movie, close to, or over 3 hours long. There's no ***** way they'd make the Hobbit an hour and a half. - dn11, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2eh... I don't know. "a narrative bridge" that doesn't really have much existing material doesn't sound very promising to me. maybe some Tolkien geek can enlighten us, but what happens between the two stories that is worth making a movie about?
- bpeacock22, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2I would like for the sequel to be about that period of time when Gandalf went away during the Hobbit. What he did with the Necromancer would be intriguing to learn.
- banmaster, on 01/13/2008, -1/+3They didn't make The Hobbit simply because (in Peter Jacksons words) "why do that when you have LotR?"
