minimum sentence for first offence rape in california is 36 months, not 3. maximum sentence for willfully infringing and distributing copyrighted material is 36 months, maximum of 12 month for infringing and not distributing. There's a HUGE difference between a mandatory minimum sentence and a maximum sentence. You really should do some quick research (a la google) before running your mouth. - erikpemberton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The reason that guy was gone after so zealously was because he leaked a WORKPRINT, not a DVD screener, not cam-shot, none of the usual crap, but a Workprint. In terms of piracy, a Workprint is a Big ***** Deal to studios, because that means someone on the inside of the industry is responsible for leaking intellectual property. This is more of a serious offense than someone just dragging a camera to their local theater, or buying Asian silvers on the streets of Chinatown. Trust me, Fox wasn't exactly civilzed when they found out this was happening. Other Workprints have had similar results - Napoleon Dynamite, Soul Plane... but not with as high a profile as SWIII. No studio wants a Workprint released, especially since a lot of times it's an incomplete film, with effects shots missing, or scenes that have been deleted left in. A Workprint is akin to watching dailies of a movie. It's no surprise that they are making such a huge splash in the media about it. As far as the "I was gonna buy it anyway" way of thinking... that doesn't always justify the act of piracy because a lot of studios count on the income of box office sales to judge whether or not a film should be released to DVD, the time frame in which it should be released, and which extras to include. This is why you see a lot of smaller, independent features taking years to come out, and then having paltry special features, whereas major studio pictures will have a 4-month shelf life before hitting DVD and then come with a huge array of crap stuffed into 2 or 3-disc DVD editions. Look at Charlie And The Chocolate Factory or Robots - both of those did pretty well at the box office, and both DVD's have come out within 6 months of theatrical release with tons of extra features. Well, C&TCF comes out in November, but you get the idea. Piracy is a lot more than "***** the studios, I'm a cheap bastard and I'm entitled to everything I want in life," which is how most people come off in responding to a story like this.
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1rape is three months?
why dont you pull your head out of your ass for once and realize it is much longer (not long enough in my opin) but dont compare stuff you dont have a clue about - AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3OMG rape a bitch get probation copy a movie get 3 years prison
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Owned. :)
- mrshll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, apples and oranges people. But still, it's kinda lame. But whatever, they didin't cover their tracks, I guess they were asking to get caught...
- Shadowsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uploading a movie for thousands do DL (79% will buy anyway) is nothing compared to rape! Come on, rape will cause physiological problems let alone most likely ruin the persons life. A movie download will cost a movie company like but-kiss(very little) And of most pirates are like me i usually buy the movie (If i like it).
- utch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good for these guys! they deserve it!
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just shows that all governments are messed up.
Rape = 3 Months tops
Pirate a movie (that you're gonna buy anyway) = 3 Years - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OH, but regardless, Piracy is wrong, and against the law. But really, this is a bit extreme.
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just a couple things, one, there were a few spelling errors in the article, and two, you guys have it wrong, you do not get three years in prison for downloading a movie, you get 3 years for putting that movie up on the internet for thousands of others to download
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MONEY MONEY MONEY is also what boot leggers focus on.
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0utch:
and yet i and millions of people somehow dont feel bad about it.
but we would also never go into a store and shoplift. - canon66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Copyright infringement isn't stealing(theft), it's copyright infringement, a crime in it's own right.
- dozer2k5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to long of a sentance
- utch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't matter stealing is stealing!
- rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's important that this crime be procecuted because Lucas Film will go broke unless these people are in jail.
- XorSystem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY
isn't that what these companies focus on? - Squeegee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So that is where that copy came from! Good quality actually..
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"one, there were a few spelling errors in the article"
Where? - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the place where I live, but hate the people in charge. America is a great country but it seems to be getting worse everyday with all the stupid copyright laws and all the other *****.
***** THE GOVERMENT/MPAA/RIAA/ - sparty1969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I sure whish some one would have "internet pre-released" Ice Princess. Now I have to wait 2 months before its on Ebay for $1.98.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ canon66: it says right in the article "he unlawfully took a screener copy of the film (intended for review purposes only)"
Physical property was actually taken, then it was duplicated (making it also copyright infringement). So it could technically be both, I suppose. - sandrino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares that they leaked that piece of crap? None of the prequels have been worth watching for free, never mind paying for them! If the ***** writing or the awful acting didn't hurt the movie, the leaks surely didn't.
- chicagobiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Welcome to the United Corporations of America people. We have hundreds of thousands of people too poor to run from a storm and what are our government agencies doing to help us? Protecting the profits of movie companies!
- pondster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is absolutely crazy! Total BS - No one was hurt, I watched this video and still went to the theater and saw ROTS several times, I even have the official DVD pre-ordered as I am sure most of the other fans did as well. Lucas got his money and so did everyone else so what if you were able to download it the day before - I dont think it stopped anybody from paying to see the movie.
- pcyopick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""Welcome to the United Corporations of America people. We have hundreds of thousands of people too poor to run from a storm and what are our government agencies doing to help us? Protecting the profits of movie companies! ""
What an idiotic comment. Just because you don't agree with a law doesn't give you the right to break it. They did the crime, and are now doing time. It isn't about protecting profits, it's about illegal activities. Just because your stealing 1s and 0s on the internet doesn't mean it isn't stealing. People have the right to protect their own property.
To say that your government cares more about piracy than people dying is just plain crazy, simplistic and insulting. - mortal-god, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah the sentance is wayyyyy to high. But at least they are going after the real pirates instead of some 12 year old kids who downloaded it.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you don't want to get in trouble for disagreeing with our country's laws about intellectual property and copyrights then don't break them. Just boycott the products. As it is, you're just gambling with the risks vs. the rewards. Either the content is worth paying for, and you pay, or it's not worth paying for and you either a) don't use/see/buy it or b) break the law and get it anyway...risking jail time and fines.
These guys deserve jailtime for what they did. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0should have used a public wifi connection...
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All of you geeks to gave me probs for the rape comparison, it was an exaggeration. Lookup the word. Thanks.
- Darthpip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They didn't lose any money. People who pirated it liked Star Wars, and probably saw it on the big screen anyway.
- eN1X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All that trouble just for Episode III...
Why the hell would you risk getting caught and going to jail by uploading any "borrowed" movie to the interweb? I personally would have kept it to myself and teased my friends with it! But hey, I'm just a greedy bastard by nature... =P
Oh, and if you know that one or more of your friends likes to pirate stuff to the net..just don't give him/her your special "borrowed" contraband! That way you are still in the clear for the most part. - don2779, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Welcome to the United Corporations of America people. We have hundreds of thousands of people too poor to run from a storm and what are our government agencies doing to help us? Protecting the profits of movie companies!"
So am I to expect a total shutdown of government as a result of recent events. These people have a job to do, thats what we pay them for. If you are not down there throwing sandbags or distributing food the best thing you can do is to go on your day to day life. The worst thing you can do is sit at home on your couch and bitch about it.
As far as the downloading, I saw the film and I knew the risks. I'm sure they did too. - don2779, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY
isn't that what these companies focus on?"
I guess you get paid in skittles? - geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What these guys did is wrong, and when you get caught you pay the price, whatever it may be. I'm sure they knew the possible consequences of their actions. They've played the piracy game and lost. Do I think they should get 3 years in prison? No, of course not. But that's up to the judge to decide. Since (to my knowledge) they didn't sell what they stole, their punishment won't be the maximum.
