screw the blog spam - skankyBacon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Ebert's had his reviews available online for a long time, and they go back to 1967, but this will definitely be useful too.
- PunkPortrais, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Seems like a lot of dicks posting that this sucks or is too late. I messed around on this site last night and loved it. You have to understand something- Siskel and Ebert were an institution and when it came to new movies the country awaited their approval. Was it always right? Of course not it was opinion. But those two guys knew what they were talking about, could back up their points with valid arguments and (like it or not) were usually right. And it was great when one liked a movie and the other didn't and to see them argue their points. It made you want to go out and form your own opinion about the movie. This is a great update to their site and I know I'll get a lot of use out of it. Damn you people are cynical.
- CornStarch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That's why you can watch the entire review and see what they say about it, sometimes that say "rent it" or "I didn't like it because I personally don't like____". BTW there is no "neutral" It's 2 thumbs up, two thumbs down, or split.
- SpeedoBurrito, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That's why I use Smart Popcorn for my reviews. Peer reviews based on two levels of rating that aren't limited to a thumbs up or down. They use a scale of 1-100 and on the Cinematic and Entertainment value separately. I know they are in the midst of revamping the site, so it is only going to get better. I can't wait until it's released.
- MewTwo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I know wtf? How is this site "too late." Eberts' had his chicago sun times site with a TON of his reviews for god knows how long... and they've published so many Siskel and Ebert books...
A video site and it's too late... except.. last time I checked they're still making movies. - MaynardJK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Why? I think a "see it or don't see it" approach works just as well as some arbitrary number when it comes to something as subjective as a movie review.
- celeb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Now if only all movies reviewed can be shown on demand in an itunes-esque format.
- jjpertusch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3***** YES. i find that, although my tastes and judgment of movies are not the same as Ebert, I can gauge what i'll think of a film based on what he says and what type of movie it is. he's consistent and true to how he rates movies. he's the perfect match in movie reviews for me. I dont follow his decision to see it or not, i use it to make my own. After all, isn't that the point of any review?
- cRmtIMe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3***** you amanda congdon! and ***** the member's project!!
- punchinelli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ebert is pretty darn accurate. Moreso than most movie reviewers. His star ratings are sometimes scary accurate. His reviews are entertaining as well; he can pick apart a movie and determine the exact moments or feeling or situation that a movie propelled itself into 2-star, 3-star or 4-star territory - and he can also bring the well-written and often laugh-out-loud funny hatred. I usually combine Ebert's review with the overall consensus of Rotten Tomatoes to see if a movie is worth seeing or not.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yes, it's a search-type site divided into movie titles / actors and goes directly to video reviews.
- sfpfc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Occasionally I will use them to help pick a movie for me (although not always do I agree) but I have better results with Yahoo movie reviews because it polls everyone, not just one or two reviewers
- CornStarch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well I wasn't watching "The Hill" when I was 10 so this will come in handy when deciding on an older movie. They've had the newer reviews online for some time now.
- MaynardJK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think you mean Siskel. That or something happened to Ebert that I haven't heard about.
- pdxuser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Heh, watch them give Independence Day two thumbs down, and then have to defend themselves the next week (it happened)!
- Lasereth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I've been reading Ebert's reviews for years. If you want a star-rating instead of a thumb rating, go to www.rogerebert.com . His reviews on there give the star rating instead of the old school thumb rating. Ebert is right about 95% of the time with his reviews. I can't vouch for Siskel or Roeper though (I don't regularly read their reviews). It's really encouraging to see Ebert back to reviewing movies after his medical hiatus. I saw Transformers based on his positive review and I wasn't disappointed (even though many other critics said the movie was bad).
- Jerim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I tried out a few, and they were all videos.
- DrMickhead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sorry, that was a little vague. He has thyroid cancer and he literally can't speak now.
- Erowid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Looks to be video... Low bandwidth at work so haven't really watched it, but looked to be loading flash thinger when I clicked to view a reveiw...
- McTendo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This site is blocked at my work, can anyone tell me if the database contains video reviews? I always loved watching them argue over a movie, the charm would be lost if the database was all transcripts or summaries of the reviews.
- sv650touring, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't be a douche. Read his review of Armageddon. If that doesn't make you a fan, then you simply have bad taste and should probably just stop bothering with reviews.
- skankyBacon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. They give thumbs down all the time.
- flexmentallo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Great news!
- Lasereth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That movie sucks
- in2deep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2This should be interesting....something to check on here and there
- MewTwo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well Ebert hasn't been on his own show for a long time. Either on a vacation or ... misc
- LizardonaStick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Nothing but Flash script errors. Nice work.
- ayeroxor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2For that matter, screw professional reviewers. Since the advent of imdb.com, I can see what real people think about the movie, not these stuffed shirts.
- notoriousbhb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0For a quick summary of Ebert & Roeper's thumbs up and down votes, see http://kplusb.org/ebertroeper/.
- ColonelT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Here, here. It's amazing how someone I'd never heard of before 7:30 tonight could fill me with such rage and resentment.
- Thorpe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It would be good to get some permalinks for each video reviews. So, then users can simply link straight to a particular video. Better yet - let users embed videos.
- ColonelT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Siskel looks pretty ill during the reviews toward the end of his life..."At First Sight" was the last one I could find, filmed a month or so before his death. As a life-long fan of the show, that review is hard to watch. Also see "You've Got Mail" and "Star Trek Insurrection".
- DangerMouse9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Well thank you Captain Bleeding-Edge for your insightful, albeit at least 9 comments too late, thoughts.
- DangerMouse9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0What do the movies they liked have to do with precision? How can whether you liked a movie or not have any bearing on precision?
- DangerMouse9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0That's what movie theater butter will do to you.
- aflaks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+020 years worth of lame opinions, YIPPIE!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Video isn't aligned correctly in the flash player.
- flaterates, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Two thumbs up your ass paid for movie reviews. Paid shills for the MPAA.
- loqqq, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1I'll be movie reviews also would be much better if we shut down the Internet.
- bte101, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0I spent some time last night watching reviews of geeky series like Star Trek, Star Wars, and the Matrix.
As I watched the reviews of the Star Trek series, it was sad to see both Siskel and Ebert's health decline over time, especially while watching Siskel review ST:Insurrection. It seemed to me he gave it a thumb's up because he was obviously very ill and liked the idea of a planet where nobody was old or sick. - pagancollective, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3I think the three-tier review system (thumbs up/down/neutral) doesn't leave a lot of breathing room or accuracy in reviews.
- DrMickhead, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2I don't think Ebert's announcing anything these days...
- pascalosti, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1I am a sikel and ebert hater, I am convinced they get paid to give good reviews. Usually when I see " siskel and ebert give it two thumbs up" I choose something else.
- Vandango, on 10/10/2007, -10/+420 years of movie reviews online about 10 years too late.
- alexanEmpire, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3Yup.....slow day in the Digg news room.
- Gabberwok, on 10/10/2007, -8/+0Why do we need to see their reviews? Everything is two thumbs up, even if it is an unmitigated piece of crap.... IMDB and rottentomatoes will eventually put these guys out of a job.
- otheruser, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1Their reviews are about as shallow as their reviewing-technique (thumbs-up/thumbs-down). Anyways, they're very late.
- mswope, on 10/10/2007, -10/+220 years of people telling me what movies they liked?
I always said my career progression will go like this Engineer > Weather Forecaster > Movie Critic moving from more precise to least precise... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+4Maybe I do need that hole in my head afterall...
