- bobsbones, on 11/22/2008, -0/+36How the ***** are most of these classed as 'easter eggs'?
- TheBadAndy, on 11/22/2008, -1/+29Explain to me exactly how replacing the squid with a nuke would in any way result in the russians not wanting to attack the US
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -3/+24Every scene is gonna look exactly like the novel, which is exciting.
- QEDemon, on 11/22/2008, -4/+21I wonder if the Blue Man Group worship Dr. Manhattan.
- cobalt8888, on 11/22/2008, -0/+12My thoughts exactly. It's not an easter egg if it's just taking straight out of the book.
- TugofWarVeteran, on 11/22/2008, -2/+13As much as I hear talk about a nuke in the end, I don't believe it. That's exactly what Veidt was trying to avoid: nuclear war. If that's the case then pretty much the entire plot would have to be changed and, if the attention to detail in the trailer is any indication, I don't see Snyder going that route. I'm hoping it's intentionally leaked misinformation. However, even for the far-out nature of a comic-book, the ending caught me totally by surprise and, if it stays in the movie, it might leave a bad taste on the tongues of those who never read the book. Reminds me of the frogs in Magnolia.
I can't believe someone counted the stars on the flag in the trailer... And they accuse Snyder of having OCD. - Shadoblak, on 11/22/2008, -0/+11Honestly, if it's not a non terrestrial threat of some kind, it just won't work...in the story tensions were so high only something bigger than everyone would calm tensions...the artists and such were working on the squid...with a bomb or framing Manhattan, you need no artists, writers, biologists, etc....And then Comedian doesn't look into that, so you have to change that to....Ever pull a loose sweater thread?
- bonk2k, on 11/22/2008, -1/+10Why would a support group for depressed men worship him?
- H3BR3W, on 11/22/2008, -0/+8Except for that last one.
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7Every thing I hear about the MPAA makes me hate them more.
- kinseyincanada, on 11/22/2008, -4/+11i swear to digg, that if Snyder changes the ending to something that sucks, )it doesnt have to be a squid it just has to be a monster of some sort.) I will hunt him down.
- quasipolymath, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6He created them in his image.
- sindex, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6Yeah, I mean why care about the whole ending of a nearly perfect story when you can change it to something that makes absolutely no sense? Oh wait... right..... /facepalm
- newbill123, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Maybe McDonalds will have a co-marketing tie-in with McDonaldland characters?
Hamburglar == Rorscharch
Dr. McDonald == Dr. Manhattan.
Mayor McCheese == Ozymandias
Grimace == The Comedian
Officer Big Mac + Birdie the Early Bird == Nightowl & Silk Spectre
The Minutemen == The French Fry Goblins
They'd either have the squid replaced with a Filet-O-Fish or a completely different ending would be constructed. - Beatmiser, on 11/22/2008, -2/+7Rosebud is a sled.
Also don't look for pity when we are working with over 20 year old material. - dylio, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5Rorscarch is so badass. I forgot why I fell in love with Watchmen
- Mujokan, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4The hint was "spoilers ahead" in the description.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4"Why so serious, Nite Owl? Well, probably because what he's screaming about isn't snow, it is in fact the scattered specks of a beloved friend. Which one? Now that is hard to tell. Many have speculated that Snyder may have changed this ending as well."
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO THEY MIGHT NOT KILL RORSCHACH! - carpeclunes, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4What a bummer. You shouldn't have paused Citizen Kane to check digg.
- Remelox, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Don't know why you got buried for an Arrested Development reference.
- KingGorilla, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4and it was good
- PaulRay, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5Wait... Rosebud was a... Awwww MAN!!!
- ChefEspeff, on 11/22/2008, -2/+6Digg up if you think Rorschach sounds TOO badass in a Dark Knight sorta way. *grumble grumble grumble*
- whatthefu, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5Apparently moments where you go "oh hey I remember that from the book" count as easter eggs these days.
- PaulRay, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4I don't know about that, I think it's a smoke screen. The squid was preceded by a huge Psychic EMF type effect. Seems to me, Zach Snyder doesn't want to tip too much, it'd ruin it for people who haven't read the book.
- danwallace, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Roarshark?
- JonTheGoose, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Change THAT part of the ending?! He wouldn't....he COULDN'T!!
could he? O.o - M1N3R, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3if he does change THAT part were night owl's friend dies, i will hunt, torture, and kill snyder. my anger will be so great dr.mahattan will cower in fear
- PaulRay, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3I'm with you on this, I think Snyder's playing certain details very close to the vest. After all, there are people who will want to see Watchmen who haven't read the book. It'd be stuppid to reveal the ending.
The flag is actually kinda obvious, the layout of the stars gives it away, you don't need to count them. - ChefEspeff, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Rorschach*
- Beatmiser, on 11/22/2008, -3/+6I want so badly to believe that the new ending will have the resonance of the squid. But I don't see how it can. The pure insanity of it struck the book with the realism it needed... in a bizarre way.
- quigles3000, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Um, guys? The changed ending has been confirmed. (Source: http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/20 ... )
There's no squid. There never was any squid. Only one ending was ever filmed, and test screenings revealed what that ending was. Ozymandias creates a machine that replicates Dr. Manhattan's energy source (or something like that) and uses it to set off various energy-based explosions across the world, framing Manhattan in the process. The world is forced to unite in order to prevent any "impending attacks" from him. Thematically, the ending is intact. Only the means for which it is presented has been altered, and in my opinion, it's for the better.
The giant alien squid may work in the comic, but as far as a nearly 3 hour film goes, randomly introducing a creature like that at the very end would just feel bizarre. This changed ending helps the film come full circle, bringing us back to the only person on earth with any real superpowers: Dr. Manhattan. The film format really benefits from this type of synergy.
If you still want to complain though, at least wait until the film is released so you can see how the new ending is executed. - isayre020888, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3But did he do it in the past, future, or present? You can never tell with that guy.
- Sublex, on 11/22/2008, -2/+5OH GOD.
THE ANTICIPATION IS KILLING ME. - Mujokan, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Dr. Manhattan also has to have left the Earth by that point.
- aherman, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2I love Mayor McCheese.
- ldner77, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4dugg for muse
- madfrogurt, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2So you think the ending conundrum of sacrificing a city to preserve a world society is going to be lost when the squid is changed to, say, a sonic bomb and a UFO flying away? No one knows what the ending is going to be and idiots like you are already claiming any ending not featuring a GIANT PSYCHIC SQUID ruins the story.
- isayre020888, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Man I gotta read this one more time before the movie comes out.
- idiotsavant, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2God bless io9 and their ability to milk every last drop out of something.
- darthvalium, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2lol @invisible wiener.
insanely stupid. - bonk2k, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2I really need to read Watchmen again. I'm reading some of these spoilers and just thinking to myself "wtf are they talking about." The story was just so mindblowing and it swept me so fast that none of it had time to really stick in my head.
- isayre020888, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Personally I thought he didn't sound gravely enough. I imagine him to have a much gruffer voice with the mask on. His word bubbles were just so squiggly.
- bat-21, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2The poster is a Nagel but it's backwards. http://www.herndonfineart.com/images/Nagel/nagel_c ...
- t3hmyth, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Good that you had the correct foresight.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2oh no. they might not have killed Rorschach in the end!
that would ruin so much... i understand the squid but rorschach neeeeeds to die! - Synn, on 11/22/2008, -2/+3Do you post that in EVERY Watchmen article that hits the front page?
- H3BR3W, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2Magnolia frogs ftw
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -2/+2this is a comparison between the novel and the movie
http://lulcat.com/2008/10/10/watchmen-novel-vs-mov ... - madfrogurt, on 11/22/2008, -4/+3Want to know why Hollywood directors stop listening to fanboys and try to satisfy a main stream audience? A main stream audience doesn't get up in arms over a goddamn squid.
