- AimlessAbyss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43This doesn't suprise me. I expect this to make at least 100 million during its run at the box office. I plan to go see 300 on the IMAX screen in Canada, since there are no IMAX's near where I live.
- joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -8/+44I count for one in a sold out audience. That movie was amazing. Plot wise, perhaps a little thin, but we all know the point of it is to watch the most bad ass society that's ever actually existed rip the ***** out of thousands of Persian soldiers.
- BrainCore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35 In the sold out theater I was at...
1. People couldn't stop cracking up for the first 30 minutes (especially the sex scene). It was hard to take the movie seriously at first, but eventually the room was dead silent with suspense and eyes locked on the screen.
2. Persian groups were handing out fliers regarding the movies inaccurate representation of them... haha... - rboyce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Madness?!? THIS IS DIGG!!!
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29THIS IS DIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24"That guy with a eye patch sounded just like a pirate."
Fighting warriors from Asia, wearing face masks and wielding swords. If the Pirate vs. Ninja allegory was lost on you, I don't know what movie you were watching. - pwallroth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I saw it front row at midnight on Thursday, had no idea so many people were gonna be there. Surprisingly front row didn't ruin the movie, just made ***** more intense.
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27I watched the first IMAX showing of 300 in the town where I live. It was the only showing not sold out when I bought my tickets.
The film, incidentally, is brilliant. I'm planning on going to watch it again in the near future.
Best line for me (other than "this is SPARTAA!") was "Hell of a good start!" spoken by a British actor as if he was talking about the unlikely scenario of a first day test match whipping of Australia whilst slaughtering Persians left right and Centre. - Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I know what you mean; best line was when Leo was eating an apple and with his mouth full, going on and on about "how Spartans are civil."
- synthox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23So much for the MPAA boycott.........
sigh - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20There are some films that must be seen in the theater.
- AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Here is what I said about 300 in another Digg comment:
I just saw the movie, also, last night. I was impressed at the amount of historical fact used. Of course they exaggerated a bit (giant war elephants and weird beings), but overall the movie was excellent. I was afraid that it would be just another hyped movie, and turn out to be horrible, but I think it stood true to its nature.
The effects were absolutely stunning, and yes there were some utterly disgusting parts, but the overall movie gave me a sense of pride when I walked out of the theater. The actors did a very good job and I think Xerxes was portrayed in a way that was very fitting for his historical character.
Overall, I really liked this movie, and I think any who are doubtful should go see it for the message it is trying to get across (the courage of the Spartans), and not for the amounts of violence.
That movie was amazing. - Blackbow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Loved it.
I thought there were some editing choices that could have been better done, but overall a great big screen experience. The acting was top notch, especially Leonidas and the actress who played his wife.
I love Leonidas' wife. OMG what a babe! - mustache, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15This isn't a sequel to Gladiator. I liked Requiem for a Dream better, who gives a *****?
- Flanker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Come on, I saw it and liked it, but the best movie ever made? You gotta be kidding.
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14One thing that was funny was close to everyone in my sold out theater cheered and clapped when Leonidas' wife stabbed that guy after telling her she was a whore.
- reb42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This a movie very worth seeing in theaters.
- Clbck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16You were seriously expecting a deep and intricate plot?
- t3hNinj4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I watch movies and TV on the computer all the time, but 300 is the kind of movie that really needs to be seen on the big screen. Watching a crappy 700 MB shakeycam version of it on your 19 inch monitor kind of defeats the purpose of watching that kind of epic action movie.
Well you're at it, go ahead and watch Lawrence of Arabia on your iPod nano, or the Lord of the Rings trilogy on Youtube. - mustache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Or you could, you know, buy it.
- trixnfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I disagree with the smart comment.
They're totally missing out watching this at the theaters. - Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I saw it Friday night at 7:30...theatre was pretty packed, but I'm not sure if it was sold out. However it finished at quarter to ten, and as we left the theater there was a massive lineup sitting down in front of the ticket validater, Star-Wars-Fanboy-like, waiting for the 10 o clock showing of 300. So it was pretty popular.
I got pulled in with the hype, but I knew somewhat what to expect from the reviews I had read about it being nothing more than "stylized violence". And it was good that I had both perspectives; it certainly was a one track movie about fighting and death, and there wasn't a lot of depth to the characters (plot was a bit simple too), but what do you expect from a story that is, literally, ABOUT one battle? The movie is about fighting, and for god's sake it took place 2000+ years ago. Heck, it's based on a graphic novel. It wasn't a film masterpiece but it was a thouroughly entertaining two hour movie that was fun to treat myself to on the weekend. - kushed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12That guy with a eye patch sounded just like a pirate.
- ts8lemonade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I consider the lack of stars more of a plus nowadays. I'm tired of seeing the same old people play the same old roles all the damn time.
- JJCDAD, on 10/12/2007, -14/+22Just got back from seeing it. Visually it was everything I had hoped it was going to be. But that was very little story to stretch over 1:57. *shrug*
I think I just expected it to be more fast-paced. Some parts seemed to drag a little. I give it a B grade.
/reviewer immitation - cr125er, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I saw it at 2 in the afternoon on Friday, and the ***** was packed. I can't imagine how busy theaters will be this weekend.
- bobgb4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10i thought it had a bit of an unusual mix of comedy and seriousness
- tenrec, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9One of the best parts was the "Harry Reid" character getting what he deserved in the Senate!
- rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6smells like a spartan in those packed theatres too...
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6LOL, good point :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All I can say is that if you hated the parts in Gladiator that had the indistinct (probably high) desert lady in the background singing with slowmotion of wheat fields, DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. There is about 30 minutes of movie expanded into probably 45 minutes because of slow motion.
And the thing that bothered me the most is that some of the fight scenes were shot in a very low framerate, like 8 FPS, or were at least edited that way, like the opening battle in Gladiator. Sure, it looks cool, but I wanted to see bloody fighting and guts flying, not jerky camera motions. - fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its not even on bittorrent. All are fakes.
- Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"I saw it in Toronto, Amazing movie. Although, I didn't hear much about it until the opening, and the theatres weren't packed at all. I should've bought IMAX tickets."
The Toronto downtown Paramount's evening IMAX shows were sold out over 10 hours in advance, and the evening non-IMAX were sold out between two and five hours in advance (as I found, while trying to buy tickets for myself and various friends on movietickets.com). Maybe you were at a dead theatre. I don't know. One friend was unable to join us for the 9:30PM show because it was sold out at 4:30PM. - HappyMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Funny. Back in the early days of Hollywood most epics where filmed on sets built in sound stages. Then a few decades later the big thing was "Filmed on Location in ....". Now they're filming more and more things back in front of green screens in stages again.
- mille716, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Learn to ***** spell.
- Nudar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why is 300 the most Dugg movie of all time? Everyday for the past month there's been a new article submitted. Methinks some viral marketing is going on.
- lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I saw the movie last night at 11:45, and I was expecting cinematographic genius. Overall it was a great movie, but it had nothing unexpected. Lots of blood and slow motion.
- au071, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Just saw it, pretty good; a little repetitive after a while...
- pcx99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Saw it Friday. It's an OK film, not a great one. The visuals were stunning, like watching a live-action-painting. The story dragged in places and there were enough artificial stuff that it really jarred you out of your suspension of disbelief, particularly the priests, the ogres, the hunchback, and the Persian king who was, I guess, 12 feet tall. The film went on about the priests so much that I could hardly repress a snicker when at the end the leader was shouting about "putting an end to mysticism". The stark "if you're beautiful you're one of the good guys, if you're not you're evil" message was pretty transparent and, unfortunately, a running theme.
Mostly it was just 90 minutes of hacking body parts off, to the point where you had to wonder when there was a beheading they forgot to have the blood spurting as the heart continued to beat for a few seconds. Ah well.
It's not a great or compelling story the way Gladiator was. It's interesting and entertaining but it's not something you'll keep coming back to again and again.
The visuals are what make this movie though. Most films are "skip the theater buy the dvd". This film is "see it in the theater, skip the dvd" - omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It was as melodramatic as it was visually breathtaking. It wasn't a bad movie, in fact I quite enjoyed it. It's a great film that is visually epic, but somehow doesn't quite feel as deep as an epic should. Definitely see it on the big screen, just because the small one won't do it justice, but don't expect to be especially moved.
If you like awesome battle scenes and eye candy, then you'll love it. If not, then it may not be your thing, as that's what a great deal of the movie consists of. Oh, and boobies. ;) - trixnfx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I totally agree. I can't imagine how the small screen is going do this movie justice after watching it at the theaters. This movie is visual candy to the maximum and anything less is just not worth it. It just makes your jaw drop.
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@barrke
from Dogma, the Golgothan
http://dogma.film.ru/img/shots/golgothan.jpg - tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Unsurprising. Hollywood needs people in theaters.
- lewikee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not surprising that it's drawing sell-out crowds now, seeing as whether or not it's a good movie has nothing to do with the stellar job they did to market it and give it good buzz (which what makes people go IN the theater at first).
What matters is if it will be resilient at the box office, and from what I hear of people coming OUT of the theaters, it very well might be. - saqibnk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2saw the midnight show of this and thought it was an entertaining film, nothing more nothing less...stayed true to the comic book maybe too true...i agree the monsters and sex scenes were a little uncalled for...in the end i wouldve much rather seen Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire made into a movie (amazing book about Sparta and the battle if anyone's curiosity is sparked after seeing this film)
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I just got back from it and I could see it again and again, it was just a great movie to watch. Sure it wasnt deep nut it was FUN.
- ender42081, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7@roflcopterfuel
I know!! they didn't have mutants back then! and the guy with blades for arms is SO wrong...
get over it, it is a fiction based on another historically inaccurate film. It was more accurate than I thought it was going to be but OMG it is so not meant to be a historical peice. you remind me of the catholic protesters outside dogma (ummmm rubber poop monster?). if you want to give us a link to something pointing out the innacuracies fine, but FGS get over it. - JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Bought tickets three days in advance for a midnight premier on the largest (conventional) screen in the midwest.... And I would have to say: if you live near an IMAX theater, you -must- see this movie there. I still wish I had.
