In most of the early art the Blockade Runner appears in the story boards as "the pirate ship". This is why they spent so much time and money on the BR model, considering it's used so briefly at the beginning of the film.

The production designers would have had a light saber in the ass if they didn't make everything to exact specification. And he pays them all with lollipops too.
