- mu0p, on 04/07/2009, -12/+185except that the beauty of the star trek iterations that we all love came from stories so well crafted that they didn't need "huge fireballs, shattering explosions &exciting fights"
Let's hope Abrams doesn't miss the point. - shutaro, on 04/07/2009, -5/+156KHAAAAAAAAANNNNN!!!
- Kethinov, on 04/07/2009, -6/+112This review completely ignores the two most important questions any Star Trek fan has about the movie:
1. Did they adequately service continuity, or are they using the time travel plot as an excuse to lamely reset everything permanently?
2. Beneath the glitz of the special effects and the edgier storytelling, was it a good story? Flashiness and darkness is great, but substance is essential. - unit001, on 04/07/2009, -9/+99^^ This. I'll be hugely disappointed if this devolves into a "Fast and Furious" in space. Also the writer has some huge balls saying this is the best Trek movie since The Wrath of Kahn. I'll be very happy if its at least as good as First Contact.
- fluidfoundation, on 04/07/2009, -1/+83Two words. Captain Data.
- Zippo, on 04/07/2009, -1/+78Movie theatres, set your film projectors to stun.
- QuackAttack818, on 04/07/2009, -5/+74Best since Wrath of Kahn? Obviously someone hasn't seen First Contact
- Bloodwine, on 04/07/2009, -4/+72Best movie since Wrath of Khan? Has this guy watched First Contact?! I'd be pleasantly surprised if this movie equals First Contact
- Zippo, on 04/07/2009, -1/+63***** engage!
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+60But is it better than Star Trek IV: The One with the Whales?
- LMN8R, on 04/07/2009, -4/+50You really have no idea who JJ Abrams is, do you? The entire reason why he's so highly-regarded is due to ability to create compelling characters and stories.
- vr121, on 04/07/2009, -4/+48lets be honest...after 10 movies and 5 tv series there's just too much trek story for new fans. and anyone whose seen all of trek knows that star trek has tons of story/continuity contradictions in it...This movie not only serves as a prequel but also as a sequel (starts in the 24th century). i personally feel resetting it will allow for newer stories to be told without having to worry about if it "fits" into the old trek stories. they tried that with Star Trek Enterprise and we all know how that turned out.
- zephc, on 04/07/2009, -2/+45Three words: Make it so!
- DarkBlueAnt, on 04/07/2009, -5/+38Really? Because the scenes that stand out most in my mind are ones of Kirk fighting a goofy lizardman and then of Spock and Kirk fighting to the death over some lady.
There were whole episodes where the crew fights aliens that never actually come on camera. They would have had more fights if they had the budget. The stories would have been cool regardless, but I really would have liked more action in the old series. - rpsmith28, on 04/07/2009, -0/+31I've been a trek fan for 20+ years, a fact that lately has caused me more embarrassment than pride. Continuity is not that important to me, as long as it's a good story and gets young people interested in space.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+27No way, nothing was better than Chekov running around looking for "nuclear wessels."

- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+24from Data on twitter:
BrentSpinerHe did tell me the new ST movie is already in the can. Guess I'm not in it. Directed by a Mr. Abraham or something. Try again tomorrow. - theuber1337, on 04/07/2009, -1/+25Or The Voyage Home! It's the 80s.. with Whales...Yeah!
- TEssma, on 04/07/2009, -5/+28Compelling stories? I still have no idea what the ***** Lost is about.
- rrife, on 04/07/2009, -1/+23I liked it. The best part was the one where Scotty was talking to the mouse.
- PseudoThink, on 04/07/2009, -0/+22If you also forgot which episode "The Inner Light" was:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Inner_Light_(TNG_ ... - Shwaavay, on 04/07/2009, -0/+22Everything needs "huge fireballs, shattering explosions and exciting fights!!"
Even the Passion of the Christ movie would have been better with them. I'm sorry but you just can't go wrong with finding new ways to blow ***** up. - DaigojiGai, on 04/07/2009, -2/+21Spoken like a true trekkie. I would argue that it has nothing to do with a serious lack of imagination. Times have changed, there is a new generations with no attachment to TOS, or even TNG or Enterprise for that matter. This is a great way of re-introducing trek to new fans while also luring in those that always knew of Trek but never had the patience or interest to get involved. This film will prompt people to revisit TOS, TNG, DS9, etc.
There is enough fan service in the film to keep die hards (that aren't anal) happy, while also refreshing Gene's original concept. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but see the film first before saying anyone involved in this project is suffering from a serious lack of imagination - I am sure after you see it you will change your mind. - wolfing, on 04/07/2009, -1/+20Q owns them all
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+19That movie doesnt exist.

- TheInformer, on 04/07/2009, -4/+20Past performance doesn't ensure future success, hence the trepidation.
- Kronos6948, on 04/07/2009, -0/+15I think they're in Alameda.
Interesting tidbit:
The woman that Chekov talks to while on the street asking about the naval base wasn't even an extra. She was just some oblivious citizen who was walking past, trying to be nice. It came off so well, they decided to keep that scene in the film. - RyanBlueThunder, on 04/07/2009, -1/+16What I find important is that this review is written by someone who thought they were attending a remastered screening of Star Trek II, and were surprised with the sneak preview. As a matter of perspective, anyone who cares enough to go to Alamo Drafthouse to watch a remastered showing of STII will likely be enough of a Trek fan.
- geoken, on 04/07/2009, -0/+15Captain Data vs. Locutus, that's what is needed.
- troyallen069, on 04/07/2009, -1/+15Brent Spiner is awesome
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -2/+15Galaxy Quest 2?
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+12Well, anyone so obsessed with Star Trek clearly isn't using 'em anyway.
- gray8110, on 04/07/2009, -1/+13To play devil's advocate... there have been pre-release reviews for every Trek Flick in the last 20 years that have said the same thing. Nemesis had more than a few glowing pre-release reviews that compared it favorably to ST:II and we all know what a wonderful piece of film that was. I'm interested in seeing the movie, but I'm not holding my breath that it won't be a dumbed-down, quasi-trek flick with lots of pretty pictures.
- UselessTrivia, on 04/07/2009, -0/+12You'll definitely want to look out for my new screenplay, then.
Fast and Furious: Orbital Rendezvous
It's set in an alternate reality where aliens landed on earth in the 90s and gave us all sorts of cool space technology. Now space travel is completely commonplace and Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are a couple of ultra-competive "Spacers" who like to use tricked-out space craft to race through dangerous areas.
Major scenes include: A chase scene where Vin Diesel is chasing Paul Walker while alien police chase HIM through an asteroid belt. A race sequence using terrestrial racers through that huge canyon on Mars, and a zero G love scene in a sealed bubble orbiting saturn amongst the rings.
It ends with Vin Diesel winning a drag race against time travelling drag queens thus saving the solar system from having its timeline reset to the one where someone greenlighted Tokyo Drift. - drlha, on 04/07/2009, -4/+16Presumably they mean its better than First Contact. Or are you implying First Contact is better than Khan? In which case you'd be wrong.
- alpwilson, on 04/07/2009, -0/+11I can feel my nerd senses tingling already
- Angostura, on 04/07/2009, -1/+12I came on to say First Contact too. That film made me hopeful that the future TNG movies would be tense action-and-suspense-filled treasures.
Boy, was I wrong. - sgtpppr, on 04/07/2009, -1/+12That one did give us 'nuclear wessels'.
