- yocouchdigga, on 07/01/2009, -7/+91"blow up in the face of the gay community" - choice words, Kyle Buchanan.
They should quit ***** with this movie and leave it as is, bunch of pansies, I say. - uptown, on 07/01/2009, -9/+63"look at me ... I'm outrageous ... look at me!!!"
Isn't that basically what his movies boil down to? - Spamcan, on 07/01/2009, -3/+49Why pay to see 70% percent of a movie in a theater when you can wait and see the entire thing uncut on DVD? Every time they gut a movie to appease a certain demographic or cut the rating don't go, you're only justifying them charging you full price for an incomplete product.
- kete00, on 07/01/2009, -6/+42I think that his work can be enjoyed on a few different levels. Yes, one level is certainly Sacha running around acting stupid, and looking like an idiot. However, another level consists of soliciting reactions from the people around him. By acting the way he does, he gets people to let their guard down, and reveal how racist, sexist, or homophobic they are. For me, those are the truly shocking moments.
- Wailord, on 07/01/2009, -8/+39I'm sick of this "politically correct" *****. All sorts of demographics and sectors are lampooned in movies now, and a movie all about a gay guy has to cut their last scene because it mocks gays? People need to learn to frigging relax and not freak out at every little jab. Jesus Christ.
- itsLadam, on 07/02/2009, -2/+28If they can take a d*ck they can take a joke....
- mikbunn, on 07/01/2009, -1/+23I like the theater experience. There's a difference between watching with hundreds of people and by yourself or with a few friends.
But I still won't buy the six-dollar soda. - d3dm, on 07/02/2009, -3/+20"look at me ... I'm outrageous ... look at me!!!"
That's also what most Gay Pride parades boil down to as well. - twiztidsinz, on 07/01/2009, -4/+18This movie is so gay.
- BassMastr, on 07/01/2009, -8/+22Yeah b/c it's okay for you to hope he gets beat up and insult him but it's not okay for him to make fun of you for ***** men where they poop... Hypocrite.
- serif69, on 07/01/2009, -3/+16I will not have you take the Lord Our Savior's name in vain. I demand you remove the final phrase from your comment.
/s - DarthVolta, on 07/01/2009, -2/+14I'm confused - is this ending in the film or not? This article isn't exactly well-written:
"Still, that ending was ultimately among the reshot portions of the film that a mystery source revealed to Nikki Finke and The Wrap weeks ago."
So the ending _is_ among the reshot portions?
Also, I'm so ***** tired of people acting like a completely absurd and ridiculous movie has to somehow perfectly match up to this imaginary standard of political correctness.
FTA: "Then I started in and Jack joined with his thoughts. By the time I got to the bashing, the audience started defending the movie. They were annoyed with us for ruining the party."
I would be annoyed too. He acts like a shot of someone being brain damaged and drooling being played off for laughs is just irreprehensible. Give me a ***** break - it's a movie. - nateabel, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8As a gay man, I'll tell you right now that not all of us enjoy anal sex.
- Hetman, on 07/01/2009, -1/+9I am confused. Is the last scene set up or not. Is the audience reaction at the cage scene staged by actors or are they unaware that this is a joke like on Borat. I prefer to see the honest reactions of hatefull bigots rather than a staged fight.
- Johnichi, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8That was a very long and confusing way to say you don't like to watch two guys having buttsex.
- FatGuyLilCoat, on 07/01/2009, -2/+9Personally, I can't wait to see it. I think it'll be hilarious!
- Haptick, on 07/01/2009, -1/+8I guess the question is that if it is Cohen's/the movie producers intention to shock us, with the hope that in doing so, we will become introspective about our own fears and bigotry, then is by making the movie less shocking, does it weaken the higher purpose of the film? I sort of feel so, and believe that the cut material should been kept in, because the target audience of Bruno isn't the gay community (like Borat wasn't targeting the Kazakh's), but everyone outside the gay community, and thus, their (perhaps) uninterrupted offense at some parts of the movie is not sufficient cause to censure the complete message of the movie, which is in theory, for the benefit of the gay community.
- hawkspur, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6/Mr. Slave
- quaxon, on 07/02/2009, -2/+8i actually despise going to the theater for comedies. You got idiots laughing at ***** thats not that funny, and you also miss a lot of dialog that is drowned out by said idiots laughing. Although i saw Borat months before it came out at a screening in SF were Cohen himself showed up and gave a speech and that was amazing.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -1/+7First off, I'm gay and consider myself to be a comedy nerd. I find SBC to be very funny and unprecedented in what he does. He is also very, very smart, and his intention with his series of films was to call attention to xenophobia, by presenting unsuspecting bystanders with overblown stereotypical caricatures and observing how they react. What's shocking is that no matter how far he pushed the character Bruno, and no matter how far from an accurate depiction of "the gay life" he strayed, people in the film reacted on a very primal level and the level of hate shown is incredible (eg the cage fight uproar). SBC wants to show us that even if something is unbelievable and ridiculous, that some people will cling to what they know, and that's to hate Jews/gays/foreigners/what have you. But I can certainly see how details like being physically battered would be arresting to see on screen. It does call attention to the issue of homophobia, but I'm not sure most viewers will think, "hey, this stuff really happens in the world. We should do something about it." They're more likely to think, "haha, anyone that flamboyant had it coming." From what I gather, this movie would make me uncomfortable to see in a theater. I'll most likely end up renting it and watching it in private, at least the first time around.
- Jones82, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6I guess you missed his point about the social experience? Seeing a good comedy in a full theater is an experience you can't get at home
- Roguecop, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Sacha Baron Cohen through all three of his characters is about exploiting the simple minded masses inability to understand satirical humor. He does this in such a way that exposes their hypocritical nature, naivety, and hubris. The same kind of people he targets also believe Steven Colbert is a real Conservative. It may be hard for you or me to comprehend but a very large number of people live in an inert fog, think in very basic remedial terms, and it's very easy to take advantage of them. This is why these 'septic' people don't tend to trust intellectuals and would readily vote for Sarah 'Little Shop of Horrors' Palin because she is 'one of their own.'.
If you are a smart gay individual, do not be offended, be thankful that you are 'self aware' and appreciate the 'twisting of the knife' aimed at the idiots out there. - d3dm, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6Just curious, how do you feel about the outrageous flamboyant antics at the pride parades? Don't you think that these could also intensify hatred toward gays by people that don't understand it's satire? How is the movie any different?
- nateabel, on 07/02/2009, -3/+8As a gay man, I don't care if homosexuals are made fun of. The main concern in the gay community is how this film is going to be received by homophobes. To them, are they going to be able to see that it is a satire? Are they going to understand that Bruno is a gross stereotype that the vast majority of gay men do not adhere to? Probably not. Seeing this will only justify their hatred more. THAT is what we are afraid of.
- failtrain, on 07/02/2009, -2/+7Dugg for
"***** men where they poop" - Tyrghast, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6If you're going to take offense at comedy, you need to relax a bit. His characters try to achieve humor through being a mirror of one demographic or another. Borat was a right-wing bigot, Ali G was a mockery of the hip-hop and gangster rap culture, and Bruno is poking fun at homosexuals, but at the end of the day it's a comedian doing his job which is to make people laugh. If you don't find it funny, don't watch it. I, for one, find the antics of Sascha Baron Cohen to be amusing and take no offense at anything he says.
- kfxrcer1, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4YEAH!!! I only go and see movies that have 100% of the footage they filmed. Never see a movie that has anything less or else your justifying them to make edits and as a consumer I demand every frame filmed during its production or else its not complete and I'm being ripped off.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4all this steamy gay talk is making me sweat
- dafragsta, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4I took a long time to express something that needs to be handled with a little tact on both sides, and by bringing out the best examples of a lack thereof, Bruno will make both sides laugh at the absurdity.
How is someone in the closet because they simply do not prefer something. That's like saying I do like pistachio flavored ice cream because I say I don't. It's just one flavor and it might actually be something I don't like but I actually dislike it to a level of discomfort to even think about the flavor. I fully respect that other people like it, but I don't. - cagedog, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4my impression of the article is that the crowd did actually start to get violent and that the scene that was cut is where Bruno's boyfriend pretends to be brain damaged from an implied beating.
- Lavarock, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4maybe it's the being attracted to men? Maybe? I dunno.
- itsLadam, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4Sacha Baron Cohen has always made it clear that characters like Ali G, Borat and Bruno are tools which bring out the sub-conscience racism, sexism and whatever else-ism in the audience, in the hope that they will, shortly afterwards, realizing that what they just in stitches laughing about is actually not PC or socially acceptable.
Keep the ending. - tonytroz, on 07/01/2009, -7/+10Yeah, the theater experience is amazing...
Nothing like having to deal with constant cell-phones going off, chatty teenagers, uncomfortable chairs, etc.
With giant LCD TVs, surround sound stereos, and better-than-DVD media becoming the norm for the average American, it won't be long before movie theaters start losing their only foothold in the industry: Access to movies before they come out on home media. - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -1/+4Maybe I'm just anti-social, but it really doesn't matter to me if I'm alone, with a few friends, or a thousand people watching a movie, I'm still just watching a movie.
- Boofster, on 07/01/2009, -2/+5Hope they keep all the alternate endings on the DVD
- Rain12913, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5The difference is that right now, in the United States, gay people are still not only discriminated against and denied of basic rights, but they're physically assaulted and killed. Gay people are still murdered because of their sexual orientation, whereas most other racial/religious groups are not. It's easy to dismiss it as politically correct ***** when you're not one of the kids in Mississippi who goes to high school everyday fearing that he's going to get jumped because of who he's attracted to.
- TheHungerArtist, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3How about the freedom/right to be oneself without getting the ***** kicked out of you?
- nateabel, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Yeah, once again they do not represent everyone, that is for sure. I think a lot of it has just become a parody of itself, done for camp value.
- Ferago, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Leaving the house is fun.
- nateabel, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4Actually, he WOULD be qualified. Most gay men douche before anal sex, and if they don't they are pretty gross. Why do you think so many are okay with rimming? You think we just like to eat poop?
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5Who ***** whom and where is just so 7th grade. gay bashing is so eighties. why don't you boys just go out back and ***** and get it over with. all that pent up aggression isn't good for you. besides- anyone who knows that much about douching... methinks you doth protest too much
Gay people who are out have bigger balls that you pussies could ever conceive of. Sure- it's easy in Cali or the big cities back East. Try it in Mississippi. You wouldn't last a day.
Back to my point: I hate Sacha Cohen. There are enough gay people who do damage to us all by acting like effete idiots. We don't need any help from the likes of Cohen. - goomba323, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3*spoiler alert*
Bruno's gay... - Doctoxicated, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Honestly why would anyone listen to someone who worked on the show "Mad About You" on a matter involving comedy? Really? Paul Reiser the guy who wrote "Couplehood" (eck) and jokes about eating melon that is too soft to enjoy with co-star Hellen Hunt who is possibly the least funny woman in the history of humanity?
- NeverReturnKid, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3So what do all the Ron Paul lovers think of his appearance in Bruno?
- Yage2006, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Non gay people like having buttsex too. Google it.
Just thought I'd point that out. - yehaww, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2So they were actually beat up by the crowd at the cage match? Or they staged and filmed a fight afterward? What the hell is the article saying?
- clickwir, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2I don't care! this movie looks dumb. digg should set a higher standard than articles like this.
- mickhead, on 07/02/2009, -0/+20.0049
- MrBogard, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2If you don't enjoy these characters as satire, yet you still enjoy them, well... you're doing it wrong.
- BassMastr, on 07/02/2009, -2/+4Nope...no problem with gay people. What gave you the impression that I did? Did I say something untrue or insult one of them? I just don't like hypocrites. I don't care how they have sex either. I just find it disgusting personally. I don't like anchovies either does that make me a bigot towards those who eat anchovies? I just find it humorous when they can't take a joke but make jokes of others or wish harm on them.
