- commernie, on 01/18/2008, -15/+158I guess feds and cops don't like it when people find out the pieces of ***** that they really are.
- Moshcrates, on 01/18/2008, -3/+132The movie defamed their reputations by saying they were greedy, corrupt officers?...and now they want 55 million?
I would think that the suit itself would prove the portrayl - therealjkolb, on 01/18/2008, -1/+106I cant speak for everyone but I don't know how many negative thoughts you can add to the DEA on account of American Gangster. I suppose someone could sue for defaming the Persians in 300 if this passes.
- richmessenger, on 01/18/2008, -1/+95Since it was only based on the story, and doesn't claim to be a documentary or a reenactment, they are probably wasting their time.
- Tanktunker, on 01/18/2008, -0/+48Couldn't they have just framed the producers for possession, or murder or something?
- chris9902, on 01/18/2008, -6/+54you'll never make it as a lawyer with that attitude. You need to take all that common sense and put it in a bottle. Then pull a big number of your ass and throw it at somebody until you get it. That's the American way.
- darthgarlic, on 01/18/2008, -3/+48How could the movie possibly hurt the agents' reputations, the DEA has done that for themselves, they arent much better and sometimes worse than the people they put in jail.
- diespectra, on 01/18/2008, -5/+50***** the DEA.
- norman619, on 01/18/2008, -0/+33It's funny cuz the corruption is a matter of record. The damned movie was set back in the ***** 70's. Is the DEA trying to say the corruption continues to this day?
- supermanred, on 01/18/2008, -12/+42That should read:
I guess dirty feds and dirty cops don't like it when people find out the peices of ***** that they really are.
I mean, really you can't seriously hate all federal officers and cops, do you? What are you, a rap video? - boombye, on 01/18/2008, -1/+30FTA: "The only reason people went to see the film is because they thought it was a true story when really it is a pack of lies," said Dominic Amorosa, a lawyer for the plaintiffs told Reuters.
How about I just wanted to see a gangster movie with Denzel Washington?
Seriously, I'm sure there are plenty of movies based on true stories that people don't give a crap about. - sodade, on 01/18/2008, -2/+27The DEA has ZERO ***** credibility. Rather than being focused purely on law enforcement, they have been influencing the laws they are supposed to uphold. At the same time, their approach has failed. Miserably.
- trickyt, on 01/18/2008, -0/+19Now I want to see it!
- norman619, on 01/18/2008, -0/+18Were. The movie is set in the time the events dramatized actually took place (70's) not today. This lawsuit makes them look guilty.
- lazerus9, on 01/18/2008, -3/+20They're upset since they lost their big load of coke when that Gulfstream crashed.
- Schneckehaus, on 01/18/2008, -1/+18Homeward Bound was based on a true story too, and had talking dogs...
Go figure these kind of idiots would be the people working for the DEA. - shaundee, on 01/18/2008, -4/+18See they are still on the shake down
- ganymede2010, on 01/18/2008, -2/+15These so called cops were shakedown artists, and they still are. Instead of shaking down suppliers and low ranking drug pushers they've moved on to shaking down people through the courts. This all this is, nothing more.
- 4degrees, on 01/18/2008, -1/+13its a movie people, its fantasy. the only thing true to history in that movie are the names. get over it. Maybe the DEA needs a lesson on the difference between reality and fantasy.
- boombye, on 01/18/2008, -3/+14Only on the weekends.
- gotamd, on 01/18/2008, -1/+12They're just annoyed that they can't bust in, steal the movie and the money, and leave like they usually do when something bothers them.
- VeryBoredNow, on 01/18/2008, -2/+12Tarnished reputation? You gotta be kidding. When did they have a positive reputation?
- coolmike129, on 01/18/2008, -3/+13The DEA Agents had already ruined their reputation by exacerbating the War on Drugs. Perhaps the American people should be suing them. That would be true justice.
- skews13, on 01/18/2008, -7/+16your a narcotics agent. you have no ***** character.
- mlvassallo, on 01/18/2008, -0/+9Good ***** movie.
- nontaxpayer, on 01/18/2008, -5/+14Surely you jest? People become cops because they are morons looking for power over others. Cops are scumbags generally speaking.
- Superfreak77, on 01/18/2008, -0/+8What a place, everyone is on the take.
That hateful quote from Marx just rings like a bomb now: "When anything can be traded for money, it is the end of it all" - jcaino, on 01/18/2008, -3/+11the truth hurts
- lewhich, on 01/18/2008, -2/+10Time to sue Hollywood for using "White" Jesus
- cybrguy, on 01/18/2008, -1/+9I don't feel sorry for one of the most worthless government agencies. I would take most of the DEA budget and give it to the coast guard and a proper border fence. That would be a far more efficient use of money.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7You have to wonder what the purpose of the DEA is if the CIA is trafficking in cocaine.
- mazing, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7"they are probably wasting their time"... That's new...
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -1/+8Stop spamming.
- pcpimpster, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7***** the DEA, I was watching some show the other night and saw this guy get busted with a couple ounces of pot and a very small amount of meth (very bad for you kids). He was sentenced to 30 ***** years for it... 30 ***** years for what appeared to be his own personal stash. Our war on drugs needs to go, its ruining more lives then its helping. Then to have corrupt officials involved makes it eaven worse.
- boombye, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7your link didn't even work buster
- bjs3171, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6or it looked entertaining. in fact, i was hoping it WASN'T based on a true story, and instead ORIGINAL. the movie was superb, though.
- boombye, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Oh and how could I forget, I'm so used to seeing Blade Runner, that I had to see what Ridley Scott would do with this, and he did a good job, especially the lighting of 1970s Harlem at night.
- vapb400, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7Their logic sucks. Most people just accept the fact that it is a movie and don't put any thought to the corruption of the DEA. Hell....most people have already accepted that a move "based on a true story" is very loosely based.
By carrying out this lawsuit they are drawing attention to the fact, making it an issue, which will undoubtedly backfire. When I saw American Gangster I didn't get mad at the DEA, I simply enjoyed the movie.
Nice one DEA! - darny, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6tehnico beat me to it...the actions of corrupt cops tarnished reputations. not a silly movie.
- gropo, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Yes, many cops tend to have power issues. Many DEA agents not only fit this bill, but compound that with the notion that they're bought in to a giant crusade of douchebaggery, fueled by lies and deprecated Victorian-era imposed morality.
What you've got is an organization that indubitably attracts the nation's most devout power tripping *****. - ReligionOfPeace, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7And beside the obvious (the DEA being nazis), the movie has that standard disclaimer about being fictional and that any resemblance....
***** them. Maybe they could go out and do something useful instead of harassing medical pot distributors and smokers. - aidave, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5The DEA is the modern-day equivalent of the Inquisition. Anyone working for it is, by definition, not a good person.
Many, if not most, cops are good people. The DEA is a universal exception to that. - objectcode, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6thats american gangster right there. making something up and suing to make money
- TheCasablancan, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5"When seconds count, the police are only minutes away." This is why home/personal defense is so important.
- johnboycanada, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6Reputation? Ha.
- xxTazxx, on 01/18/2008, -2/+7The Iranians have thereselves a case.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6If the DEA is really so concerned about its reputation, maybe they should stop spending billions of dollars to fund their national credibility gap/self-dug hole/web of lies.
- bkrishnan, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6Haven't seen the movie. Now I will.
- boombye, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5"The movie hurt the agents' reputations by falsely claiming in text at the end that a collaboration between Lucas and Roberts "led to the convictions of three-quarters of New York City's Drug Enforcement Agency" agents between 1973 and 1985, according to the suit, which seeks class action status."
If you're talking about that, it says that according to the suit, which seeks class action status, that the movie made a false claim.... Ok here's my problem, these 3 fellas only worked at the federal DEA and not for the NY DEA.. They are two different things. The narcs in this suit are claiming that people won't know the difference and assume it's federal DEA that's being talked about at the end. I don't know, just seems inconsistent. -
