Because you can make out with your date in private? - Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16because you can talk on a cellphone and nobody else can hear you
because it easyier to make a good quality cam
you dont have to buy there overpriced food, you can bring your own better and cheaper food
there arnt any kids crying or kicking you seat - romeyinfc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@TEMM:
It's called "having friends" and having a designated driver drive you home. Plus when you're at the movies for 5 hours having a beer or two during the first hour won't impair you. - SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Because it's a lot easier to sneak into a drive-in than a cinema?
- romeyinfc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11How about the fact that it's a lot cheaper than sitting in the theater? We have one here in Northern Colorado and it's $5 a person for 2 movies - much better than the $8 you pay for just one in the theater.
I don't smoke or having young crying kids, but I love going to the drive-in with a cooler full of beer. - WaterMan99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It's back to the future.
My kids love going to the Drive-In.
the only problem is the lack of them. There is only one in the entire Metro Atlanta area! - albybum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That's exactly what they do at the one near me. They use a short range radio transmitter. You can listen to the movie over the radio.
Conveniently, you can also bring a portable radio and sit on the hill above the theater and get the full experience for free. :p - nayten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm pretty lucky, I live within a 30-minute Pennsylvania backwoods drive to TWO different Drive-Ins. It's the only way I'd ever think of going to see a new movie anymore. $5 for two movies, privacy with your friends, cheap (or free) food, big screen, perfect audio level... it's incredible. This is as much of an american summer to me as cookouts and waterparks. Bring it back.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8At least you can take your kids to the Coca Cola factory... or the airport or... uh...
(/futurama reference) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Now cops will be sitting outside drive-ins busting people for DUI.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5speaks volumes of the actual problem with the movie industry and why its losing money. Its not people downloading a bootleg copy but the experience in the theaters just isnt worth the money.
- compboy1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, they can only play movies at night, so the heat usually isn't an issue....
- Doomtime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is one not too far from my house and I love it. I only wish they had better speakers. i wonder if they could transmit the move sound over fm or am and have everyone tune in their radio to a specific frequency.
- oyourmom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They sell things for 40 bucks that do that. Also im wondering how the picture would be with newer movies and you wouldnt get that THX thrill unless you were driving a custom "pimpin" ride. Even then it only transmits over 2 channels. Cinemas have like over 10 channels.
- imnotquitesure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought most used fm or am stations for audio transmission, the audio still isn't great that way. Not for the audiophile.
- TROGDOR42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They do. RTFA.
- BBryan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4paging Mr. Herman, mr herman you have a call at the front desk.

How do you drive home after drinking a cooler of beer at the drive in? - nayten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But, you do have to clean up the popcorn when you spill it...
- Canthros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah, the Drive-In.
I actually miss the Drive-In my parents took us to in days past (it's been gone for a few years now, sadly). In addition to being closer than the two remaining such establishments in the area, I think it may have been (slightly) better maintained than at least one of them (the nearest remaining Drive-In is not in a great part of town, but the other is at least twice as far).
In any case, good times. Three movies (provided you could stay awake through them) for about the cost of a weekend matinee, bring your own food, and *privacy*. Sound was so-so, but good enough, and the restrooms were not so great (usually clean, as I recall, but the place wasn't that well-kept in a lot of ways; I don't think it was a real money earner). - evandler1122, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Movie-goers can take their own food and drink -- they don't have to sneak it in." This is why the dirve in is making a comback. Why pay 3.50 for a box of candy when you could bring any food you want.
- creep303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Doomtime.
they have that exact same idea over stereo FM at the one near my town.
I haven't been in a long time, it's been open FOREVER here in Peterborough Ontario.
But yeah, you pay, tune into 98.something FM and you can hear the movie like that. They transmit a really high quality broadcast, mind you, the range is super-limited, but if you want to, you can drive by and pick it up and hear a movie when you're within a couple of miles. - imnotquitesure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We had one open up around here last year and I love it $5.00 for a double feature and I can bring my kids, a 3 yr old and an infant, without bothering other patrons. I like to bring my own snacks and drinks too.
- Aggort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man I'd much rather go a drive in and pile in everyone I can. It feels so awesome, like your free! Plus where we go it's only 7.50 a car with whoever will fit and 9 bucks a van. Friday is free popcorn and most nights you get to see 2 movies! Even if sometimes the movies are a bit dated, it's better than DVD and better than 9 bucks for indoors!
- elmro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Drive-Ins are wonderful. I have fond memories of going to the drive in during my teen years. Families would be playing frisbees with their kids waiting for the movie to start. College kids would throw keggers in the back of the field. You were in the comfort of your own car, so you didn't have to listen to anyone else talk. You also had the convenience of bringing your own food. I believe now they have upgraded to an FM frequency.
I have to give a shout-out to my old stomping grounds http://www.maltadrivein.com
(Check it out if you are anywhere near Albany, NY)
That placed used to play a double-feature, and then play the first movie again at the end. That left plenty of time to get to know your date. - mikedoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder if having my car idling while the movie is playing will mess anything up. I'm surely not showing up in this 90+ degree weather with out my air conditioning.
- beezn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Indiana just this year started daylight savings, the most vocal opponents other than farmers that live near the eastern/central time zone line were the drive in owners.
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I miss the drive in where I used to live. $6 per person for two shows, decent quality FM broadcast, bring your own food/drinks, sitting in my comfortable seats, no whining kids, no annoying cell phones.
They play fairly recent movies too. I just checked and they're playing Pirates 2 and Cars right now. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I found out about one near me recently that I didn't know about before. Appearantly they do a double feature every night. Two recent movies for only like $8. Very cool.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's one a few miles away from my house "The 49er" it's great because it's super cheap, but for the most part they play really crappy movies.
- Doomtime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@TROGDOR42: sorry i read the article, but missed that. the one here, and every other one I've been to have those cheap clip on speakers. I'll have to ask the manager if they already have this system in place at the one i go to.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3drinker's paradise?
....as someone who has never walked out of a theatre before...it would be nice to get snacks and stuff without having to leave - jgreene777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's $8 per car in Fayetteville, AR and a great deal. when you have young kids (like me) it's the perfect place to see the new movie that you can't get away long enough to catch without the kids. you can load the kids up with coloring books and a flashlight and they have a blast in the back of the ole SUV while the wife and I have complete control of the volume! kids too loud? turn it up! hungry? bring your own snacks in a cooler! legs cramped? scoot the seat back a bit! too hot or too cold? adjust it!... anyway, you get the idea! oh yeah... NO STICKY FLOOR!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think there's probably some FCC bullcrap associated with that, though. I know, i know - this is how most satellite radio stuff works, but that's a much smaller range. I'm not sure though, but what I do know is that this is a pretty cool idea.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a drive-in just a few miles down the road. Saw Pirates for the second time a couple days ago.
- shack95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Making a comeback? We have had three drive-in's in Western NY- and they have always been packed full every weekend for as long as I can remember.
http://www.transitdrivein.com/ - helikopter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the one by me has 2 fm stations (one for each screen) locally transmitted, so you dont need to use their ***** speakers. definitely worth it though they don't always play the best movies.
- indoloony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There has been one in Iowa for a long time. I've been there a few times and it's a lot of fun. The experience was pretty good, and I intend to go to more drive-in theatres..
They are a great spot for long exposure photography too :). - Tabris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@TEX
No....Not really police state at all. They know drunk people come outta there in their cars, so they watch for them. Same idea as a speed trap. No police state.
Hell if you're worried about getting caught, drive SLOWLY and don't weave. Even a BAC of .20 won't get you pulled over if you drive decent enough lol - CowTipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is one right across the street from me, its great, tuesdays are car load night, 15 bucks for up to 8 people and plus you pay around 7 bucks to watch 2 movies, its a great deal
- anchondo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i love the drive-in. We have one pretty close to where i live and they broadcast it over fm. Food actually wasnt bad either last time i went. On weekends they show 3 films(all different). Usually they get pretty good films too, im thinking around 2 to 3 wks after it airs in regular theatre, which i think is great. I think the price was around 6 bucks a person. I dont remember them doing it by the carload but 6 bucks for 3 movies is a great deal.

Find one near you. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There's one a few miles away from my house "The 49er" it's great because it's super cheap, but for the most part they play really crappy movies."
You must be in NW Indiana. I never been to that one (though I ment to go before moving). I did get to go to the Y&W though in Merrilville (before it closed down). - kevinneill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For anyone not sure if they are close to one. This is a pretty good list.

"Now cops will be sitting outside drive-ins busting people for DUI."
At the Cicero IL. drive-in (the Bel-Air) there would always be a bunch of cops outside the drive-in after the show was over pulling over cars. Atleast 6 squad cars at the very least, about 10 at the most. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to go to the drive-in every weekend (sometimes twice since the one I went to had 3 screens). Sometimes me and my girlfriend (later to become my wife) would watch the movie and sometimes not so much.
But they showed first run movies there (Bel-air in Cicero, IL). I've seen more movies there then I can list. And even the darkest movies (like batman) was very clear.
Sound came over a FM station on the radio and we normally wouldn't get out of there until after midnight.
As for the summer heat... it was night time. The temperature was perfect. You just needed to make sure you didn't park to close to the back of the lot or the mosquitoes would feast on you, especially if your weren't there to watch movies. - neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I go the the one outside of Wasaga Beach Ontario whenever I can.. By Canadian prices its a deal $10 for a double feature!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Police state much?
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's one in CT that I know of that we love to go to. It's called the Mansfield Drive-In.
