- cle2105, on 12/04/2008, -0/+13Ganz did the impossible in making Hitler seem human. I almost felt bad for the guy until I remembered that he tried to kill every Jew in Europe.
- bmson, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin should be there.
- GoGoPoCoSo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6dugg for the Goonies reference at the end.
- skyfox2k, on 12/04/2008, -2/+8I loved John McCain as George Bush best. Astonishing impersonation.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5I still feel bad for him. I'm the only guy that doesn't blame Hitler for the Holocaust. I blame his advisers who were mentally competent and NOT insane who let a crazy person into power and encouraged him to execute his insane orders. Goebbels, Himler, Goring, and Bormann were the people who COULD have stopped him, but didn't because they felt he served their purpose.
Hitler wasn't evil, he was just crazy, his advisers were the ones who knew better and as the saying goes, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing".
But, like I said, I'm the only one who feels this way and I'm probably going to get buried into oblivion. - ohnoerino, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Whoa, what's up with the Brolin's?
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I'm generally a huge fan of Robert Carlyle, but I did not like his performance in "Hitler" one bit. Mainly because it felt like he was just portraying the character one-dimensionally. I remember actually reading an interview with him where he flat-out admitted that he saw Hitler as a monster and had no intention of portraying him as anything more or less than that, and that he'll leave it up to other actors to give the character "emotional depth".
While I respect his point of view on the matter, I don't think it's an actor's place to judge the character he is playing - however reprehensible that character may be.
Personally I'm quite fond of Noah Taylor's portrayal in Max ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290210/ ), as it's a part of Hitler's life that's rarely explored (Hitler as a young man). Taylor manages to give the character motivation and pathos, but doesn't sacrifice the inherent hatefulness and spite of the character.
My all-time favourite is absolutely Bruno Ganz in Downfall. I can watch that film a hundred times in a row and still get chills from the absolutely terrible and terrifying - but yet all too human - man I see on screen. Truly one of my favourite performances ever. The fact that Ganz doesn't have an Oscar on his desk to keep his papers in place is just yet another example of the complete vacuum of credibility that is the Academy Awards. - corvine, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I love Tony Blair.
- zadadka, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Echoing (and having Dugg) cle2105's comment above, Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler was utterly riveting, mesmerising even, and he's the clear winner in this particular selection (without detracting in any way from the other individuals' performances).
I would go far as to say that the depth, range and command that Ganz lent to the role, reminded me of the late, great, Richard Burton. - BurningSky, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Will Smith's Barack Obama is my favorite...
- captainbethany, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Yeah, Gandhi... not really a politial world leader...
- captainsky, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Wow, this brings back some memories. Greenwood as Kennedy just works. Haven't seen Micheal Sheen as Tony Blair, yet, but that looks interesting.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3How was Gandhi not a political world leader? He wasn't an official of state, but he never the less was fiercely political and nobody can deny that he was a leader.
Also, I think Yigal Naor in "House of Saddam" was insanely good as Saddam Hussein, much better than the guy on the list. But, I guess it was only on TV, and this list is for "the silver screen" so it doesn't count. Still though, everyone should check out his performance. - Boagrius, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Robert Carlyle, you know, Daffy in The Beach and 28 weeks later, does a GREAT Hitler in "Hitler: Rise of Evil!"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0346293/ - Infowarsdotcom, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2This list should have been comprised entirely of Ganz.
I guess I prefer historical accuracy over hollywood makeup. - Chainheart2, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Worthless user is worthless (citation: rest of his comments)
- mlbwebdesign, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Actually, I couldn't stop laughing at the 'Save America's Wolves' advertisement on the right panel of this site. I thought it was part of a joke, until I clicked on it. How about Digg add a 'Save the Middle Class' advertisement and send us all some money.
- petebot, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2How about James Brolin’s spot-on portrayal of Pee-Wee Herman in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure?
- dagnabbit, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Thirteen Days is underrated. You know what happens but its still a good tense film.
- djangoxl, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I don't blame his advisors, but the men who would try to please Hitler, his followers, by doing crazy stuff. Like that crazy guy in the movie Der Untergang, whith his wife, who poisoned their own children...crazy crazy crazy man!
- junkneo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2BTW Saddam was never a leader, just a dictator (Hitler as well), I was told by Bush, who was more like Nixon (hardass).
- Lynxpro, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I prefer Gambon as a suspected werewolf in *The Beast Must Die*.
- kazoomaloo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1OK, I can't find any evidence that Jerry Haleva is dead (the article referred to him as "the late Haleva." IMDB doesn't know he's dead, nor does Wikipedia, nor does the rest of the Internets from my brief searchings.
- fishpicker, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Michael Gambon should have made the list for his portrayal of Lyndon Johnson in The Path to War.
- Lynxpro, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1
I can't remember the name of the actor but I'd pick the mail councilman from *The Matrix Reloaded* to play Obama if the actor wasn't so old [in comparison to Obama]. And no, I'm not referring to Anthony Zerbe (sic) either. - yahoofrom, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Ian McKellen for Ron Paul.
- chadell, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Nixon performed by Anthony Hopkins. BTW, who is playing Mandela?
- Rhymenoceros, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1it would be nice if had videos as well. just saying
- djangoxl, on 12/04/2008, -0/+14. Bruno Ganz....
Man, I watched this movie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and after it ended it left us speechless....
Der Untergang, and especially the performance of Bruno Ganz,.....chilling!!! - dbhavsar, on 12/04/2008, -3/+4what about Ben Kingsley in Gandhi?
- Lynxpro, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I too think *Max* is a great film despite John Cusack's (sic) lack of an Austrian/German accent. He must hail from a relatively unknown Germanic Tribe sporting a perfect Standard American English accent and I think Tom Cruise belongs to it too after seeing the trailer to his upcoming flick*.
*Not that Cruise has any chance of upstaging Ben Cross who already covered such character territory in the fictional *A Twist of Fate* nearly 2 decades ago. - Lynxpro, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1...but HBO isn't tv if you believe their ads...
- Lynxpro, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1How dare you demean the memory of fallen Battle of Yavin hero Biggs Darklighter like that.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1If that happens it will be the end of movies.
Will Smith needs someone to pull him to the side and go, "Yeah, um, you're not good at acting... People give you credit for the director's accomplishment in getting a decent performance out of you, but you still suck at this."
If anybody could do it, I'd think Don Cheadle could. He's fantastic. - toxicpiano, on 12/04/2008, -0/+0Shame noone in the UK does. Sheen is brilliant at him though, and Frost by the looks of it.
- keving727, on 12/04/2008, -0/+0I'll take Tony Little over James Brolin as Reagan any day of the week!
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -3/+2I'm sure if I said I saw McCain in Tales from the Krypt I'd get dugg up, because agism ROCKS!! But insulting the Messiah (praise be upon him) is an abomination before the eyes of... well, the Messiah!
- lovestospooge, on 12/04/2008, -5/+2That server fails more than the Bush administration.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -17/+1I think I saw Obama in Roots LOL

What is Digg?
