- sockpuppets, on 04/14/2008, -10/+53D is the only thing that will save the dying theater industry, imho. This move it a little late but I look forward to seeing them. I can't stand going to a theater to
a) drive
b) find a parking spot
c) pay $10 for a movie ticket
d) pay $20 for popcorn/soda
e) have some douche with a cellphone/baby/irritating girlfriend ruin the movie for me.- bizkit00, on 04/14/2008, -4/+4"Box office figures have shown that the enveloping feel of 3-D can attract two to three times more moviegoers who are willing to pay as much as $3 more per ticket, analysts said."
look forward to more cellphone douches, and $13 tickets.- qwertydvorak, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3even better if they move it all to imax 3d.
- Chupacabra82, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8don't buy the 20 dollar popcorn/soda...just a tip
- goldfishey, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3a) catch a bus/train
b) forget looking for a parking spot
c) pay $10 for movie ticket (unless your cinema has tight ass Tuesday?)
d) smuggle in your own lollies, in a bag.
e) toss said lollies at irritating girlfriend / douche at irregular intervals. (makes a ruined film much more enjoyable :) trust me!) - brodieface, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1Whoa, a trip to the cinema for you is well 'spensive. I'm glad I'm not stupid and pay for cinema food.

- Shadic, on 04/14/2008, -8/+5..I wonder if Disney realizes that the 3D gimmick will lose whatever effect it had when it's all that you're seeing?
- Elranzer, on 04/14/2008, -1/+6Right around when they realize their non-Pixar CGI movies are crap.
- bxblox, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2Color movies never lost the effect they have...
- Shadic, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1There's a HUGE difference between something simply looking better, and needing special glasses just so things can "pop out at you."
- AzureRise, on 04/14/2008, -2/+36Not a Disney fan, so I don't really care. However, 2D isn't antiquated. 3D may be newer technology but it's not superior, it's a different style. 2D games are still fun and other forms of 2D entertainment like anime still rake in the viewers.
- Diderotten, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1One of the worst things to ever happen is when Peter Chung started shelling out 3-d movies, rather than his 2-d stuff. The worst part is that he said he likes 3-d much better. Someone needs to tell him his new stuff sucks.
- unclesam5, on 04/14/2008, -1/+19Well, what about those of us with one eye and a pegleg, you ever think of THAT, Disney?
No, I didn't think so!- Wilsomatic, on 04/14/2008, -3/+23Yeah, it was called Pirates of The Caribbean. Went very well.
- paradigm1220, on 04/14/2008, -1/+6Zing!

http://digg.com/music/San_Fransisco_s_Starski_Drun ... - H0tKarl, on 04/14/2008, -4/+5I wonder if they'll just have like 6 minutes of actual 3d footage like Superman Returns.
- Jovensdesciple, on 04/14/2008, -10/+5Disney movies should move out of existence.
- amoirae, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1So should you.
- Jovensdesciple, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I did years ago.
- amoirae, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1So should you.
- aps234, on 04/14/2008, -3/+4As much as I like the 3D experience, it can give me a headache at times. I hope the 10,000 3D screen expansion mentioned doesn't pave the way for all screens to be 3D; the theaters would reek of vomit.
- djphatjive, on 04/14/2008, -2/+7I went and saw The Robinsons in 3D and it was the coolest thing I have ever seen. I can't wait for Star Wars in 3D. Lucas is bringing them all out in 3D soon.
- niceyuk, on 04/14/2008, -3/+3oh no, not ANOTHER version of Star Wars
- colincornaby, on 04/14/2008, -4/+6"Finally"? Because god knows that this was something I was missing from my movie experience...
- Jareth86, on 04/14/2008, -6/+2Movie totally to CGI was a stupid move, and now this? 3D movies cause nausea in so many people, they are going to loose a huge chunk of the movie going public.
- MyExSucks, on 04/14/2008, -1/+9That part in Toy Story where Buzz shows all the toys he can fly would be sick in 3D when he's spinning around on that airplane model hanging off the ceiling.
- Diderotten, on 04/14/2008, -6/+3I liked very few disney movies before toy story. Pixar's Disney's crutch. Without them, they would fail hard.
- BananaAmbush, on 04/14/2008, -2/+34How about some more traditionally animated films with good writing?
That's too radical and different, I know. - ANT1138, on 04/14/2008, -2/+3Very cool. I wonder how this will translate to home theater. Hopefully 3D video games are on their way soon too.
- InitialDMP5, on 04/14/2008, -2/+3The point is that it won't translate to home theaters, and will get people to go to the movie theater again.
- zephyear, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2well 3D TVs are currently in prototype stage, and if movies start being sold in 3d, chances are the 3d hdtvs will hit the consumer market
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thum ...- coresnake, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Actually theres already one out in japan, you have to wear shades to watch it :-) Japanese broadcasting is going to put out the double frequency 3d stuff too... they get everything good first!
- zephyear, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2well 3D TVs are currently in prototype stage, and if movies start being sold in 3d, chances are the 3d hdtvs will hit the consumer market
- jabelar, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0Well, the key is that computer rendering of these movies can render into either format. So they don't have to remake the movie to produce it in both 3D and 2D. And the computer-generated 3D can be "perfect" and so does not suffer from the problems of older manual attempts at 3D.
- InitialDMP5, on 04/14/2008, -2/+3The point is that it won't translate to home theaters, and will get people to go to the movie theater again.
- floorpi, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1This is sorta interesting but it would have been nice if they mentioned something about the technology used and what is needed to view the movie.
- InitialDMP5, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2stereoscopic cameras for new movies, and rotoscoping and creating new layers for depth in older movies. This process was done on the Nightmare Before Christmas 3D and is currently being done on at least one movie trilogy, Star Wars (4, 5 and 6). The audience will wear polarized glasses (like those that are worn in movies like Beowulf and any of the IMAX 3D movies. The effect is less of a "3D" look and more about creating a sense of depth and being there in that scene. Sure some movies will want that "In your face" feel, but more serious movies will use the effect to put you in that courtroom drama, or in the car being chased by police.
- Franswahili, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2Well, they'll have the goofy stoner market cornered.
- gmprunner, on 04/14/2008, -1/+5Would these still require the fashionable glasses?
- ANT1138, on 04/14/2008, -2/+4I hope they remake Fantasia in 3D.
- baldycraig, on 04/14/2008, -1/+7It doesn't use the old technique that gives people headaches.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Digital_3-D- jabelar, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0Yeah, this is computer-generated 3D effects which can be "perfect" rather than manual guesswork that was involved in the 3D movies people remember from 60s and 70s.
- gmoney1, on 04/14/2008, -2/+6I want drawn movies back. 3d takes disney away from what made them famous. But I don't think 3d can save them. Only Pixar can.
- cbodall, on 04/14/2008, -4/+10What??? These comments are insane! Doesn't anyone miss the way Disney movies used to be........ animated. Everything from Disney movies to Chester Cheeto have moved to CG. And now to 3D? Why? Where's the nostalgia in that? Pixar was Disney's downfall. Doesn't anyone miss good animated Disney movies like The Lion King?
- GregLoire, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I also prefer the old hand-drawn style. But, like any other company, Disney is simply responding to the market forces. If more people preferred the old style to the new one (enough to actually buy tickets), then this shift would not exist.
- bawpcwpn, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5Pixar is the downfall? It's Pixar's John Lasseter that is bringing back 2D animated features like The Princess & The Frog back to Disney. It's 3-D, like taking a live-action movie and making it in 3-D, stereoscopic 3-D, not animation 3D.
- jabelar, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0I am not ashamed to admit I rewatched Bambi recently (hey, I've got a 3-year old daughter so I'm allowed). Anyway, it was really amazing animation. The backgrounds and forest were great and the whole thing is experiential (it is mostly about a baby deer exploring the forest anyway).
With that being said, such animation was novel at the time. Now people want something else novel, and it happens to be 3D.
- Sulzer, on 04/14/2008, -2/+43-D is cool every now and then (i.e. Monster House), but it's still too much of a gimmick for me to take it seriously (i.e. Spy Kids 3-D; not that I saw it... I swear). Not to mention they make you pay for the ***** glasses on top of the already outrageous ticket price. Filmmakers still rely too heavily on the 3-D cliche of "whoaaa, it felt like that [generic long pointy object] was gonna poke me in the eye!" Wait a second... 3-D porn... hmmm
- bonjourmr, on 04/25/2008, -4/+3Maybe 3D hentai soon then?
- amoirae, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Tentacle rape in 3D? EW.
- YodaJones, on 04/14/2008, -3/+4I'll be damned if I'm going to wear special glasses to watch a movie.
- Nydendarin, on 04/14/2008, -2/+2Bad move, in my opinion. Stereoscopic technology has come a long way, but it's still gimmicky. I for one really dislike the idea of having to put on a pair of glasses that compromises the quality, color, and overall enjoyment of the movie I paid $11+ for every time I go see a Pixar flick. Sounds like a cheap ploy to sell more tickets, more than anything.
I can't wait till a better solution surfaces. Hey, maybe Johnny Lee can point us in the right direction.- InitialDMP5, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1well, since I wear glasses all the time, its not a big deal to put on the glasses, since that is how I already view the world. And if a movie was specifically designed for a 3D viewing experience, how can it be compromised? And its not just Disney who is committed to 3D movies. James Cameron and quite a few other production studios have said they are going to go exclusively 3D with their future movie projects.
- MasterGracey, on 04/14/2008, -1/+10Clearly many of you have not experienced Disney Digital 3D.
The 3D presentation isn't gimmicky -- it is used appropriately to add more depth to the film -- it is really quite amazing. It looks and feels completely natural, and I forgot that I was even wearing the 3D glasses. There are no side effects like nausea or headaches. And the 3D feature does not mean that there will be gimmicky parts where a character throws something at you, or something comes flying by your head. This isn't theme park 3D -- this 3D makes the movie-going experience complete -- it makes the film you're watching feel more real than ever and is a surprisingly enjoyable experience.- Sinai, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3I think you vastly underestimate how easily people get nauseous. A significant chunk of the population gets nauseous watching 2D simulation of movement.
- keozen, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Just out of interest, which division of Disney Marketing do you work for?
- joshtj, on 04/14/2008, -3/+1I've never got a 3d movie to 'work', they're as bad as those damn magic eye books. Curse you Disney!
- eclectro, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1That's because you need special glasses. oh.. wait..
- wolfboyZ, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1Toy Story 3 with Andy in college? The fanbase of Toy Story are probably in college now. Coincidence?
- mirot, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1dude.. i dont wanna wear 3d glasses at a movie theater
- Ica7us, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0When Disney acquired pixar I was scared. Then I learned that that the pixar animators replaced the high disney animators so I felt there was promise...
apparently I was wrong and the last Pixar movie worth seeing is The Incredibles. - riskybeats, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1I for one like wearing stupid ass ***** on my face while I watch movies. Plus I have all the 3D glasses in the world. Mwaahahahahahaha! And you all laughed at me and called me crazy!
- WikiEasy, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Screw Disney. Where's 3D porn?
- Slython, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Just check your local bar, I'm sure the drunk whores are more then happy to oblige.
- brodieface, on 04/14/2008, -0/+01D is where it's at.
- CrimsonBlur, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2What's with the negative comments about 3D? Sure in the past it's been lame, but the technology has come such a long way, it's not even worth mentioning the past problems with the format.
Think about how awesome Aladdin would have been in 3D: when you first meet the genie, the huge parade and the magic carpet ride? The swinging through the city? It would have been spectacular. Or how about The Lion King during the stampede? The image of Simba's father in the clouds forming from all around you? What would be the downside? It's not like the art suffers just because it's projected in 3D, it looks and feels even better.
I don't care what any of you naysayers think, when I saw Beowulf in IMAX 3D I was absolutely blown away, it exceeded my expectations and all of my doubts about the format were erased. I would bet anyone complaining about the 3D experience have not actually seen any of the recent 3D movies using the polarized glasses, because most of what's being said is nonsense.
Perhaps not all movies should be presented in 3D, but I can't think of a single reason Disney shouldn't move all of their animation over to 3D, it really is amazing. I wish I was a kid right now, growing up with 3D movies. - sfacets, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2CNN, late as usual.
- dudefaceguyman, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Meh sorta saddens me they're slowly moving away from hand drawn movies..Personally I think they have more of a charm then 95% of stiff generic CG crap today. At least they are still keeping a bunch of artists around and hopefully will release more then just ONE hand drawn film in the next few years..
- Sinai, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Sounds like an overall bad move to me. It can't help but increase production costs compared to computer animated 2D, which is how most animation is made these days. And it's not that people don't want to see Disney films in 2D, it's mostly that the quality of the films themselves have degenerated from the Disney animation's rebirth in the 90s.
It's going to be a sorry day when the only 2D studios left are Korean, even the Japanese are outsourcing to them these days. - doshindude, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1is this that ***** 3D with the red and blue glasses? what's this huge hype about it?
- etx313, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Is this like Shrek 3D at universal studios? Cause that looked and worked pretty well.
- CPUGUy, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1This is the same 3d tech that was used to do the U2 3D movie and the 3D Hanna Montana movie.
I saw the end of the Hanna Montana as I waited for U2 3D (admittedly it was so cool that I like the Hanna Montana part as well). The U2 concert in 3D up on the big screen, in HD at that, was just freaking awesome. It was better than being at the actual concert, except there was no one at the theater to build up the same energy as you get going to the concert (though you did get some from the crowd that was at the concert).
This basically put you right there up front at the concert, gave so much depth to it all. Absolutely amazing.
At the end they advertised a full 3D Brandon Frasier movie that will be coming out, first full 3d live action feature-length move.
Definitely do not knock this technology before you try it. It is not for the in your face stuff that is meant to freak you out just about depth and actually putting you in the movie. Pretty awesome. - nickynick8807, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I miss the old 2-D animated movies. I think that if this is true, the movie would be more focused on the 3-D, and less on the actual plot line of the story, which is unfortunate.
- HappyScrappy, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2Er, "Knick-Knack". Not "Nickname".
And I saw it in 3D at Siggraph '89 in Boston.
3D is a gimmick, and isn't really even 3D. By that I mean, by moving your head, you don't expose anything you didn't see before. - icedm, on 04/14/2008, -1/+0OK well check out the Samsung 3-d ready LED DLP's
then tell me I don't know if this will last...
then check out the technology compared to some samsung LCD
you'll notice that the refresh rate on a DLP 3-d ready TV is 120Hz
3-D ready means it can spit the picture up and you can buy some samsung 3-d glasses that sync in 120Hz
so now that all the LCD's or moving to 120Hz, eventually every TV has 3-D
Last Check out that that tech guy that made a white board with a wii-mote and find the 3-d interaction he made with safety goggles.... EA has already set up an Easter egg too utilize the wii-mote to do this in its next shooter for the wii...
Finally you and why? Well buy that DLP 1080p LED (3-d ready set) find a wii and wait for the glasses from samsung later this year... because in at least one year or two.. you will be shooting up with you wii-zapper in 3-d not to mention when you squat down behind a box you screen fallows your head movement.... ha ha ha
kick but gaming not bad, Cheers to Disney make the world fallow the leader
