- garionw, on 01/17/2008, -4/+138its people like him that make me want to go out and buy the DVD itself. I might not watch it, but what goes around comes around
- rtaibah, on 05/22/2009, -1/+123At the end of the day a director is an artist and whats his/her work to be seen and shared...The whole movie industry used to revolve around this. Sadly it has been long forgotten.
- rmd34, on 01/17/2008, -1/+36Similar to the film 'The Man from Earth'. The producer (Eric D. Wilkinson) publicly thanked bitTorrent users because of the impact p2p had on the film, he says... "What you guys have done here is nothing short of amazing. In the future, I will not complain about file sharing. YOU HAVE HELPED PUT THIS LITTLE MOVIE ON THE MAP!!!! When I make my next picture, I just may upload the movie on the net myself!"

http://www.rlslog.net/piracy-isnt-that-bad-and-the ... - inactive, on 01/17/2008, -4/+33He won't think less of us? Great, that's a load off my conscience.
- tenken, on 01/17/2008, -1/+24I'm sure many directors feel this way, or at least those of the indie variety. Michael Moore has said the same thing about his past few documentaries as well. The problem is that directors usually have very little control over their films. In addition, all of the legal BS comes from the studios, despite the director's intentions...
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 01/17/2008, -0/+18not necessarily. this is your assumption.
- thesparrowband, on 01/17/2008, -0/+16see, now i saw this on diggs front page and i've never heard of the movie, so i go and watch the trailer and it looks good, so i'll probably go see it. nice guys dont always finish last. thanks john
- Rettocs, on 01/17/2008, -0/+10If you don't want to pay the excessive price for theatre food, then don't buy it. I never do, because I know first hand that it is a rip-off. The people in the theatre is something I can understand, but if you see it on opening night, there are a few less annoying people in the crowd, albiet not that many less.
They do, actually, make money on rentals. The places that have the movies to rent have to pay an overhead of around 75% just to get the movies to rent. Also, the different channels pay for the movies, they aren't shown for free. - capiCrimm, on 01/17/2008, -1/+9I wish producers like this would mass download their own movies. That way there is a chance of the ultimate irony. A musician/producer/director/actor/etc being sued for downloading their own work.
Delicious. - littlemarcho, on 01/17/2008, -1/+9"The whole movie industry used to revolve around this" - NEVER!
Besides, if you made movies that people didn't pay to watch, they would be crap because there wouldn't be much money put into making it. - RobotBuddha, on 01/17/2008, -0/+8I can't decide if you haven't known enough artists, or if you've known too many.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -5/+12 I do not go to movie theaters, I have gone one time about every 3-4 years... The cost of popcorn, hotdog, soda, licorice is excessive, sure I can sneak food in, but the food at the theater always tastes better to me. Then you have to deal with people in the theater, and children and sticky floors..... Drive-ins were great, but virtually non existant.
If you rent the video, they make no money, if you watch it on cable they make no money.. At least with download exposure you can be introduced to actors, directors and some how in the long run in one way or another I believe profit will come to them... If he is a good director, I will watch for his other films, if the film is really good, I'll buy the DVD.
Movie studios churn out way to much crap which I think is one major problem. - tacroy, on 01/17/2008, -4/+11Of course he does, he gains from the wider release, and he gets paid the same either way. However, the people that actually paid for the movie to get made (and paid his salary) get screwed. The director is an employee of the studio, its not much different than the cook at a restaurant saying "I would rather you not pay for the food, so I can get exposure".
I very much doubt he would say the same if HE financed the movie and it was HIS money he was loosing. But hey, if it helps him and screws someone else, he's all for it. - xtc46, on 01/17/2008, -1/+7This is exactly how I am. I love going to the movies, but I just don't have the time to see all the ones I want in a theater. I can download a copy of a movie I think looks good, play it on my iPod while at the gym, and then there is about a 75 percent chance that if I enjoyed the movie, Ill end up buying it. I have lots of movies that aren't even open, but I bought them to support the actors/directors/writers etc. TV shows are the same way. There is no difference between me DVRing the thing or downloading it since the station doesnt get ad revenue from DVR so I do whats more convenient.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -0/+6Definitely a great movie. I would have never watched or heard of such a movie if it wasn't uploaded on mininova.
- Sil369, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5movie industires in the end are like banks. they loan out money and material to whatever companies on the assumption they will get a bigger return in the end. i dont think they give a crap about this sweet talk ".... directors....artists....beauty....blah"
They're a large scale mafiaa really - Jware, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5"critically acclaimed"?
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_nines/ - RobotBuddha, on 01/17/2008, -1/+6You were dug down for that? Come on, it didn't even get a release in many of the states within the US. Critically acclaimed, sure. But calling something a hit usually at least implies that you won't have to hop a plane to find a theater showing it.
- smacksaw, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5Not really. A society run by fear is inferior to one fostered by trust.
- offput, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5There are not enough adjectives to describe how right this guy is. Hollywood began as a money-making adventure. There were directors who were artists but that doesn't mean the money wasn't in the hands of the rich producers back then. Hell it was even worse in those days when you were contractually bound to do movies for a certain studio even if you didn't like the script they gave you.
- stubear, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5Michael Moore is more than welcome to finance his own films and give them away for free. The Studios foot the bill and by doing to they get to set the rules. Don't like them? Don't sign with a studio for distribution. This is as true with music as it is with film.
- latrosicarius, on 01/17/2008, -2/+6I have bought many DVDs and never played them... If I like a movie or tv show show that I download, I will buy it a lot of times.
- grakker, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4This has been shown with music downloaders. Those who download also, on average, buy more music. By targeting these people, the RIAA shot themselves in the foot and so, in a few years, they will be irrelevant, if they aren't already. The same will happen with the MIAA, or whatever the ***** the acronym is.
- xstarsprinklesx, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4That's all well and good, but since he's not really the one who "made the movie" (given that filmmaking is a collaborative effort) he can't really speak for the other people whose livelihoods depend on the studio being reimbursed for its backing of the production.
- garf83, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4Having seen it, I can say this is a really cool, albeit, strange movie - but that's what makes it so great. Absolutely worth seeing.
- Asberry, on 01/17/2008, -8/+11"Hit 2007 movie?" Not really...
- misterhat, on 01/17/2008, -2/+5you are a marketers drean
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -6/+9Director of THE HIT movie? The mvie gorssed $64,000. That is THOUSAND, not million. Yes, it was a small release, but still...calling this movie a hit is just a desperate attempt to try to make it look like the directior of some big time movie is all for it. *****.
- zeeeg, on 01/17/2008, -2/+5I think less of the director after downloading and watching this movie. craaaaaaaap
- kedohmen, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3"The director of the hit 2007 movie ‘The Nines’..."
marked as inaccurate. - Travelsonic, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2I'm not saying you never said, I'm saying to apy an open ended definition when it is obvious the gradeschool level will not work since we are in the digital age, where in fac the physical realm opens a whole new level of exceptions and conflicts.
- Travelsonic, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2It is quite ironic how people who make your arguments accuse those who call you out for playing with words of doing the same thing.
I am not saying YOU, I am using the royal you, as a lot of people do this.
In the most simplistic, logical form, your definition of stealing is still way too ambiguous to make sense, which I am happy that the law requires certain circumstances for it to be so. - goodgame, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3LOTR, HP are both books and the Spiderman movies are based off comics.
I agree, less books/comics to movies please. - paarshad, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3I saw it at a showing in LA a few months ago and thought it was really good, lots of twists that come together nicely at the end.
- marrstu, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Yes but will you?
- RonniSR, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2There is an old saying in the world of pirates.
Warez is meant to be free, but if you like it buy it!!! - kmotiv1, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2cool, I already downloaded it last week.
- crowbar77, on 01/17/2008, -2/+4Well of course he will tell people to go ahead and pirate it, he's already received his pay check.
- RobotBuddha, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Small art theaters. Even most mid-sized towns usually have them hidden away somewhere, you can drink in most of them, no crowds to deal with, cheaper, and the quality of the movies is usually fairly high compared to the local summer blockbuster theaters.
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2see: King Kong.
Jack Black takes his script on the road because he doesn't like what the producers have in store for him and his project. - scarper86, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2The movie industry has always been a business. You could exchange some of the quotes that movie executives made back in the 20's for stuff they say today and you wouldn't know the difference.
Even in the "golden age" there were lots of ***** movies. Just go to archive.org and download some of those old movies that have fallen out of copyright. Ugh. Some of them make today's crap seem like Shakespeare. - xtc46, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2movie rental places pay around $100 bucks per copy of movie to rent (atleast it was when I worked for a rental place) I usually buy a soda at the theater (3.25 for a medium with free refills, which means they profit about $3.00 hehe) but rarely buy food, unless im in the mood for snowcaps, since they are the best movie candy ever. Part of the movie experience is the crowd, especially for huge movies like the matrix was or Starwars. Going opening night is one of the best movie going experiences becasue there are no annoying people in the theater at midnight durring the release only the real fans.
- TheGuruStud, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1MAFIAA :)
- xtc46, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2he meant Michael Moores Docudrama's which are based on a true story.
- Travelsonic, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I know by saying that you can't be taken seriously.
It is literally stealing? How? of what? by what mans, under which law?
It isn't, at most the illegality is COPYRIGHT law.
...big ***** difference here. - b8man99, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1If I could download it, watch it, and donate something afterwards if I enjoyed it, then I would.
- prgmctan, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2That may have been an intelligent comment, but you lost me in all of your backwards wording.
- Asberry, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2Thanks for backing me up on this!
- RobotBuddha, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1It's especially bad for limited release movies. For whatever reason, the dvd release tends to not get as much buzz as the theatrical, and by then I've often forgotten that the movie seemed worth watching. It really doesn't seem like smaller movies have anything to lose by going into digital distribution methods.
- Mikey9oo, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1it is too bad, there is nothing like watching a film on the big screen.
